ci: run clippy for Windows and macOS too, and fix what it finds - #46696
The clippy job only linted the Linux build, so code under cfg(windows) or cfg(target_os = "macos") was never held to the workspace lints. It had 614 violations on Windows (177 of them unsafe blocks with no SAFETY comment) and 1 on macOS. This lints all three and fixes them.
CI.bun run rust:clippy now runs scripts/rust-clippy.ts: Linux, Windows and macOS in one cargo clippy run on the Linux runner (clippy never links), then the standalone bun_shim_impl binary, which --workspace skips. The step takes 2 min 15 s in CI. The check name is unchanged. mordant shares the target list.
Not mechanical, worth a look:
Pipe/Tty/Timer/uv_idle_t::init, Process::spawn, uv_write_t::write, CreateHardLinkW and set_windows_metadata are now unsafe fn.
New bun_sys::stat_size: st_size is u64 on Windows and signed on POSIX.
Large path buffers moved off the stack (tree::Iterator, PackageInstaller, Scanner, MacroEntryPoint, three thread-locals). 23 of 28 large_stack_frames hits are fixed. The other 5 have an #[expect] with a reason.
libuv's debug log uses scoped_log!, and open_handles uses hashbrown with wyhash.
which keeps its live std::env::var_os read, with an #[expect]: env_var caches, and process.env can set this opt-out at runtime. New Windows test for that.
Removed the unused GetEnvironmentVariableW wrapper.
clippy --fix handled about half. I reverted its hunks that compiled but were wrong elsewhere, because it sees code after cfg stripping.
Also carries the one-file test fix of #46170, unchanged: ws-proxy.test.ts was failing on Windows 2019 x64 on many branches.
bun run rust:clippy exits 0. It exits 101 with a planted Windows-only violation, and with one only the standalone shim sees.
cargo check --workspace --all-targets, cargo fmt --check and the source lints pass.
Linux debug build: install, pm ls, bun.lock, file sizes, serve, spawn, router, glob, macros, exports, createRequire and DNS give the same output as 1.4.4.
Windows and macOS: checked by CI only. BuildKite build 131778 is green on every platform, and the new spawn test passes on Windows 2019 x64 and Windows 11 aarch64.
Not exercised: to_js_buffer_from_memfd, which no JS path reaches today.
The clippy job only linted the Linux build, so code under `cfg(windows)` or
`cfg(target_os = "macos")` was never held to the workspace lints. It had 614
violations on Windows and 1 on macOS.
`bun run rust:clippy` now goes through `scripts/rust-clippy.ts`, which lints
x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and aarch64-apple-darwin in
one run. Clippy never links, so the Linux runner can lint all three.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the rewritten length guards in src/paths/resolve_path.rs (a + b - 1 >= n to a + b > n is the same bound and no longer underflows on an empty path), the new bun_sys::stat_size clamp (negative POSIX st_size reads as 0; callers only use it as a byte count), and the libuv [uv] log moving to scoped_log! (still gated on env::IS_DEBUG plus the BUN_DEBUG_uv scope, so release builds dead-strip it as before). None of those change behavior.
Extended reasoning...
120-file clippy cleanup across the Windows and macOS cfg-gated Rust surface: SAFETY comments, &raw mut rewrites, several libuv wrappers promoted to unsafe fn, large path buffers moved to the heap, a new stat_size helper, and a new multi-target clippy CI script. No auth, crypto or injection surface is touched, but the which env-var caching finding and the fact that the author did not run the Windows or macOS builds mean a human should still look at the non-mechanical hunks.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.
The PR adds a shared Clippy script that checks Linux, Windows, and macOS targets. It also updates Rust FFI calls and unsafe contracts, buffer allocation, file-size handling, and Windows runtime behavior.
The rust:clippy command now uses a script and shared Linux, Windows, and macOS target list. The workflow invokes the script, and Mordant uses the same target list. Contributor guidance describes the lint coverage and target-specific Clippy expectations.
Rust FFI contracts and Windows pointer handling src/bun_core/*, src/crash_handler/*, src/io/*, src/libuv_sys/*, src/runtime/*, src/spawn*/*, src/sys/*, src/watcher/*, src/uws_sys/*, src/install/windows-shim/*
Windows FFI calls now use explicit raw pointers in many out-parameter and libuv call sites. Several libuv methods and Windows APIs are now marked unsafe with documented caller requirements. Clippy expectations and safety comments were added in affected code.
Several path and context buffers now use boxed zero-initialized allocations. The new stat_size helper is used by file-size consumers. The router hash now streams URL components into Wyhash, and the Node path join uses a heap buffer sized to the requested output.
Windows runtime behavior and validation src/which/lib.rs, src/runtime/cli/test_command.rs, src/runtime/socket/*, test/js/bun/spawn/*, test/js/web/websocket/*
Executable lookup now checks the current OS environment for NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath. The Windows spawn test checks behavior when the variable changes at runtime. The WebSocket renegotiation test starts renegotiation from the write callback. Other Windows code updates retain their described error handling and control flow.

The title "ci: run clippy for Windows and macOS too, and fix what it finds" matches the main change. The PR extends Clippy linting from Linux to Linux, Windows, and macOS through scripts/rust-clippy.ts and the rust:clippy script, and fixes the violations it reports. The title is concise and specific. It does not mention the many API and unsafe-fn changes, which is expected.

Explanation
The description follows the required template with both sections present: "What does this PR do?" and "How did you verify your code works?". The first section explains the problem (Clippy only linted Linux, leaving cfg(windows) and macOS code unchecked, with 614 Windows and 1 macOS violations), the CI change (scripts/rust-clippy.ts running all three targets plus the standalone bun_shim_impl binary), the notable API changes to unsafe fn, the new bun_sys::stat_size helper, and the removed GetEnvironmentVariableW wrapper. The second section lists concrete verification: bun run rust:clippy exit codes with planted violations, cargo check, cargo fmt, Linux debug behavior comparisons, and the Buildkite build status for Windows and macOS. The description also notes the one-file test fix from #46170 and the supersession of #37605. Minor gaps: the Windows and macOS results rely on CI only, and the memfd path was not exercised. The author states this openly, so the description is complete enough to pass.

`which_for_spawn` read `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` through
`env_var`, which caches its first read, so setting it in `process.env`
after the first spawn had no effect on Windows. It reads the live
environment again, as before this branch, and a Windows test covers it.
- `open_handles` uses hashbrown with wyhash. `bun_collections::HashMap`
never clears tombstones, so lookups slow down as handles open and close.
- `effective_url_hash` streams into the hasher and `joinWTF` uses a heap
buffer. Neither needs its `large_stack_frames` suppression now.
- `rust:clippy` also lints the standalone `bun_shim_impl` binary, which
`--workspace` skips because it is behind a feature.
- The `cargo check` step names the Linux target so it reuses clippy's
build of the third-party crates.
- Drop a duplicate debug line, a stale comment and a second size read.

The follow-up commit resolves both points from my earlier review, and this pass found no new bugs; because this is a 120-file change to Windows- and macOS-only code that the description says was only exercised on Linux, a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
The which_for_spawn fix: cwd_search_disabled reads NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath live via std::env::var_os (covered by clippy.toml's disallowed-methods entry, so the #[expect] is satisfied) and the new Windows spawn test exercises set/unset at runtime.
The open_handles switch to hashbrown + bun_wyhash::BuildHasher, and effective_url_hash streaming into Wyhash — the hash is only used for in-process route dedup, so the one-shot/streaming difference is not observable.
scripts/rust-clippy.ts now lints bun_shim_impl with shim_standalone for the Windows targets; CI passes all three targets, so the shim run always has a Windows triple.
array_buffer.rs now reads stat_size once before the mmap-threshold branch; the usize conversion is unchanged in effect.
Extended reasoning...
The PR adds Windows and macOS targets to the clippy job and fixes roughly 600 lint hits in cfg-gated code across 120 files, including several functions becoming unsafe fn, large path buffers moved to the heap, a new bun_sys::stat_size helper, and a hashbrown-backed handle registry in libuv_sys. It touches spawn executable resolution on Windows (binary-planting opt-out), which is security-relevant, and the follow-up commit restored live reads of that env var with a test. The bug hunt ran dry and both prior inline findings were addressed, but the sheer size, the unsafe-signature changes, and the author's statement that the Windows and macOS paths were not run locally mean a human should still sign off rather than an automated approve.

A host that already sets `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` would fail
the first step of the new Windows test. Also note in `rust-clippy.ts`
that only the run over every target lints the standalone shim.

Both points from my earlier passes are addressed in the code: which_for_spawn reads NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath live again via cwd_search_disabled() (src/which/lib.rs), and the cargo check step now shares clippy's --target build directory. This pass found no new bugs, but at 120 files with new unsafe fn boundaries and Windows/macOS paths exercised only by CI, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed: the new Windows spawn test (deletes the opt-out before the first run; delete process.env.X reaches editWindowsEnvVar(k, null) so the OS environment is cleared); bun_sys::stat_size (clamps negative POSIX st_size to 0, passes u64 through on Windows); the Box<PathBuffer> / boxed_zeroed() moves in tree::Iterator, PackageInstaller, Scanner and MacroEntryPoint (same zero-init semantics, no new unchecked indexing); the &mut to &raw mut rewrites in src/sys/lib.rs (pointer-only arguments to FFI, no borrow changes); and the rust-clippy.ts exit-code plumbing (workspace failure wins, shim status otherwise).
Extended reasoning...
The change extends the clippy CI job to lint Windows and macOS targets plus the standalone bun_shim_impl binary, and fixes the ~615 lints that surfaced: SAFETY comments on existing unsafe blocks, several FFI wrappers marked unsafe fn, large path buffers boxed off the stack, a new stat_size helper, and clippy-driven rewrites across 120 Rust files. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the only behavior-adjacent spot is the Windows spawn cwd-lookup opt-out, which the latest commits restored to a live environment read with a new test. Both earlier inline findings were addressed by follow-up commits, and the bug hunt ran to a dry streak with no findings. The size of the diff, the new unsafe fn contracts that shift obligations to callers, and the fact that the Windows and macOS code was verified only by CI are what keep this at defer rather than approve.
…ritten
Same change as #46170. On Windows 2019 x64 the test "a message sent
during a TLS renegotiation arrives after it" fails on many branches: the
node origin queues the frame behind the 101 that is still being written,
and `renegotiate()` sends its HelloRequest first. The origin now starts
the renegotiation from the frame's write callback.
CI: buildkite/bun build 131740 failed on one test that is not from this PR. I ported the existing fix.
Failing:test/js/first_party/ws/ws-proxy.test.ts, "a message sent during a TLS renegotiation arrives after it", on Windows 2019 x64, all 4 attempts. Records arrive as [22, 23] instead of [23, 22] and the client closes with 1006. Every other finished job in the build passed.
Why it is not this PR's: the same test fails the same way on the same lane in 13 other builds between 131650 and 131730, on 12 unrelated branches (CSS, macros, S3, shell, IPC). test(ws-proxy): renegotiate only after the "renegotiating" frame is written #46170 reports it from build 128251 on. It is a race in the test's node origin, not in Bun.
ws-proxy.test.ts (106), websocket-proxy.test.ts (125) and websocket-client.test.ts (104) pass with the new helper. Not run on Windows: the new build is the check for that.
The Windows test this PR adds passed in build 131740: spawn.test.ts is 127 pass, 0 fail on both Windows 2019 x64 and Windows 11 aarch64.

CI: buildkite/bun build 131778 went red at 09:05 UTC with no test failure.
What failed: the two darwin any x64 - test-bun jobs expired after 97 minutes in the queue. They never got an agent (started_at is empty), so no test ran on that lane.
Why it is not this PR's: the test-darwin x64 queue is behind for every branch. In builds 131700, 131710 and 131720 the same two jobs expired the same way, and their automatic retries started about 1 h 50 min after the build was scheduled.
Next: BuildKite has already queued the retries for this build, so nothing needs re-running by hand. There is nothing to fix in the PR for this.
