How this was reproduced, and where the rest of the work is. The crash. A peer opens with SETTINGS_INITIAL_WINDOW_SIZE = 0, sends 3,000 GET requests, and raises the window once the server has answered them all. Each response is The runaway. With the same blocked peer, a client that writes 8 KB from each write callback accepts 64 MB and grows RSS by 64 MB. Node stops at 2.57 MB. The nested pass kept serializing frames into a write buffer the socket had already refused. Both are in Origin. #44881 handed off the other half of this defect: a write still completes while its bytes wait in the session's buffer. That half needs a rule for what a write in flight gets at teardown, which is #44881's open question, so it is not in this PR. Its branch is |

WalkthroughThe HTTP/2 stream queue flush now prevents nested dispatch and stops before processing another stream when backpressure is present. New conformance tests cover finalization depth, callback-driven writes under socket backpressure, and 3,000 queued responses. ChangesHTTP/2 queued stream flushing

Remove the arbitrary sleep from this test.
Bun.sleep(2000) can return while callbacks are still pending. The < OFFERED assertion is only a snapshot and can pass before the chain continues. The test guidance requires waiting for a condition.
Do not fail solely because a callback runs after refusal. Queued callbacks for earlier writes can run later. Use a condition-driven outcome that accounts for those callbacks and fails if the chain reaches OFFERED. If no settled-state signal exists, limit this change to removing the prohibited timed wait; do not claim that a snapshot proves the chain stopped.

Remove the per-test timeout.
The 30_000 argument sets an explicit test timeout. Remove it and use the runner’s timeout policy. As per coding guidelines, “Do not set a timeout on tests. Bun already has timeouts.”

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the &mut Stream held across the write callback in Stream::flush_queue (h2_frame_parser.rs:1672) — the callback already ran there on main, so this change does not widen that window — and the test.skipIf(isDebug || isASAN) on the 3000-stream fixture, which the three 50-stream depth cases still cover on those lanes.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a re-entrancy flag and a backpressure early-return to flush_stream_queue in src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs plus four new node:http2 tests; it touches no auth or crypto surface. Inline findings cover the deferred END_STREAM on nested flush, the JS-backed transport gap, and test-quality issues, so a human look is already signalled by them; this note only records the two concerns examined and ruled out.

src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs— Sessions on a JS-backed transport (custom createConnection, duplexPair, h2-over-h2 tunnels) do not get the write-chain bound this PR advertises; the loop keeps serializing frames into a socket that already refused bytes. The nested flush() that a dequeue's end() runs sets has_nonnative_backpressure to false at h2_frame_parser.rs:2787 before the guard at :2724 returns 0, so the outer loop's check at :2745 sees no backpressure and dequeues the next stream. Each stream's end repeats this, so the whole queue is pushed into the JS Writable in one pass. Fix: the JS arm must not clear has_nonnative_backpressure when the queue is already being dispatched (or only clear it when a drain, not a nested flush, called it), so :2745 stops on both transport arms. [also at: src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs:2737 - Servers over a JS Duplex whose write() always returns true can still spin synchronously in flush_stream_queue when two streams each write from their write callbacks; the loop at h2_frame_parser.rs:2737 never yields.]Why this was flagged
On a JS-backed session (BunSocket::None at h2_frame_parser.rs:2785) the dispatch loop dequeues stream A's frame and calls its write callback at :1672; user JS ends the stream, http2.ts:2776/2790 calls native.flush(). That nested flush() runs the None arm: :2787 resets has_nonnative_backpressure to false, write_buffer[offset..] is empty when the earlier socket.write returned false (the 0 arm at :2895-2898 sets the flag without appending), so :2841 reaches flush_stream_queue and the new guard at :2724 returns 0 with the flag still false. Control returns to the outer loop at :2745, which sees has_backpressure() false and goes on dequeuing stream B; _write at :2869 calls onWrite, the Writable buffers and returns false, the flag is set true, and the next stream's nested flush clears it again. Population: every http2.connect with createConnection and every server over a JS Duplex, at one reset per ended stream. Remedy: skip the :2787 reset while queue_dispatching is set, so the bound holds on the JS arm too, and add the JS-transport variant to the chain test.
Verification: Pre-existing: the "stop when the socket refused bytes" half of this fix does not engage on JS-backed sessions (BunSocket::None), but the base already pushed every queued frame into the JS socket by the same route. In /home/claude/bun/src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs the nested flush() runs has_nonnative_backpressure.set(false) at :2787, :2724 returns 0, and :2745 then sees has_backpressure() false and dequeues the next stream.

🟡 (optional) Servers that end a stream from its last write's callback can now leave that END_STREAM queued until the peer's next WINDOW_UPDATE. The nested flush returns at h2_frame_parser.rs:2724 without sending the zero-length frame the callback queued. The outer pass then hits a stream whose data is blocked by an exhausted connection window and returns at h2_frame_parser.rs:2753, and nothing re-runs it. On the base the nested pass sent that frame at once whenever its stream came first in the map. Fix: when the pass stops on connection-window Backpressure, still flush the window-free frames (0-length END_STREAM, trailers) that callbacks queued, e.g. continue to the remaining streams instead of returning, or run one more pass for len-0 frames before leaving flush_stream_queue.
Why this was flagged
A server with several streams carrying queued DATA, each response ended by the writable's _final from inside the last write's callback. flush_stream_queue at src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs:2737 dequeues S1's last DATA, which uses up the connection window exactly, and dispatch_write_callback at h2_frame_parser.rs:1672 runs the JS. _final calls native.writeStream("", end=true) (src/js/node/http2.ts:2787); send_data at h2_frame_parser.rs:5267 queues the 0-length END_STREAM because outbound_queue_size > 0, then native.flush() reaches flush_stream_queue, which returns 0 at h2_frame_parser.rs:2724-2726. Back in the outer pass the next stream S2 has data and max_size is 0 at h2_frame_parser.rs:1552, so flush_queue returns FlushState::Backpressure and the pass returns at h2_frame_parser.rs:2753. The nested flush's uncork at h2_frame_parser.rs:2964 also unregistered the auto-flusher, so no deferred task re-runs the queue. S1's END_STREAM waits for the peer's next WINDOW_UPDATE. On the base the nested flush_stream_queue sent S1's END_STREAM immediately when S1 preceded S2 in the map order; the PR makes the wait unconditional.
Verification: The nested flush() reaches flush_stream_queue, which now returns 0 at src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs:2724-2726 because queue_dispatching is set. Back in the outer loop, the next stream returns FlushState::Backpressure (1540-1558) and the outer loop returns at 2753. No auto-flush task is registered. On the base, the nested pass sent S1's zero-length frame whenever S1 preceded the blocked streams.

🟡 (optional) Maintainers get a regression test that can pass on the unfixed build and always burns a fixed 2 s on the fixed one. The assertion at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2055 only requires completed < OFFERED after a 2000 ms sleep. The PR's own notes say main is nondeterministic and sometimes stops the chain at 6.73 MB, which is below the 12 MB offered, so the has_backpressure early return at src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs:2745 is not reliably covered. Fix: await an observable signal that the socket refused bytes (for example poll session.socket.writableNeedDrain or writableLength with a deadline), then assert that completed does not advance over a bounded poll window and stays well below the base branch's accepted total, instead of racing against Bun.sleep(2000).
Why this was flagged
The test at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2017-2062 offers OFFERED = 12 MB / 8192 writes, races the stopped promise against Bun.sleep(2000) at line 2054, and passes when completed < OFFERED && completed > 0 at line 2055. On the base branch the chain does not reliably run to the end: the pull request description reports one main run accepting all 64 MB and a second stopping at 6.73 MB, depending on which nested pass met the refused socket write first. A base run that stops anywhere under 12 MB satisfies completed < OFFERED and the test passes without the fix, so deleting the has_backpressure check at src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs:2745 does not reliably break any test. On the fixed build the stopped promise never resolves, so every run waits the full 2000 ms, against the ~1 s per test budget in CLAUDE.md:103 and the test/CLAUDE.md:21 rule not to wait for time to pass. No poll of an observable condition (socket writableNeedDrain, writableLength, or a stalled completed counter) ties the pass to the mechanism under test.
Verification: The base's chain stops below 12 MB on some runs, or any run slower than 2 s; both make the test pass without the fix, and on the fixed build it waits the full 2000 ms. test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2055 only asserts completed < OFFERED after Bun.sleep(2000), so the test does not reliably cover the has_backpressure() return at src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs:2745-2747.

🟡 nit (optional): when anything goes wrong in the 50-stream cases, the test hangs to the file timeout instead of failing with the cause. The awaited allAnswered and allFinished promises at h2-conformance.test.ts:1978-1979 have no reject path, and stream.on("error", () => {}) at line 1981 swallows stream errors. Fix: wire every failure event (session error, the raw socket's error and close, stream error) to reject the awaited promise, as the test at line 1900 does with stream.on("error", reject). [also at: test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2004 - nit: maintainers get new tests that hang to the per-test timeout instead of reporting the cause when a stream or session fails.]
Why this was flagged
In the test.each block at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:1970-2003, Promise.withResolvers is used for allAnswered and allFinished but only the resolve halves are ever called. If the server sends GOAWAY, the raw socket errors, or a stream errors before finish, finished never reaches STREAMS, so await allFinished at line 2000 never settles and the test is reported as a timeout with no message about which stream or event failed. REVIEW.md requires wiring every failure event to reject the awaited promise. The base branch has no such test; the surrounding file already follows the convention at line 1900 (stream.on("error", reject)).
Verification: nit. Trigger: any regression or environmental fault in the 50-stream cases — the test then hangs to the per-test timeout with no cause reported. Mechanism in test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts: lines 1977-1978 destructure only resolve from both Promise.withResolvers calls, so neither promise has a reject path; line 1981 stream.on("error", () => {}) swallows stream errors.

🟡 nit (optional): the child's stderr is checked only for the absence of "RangeError" at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2113, which CLAUDE.md:100 forbids and which cannot catch any other error the fixture prints. Fix: assert the exact value, stderr: "", in the combined toEqual (the test is already release-only under bunEnv, so no debug logging reaches stderr), and drop the comment at line 2111 that narrates the assertion.
Why this was flagged
The spawned fixture at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2072-2117 asserts { stdout, stderr, exitCode } with stderr: expect.not.stringContaining("RangeError") at line 2113. CLAUDE.md:100 says never to write tests that check for the absence of an error string in output, and REVIEW.md asks for exact values (toBe over toContain). A fixture that prints a different uncaught error, a warning, or a deprecation notice still satisfies this clause; only the stdout and exitCode clauses carry the test. The base branch has no such assertion, so this is a weak new assertion rather than a behavior regression.
Verification: nit. Triggering condition: any run of the new spawned fixture — the stderr clause can never be the one that fails. At test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2111-2115 the stderr: expect.not.stringContaining("RangeError") clause is an absence-of-error-string check that cannot fail independently and lets any other stderr output through; CLAUDE.md:100 forbids this.

🟡 (optional) Maintainers get a new test that sets its own 30 s per-test timeout, which test/CLAUDE.md line 120 marks CRITICAL: "Do not set a timeout on tests. Bun already has timeouts." The 30_000 argument at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2117 is not a hang guard: a stack overflow in the child makes the process exit nonzero with "RangeError", so stdout/exitCode already fail the test. It only lets a 3000-stream fixture run far past the ~1 s per-test budget on the release lane. Fix: drop the explicit timeout and keep the fixture inside the default budget, for example by shrinking STREAMS to the smallest count that still overflows the unfixed stack, or by trusting the three 50-stream depth cases above and removing the spawned case.
Why this was flagged
The spawned fixture test at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2063-2118 passes 30_000 as the third argument to test(), a per-test timeout. test/CLAUDE.md:120 says "CRITICAL: Do not set a timeout on tests. Bun already has timeouts." No other test in this file sets a per-test timeout; the only other numeric trailing argument (10_000 at line 1636) is a waitFor bound, not a test timeout. On the base branch the file has no such override. When the fixture fails for the reason it guards against, the child dies with an uncaught RangeError (exit code nonzero, no "3000 responses ended" line), so the assertion at lines 2111-2115 fails on its own; the timeout therefore exists only to let a slow workload (the PR text says ~15 s on debug, skipped there) run past the default on release. A test that needs 30 s on the release lane also conflicts with the ~1 s per-test guidance and the review rule "Don't raise per-test timeouts to make a slow test pass; shrink the workload."
Verification: The new test at test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts:2063-2118 (added by this diff) passes 30_000 as the third argument to test.skipIf(isDebug || isASAN)(...) at line 2117, i.e. a per-test timeout override. The applicable test/CLAUDE.md line 120 reads: "CRITICAL: Do not set a timeout on tests. Bun already has timeouts." The rule is real and the new test breaks it.
