What does this PR do?

bun check now reports what TypeScript 7.1 Beta reports. It was a port of the TypeScript 7.0 checker. This PR moves the tests, the built-in lib.*.d.ts files and the checker to v7.1-beta, adds what's new in 7.1 (import attributes on ambient modules, source phase imports, es2026, content mappers, the stricter check of distributive conditional types), and deletes the code that only reproduced what 7.1 dropped. bun fmt and bun lint accept the new syntax. It also fixes three faults since #46001 and two reported issues, makes the check faster, and adds bun lint --verbose.

In short

before this PR
TypeScript 7.1 Beta's own tests, configurations that pass 12,818 of 13,691 13,698 of 13,698
the same tests: run out of memory 3 0
the 2,417 stored programs on which bun check once differed from tsc: differ from tsc 7.1 Beta 151 0
vscode, MUI's docs, supabase, t3code, mikro-orm: lines of output that differ from tsc 7.1 Beta 0

"Before" is this branch's first commit: main's checker with 7.1's tests. One test is skipped by name, see "Suggestions" below. One more stored program prints the directories above the project with --traceResolution, which differ where the two tools run. It isn't counted.

Time: 7.1's rules cost 0 to 2.6% on these five projects, and the changes under "Speed" give back 1.2 to 4.5%.

How far apart 7.0.2 and 7.1 Beta are, measured with the two tsc binaries:

differ
the 12,298 tests of TypeScript that are the same in both versions 175: in 68 only a printed type, in 47 only the text of a message, 40 have more errors, 14 fewer, 6 have an error at another place
100 open-source projects, root tsconfig.json, without node_modules 24. About 900 of 697,000 errors each way, 840 of them the first two under "The same error at another place or with another code"
errors in projects with their dependencies installed vscode 480 to 490, supabase 1 to 10, t3code 5 to 6

New in TypeScript 7.1

Import attributes on ambient modules

A pattern ambient module can say which import attributes it's for.

declare module "*.css" with { type: "css" } {
  const sheet: CSSStyleSheet;
  export default sheet;
}
declare module "*" with { type: "text" } {
  const text: string;
  export default text;
}

import sheet from "./a.css" with { type: "css" }; // CSSStyleSheet
import text from "./a.ts" with { type: "text" }; // string
import none from "./b.css";                       // TS2307

An import, an export, an import type, an @import tag or import() resolves to such a module if the pattern matches and the import has all of the module's attributes. Of several that match, the one with the most attributes wins, then the longest prefix. New errors: TS1550 (the name has no *), TS1551 (on a module augmentation), TS1552 to TS1558 (a member that isn't name: "string literal").

For programs without with on a module:

  • Any attribute is allowed on a type-only import or export and on an import type. TS2857, TS1463 and TS1464 are gone.
  • resolution-mode counts next to other attributes. It used to count only if it was the one attribute.
  • An import with attributes prefers a pattern ambient module to the file it resolves to.
  • A specifier that resolves to a file that isn't a module falls back to the pattern ambient modules before TS2306.
  • In import("m", { with: { type: "json" } }) the object after with is in a const context: { readonly type: "json" }.
  • Declaration files keep the attributes of imports and exports as written. Only resolution-mode used to be kept.
Source phase imports
import source mod from "./mod.wasm"; // mod: AbstractModuleSource
const later = import.source("./mod.wasm"); // Promise<AbstractModuleSource>

The specifier is never resolved, so a missing file is no error. Only a default binding is allowed (TS18111, TS18112). --module has to be esnext, nodenext or preserve (TS18113). bun check used to read source as the name of a default import and reported a row of syntax errors.

On the way, import defer "m" became an error (TS18117), and defer written with an escape is no longer a modifier.

--target es2026, --lib es2026, and ES2026 is the default target

Array.fromAsync, Error.isError, getOrInsert and getOrInsertComputed of Map and WeakMap, Math.sumPrecise, Iterator.concat, JSON.rawJSON and the base64 and hex methods of Uint8Array moved out of esnext into lib.es2026.*.d.ts. Without target, the library is lib.es2026.full.d.ts, so they need no option at all:

const total = Math.sumPrecise([0.1, 0.2, 0.3]);
const lists = new Map<string, number[]>();
lists.getOrInsert("a", []).push(1);
const bytes = Uint8Array.fromBase64("aGk=");

With an older target, TS2550 and TS2583 suggest es2026. lib also accepts the seven es2026.* libraries and esnext.modulesource. esnext.array, esnext.collection, esnext.error and esnext.typedarrays are aliases of the es2026 files.

New library methods in esnext

The built-in lib.*.d.ts files are those of 7.1 Beta: 116 files, 12 new, 4 gone, 9 changed, lib.dom.d.ts and lib.es5.d.ts among them.

// --target esnext
const both = await Promise.allKeyed({ user: fetchUser(), count: fetchCount() }); // { user: User; count: number }
const pairs = Iterator.zip([[1, 2], ["a", "b"]]);                                // IteratorObject<[number, string]>

Also Promise.allSettledKeyed, Iterator.zipKeyed, and chunks, join and includes on iterators.

Content mappers and --runExternalCode

A tsconfig.json can list packages that turn other kinds of files into TypeScript. bun check checks the generated text and reports each error at the matching position in the original file.

// tsconfig.json
{ "contentMappers": [{ "package": "my-vue-mapper", "extensions": [".vue"] }], "include": ["src/**/*.ts", "src/**/*.vue"] }
// node_modules/my-vue-mapper/package.json
{ "typescript": { "contentMapper": { "exec": ["node", "./mapper.js"] } } }
$ bun check --runExternalCode
src/App.vue(12,7): error TS2322: Type 'string' is not assignable to type 'number'.
  • Nothing starts without the flag. bun check then only reads the package's package.json and reports TS18068, like tsc.

  • The flag only counts if it's typed on the command line, among the command's own flags. It has no effect in a tsconfig.json (TS6266) or one that's extended, in bunfig.toml, in BUN_OPTIONS or in a response file. tsc accepts it in a response file.

  • Everything else that type-checks can run the mappers too, under the same rule:

    to allow it
    bun check --runExternalCode
    bun --check app.ts, bun run --check, bun test --check, bun build --check, bun bake --check --runExternalCode, before the script or the entry point
    Bun.build check: { runExternalCode: true }. check: true never runs a mapper, whatever the command line of the process says

    With --watch and --hot, each check starts the programs and ends them again, with their threads and pipes. A build that's cancelled, because its worker is terminated or its process exits, stops its programs. process.execArgv has the flag if it counted, so a process that the program forks is checked like the program. A process that's started in another way needs its own flag.

  • bun lint never runs a mapper. What's imported from a mapped file has no type there, so type-aware rules see less.

  • compilerOptions reach a mapper as tsc sends them: lib as file names (lib.es2015.d.ts for "es6"), and jsx, module, target and the like as numbers.

  • The flag lets the project choose programs that run with your permissions: the tsconfig.json says which packages, each package.json says which command. Use it only where you trust both.

  • The command in exec is started once per package and version, without a shell, in the package's directory. As in tsc, it inherits the environment. It gets JSON-RPC requests on its standard input and answers on its standard output. What it writes to standard error is shown. tsc discards that.

  • If a mapper asks for node and there's none in $PATH, Bun runs the script itself.

  • As in tsc, initialize has to be answered within five seconds, and openProject and transform have no limit.

  • Every program is killed and waited for before the report is printed. On Linux the kernel also kills it if bun dies first.

  • No answer is trusted: offsets and lengths have to be inside the text, mappings sorted and without overlap, and verbatim mappings need the same text on both sides. Each violation is TypeScript's error for it, on that file. After five such files the mapper isn't used again.

  • An error in generated text that has no original position stays in the generated text, with note TS18074. outputExtensions decide the names of declaration files (x.d.vue.ts) and the specifiers in them.

  • In the logs of Bun.build, a mapper's own error has the mapper's label, m7, not TS7.

Of 127 projects with mappers that behave well or badly, 115 print what tsc 7.1 Beta prints. The other 12 differ in the wording of a JSON error, in which five files fail first, which varies in tsc too, or where tsc hangs after its report.

A type parameter is a new type inside a conditional type that distributes over it

The one breaking change that TypeScript 7.1 announces. In T extends U ? X : Y with a plain T, every T inside the conditional type is one member of the union at a time. A type that's only known to be assignable to the whole T is no longer assignable to it.

type Show<A extends number, B extends A> = `${B} extends ${A}`;
type Issue<A extends number, B extends A> = A extends B ? never : Show<A, B>;
//                                                                      ~
// TS2344: Type 'B' does not satisfy the constraint 'A'.
// 'B' is only assignable to the non-distributed 'A', but 'A' has been distributed here.

Issue<0 | 1, 0 | 1> used to produce Show<0, 0 | 1>, which breaks the constraint of Show. (T) extends .. and [T] extends [..] don't distribute and are checked as before.

At least 4 of vscode's 10 new errors come from this. A generic method such as resolve<T>(value: T): Promise<T extends E<infer R> ? R : T> no longer implements an interface method that's written the same way (TS2416).

TS5114 and TS5115 say which types are instantiated without end

At 100 nested instantiations 7.0 reported TS2589. 7.1 looks for the types that are being instantiated three times or more. With one such type it reports TS5114, with several TS5115, and TS2589 only if there's none. The limits are the same.

type Foo<T extends "true", B> = { "true": Foo<T, Foo<T, B>> }[T];
let f1: Foo<"true", {}>;
// ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TS5114: Instantiations of type 'Foo' appear infinitely circular.

The error is reported once. A later Foo<"true", {}> finds what the first one stored.

A limit on the size of a template literal type

A template literal type with more than 50,000,000 bytes of text or more than 100,000 placeholders is TS2589. bun check had no limit and could run out of memory.

Private names in type queries
export class C {
  #a = 1;
  copy(other: C) {
    const a: typeof other.#a = 1; // number. Was TS1003 "Identifier expected."
    return a;
  }
  b: typeof this.#a = 1; // with `declaration`: TS7080, a declaration file has no private members
}
bun fmt and bun lint accept the new syntax

A file with declare module "*.css" with { .. }, import source, import.source() or typeof c.#a passed bun check and was a syntax error for the other two. It now parses in every kind of TypeScript file, with every kind of config.

  • bun fmt prints the attributes of an ambient module like those of an import. With the importOrder plugins, import source a from "a" was written back as import a from "a". Every sorter keeps the phase now.
  • bun lint: @typescript-eslint/consistent-type-imports, unicorn/prefer-export-from, import/no-duplicates and no-duplicate-imports skip an import in the source phase. The fix of prefer-export-from dropped the source. no-unused-private-class-members counts typeof this.#a as a use. @typescript-eslint/no-empty-object-type and ban-types allow declare module "a" with {}.

What people will notice

New errors in code that passed

A destructured parameter whose default lacks a property. 7.0 only looked at the elements that have a default in the pattern. 7.1 looks at all but the rest element. These are supabase's 9 new errors:

type Item = { icon: (props?: { className?: string; id?: string }) => string };
const items: Item[] = [{ icon: ({ className, ...props } = {}) => String(className) + String(props.id) }];
// ~~~~~~~~~ TS7031: Binding element 'className' implicitly has an 'any' type.

Without a contextual type the same pattern got TS2339 and gets TS7031 now.

The order of inference candidates. 7.0 put a candidate first if it was found deeper in type arguments. 7.1 keeps the order in which they're found. t3code's new error comes from this: a TS2322 in a call that infers T from two arguments. It works both ways. This false error is gone:

interface Column<T> { dataIndex?: (T | (string & {}))[] }
declare function table<T>(rows: readonly T[], columns: Column<T>[]): void;
declare const rows: { id: number }[];
table(rows, [{ dataIndex: ["id"] }]); // was TS2345: '{ id: number; }[]' is not assignable to 'readonly string[]'

A class whose base type needs the class's own members. 7.0 set the members that a class declares before it instantiated the base types. 7.1 sets nothing until the end, so a request in the meantime starts over until 100 instantiations are nested. Recursive schemas in the style of zod can run into the same.

class Model<Attributes = any> { createdAt!: Date }
type ModelAttributes<T> = Omit<T, keyof Model>;
class AutoModel<T> extends Model<ModelAttributes<T>> {}
class PersonModel extends AutoModel<PersonModel> { age!: number }
// ~~~~~~~~~~~ TS5115: Instantiations of the following types appear infinitely circular: 'Model', 'ModelAttributes', 'Exclude'.

More of the kind, each with the error that's new:

  • <T>x in a .mts or .cts file: TS7059. 7.0 only reported the generic arrow function there (TS7060).
  • What a misplaced return, yield or export = contains is checked, and so is the expression in a computed enum member name. Names in there count as used.
  • A private name in a destructuring pattern: TS18064. An unused local in a static { } block: TS6133.
  • u.foo = 1 where u is C1 | C2 and the setter is protected in C2: TS2445. A property of a union is as writable as its least writable member, and a property of an intersection is as accessible as its most accessible member.
  • new of a type with several construct signatures, one of them private or protected: TS2673 or TS2674. Only the first signature used to be looked at.
  • { draft?: boolean } & T & Partial<T> whose T is constrained by a type that refers back to the call's result: TS2502 and TS7022, as both versions report for T & Partial<T>.
  • { import { b } from "missing"; } at the top level of a file: TS2307 next to TS1232.
  • With isolatedModules, import { Date } from "./types"; export default Date; where Date is only a type: TS2866 next to TS1292.
  • export default () => makeFoo() whose type can't be named in a declaration file: TS4082. bun check reported nothing, and 7.0.2 crashes there.
  • a ** b as T ** c is a syntax error. bun fmt and bun lint still accept it, as Prettier, oxfmt, typescript-eslint and oxlint do.
  • /(?i:a)/ needs --target es2025 (TS18062), and so do two groups of the same name in different alternatives (TS18063).
  • All of the type in a @type tag on a JavaScript function is checked, also what nothing reads: /** @type {(e: unknown) => e is Missing} */ is TS2304.
  • tsconfig.json: a compiler option at the root of a file without compilerOptions is TS6258, an unknown option gets a spelling suggestion, a project reference with an invalid path or circular is TS5024, a network path is TS5116.
Errors that are gone
  • (a ? b ?? null : null) ?? 0 no longer gets TS2871.
  • A typo after this. in a method of an object literal only gets its TS2339. 7.0 also reported TS7023 for the methods, and errors in the other members could get lost.
  • A class that's exported with export = next to a type, or through an alias that's merged with a namespace, has a name in declaration files. It was written out as an object type, which is TS4094 if it has a private member.
  • type T = { a: "b"; [k]: number }; declare const k: T["a"]; no longer gets TS2456 and TS2502.
  • TS7022 and TS7023 in a call that's resolved recursively, while a type predicate is inferred, for a static property that's contextually typed by its own class, and for a[k] === c.
  • In JavaScript: @extends {Base<string>} works on any base expression (TS8026 is gone there), a .js file with JSX finds the JSX runtime, const { a } = require("m") in a .cjs file under --module preserve with verbatimModuleSyntax no longer gets TS1293, and this.x whose declaration is an assignment in the same method no longer gets TS2565.
  • A module that the importing file declares itself with declare module "name" isn't looked up on disk, so the package of that name in node_modules doesn't become part of the program.
Declaration errors are reported once there are no other errors

With declaration or composite, 7.0's tsc --noEmit printed the errors about declaration files (TS4023, TS4025, TS2883, the TS90xx errors of isolatedDeclarations) next to the type errors. 7.1 asks for them only if it found nothing else, as TypeScript 6 did.

So a library sees its declaration errors after its type errors are fixed. What passed still passes, what failed still fails, and the exit code is the same. bun check -b reports what tsc -b reports: both kinds together, unless the project has noEmit.

The same error at another place or with another code
  • override [key]() {} in a class without a base class, or with one that can't be resolved, is TS4127 ("its name is dynamic"). It was TS4112. 183 of the 185 such errors in the 100 projects are in drizzle-orm (static override readonly [entityKind]).
  • TS2875 (the module react/jsx-runtime is missing) is reported at the file's first JSX tag. 7.0 reported it at the first tag it checked. That's 655 errors in the 100 projects. bun check already did what 7.1 does.
  • TS2589 at the depth limit is TS5114 or TS5115, see above.
  • TS2473, TS2430 and TS2320 for a merged enum or interface are decided by its first declaration.
  • An @overload without @returns is TS7010 with the function's name. It was TS7012.
  • import "./dir/" under nodenext is TS2834. It was TS2835 with the suggestion './dir/.js'.
Printed types
  • A property that's named by an enum member keeps it: { [E.A]: number; }, not { a: number; }.
  • A type nested in a truncated one is ..., not { ...; } or [...]. Truncation starts once one declaration is nested more than 10 levels deep.
  • A cycle that's cut in a declaration file is TS5088 everywhere, not only in a conditional type.
  • The name?: undefined properties that object literals in a union get from each other are in the order of their own declarations. In 7.0 the order depended on an unrelated earlier expression.
  • readonly [..] for an as const tuple whose contextual type is never.
  • import * as ns of a module with export = that declare module "m" adds to is typeof import("m"), not the path of the file.
Declaration files

bun check doesn't write them, but it reports their errors.

export const { a, b: [c] } = value;
// 7.0: export declare const a: number, c: string;
// 7.1: export declare const { a, b: [c] }: { a: number; b: [string] };

So the errors are reported for the type of the whole initializer, and TS9019 of isolatedDeclarations only for a pattern with an initializer. Also: the JSDoc modifiers of this.x = .. in a JavaScript class are kept (private a; protected readonly b: string;), the f.x = .. assignments of a function that becomes visible late are emitted, and five places where 7.0 crashed have an answer.

Specifiers that are generated for a printed import(".."): a package's file has its extension in an ES module, /index is kept next to a file with the directory's name, a package that node_modules lookup can't reach from the file isn't referred to by name, and a directory with its own package.json inside a package is tried.

The version, and typesVersions

process.versions.typescript is 7.1.0-beta. It's also the version that typesVersions ranges such as ">=7.1" and types@ keys in exports are tested against, and the one that --traceResolution prints.

Module resolution and tsconfig.json
  • Every candidate path is normalized, and one that ends with a separator is only tried as a directory. That applies to type roots, the fields of package.json, the targets of exports, typesVersions and rootDirs.
  • /// <reference path="a" /> in a.ts is TS1006: the resolved file is compared, not the text.
  • include no longer adds a file a second time that files lists under another spelling.
  • rootDir and baseUrl are compared with the case sensitivity of the file system. 7.0 always ignored case.
  • An absolute path in include is normalized, and paths that start with ${configDir} are merged as in 7.1.
  • A response file that includes itself is read once.

Fixes

One TS2589 too many, since #46001
type Tn<T, N extends number, A extends 0[] = []> = T extends unknown ? A["length"] extends N ? T : Tn<T, N, [...A, 0]> : never;
interface C<T> { m<U>(a0: Tn<T, 1000>, a1: U): void }
declare const r: C<string>;
r.m<number>("x", 1);
r.m<number>();

This printed TS2589 at line 4 and again at line 5. tsc prints it at line 4 only, because it stores the error type like any other result. A second call with another type argument, the short call before the good one, and the same with a class or a rest parameter were wrong in every release and are right now.

A tuple intersected with its alias, since #46001
type AT = [number, string[]];
declare function f<T>(x: (a: [T, T[]]) => void): [T];
declare const s: (a: AT & [number, string[]]) => void;
export const r: never = f(s);

This inferred string for T. tsc infers number: the apparent type of AT & [number, string[]] is the one tuple that both members become. bun check inferred property by property, and #46001 put Array's members first. v[2] on a v: AT & [number, string[]] is TS2493 now, as in tsc.

No TS7053 for an index into a binding element whose default is {}
export const f = ({ q = {} }, k: string) => q[k];
// ~~~~ TS7053: Element implicitly has an 'any' type because
// expression of type 'string' can't be used to index type '{}'.

bun check reported nothing, or TS2339 for q["x"], if the pattern was a parameter of an arrow function, a function expression or a method of an object literal. So a // @ts-expect-error above such a line was reported as unused.

Fixes #46181

undefined was added to an optional property's type a second time
declare global { var flags: {}; }
declare const w: { flags?: {} } & typeof globalThis;
const t: typeof globalThis = { ...w }; // false TS2322: Type '{} | undefined' is not assignable to type '{}'.

function g({ a = 2 } = { a: 1 }) {}
g({ a: undefined }); // missing TS2322: Type 'undefined' is not assignable to type 'number'.

This also removes a false TS1320 for await of such an intersection with an optional then, and false TS2322 for the rest element, the JSX spread and the inference from such a copy.

Fixes #45922

A lost TS2589 in a declaration whose constraint has no end
type R<N extends number, A extends 0[] = []> =
  A["length"] extends N ? { end: 1 } : { [K in keyof R<N, [...A, 0]>]: R<N, [...A, 0]>[K] };
//                                                                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TS2589

bun check printed nothing, in every release: it asked only the first member of the constraint, a union, for a number index signature, where tsc asks all. This program needs 30 ms, in tsc 8 s.

Unused declarations

Each of these is an error in tsc, with noUnusedLocals, and wasn't in bun check:

declare const dec: any;
@dec((x: B) => x) class B {}          // TS6196: a class's decorators are inside the class
interface Foo { x: typeof Foo }       // TS6196, TS6133: inside a declaration of the merged symbol
const Foo = 1;
type Local = number; // TS6196: the type arguments of an import type that doesn't resolve
export declare const x: import("./missing").G<Local>;
const { K } = require("./mod");       // TS6133: `K` is a value, so the lookup of a type doesn't find it
/** @param {K} k */

The cause is under "Speed".

Types in loops, and in code that can't be reached

tsc computes the type of a variable that's assigned in a loop in rounds, and checks some expressions again while a round isn't finished. About 40 changes port when it checks an expression again, what it keeps from a round, and what it reports then. Two of them:

type Letter = "a" | "b" | "c";
declare function pair<T>(first: T, second: T): T;
declare const next: { a: "b"; b: "c"; c: "a" };
declare const list: Letter[], more: boolean;
export function f() {
  let z: Letter = "b";
  for (const item of list) {
    do {
      z = pair(z, z); // was a false TS2345
      z = next[z];
    } while (more);
  }
}
export function h(x: number | undefined) {
  if (x === 1) {
    let y = x;
    y = 2; // new in 7.1: TS2322, `y` is `1`
  }
}

A generic call that fails in a loop, such as y = gen(y, p => 1) where y isn't the array that gen expects, only gets its TS2345. It also got TS7006 for p.

In nested loops behind a while (root) {}, which narrows root to never, TS2339 for root.v was missing in the body of an arrow function, in a member of an object literal, in return (root.v) and in yield root.v. tsc checks those twice.

Generated functions whose errors differ from tsc 7.1 Beta's, on one thread: 7 of 120,000 with code after a call that returns never, an assert(false) or an exhaustive switch (before: 839 of the first 60,000), 14 of 100,000 with loops that assign to two or three variables (224), 19 of 40,000 with &&, ||, ?? in what's assigned (1,734), and 9 of 40,000 with initializers and switch (true).

Three false errors, in every release
class Base { init(): this { return this; } }
class A extends Base { x = 1; }
declare const v: Base & A;
const s = { ...v };
export const z: typeof s = { x: 1 }; // was TS2741: a spread kept the method `init`. Reported in #46395.

type Inner<T extends unknown[]> = { [K in keyof T]: T[K] };
export const x: Inner<NoInfer<[string]>> = ["x"]; // was TS2322. Reported in #46429.

declare function hold<S>(value: S): S;
function make<T>(value: T) { return hold({ get current() { return value; } }); }
export const n: number = make(1).current; // was TS2322: `current` stayed `T`. Reported in #46371.
A nested object literal lost its widening
type State<T> = T extends { states: infer S } ? keyof S : "leaf";
declare function create<T>(config: T): { [K in keyof T]: State<T[K]> };
function machine<Q>() {
  return create({ busy: { initial: "a", states: { a: {}, b: {} } } });
}
function f<T>() {
  const busy: "a" | "b" = machine<T>().busy; // was TS2322: Type '"leaf"' is not assignable to type '"a" | "b"'
}

A second instantiation made the widened copy of a nested literal fresh again, and initial was an excess property. In every release. It's xstate's createActor(machine).getSnapshot().matches(..) in a generic function, as in sanity-io/sanity.

Components like Vue's defineComponent, stores like Pinia's defineStore
type Computed = { [k: string]: (() => any) | string };
type Values<C> = { [K in keyof C]: C[K] extends () => infer R ? R : never };
declare function define<D = {}, C extends Computed = {}>(o: {
  data?(): D;
  computed?: C & ThisType<D & Values<C>>;
  watch?: { [K in keyof D]?: (now: D[K]) => void };
}): D & Values<C>;
export const a = define({
  data() { return { n: 0 }; },
  computed: {
    double() { return this.n * 2; },        // TS7023. Was TS2362 for `this.n`.
    text() { return String(this.double); }, // TS7023. Was no error.
  },
  watch: { n(now) {} },
});

now needs D, so tsc first infers from the members before it. That asks for the return type of double, whose this needs D again: a circularity. bun check typed this as the uninstantiated D & Values<C> there. It now also stores a comparison that ran into a circular return type, and doesn't check again what such a function returns, as tsc does. In a store whose getters read each other through this, a TS7023 was reported where tsc has TS2362. Still different: a message that prints this component has double(): any, tsc has double(): number.

main now
1,216 generated components and stores, in both file orders: print what tsc 7.1 Beta prints on one thread 304 1,173
the same on 8 threads: have more than one answer 240 30

What else was wrong in such stores, on main too:

  • TS2577 was reported at the return type of a generic helper in a library file when a getter returns pick(this, "key"). tsc collects a file's errors right after it has checked the file, so an error that a later file finds there isn't printed.
  • A message that prints an object literal with a property of the error type printed any for its other properties too. tsc checks such a property's initializer again when it prints the type, and reports what that finds.
  • If two visits of a getter nest, the inner one's type counts, as in tsc. The outer one overwrote it.
  • The errors of a getter's returned expression that's checked once, inside a circular resolution, are the ones reported. Its operands were checked again later, where this can have another type.
  • tsc checks return (e) twice, and the errors of both checks are reported now. get twice() { return (this.on * 2); } with a boolean on got TS7023 where tsc has TS2362.
TS2589, TS5114 and TS5115 at the attributes of a JSX element

tsc checks the attributes of an element as an expression, so a limit that's reached there is reported at the first attribute. It was reported at the tag, where a // @ts-expect-error above the attribute doesn't cover it, and that comment got TS2578.

Found by running 340 projects through tsc and bun check

Open-source projects with a tsconfig.json were checked with tsc 7.1 Beta and with bun check, at 1 and 8 threads, and the whole output was compared.

projects tsconfig.json files
tried 340 1,136
could be compared 328 934
same output, after the fixes below 313 909

No crash, and every run ended. Of the 25 files that still differ, 15 have project references, which bun check -p follows without a build (with -b the output is the same), and 2 come from the setup. The rest is under "Known issues". The 145 biggest projects were also checked with skipLibCheck off: 120 of 144 have the same output. In 14 of the other 24, only the explanation under one error in drizzle-orm's declarations differs.

803 of these files were also checked 15 times each at 2 to 32 threads: all 12,045 outputs equal the one of 1 thread, byte for byte. Some generated programs still depend on the threads, see "Known issues".

Time against tsc with 4 checkers, for the 279 files on which tsc needs a second or more: the median is 0.46 of tsc's time at 1 thread and 0.21 at 8. At 8 threads bun check was slower on 4 of them, clawhub among them, before its fix.

Wrong before 7.1 too
  • TS2740 and TS2739 list the first four missing properties. For a class that's merged with a namespace, such as typeof import("ws"), they were listed in another order than in tsc.
  • A property that reaches an intersection through several members was listed once per member, and a chain of such intersections doubled the list at every level, until memory ran out.
  • import type { I } from "./types"; export default I; with noUnusedLocals was TS6196.
  • Destructured variables are narrowed together if another file declares the pattern.
  • typeof this.m inside the private member m counts as a read of m. It was TS6133.
  • let m = key where key is keyof of an object with a computed enum name is widened to string.
  • No "Circular definition of import alias" for the type of an alias that isn't a value.
  • TS2341 and TS2445 were missing in the pattern of a parameter or a for of whose type is a type parameter, if a member of its constraint reduces to never.
  • A variable that's only assigned in a template (`x${(w = 1)}`), in an enum member's initializer or in the count of a shift counts as used. It was TS6133.
  • .js: an unused function or #method with @overload tags gets one TS6133, at its name, not one more per tag.
  • .js: the name after @see is parsed. /** @see Foo. */ is TS1003, /** @see {Foo[]} */ is TS1005.
  • A method that several members of an intersection declare is a property in a spread or a rest: { m: (() => number) & (() => string); }, not { m(): number; m(): string; }.
  • With declaration, TS2488 for [...o] was lost on one thread if an earlier file's declarations asked for its type first.
  • TS2454 was missing after a very long list of statements: the analysis gave up after 2,000,000 steps and used the declared type.
  • In a generic function or class, TS2339 for this.zz in a method of an object literal that's passed to a generic call prints the parameter's declared type, { v: T; cb: (x: T) => U; }.

Speed

8 threads on 8 cores, median of 11 runs, this branch before the changes below against after them: vscode 2,860 to 2,730 ms (-4.5%), supabase -4.0%, mikro-orm -3.0%, MUI's docs -2.7%, t3code -1.2%. Peak memory is level or lower, and the output is the same.

  • Unused declarations. bun check resolved every type reference and every access to a private member's name a second time. Now, as in tsc, they mark what they resolve to where they're resolved. What noUnusedLocals costs on vscode fell from 1.69 G to 0.39 G instructions, and the four programs under "Unused declarations" are right.

  • The arguments of a call with one generic candidate are checked twice, not three times: once to infer T and once against the instantiated parameter type, as in tsc. vscode on one thread: -2.1%, and 48 MB less.

  • No contextual type for a member or an element whose type has nothing to widen. In { model, dispose: () => store.dispose(), label: "x" } only label has a literal type, so the context is only asked for there. vscode on one thread: -1.1%.

  • Files are loaded in the order in which the program walks them. Time to load: vscode 569 to 544 ms, supabase 352 to 333 ms, MUI's docs 255 to 242 ms.

  • Two scans that were quadratic. A class with 50,000 methods fell from 7.19 G to 0.94 G instructions, 30 files with 1,000 decorated classes each from 3.55 G to 2.48 G.

  • Three of the binder's tables store only what's needed: 34 to 18 MB on vscode.

  • A file's syntax tree stays until the end of the run. Freeing it early lowered vscode's peak by only 40 MB.

  • 224 rare arms of the checker's hot functions are marked as cold. vscode: about 1% fewer cycles, 3.5% fewer taken branches. The four other projects: 0.6 to 1.8% fewer cycles. This isn't in the numbers above.

  • Very long and very deep code. The time grew with the square of the length or faster. CPU seconds on one thread:

    main now tsc 7.1
    100,000 operands of || in a .js file that's only bound; 50,000 assignments in a try block 2.6; 0.67 0.05; 0.07 23
    50,000 operands of ||; of ?? 7.5; 7.2 0.05; 0.07 29; 57
    if .. else if .. with 20,000 branches; 300,000 operands of && in an argument 1.4; over 100 0.14; 0.9
    literals in the argument of a generic call: objects 2,000 deep; arrays 1,600 deep 2.3; 39 0.62; 0.26 8.1
    r.push(i) on a typed array: 20,000 lines; 80,000 lines 5.1; 70 0.13; 0.71 9.7
    80,000 lines of r["k"] = i; 100,000 lines of map.set("k", i) 88; 18 0.45; 0.6
    20,000 lines of exports.k = function () {} in a checked .js file; of this.k = i in a constructor 2.8; 2.9 0.32; 0.23
    5,000 lines of s += "x"; 1,900 lines of rows.push({ .. }) on an untyped array 4.3; 2.0 0.44; 0.27 2.6
    an if that compares a number with 20,000 others, joined by || 20 0.6 over 100 for 10,000

    Generated tables and route lists are such long lists of statements. Each reference walked back through all the statements before it, in tsc too. Files without a long list are checked as before, and vscode needs the same time.

One project was far slower than tsc: openclaw/clawhub, which uses convex and TanStack Router. At 1 thread it needed 806 s, tsc 28.8 s. It's on main too.

8 threads errors
before 176.6 s 4, all false
this PR 10.9 and 14.8 s 0
tsc 7.1 Beta, 4 checkers 35.5 s 0

A literal that was spread, widened or checked again during inference was instantiated without need, so nesting reached the depth limit of 100 in convex's generated api type.

bun lint on real projects

bun lint ran on open-source projects with their own config, next to the linter that each project uses. The reports were compared by file, line, column, severity and rule. The counts are with this PR and #46439.

config compared with projects could be compared same reports
eslint.config.js the project's own ESLint and plugins 93 72 58
.eslintrc the project's own ESLint (6 to 9), plugins and arguments 36 30 22, before the fixes below
.oxlintrc.json, nothing installed oxlint 1.87.0 193 146 133
.oxlintrc.json that needs its packages oxlint 1.87.0 on the same copy 46 37 34

microsoft/vscode (13,212 files) and nodejs/node (7,924 files) have no report under ESLint and none here. nrwl/nx (5,433 files) uses oxlint with its own JavaScript plugin: the same 6 lines.

Types for rules that run in JavaScript

A plugin rule that called typescript-eslint's getParserServices() threw "You have used a rule which requires type information", and the run ended with exit code 2. Now, in a file whose ESLint config turns on type information, such a rule gets types from bun check:

  • getTypeAtLocation(node), or program.getTypeChecker().getTypeAtLocation(esTreeNodeToTSNodeMap.get(node)).

  • Of a type: flags and getFlags(), symbol and getSymbol() with name and getName(), and how many call and construct signatures it has.

  • A rule that reads anything else, for example TypeChecker.getBaseConstraintOfType in @eslint-react/no-leaked-conditional-rendering, never gets a guess. It's skipped in that file only: none of its reports and fixes in the file count, the file's other rules aren't affected, and in every other file it reports and fixes as usual.

  • So a file's result depends on that file only. The output and what --fix writes are the same in every run, with any number of threads.

  • Such a run exits with code 2. One line says in how many files, and what was read:

    2 rules did not run in 5 files because rules that run in JavaScript cannot read this from a type: demo/rename (Type.oddA, Type.oddB), demo/symbols (getSymbolAtLocation(Identifier))

  • TypeScript 5 and 6 number ts.TypeFlags differently. As under ESLint, the numbers are those of the typescript that @typescript-eslint/parser resolves, per file, also in pnpm's layout. Without a typescript, flags is refused by name and the rest works.

  • For one file's 1,684 nodes of 153 kinds, the flags and the symbol's name are those that ESLint 10.12.0 with typescript-eslint 8.72.0 and TypeScript 5.9.3 gives, but for the few kinds that docs/lint/plugins.mdx lists, which are refused by name.

  • Only files in which a rule asks are type-checked, and types are found only for the kinds of node that rules have asked about. --timing prints "linted with types: N files".

pmndrs/jotai, pmndrs/zustand, TanStack/query and pnpm/pnpm exited with 2 and now have ESLint's reports, line by line.

Of 28 sets of rules that use types, 19 plugins and 9 projects' own rules, this covers 3. 13 more members of the type checker would cover 14.

With ESLint 8, complexity doesn't count ?. and default values, and reports the whole function. chartjs/Chart.js, testing-library/dom-testing-library
An installed ESLint 8 counted as 9 if the config is an eslint.config.js. Its rules and its default options now apply with either kind of config. Every unused catch (e) was a false error.
With an .eslintrc and ESLint 9 installed, the rules, their default options and schemas, the list of rules, eslint:recommended and eslint:all are ESLint 9's. Every .eslintrc counted as ESLint 8: an unused catch (e) wasn't reported, while (true) was, reportUsedIgnorePattern was refused with exit code 2, and no-useless-assignment was "not found".
With ESLint 9, no-compare-neg-zero and no-unused-private-class-members have no suggestions. Those are new in ESLint 10.
@typescript-eslint/no-throw-literal and no-useless-template-literals, which version 8 renamed, run under their old names if the installed typescript-eslint has them, in reports, eslint-disable comments and --rule too. They were refused, with exit code 2. testing-library/dom-testing-library

Tables that only some configs read are embedded compressed: the executable is 64 to 73 KB smaller.

What still differs
  • An older version is installed than the built-in rules follow. eslint/eslint has eslint-plugin-n 17 and gets 55 n/no-unsupported-features/node-builtins errors from version 18's rule. bun lint prints a note with both versions. It's the same with oxlint, where new rules join categories that a config turns on: vercel/ai has no report with its oxlint 1.56, 46,964 with 1.87.0 and 46,948 here.
  • With an .eslintrc, a file that needs the config's parser isn't linted, and the exit code is 2: 182 .vue files in uptime-kuma, Flow in facebook/react and parcel-bundler/parcel.
  • Flow that happens to parse as JavaScript is linted as JavaScript: an import type is "never used".
  • Rules that aren't built in, with exit code 2: in 12 of the 193 oxlint projects. jsdoc/* 5, the single react/react-compiler 4, vue/* 2, quotes 2. oxlint 1.87.0 refuses the last two as well.
  • ESLint 9 uses the config of the working directory. bun lint uses each file's closest config, as ESLint 10 does.
  • Six differences are oxlint's: the ESLint plugin, or a reduced example, says what bun lint says.

With the newest plugins, 6 files are changed by bun fmt only. No crash, at most 11 s and 322 MB. All of these are on main too:

With an oxfmt config, ({ a?, b!: 1 }) in a .ts file was printed without ? and !. It's a syntax error now, as in oxfmt.
prettier-plugin-ember-template-tag and six more plugins that only add a language (liquid, blade, edgejs, sql-cst, terraform, twig) no longer stop the run. TanStack/table: 6,262 files
A tailwind.config.js with import and module.exports couldn't be loaded. Tailwind's own loader reads it now. mfts/papermark: 201 files
Markdown: a line of : below a line that's only an HTML tag, and a comment below - [ ] text, were joined with the line above. eslint/eslint, testing-library
oxfmt config: void (/** @type {T} */ (a).b()) lost its parentheses; f(<A>{}, <B>{ b }) didn't hug. sveltejs/kit, ueli
Flow: [k: string]: (A) => B lost its parentheses with arrowParens: "avoid"; ... before a union that starts with | was a syntax error; a crash with prettier-plugin-organize-imports ended the run. parcel

What still differs: 8 Prettier projects use a plugin that isn't included, so bun fmt stops (10,639 files). 75 projects are clean for the version of their tool that they pin and not for the newest; in 74 of them bun fmt lists the files that the newest lists. oxfmt 0.74.0 prints => ({ a } as T) where 0.72.0 and bun fmt print => ({ a }) as T. If Tailwind's config can't be loaded, oxfmt continues without sorting and bun fmt fails the files that have classes.

bun lint --verbose

note: 3 deprecated formatting rules did not run: comma-dangle, no-extra-semi, semi
  Use bun fmt instead.

It's the same text in every run, and nothing in the report depends on it. A run that failed printed it, and so did a run that passed with json, unix, github and the other formats for tools. Now only --verbose prints it, with the other notes in a run that passes: another version of a plugin or of TypeScript is installed, rules ran in JavaScript. verbose = true under [lint] in bunfig.toml does the same, and bun lint --doctor lists all of them.

Where bun check deliberately differs from tsc 7.1 Beta

  • Network paths are still read. 7.1 refuses every access to a path that starts with two separators (//server/share, \\server\share) or is in /??/, so it can't check a project on a network share or under \\wsl$ at all. bun check reports the new TS5116 where such a path is written in a tsconfig.json, on the command line or in /// <reference path>, and ignores the value as 7.1 does. A project on such a path is checked as before.

  • A program on which tsc 7.1 Beta doesn't finish: a class whose base type is a conditional type over the class's type parameter, reached through a recursive alias. bun check reports TS5114 in a fraction of a second.

  • An assignment that 7.1 Beta accepts by mistake. It finds that R doesn't depend on Theme. 7.0.2 and bun check report TS2322. Without the alias I, bun check accepts it too, as 7.1 does.

    interface V<P> { v?: Partial<P> }
    type I<P> = V<P>;
    type R<Theme, Extra = {}> = Record<"root", I<{ theme: Theme } & Extra & Record<string, unknown>>>;
    const r: R<string> = null! as R<number>;
  • The attributes of an ambient module are compared as written. Modules are resolved before there are types. That's exact for what the new grammar errors allow. Of what they report (TS1555, TS1556), a union of string literals and a global alias of one are understood. string, any and an optional attribute aren't.

  • Suggestions. tsc computes "is deprecated" (TS6385) for editors and never prints it. bun check doesn't compute it. The one test of TypeScript that captures it, deprecatedReferenceInEnumComputedNameNoFlake, is skipped.

  • Unknown flags on the command line. bun check has its own messages for them and doesn't print 7.1's new spelling suggestions. In tsconfig.json it does.

  • Generated specifiers. With two levels of package.json inside a package, or one on a path through a symbolic link, bun check prints the longer import("pkg/a/b/m") where tsc prints import("pkg/a"). Both resolve to the same file.

  • Content mappers: standard error, response files and the wording of JSON errors, see above. tsc sends the requests for all files together, bun check as many as it has threads that load files.

Known issues

  • In Bun, not in the linter, a lookup of a package that isn't found doesn't free all of its memory. It's on main too. eslint-plugin-import-x without eslint-import-resolver-node makes up to five such lookups for each import that it can't resolve: 3.4 GB for 227 files of a project without its dependencies, about 38 MB in vite with them.

  • In mohebifar/tooscut, 8 TS18046 are missing. 7.1 Beta stops an inference there that 7.0 and 5.9 make, and they find no error in the project.

  • In vuejs/core, 2 TS7006 that follow a TS5115 are missing: what's kept after a limit differs from tsc.

  • A limit (TS2589, TS5114, TS5115, TS2590, TS2859, a comparison over 100 levels deep) in a type that many files reach is slow on few threads: each file's task does the work up to there and is discarded. 201 generated files that import one such type need 28.8 s at 1 thread, tsc 4.9 s.

  • In one file of monkeytypegame/monkeytype, TS2589 is reported at a JSX tag where tsc reports it at an attribute, so a @ts-expect-error doesn't cover it: two false errors.

  • In the style of MUI's theme, Rules<A> isn't assignable to Rules<B>, with B extends A, if Rules is recursive and its type parameter is in an intersection with Record<string, unknown>: TS2322, which 7.1 doesn't report. On main too.

  • Constants, functions and getters without annotations that refer to each other in a cycle through generic calls: which of them are any, and what's reported inside the cycle, can differ from tsc. About 2,500 newly generated programs in the shape of tRPC, zod, router, React and ORM applications, each with errors on purpose and many such cycles, under two sets of compiler options, are 4,986 cases. In 3 of them main prints tsc 7.1 Beta's errors and this branch doesn't, in 1,960 this branch does and main doesn't, in 409 neither does, in 2,614 both do. On 4 threads: 3, 1,962, 411 and 2,610.

  • With an import cycle, if an earlier file is the first to ask for the return type of a function with nested loops, a TS2339 on never in an arrow function that it returns is missing on 1 and 2 threads, and in 7 of 60 runs on 8. On main, in every run.

  • With --watch or --hot, a change to a file that a mapper with dynamicConfig lists in watchedFiles doesn't start a new check.

  • A try block with k statements, followed by n statements that refer to a variable, costs n * k * k steps, in tsc too. On main too.

  • On two or more threads, an error that tsc has in no file order. Since bun check: fix errors lost since #45800, and 9 to 37% faster #46001, not fixed here. S<N> and T<N> never end, so a comparison is cut off a few levels down and counts as true. a.ts is cut off before the level where the two differ, and b.ts sees the difference. Of 300 runs, 0, 151 and 75 at 1, 2 and 8 threads print what tsc 7.1 has in neither file order, with one, two or four checkers.

    // t.d.ts
    export interface S<N extends 0[]> { next: S<[...N, 0]>; v: N["length"] extends 6 ? "bad" : "ok" }
    export interface T<N extends 0[]> { next: T<[...N, 0]>; v: "ok" }
    export type Q<X, Y> = [X extends Y ? 1 : 2];
    export type N2 = [0, 0]; export type N4 = [0, 0, 0, 0];
    // a.ts
    declare const s2: S<N2>;
    export const t2: T<N2> = s2;
    export const q: Q<S<N4>, T<N4>> = [1];
    // b.ts
    declare const s4: S<N4>;
    export const q: Q<S<N4>, T<N4>> = [1];
    export const t4: T<N4> = s4;
    // z0.ts, z1.ts: 1,500 plain lines each
  • bun check: TS2589 on a typed $fetch call (nitropack route types) at ~60% of the instantiations at which tsc 7.0.2 reports it #45691: with hundreds of routes in nitropack's typed $fetch, tsc reports TS2589 from 208 routes on and bun check from about 300. Not new here.

  • Two generated programs for which tsc prints more than 150 MB of elaboration under one error end bun check with a stack overflow or a failed allocation. Not new here.

  • Four shapes of types that recurse up to a limit give another type or lose a TS2589 after the limit. One isn't new here.

  • 7.1 is a beta. What changes until the release has to be followed again.

Code

321 files, 41,668 lines added, 14,139 removed. Of that src/: 246 files, 19,498 and 7,892, with src/sema 14,703 and 5,846, src/lint 3,706 and 1,917.

Gone because 7.1 no longer does it: 1,674 lines, for 1,025 new ones.

There's no switch between the versions: bun check has one behavior.

How did you verify your code works?

  • bun check: each fix under "Fixes" has a test with tsc 7.1 Beta's text that fails without the fix. After each one, the output for the five projects at 1 and 8 threads and for the 2,430 stored programs was compared with the build before it: no line differs.
  • bun fmt: before each batch of fixes all 323 projects were formatted again: only the files listed above changed.
  • ws-proxy.test.ts failed on some Windows machines, on every branch: its Node.js origin could ask to renegotiate before its message was sent. Fixed in the helper.
  • bun lint: each fix has a test whose expected reports were recorded from the real linter in the version given above, and which fails without the fix.
  • TypeScript's own tests come from the tag v7.1-beta of microsoft/TypeScript. All 13,698 configurations pass: errors, printed types and symbols of each, 13,627 sets of declaration files, 161 resolution traces and 28 content mapper baselines, each compared byte for byte.
  • The tests compare bun check with the package typescript@7.1.0-beta: the 2,430 stored programs in differential-cases.json, and the live comparisons in differential.test.ts.
  • The whole output for vscode (490 errors), MUI's docs (0), supabase's studio (10), t3code's server (6) and mikro-orm (43,678) against tsc 7.1 Beta: no line differs, apart from bun add -d where tsc says npm i --save-dev, and the last line.
  • Content mappers: the 127 projects above, and a mapper for 200 files that import each other, which dies after some requests in every fourth run: 300 seeds at 1, 2 and 8 threads. No run hung or crashed, and the output was the same for every number of threads.
  • Unused declarations: 3,900 generated programs of 2 to 9 files give tsc 7.1's errors on one thread, and the same on 2 and 8 threads. So do the five projects with noUnusedLocals and noUnusedParameters forced on (7,066 such errors).
  • Long lists of statements: 13,000 generated programs with narrowing, evolving arrays, loops, try, closures and labels print what the build before printed, and 154 around the limit of TS2563 print what tsc 7.1 prints.
  • 74 small programs, which cover most code blocks and bullets above, were run with tsc 7.0.2, tsc 7.1 Beta and this PR's build. bun check prints what 7.1 Beta prints for all but the deliberate differences.

  • oven-sh/bun#46371 — The PR changes generic-call inference and recursive resolution, but the supplied summaries do not establish that this getter case is fixed.
  • oven-sh/bun#46139 — The PR changes instantiation tracking and recursion limits, but the supplied summaries do not establish that large Prisma types are fixed.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 8c658

The remaining issues warrant owner awareness: some projects miss version advice, an indexed-access edge case may check incorrectly, and a formatter test may reject a successful run with benign warnings. No confirmed broad failure blocks merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR satisfies both active linked coding requirements. For [#46181], src/sema/check/symbols.rs processes every non-rest object-pattern property while it computes synthesized defaults, so string indexing of a {} default can report TS7053. The PR also includes differential coverage for the regression and @ts-expect-error behavior. For [#45922], src/sema/check/shape.rs preserves inherited required members and suitable intersection apparent types, which prevents the false TS2322 for spreading { flags?: {} } &amp; typeof globalThis. The reported differential and CLI coverage supports both fixes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within the stated TypeScript 7.1 parity scope. The checker, parser, libraries, content mappers, formatter, linter, CLI options, performance work, documentation, completions, and tests implement the PR objectives. The fixes for [#46181] and [#45922] directly implement the linked issue requirements. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description includes both required sections: “What does this PR do?” and “How did you verify your code works?”. It provides detailed objectives, scope, deliberate differences, known issues, and verification results.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the mapper teardown in src/runtime/cli/content_mapper_process.rs: Command::Stop in run_io_thread SIGKILLs every child and keeps ticking until all have reported exit before the allocations are freed, and a protocol violation in on_read_chunk or a closed pipe in on_reader_done/on_write_error routes through the same Child::kill path, so the normal-exit and malformed-response cases do not leave a mapper running.

Extended reasoning...

The change spans 175 files (+13,480/-5,042) across the type checker, parser, formatter, linter and a new subprocess-spawning JSON-RPC transport for TypeScript 7.1 content mappers, which runs project-chosen executables with the user's permissions behind the --runExternalCode flag. Seven confirmed findings are posted inline, including a consent heuristic in check_command.rs and an unkilled child on initialize timeout, so approval is not appropriate; this note only records the teardown and protocol-error paths I read and found to kill the child.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

🟡 Minor · Preserve the indexed-access undefined flag when normalizing the index. · shape.rs:935-943

src/sema/check/shape.rs:935-943
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the indexed-access undefined flag when normalizing the index.

When normalization changes index, the current branch rebuilds the access with empty flags. This can remove noUncheckedIndexedAccess behavior. Pass the stored flag to indexed_access_flagged.

Suggested fix

Beyond the inline finding, two other spots were examined and ruled out: the response-file loop guard in src/sema/driver/lib.rs (a file that includes itself is now skipped silently instead of reported as TS5083; tsc itself never reports anything there, so no diagnostic is lost), and is_uniform_union_type in src/sema/check/flow.rs treating a computed-enum TypeData::Enum part the same as its literal members (consistent with tsgo's enum-parent comparison, and the latest commit adds the enum-next-to-literal test).

Extended reasoning...

This run produced one inline finding (lib alias names marshalled to content mappers in src/sema/config.rs) and ruled out two further candidates, which this note records once for the PR; the rest of the 177-file checker and content-mapper change was already reviewed across the earlier pushed versions.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the sibling case in cache_provisionally (src/sema/check/mod.rs:3821-3826) where a loop condition queries the same sub-expression twice during one check and the second query hits checked_in_flow_loop even after the loop's flowLoopCache entry was filled: tsgo's getTypeOfExpression also stores the first result in flowTypeCache and returns it on the second query, so that path matches tsc and is not affected.

Extended reasoning...

The latest push (07faecd) changes how getTypeOfExpression results are reused while a flow loop is analyzed in src/sema/check/mod.rs; one confirmed finding about replaying rejected_at/note_limit on a fast hit is posted inline. The ruled-out case concerns the same new checked_in_flow_loop table but mirrors tsgo's own flowTypeCache behaviour.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/event_loop/MiniEventLoop.rs — nit: maintainers reading env_ptr get a SAFETY invariant that this diff makes false. The doc at src/event_loop/MiniEventLoop.rs:220-221 says the loader is "never freed", but the new owns_env path in Drop (lines 447-450) now destroys it when free_global tears down the mapper thread's loop. Fix: reword the invariant to say the loader lives until the owning loop is dropped (or until free_global on that thread), matching the updated GLOBAL comment at line 90.

    Why this was flagged

    The diff adds owns_env (src/event_loop/MiniEventLoop.rs:77) and frees the DotEnvLoader in impl Drop for MiniEventLoop at src/event_loop/MiniEventLoop.rs:447-450, which free_global (lines 175-186) reaches from run_io_thread in src/runtime/cli/content_mapper_process.rs:247. The env_ptr accessor's doc comment at src/event_loop/MiniEventLoop.rs:220-221 still states the SAFETY invariant "points to a thread-/process-lifetime loader set in init_global that outlives self (never freed)". After this change the loader allocated by init_global is freed, so a caller relying on the stated process-lifetime guarantee to hold a NonNull<DotEnvLoader> past the loop's teardown would be reading freed memory. No current caller on the mapper thread does so, so this is a documentation accuracy nit rather than a live defect; the base branch's comment was accurate because nothing freed the loader.

    Verification: Triggering condition: any thread that calls free_global after init_global allocated its own DotEnvLoader. The diff adds to impl Drop for MiniEventLoop (src/event_loop/MiniEventLoop.rs:447-450) a heap::destroy of the loader, but leaves the env_ptr doc at lines 220-221 unchanged: "outlives self (never freed)." That sentence is now false on the owns_env path.

`bun check` accepts `--define` only with `--aot` now, so `--define check` in BUN_OPTIONS ends the run before anything is checked. The test still asserts that nothing is started, and expects no output.

type-services.test.ts assumed that a file which a project and a project it references both include has the types of the referencing project. It has those of the referenced one. The fixture now says which of the two projects is strict, and two more tests cover `parserOptions.project`, which lists the project to use.
`hir::Module` has the attributes of `declare module "*.css" with { type: "css" }`. A test of `import_sites` that came with main builds such a node by hand.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/runtime/cli/check_command/declarations.rs — Users of bun build --dts --runExternalCode on a project with content mappers get TS18068 and a failed build, although they typed the flag. With --dts the build picks check_and_emit_declarations (build_command.rs:203-204, and js_bundle_completion_task.rs:1252-1254 for Bun.build({ dts: true, check: { runExternalCode: true } })), whose Provided at declarations.rs:61-64 has no content_mapper_transport, so config.rs:1406-1408 reports TS18068 and drops the mappers. Fix: build the transport in check_and_emit_declarations from command_runs_external_code() or the build's kill switch, as check_for_build_command does.

    Why this was flagged

    A project whose tsconfig.json lists contentMappers is built with bun build --dts --runExternalCode src/App.ts --outdir out, or with Bun.build({ entrypoints, dts: true, check: { runExternalCode: true } }). In src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs:203-204 ctx.bundler_options.dts selects check_and_emit_declarations before --check is considered; src/runtime/api/js_bundle_completion_task.rs:1252-1254 likewise replaces config.check with check_types_and_emit_declarations when config.dts is set. check_and_emit_declarations builds Provided { already_read, ..Default::default() } at src/runtime/cli/check_command/declarations.rs:61-64, so Disk::content_mapper_processes stays None (src/sema/driver/lib.rs:1827). content_mappers in src/sema/config.rs:1406-1408 then pushes TS18068 and returns no mappers, so the build fails, while bun build --check --runExternalCode without --dts runs the mappers via check_for_build_command (check_command.rs:737-743). On the base branch neither flag nor mappers existed.

    Verification: src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs:203-209: --dts wins over --check, so --dts --runExternalCode always takes check_and_emit_declarations. src/runtime/cli/check_command/declarations.rs:61-64: Provided { already_read: ..., ..Default::default() } has no content_mapper_transport. src/sema/config.rs:1402-1409: with host.content_mapper_processes().is_none(), it pushes Problem::new(18068, ...) and returns no mappers.

Comment thread src/aot/modules/requests.rs
…o end

Before it begins a query, the checker tests if the same query is already in progress. A table of 1,024 counters, one per class of hash values, answers "no" for most queries without a look at the stack. With thousands of queries in progress no counter is zero, so every new query compared itself with all of them.

The table now has the position of the innermost query of each class, and each frame has the position of the next one of its class further down. A search follows that list: about 15 frames of 15,000. Beginning and ending a query cost what they did before.

`f ? f ? .. 1 .. : 0 : 0`, 8 threads:

| nested conditions | before | now |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | 0.24 s | 0.13 s |
| 10,000 | 0.70 s | 0.14 s |
| 15,000 | 1.31 s | 0.15 s |
| 20,000 | 2.45 s | 0.44 s |

The output is the same. The test "finishes within 10 s on conditions nested deeper than the stack allows" took over 10 s on two Linux x64 machines of CI.
The checker parses source phase imports since TypeScript 7.1. `bun run` doesn't: it reads `source` as the name of the default import and expects `from` next. A build with `--aot` compiled the statement like a deferred import. Now it reports TS1005 where `bun run` reports its syntax error. `import.source(..)` already was an error.
- `lib.es2026.json.d.ts` gives `JSON.parse` a second overload, whose reviver has a `context` parameter. The program standard-functions-keep-their-declared-types writes its revivers for both. tsc 7.1 reports the same three errors in the old text.
- tsc 7.1 starts the imports of a file again when it reaches the file at a lower depth, so with `maxNodeModuleJsDepth: 2` it lists `leaf/index.js` in numbering.test.ts.
- tsc 7.1 accepts a back reference to a group named `A` and, with the `v` flag, a single ampersand in a class. Both are valid. The case of checker-queries now expects that they don't stop a build.
- `--runExternalCode` is in the list of options that need the Bun command line, beside `--check`.

The search follows the list of the query's class, which is empty if no query of the class is in progress. The test in front of it repeated that.

With AddressSanitizer a test file may run for 360 s. This one needed 314 s before main was merged, and ran into the limit in all four attempts afterwards. All of its tests already run concurrently.

js-plugin-api.test.ts has the tests about type information and the groups about `context.report()`, trees, scopes, tokens, code paths, threads and oxlint configs: 58 % of the time. No test is changed, and all 222 have the names they had. js-plugins.ts has the five helpers that both files use. The entry in expected-durations.json is divided in the same proportion.

With `noUnusedLocals`, a build reported TS6196 or TS6133 for a type alias, an interface, an enum, a namespace, a type-only import, a `private` field or a `#field` whose only use is after a `return` or behind `process.platform === "win32"`. tsc doesn't, and neither does `bun check` without `--aot`.

A type reference and a property access mark what they resolve to where the checker resolves them, and the checker skips the statements that a build removes. Before it looks for unused names, a build now resolves the type references and the property accesses in that code. What they report there is dropped with the other diagnostics of removed code.

The program declarations/names-used-only-in-removed-code covers it.
tsc 7.1 reports the same errors, at the same places, in the old text of each.

- The second overload of `JSON.parse`: revivers have the `context` parameter, and `.call` and `.bind` name the overload they mean. Four programs, and one row of generated/escaping-objects.ts.
- bun-types declares `"*"` with `{ type: "text" }` for 7.1, which wins over a plain `"*.number"`. The program about a text file declared as something else gives its two declarations the same attribute.
- TS7059: a `.mts` file can't have a type assertion in angle brackets. The generators of programs for stack positions write `as number` there. Only `.mts` texts change.

`const { a } = this` and `({ a } = this)` mark `a` like `this.a` does. A build now also resolves the binding elements and the assignments in the code it removes, so with `noUnusedLocals` it no longer reports TS6133 for a `private` field whose only use is one of these.

The program declarations/names-used-only-in-removed-code has both.
`is_dir`, `is_file` and `package` of the resolver no longer normalized their path, because TypeScript 7.1 normalizes every candidate before it looks it up. The resolver of run-time imports calls the same three with paths like `/p/src/../node_modules`. A file system follows those. The file system of the unit tests compares paths, so eight tests about computed specifiers that begin with a package name found nothing.

The three normalize again, after the look in their cache. For a path that's already normalized it's one pass over its bytes, and only before a system call.

One unit test of the compiler also follows TypeScript 7.1: its reviver is passed to `JSON.parse` only if there is one, as in the program typeof-json-parse-types-the-parameters.

With `noUnusedLocals`, a build reported TS6133 for a `#field` whose only use is `#field in o` after a `return`. A build now resolves that name too, which makes five: these are all the places where the checker marks a member as used.

The programs declarations/names-used-only-in-removed-code and modules/a-source-phase-import run for every commit.

Commit a178f08 on this branch also fixes a test that is red on main.

  • What is red: test/cli/check/check.test.ts, case finishes within 10 s on conditions nested deeper than the stack allows. The child ends with bun check exited with 137. It fails every attempt on darwin x64 host rye (builds 134075, 134132, 134152, 134222). It fails the first attempt on linux x64 in 134177, 134222, 134239 and 134240.
  • Since: Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631. begin_stack_budget gives a worker 24 MB, where it gave 3 MB. The 15,000 conditions no longer run out of stack, so every query searches 15,000 frames.
  • The commit alone, on main: robobun/26c9011d/check-deep-query-stack, 2 files, +29 -18, in case it should land before this PR. Two hunks (enter, position_in_progress) are written for the code on main. A merge of it into this branch conflicts in three hunks, and this branch's side is right in each.
  • The block itself: no row of it runs out of stack on a worker now. On linux x64 the parser refuses each of the ten shapes before the checker needs 24 MB (20,000 conditions use 20,316 KB, and 21,000 are refused).

bun check --timing on the fixture of that case, release builds, linux x64, median of 9 runs:

build check stack at the most
a0cc096, before #45631 211 ms, runs out of stack 3,072 KB
11c3671, main 1,066 ms 15,238 KB
main with the commit (local build) 97 ms 15,707 KB

The whole file with the commit takes 41 to 46 s in 3 runs, and the case takes 0.3 to 2.6 s. Main's canary build takes 74 s and 123 s. There the case takes 9.6 s in one run and fails at 12.7 s in the other. The results are equal otherwise: 842 pass, and one case fails in both because my checkout lacks @elysia/eden. The other 12 files of test/cli/check give the same counts with both builds.

I did not open a PR for the branch, because the fix belongs to this PR. Say so here if a separate PR helps.

`ExprKind::tag` was the number of the variant, which is one load. Since `JsxText` has the tag of `String` it isn't, and the two loops of `ExprsByKind::new`, which count by the tag, compiled to a jump per node.

A first loop now stores the tags as bytes, which compiles to a table lookup, and the two loops read the bytes.

Share of the function in `bun check` of vscode, 8 threads: 0.55 % before, 0.20 % now.
