Do not merge before oven-sh/WebKit#864 lands. The pin then moves to the merged commit.

Problem

  • Since Bun 1.4.0 one RegExp gives two answers. /(?:a|b*)+?c(?<!(?<=(?<=x{2147483647})y{2147483647})z{2147483647})/ answers test("ac") with true. After test("c") the same call throws SyntaxError: Invalid regular expression: pattern exceeds string length limits, and so does new RegExp of that text.
  • Cause: JavaScriptCore refuses the whole pattern when a checked 32-bit input offset overflows. In node /c|a{4294967295}b/.exec("c") is ["c"].
  • A fuzz probe found this, no user did.

Fix

Background

Downsides

  • Behaviour change: these patterns were SyntaxErrors. Code that relied on the throw now gets a RegExp that never matches on that path.
  • +4.6 instructions (+0.13%) per byte compile of an ordinary pattern, measured in the engine PR.
  • Still unlike node: a minimum of 2^64 - 1 or more is refused, and an abandoned search reports no match.
Notes

What changes in Bun

1.4.3 and main this PR node v26.3.0
the RegExp of the first Problem bullet: test("ac"), test("c"), test("ac") true, SyntaxError, SyntaxError true, true, true true, true, true

/(?:z)?x{4294967295}/.test("") SyntaxError at the match false false
/(?<!a{4294967295})b/.test("b") SyntaxError at the match true true

Tests

  • test/js/bun/jsc-stress/fixtures/regexp-required-input-beyond-string-length.js is the engine PR's JSTests/stress file without its three run directives. That file also runs in the jsc shell, which has no Buffer. It has a table of patterns (each as written and with a prefix over 64 characters, which makes creation lazy, and each also in a RegExp whose first call is test()), one RegExp that runs in JIT code and then in the interpreter, sticky and 16-bit subjects, the String methods, literals in hot loops, and compile().
  • test/js/web/urlpattern/urlpattern.test.ts: four groups of this kind, each in two patterns. The second pattern gets the RegExp that ran the first one's match.
  • test/js/web/structured-clone-fastpath.test.ts: the RegExp of the first Problem bullet after both calls, cloned inside an object.
  • The places where Bun builds a YarrPattern and byte-compiles it itself (src/jsc/bindings/RegularExpression.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/JSBundlerPlugin.h), each with a pattern the pattern build refused and one the byte compiler refused:
    • test/cli/test/test-filter-lifecycle-snapshot.test.ts: bun test -t. The other -t tests are in bun-test.test.ts. In a local debug build two unrelated tests of that file exceed their 5 second limit, on main as well, so the new test is in the other file that covers -t.
    • test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts: the filter of an onLoad plugin.
    • test/cli/lint/oracle/robustness/cases.ts, run by robustness.test.ts: the pattern option of id-match, which bun_yarr compiles.
  • Runs with the debug build of this branch (process.versions.webkit is preview-pr-864-c9cdf235): the six test files in one run, 753 pass. With the debug build of main (5e3554face): the 12 new tests fail.

Walkthrough

The PR selects a WebKit preview build and adds regression tests for regular-expression paths that require more input than a string can hold. Coverage includes JSC, web APIs, bundler filters, lint patterns, and CLI test filters.

Changes

Regex oversized-input behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
WebKit build and JSC stress coverage
scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts, test/js/bun/jsc-stress/fixtures/regexp-required-input-beyond-string-length.js, test/js/bun/jsc-stress/jsc-stress.test.ts
The selected WebKit build changes. The JSC stress suite adds and registers coverage for oversized paths across pattern forms, matching modes, execution states, subjects, and regular-expression APIs.
Structured clone and URLPattern regressions
test/js/web/structured-clone-fastpath.test.ts, test/js/web/urlpattern/urlpattern.test.ts
Tests cover cloning a RegExp after JIT-to-interpreter execution and URLPattern matching with oversized quantifier paths.
Bundler, lint, and CLI filter regressions
test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts, test/cli/lint/oracle/robustness/cases.ts, test/cli/test/test-filter-lifecycle-snapshot.test.ts
Tests cover unmatchable alternatives in bundler filters and lint patterns. CLI lifecycle tests cover valid test-name patterns with extremely large quantifiers.

Explanation

The changed files support issue #864. The WebKit pin supplies the engine fix. The stress, URLPattern, structured-clone, bundler, lint, and CLI tests cover the affected RegExp paths and Bun integrations. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and well-structured. It has the required sections 'What does this PR do?' (covered by Problem, Fix, Background, and Downsides) and 'How did you verify your code works?' (covered by the Verified line, the Tests section in the notes, and the debug-build runs with pass/fail counts). It explains the root cause, the engine fix (oven-sh/WebKit#864), the pin change, the new tests, the behaviour change, and the cost. The bot evidence block flags that test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts could not run locally and defers to CI, which is a minor gap. Note that the description's '12 new tests in six files' framing does not fully align with the objectives' list of six failing tests, but the description itself is internally consistent.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The tests and WebKit preview pin cover issue #864 behavior. The required final dependency state is not present. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts still pins autobuild-preview-pr-864-fc3e289f, while #864 remains open. The PR states that merge must wait for the issue to land and then move the pin to the merged commit.

Resolution

After oven-sh/WebKit#864 lands, replace the preview pin with its merged commit and rerun the affected tests.

Do not merge until WebKit#864 lands.

After oven-sh/WebKit#864 lands, replace WEBKIT_VERSION with the immutable pin for its merged commit before merging this PR. Preview-tag lint and download support do not override this PR-specific pre-merge condition.

Yes. The first line of the PR description says the same. The pin moves to the merge commit of oven-sh/WebKit#864 when that PR lands, and this PR must not merge before that. This thread stays open until then.

@robobun Understood. This thread stays open until oven-sh/WebKit#864 lands and WEBKIT_VERSION points to its immutable merged commit. This PR must not merge before both conditions are met.

🔴 If merged with this pin, every prebuilt-WebKit build (CI and bun bd) fails with a 404 as soon as oven-sh/WebKit#864 merges or closes. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 pins WEBKIT_VERSION to the preview tag "autobuild-preview-pr-864-cfa7f07f", and scripts/build/download.ts:320 documents that GitHub deletes that release when the PR merges or closes. Fix: before merge, replace the pin with the merged main commit's 40-hex sha (an autobuild-<sha> release that stays published), as the PR description says it will; nothing in the repo blocks a preview tag from landing on main. The description calls this intended, but no lint or CI check enforces it.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: this PR lands with scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 still reading "autobuild-preview-pr-864-cfa7f07f", and then oven-sh/WebKit#864 merges or closes. prebuiltUrl at scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:81-82 builds https://github.com/oven-sh/WebKit/releases/download/autobuild-preview-pr-864-cfa7f07f/.tar.gz. scripts/build/download.ts:319-322 states the preview release is deleted at that point, so the fetch 404s and prebuiltDownloadError at download.ts:328-337 raises "WebKit preview release is gone". Every CI lane and every local bun bd on main stops building until someone re-pins; on the base branch the pin is the 40-hex sha d0b16ad0ce2bac652f0f63cdcc642a7d3ba69631, whose release stays up. test/internal/source-lints/webkit-prebuilt-url.test.ts:126-127 accepts any autobuild-* tag, so no automated check rejects the preview pin on main; the only safeguard is the PR text's promise to move the pin before merge.

Verification: The PR description says the pin moves to the merged commit, which is a plan, not something the code as it stands enforces. Trigger: the branch merges with scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 still reading the preview tag and oven-sh/WebKit#864 then merges or closes. scripts/build/download.ts:319-322 states that release is deleted at that point, so every prebuilt-mode build 404s.

…s, the pattern is valid

The jsc-stress fixture is JSTests/stress/regexp-required-input-beyond-string-length.js
of oven-sh/WebKit#864 without its run directives.

The URLPattern and structuredClone cases are places where Bun passed the
RegExp's SyntaxError on. The bun test -t, Bun.build plugin filter and
bun lint id-match cases are places where Bun compiles a pattern with Yarr
itself, with no RegExp object.
autobuild-preview-pr-864-c9cdf235: a RegExp path that needs more input
than a string can hold fails its match, and the pattern stays valid.

Beyond the inline nit, I checked the three new tests for Bun's own Yarr entry points (bun test -t in test-filter-lifecycle-snapshot.test.ts, the onLoad filter cases in bundler_plugin.test.ts, and the id-match cases in test/cli/lint/oracle/robustness/cases.ts): each matches the existing harness shape (loadFixture/foo.magic, the reports count form, and test.concurrent.each draining stdout/stderr/exited together), so they do cover the sibling paths through RegularExpression.cpp and JSBundlerPlugin.h that were missing before.

Extended reasoning...

The two new commits add the bundler, lint and -t tests that were requested earlier and switch the -t cases to test.concurrent.each with Promise.all; the only non-test change remains the WEBKIT_VERSION pin in scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts, which still points at the preview tag autobuild-preview-pr-864-c9cdf235 and so cannot land as-is, as the PR itself states. No security-sensitive surface is touched; the change is a WebKit bump plus tests.
