Problem

  • A listening tls.Server with a user SNICallback serves an addContext() entry for a name that the callback declines. Node serves the default context. The entry's client CA applies too, so Bun refuses clients that Node accepts.
  • Cause: us_select_cert_cb (packages/bun-usockets/src/crypto/openssl.c) looks the name up in the listener's SNI tree after the resolver returned no context.

Fix

  • Delete both lookups: for an answer in the call and for a resumed answer. A resolver that returns nothing keeps the default context.
  • Correct because Node gives a server one selector, this[kSNICallback] || SNICallback (wrap.js#L1270). Only the default one reads the entries.
  • Verified: 22 tests in test/js/node/tls/ fail on main: the new node-tls-sni-callback-replaces-addcontext.test.ts (Node runs it too), node-tls-server.test.ts, node-tls-context.test.ts. Also 9 vendored Node SNI tests.
  • Self-reviewed: 16 concerns raised, 13 addressed. Notes name the other 3.

Background

  • BoringSSL calls us_select_cert_cb after it parsed the ClientHello. Bun runs the listener's resolver there: the user SNICallback.
  • addContext() fills a listener's SNI tree. A listener with no resolver reads it in sni_cb, unchanged here.
  • Considered instead: not loading a callback server's entries, and a "declined" answer code. Both keep the lookup.

Downsides

  • Breaking: a Bun program that relies on an entry behind a declining callback gets the default certificate and client CA. 9 tests pinned that (Notes).
  • us_select_cert_cb executes 1 more instruction when a resolver selects a context in the call (168 to 169). Other paths are equal or shorter.
  • Still unlike Node: false, 0 or "" as the answer resets the connection. node:tls: ask for the server name on the stream TLS engine #45471 changes that.
Notes

No maintainer has ruled on this yet. No user reported it. The question is in the first comment. Merge should wait for the answer.

Repro. Run from the repository root, with node and with bun.

const tls = require("node:tls");
const fs = require("node:fs");
const pem = name => fs.readFileSync(`test/js/node/tls/fixtures/${name}.pem`, "utf8");
const agent = n => ({ key: pem(`agent${n}-key`), cert: pem(`agent${n}-cert`) });

async function served(answer) {
  const server = tls.createServer({ ...agent(2), SNICallback: (name, cb) => answer(cb) }, s => s.end());
  server.addContext("entry.test", agent(3));
  await new Promise(r => server.listen(0, "127.0.0.1", r));

    later: await served(cb => setImmediate(cb, null, null)),
  });
})();
Runtime inTheCall later
Node v26.3.0 agent2 agent2
Bun 1.4.2 agent3 agent3
This PR (debug build) agent2 agent2

Node documents the rule (tls.md): "If callback is called with a falsy ctx argument, the default secure context of the server will be used. If SNICallback wasn't provided the default callback with high-level API will be used". The code is tlsConnectionListener (L1270), the default SNICallback (L1599-L1611) and loadSNI (L207-L235).

Behaviour change. For a name that the SNICallback of a listening server declines:

Before After, and Node
Certificate the addContext() entry the default
A client of the default context's CA refused accepted
A client of the entry's CA accepted refused

A program that wants the entry returns it from the callback: cb(null, ctx). That form gives the same result on Node, on Bun before this PR and on Bun after it. A server with addContext() entries and no SNICallback does not change.

Where the lookup comes from.

Tests: 9 reversed, 1 deleted, 13 new.

Not changed here. Each row differs from Node before and after this PR, except row 3.

  1. An answer that is not undefined or null (false, 0, "", NaN, a string, a number, true) still resets the connection with "Invalid SNI context" (consumeSNIResult, src/js/node/net.ts:1106). Node keeps the default context. node:tls: ask for the server name on the stream TLS engine #45471 changes that function.
  2. A second answer is ignored (net.ts:1135). Node destroys the socket with ERR_MULTIPLE_CALLBACK.
  3. server._SNICallback assigned after construction and before listen(), with a callback that declines: Node ignores the assignment and serves the entry. main serves the entry after 1 call. This PR serves the default after 1 call. This row moves away from Node.
  4. A server with an SNICallback still loads its addContext() entries into the listener's tree. After this PR no handshake reads them.
  5. Such a server still acknowledges server_name: 20 of 20 handshakes on main and on this PR, 0 of 20 on Node v26.3.0 (openssl s_client -tlsextdebug, TLS 1.2 and 1.3).

Order against other open PRs.

Consumers of the changed function. us_select_cert_cb runs for every SSL of a context that registered it.

  • A Bun.listen listener with a serverName handler (Listener.rs:648). Only node:tls passes that handler, and only for a server with a user SNICallback (serverHandlersFor, net.ts:1849). Only node:tls can also fill the tree.
  • A socket adopted into TLS with its own SNICallback. It has no tree.
  • uWS onMissingServerName (packages/bun-uws/src/App.h:290). missingServerName() has no caller. It returns the tree's context itself.
  • An SSL with no resolver returns before the deleted code, as before.

Measurements. Linux x64, main against this PR.

  • us_select_cert_cb: 1111 -> 852 bytes, 279 -> 219 instructions, sni_find references 1 -> 0. sni_cb, us_socket_sni_resolve, us_listen_socket_add_server_name, us_ssl_apply_selected_ctx, us_listen_socket_on_server_name and us_listen_socket_find_server_name_ctx: 0 differing instructions. .text of the object 26206 -> 25947 bytes (clang 23 -O3, the release flags with LTO off, main 71bc818).
  • Executed instructions in us_select_cert_cb per ClientHello (gdb stepi count over a harness that includes openssl.c, same flags, two equal runs): no resolver 59 -> 59. Resolver selects in the call 168 -> 169 (calls 14 -> 14, conditional branches 23 -> 23). Resolver pending 142 -> 142. Resumed with a context 79 -> 79. Nothing in the call 146 -> 141 with no tree and 173 -> 141 with an entry. Resumed nothing 109 -> 65 with no tree and 136 -> 65 with an entry.
  • Per declined handshake on a debug build (gdb breakpoint counts, main ea6a2c7): us_server_names_find calls from us_select_cert_cb 1 -> 0 in the call and 1 -> 0 resumed. us_client_hello_servername calls 1 -> 1 and 2 -> 1.
  • Release binary (bun run build:release, base ea6a2c7): .text of bun 107094269 -> 107094013 bytes (size). us_select_cert_cb in bun-profile 1106 -> 832 bytes.
  • A callback server with 3 entries over listen, close, listen and 10 handshakes: us_listen_socket_add_server_name calls 6 -> 6, sni_cb calls per handshake 1 -> 1 (gdb counts).
  • Resolver registrars: Listener.rs:648, App.h:176, App.h:750. Callers of missingServerName(): 0. us_server_names_find call sites 4 -> 2.
  • Not in the container: bloaty, perf, valgrind, strace.

Suites run on a debug build of this head.

  • The three files above: 307 pass, 8 fail, 1 todo. The 8 are tests that this PR does not touch: six of "an ALPNCallback over a Duplex can drop its connection" and "tls.DEFAULT_CIPHERS reaches a client whatever its other TLS options are" exceed the 5 s timeout of a debug build here and pass with a longer one, and "reports the reset that arrives while the socket is paused" passes alone. On main's src/ the same run has 26 failures: the 22 of this PR and 4 of those timeouts.
  • Vendored Node tests, 9 of 9 pass: test-tls-add-context, test-tls-sni-server-client, test-tls-secure-context-usage-order, test-tls-multiple-cas-as-string, test-tls-sni-option, test-tls-sni-servername, test-tls-snicallback-error, test-tls-empty-sni-context, test-https-agent-sni.
  • test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts, tcp-server.test.ts, tls-fatal-error-closes.test.ts, tls-reject-before-client-cert.test.ts, test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-ssl.test.ts, test/regression/issue/21792.test.ts, 27358.test.ts, test/js/node/tls/renegotiation.test.ts: 472 pass, 17 skip, 3 fail. The 3 also fail on main's build here: two 5 s timeouts in bun-serve-ssl.test.ts and one test that needs www.example.com.
  • Not run: Windows. The path row of the new file uses a named pipe there.

Self-review: the 3 concerns not taken as written.

…istening server

us_select_cert_cb no longer looks the name up in the listener's SNI tree
after a resolver returned no context, for an answer in the call and for an
answer resumed through us_socket_sni_resolve. A name that the callback
declines keeps the default context of the server, as in Node.

@Jarred-Sumner @cirospaciari Two questions before this merges.

  1. Was the addContext() fallback on listen() a decision? net,tls: port Node.js net/tls compatibility tests and fix the gaps they surface — half-open/reset/write semantics, server TLSSocket wrap, session/keylog, SNICallback/ALPNCallback, pfx, OpenSSL error shapes, addCACert, local binding (+305 tests) #31155 added the lookup with a test for it. tls: consolidate the open TLS fixes (both engines, node:tls, node:https, WebSocket, SQL) #44618 added three listen() tests with the comment "Bun only: in Node a user SNICallback replaces the addContext() entries". This PR reverses those tests to the result of Node. If the fallback was a decision, I will close this PR.

  2. Should this PR also stop loading the entries? After this change no handshake reads the addContext() entries of a server that has an SNICallback, but addContext() still loads them into the SNI tree of the listener. Their one effect is that the server acknowledges server_name (20 of 20 handshakes, Node 0 of 20). To skip the load for a listener that registered the resolver at listen() stops that acknowledgement on those servers. I left it out because no test here can see it.

Status: reproduced, fix is in this PR (#46296).

How I reproduced it: the script under "Repro" in the Notes of the description. It starts a tls.Server that has an SNICallback and an addContext() entry for entry.test. The callback selects nothing. A client then asks for entry.test.

  • Node v26.3.0 serves agent2, the default certificate, for an answer in the call and for a later answer.
  • Bun 1.4.2 serves agent3, the addContext() entry, for both.
  • A debug build of this PR serves agent2 for both.

On a debug build of main (71bc818) the 22 tests of this PR fail. On this head they pass.

Walkthrough

A configured SNI resolver now selects the TLS context without falling back to registered static SNI entries when it returns no context. The default context remains in use. Documentation and tests cover this behavior across callbacks, client-CA selection, ALPN, server lifecycle, and transport paths.

Consolidate the SNI coverage into the existing TLS test files.

test/AGENTS.md prohibits a new TLS test file here, and node-tls-server.test.ts already owns related tls.Server, SNICallback, and addContext() coverage. Preserve the Node-runnable compatibility coverage when consolidating: node-tls-server.test.ts imports harness and node-harness at module scope, so the new Node-based tests cannot move there unchanged.

The current typeof Bun guard already keeps Bun.spawn and the harness import out of Node execution. A separate subprocess file is not required solely for runtime separation. This is an essential but localized test refactor, not a major or high-effort issue.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the two deleted tree-fallback blocks in us_select_cert_cb: SSL_CTX refcounts stay balanced (apply + SSL_CTX_free on both dyn and resolved_ctx), names is still read for the resolver dispatch so nothing is left dead, and a listener without a resolver still reaches the tree through sni_cb, which is unchanged. The behavior change itself is a deliberate Node-compat break that the description says is still awaiting a maintainer ruling, so that decision stays with a human.

Extended reasoning...

The diff removes the static SNI-tree fallback from us_select_cert_cb in packages/bun-usockets/src/crypto/openssl.c (both the resumed-answer and in-call paths), updates comments in libusockets.h and src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs, flips nine test expectations, deletes one test with a named replacement, and adds a node:test compat file. It touches TLS certificate and client-CA selection, a security-relevant surface, but the C change is a pure deletion with refcounts and variable use verified balanced. One inline finding (the Windows named-pipe row cannot fail) is posted, and the PR author states no maintainer has approved the breaking behavior change, so a human decision is still required.

🟡 (optional) On Windows the "listens on a path" row cannot fail, so the named-pipe coverage the PR describes does not exist. A named-pipe TLS listener never runs the SNICallback (Listener.rs:348 TODO) and addServerName is a no-op for it (Listener.rs:810), so the default certificate is served on main too and the row only asserts "agent2". Fix: make the row prove the resolver ran, e.g. record asked and assert it equals ["entry.test"] like the forms at line 83, and skip the Windows named-pipe variant with a comment naming the Listener.rs:348 gap until SNI reaches named pipes. [also at: test/js/node/tls/node-tls-sni-callback-replaces-addcontext.test.ts:206 - nit: on Windows the "listens on a path" test passes on the base branch as well as on this head, so it does not prove the named-pipe form of the fix.; src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs:348 - On Windows a tls.Server with an SNICallback listening on a named pipe never calls the callback and serves the default certificate for every name, while the PR claims named-pipe coverage.]

Why this was flagged

The row at test/js/node/tls/node-tls-sni-callback-replaces-addcontext.test.ts:192-206 listens on \\.\pipe\tls-sni-callback-<pid> when process.platform === "win32" and asserts only that servedCN is "agent2". On Windows tls.Server.listen(path) takes the named-pipe branch in src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs:296-365, which never calls on_server_name (the TODO at Listener.rs:348 says server_name is not supported on named pipes), and Listener::add_server_name returns Ok(()) for a non-Uws listener at Listener.rs:810, so the addContext entry is dropped. Neither the resolver nor the SNI tree is consulted, so the default context is served on the base branch as well; deleting the openssl.c change leaves this row green on Windows. The POSIX branch does exercise us_listen_socket_on_server_name, so only the Windows variant is vacuous. No assertion in the row checks that the callback was invoked, unlike the forms at line 83 which assert asked.

Verification: In src/runtime/socket/Listener.rs the named-pipe branch returns at L429 without reaching the only on_server_name registration (L645-647); the TODO at L348-349 states "server_name is not supported on named pipes". Listener::add_server_name at L810-812 returns Ok(()) for a non-Uws listener, so addContext is a no-op. The certificate served is agent2 on main as well as on this head; the row at L201 asserts only that.
