A server-side build (--target=bun, --target=node, --compile) that imports an HTML file parses the HTML's scripts with the browser target, but every file linked against the single bun:runtime module at source index 0, which is the server variant. The client chunk got the server __require (import.meta.require, or a bare require with the CommonJS format that --bytecode forces), the server __using helpers, and the runtime parts that only the server side used. With --splitting the two sides shared the runtime chunk. The browser side now resolves bun:wrap to a second runtime module, the browser variant, added when the client transpiler is created (HTML imports) or when a bake production build starts. The linker picks the runtime by the file's target for wrappers, export helpers, and chunk prologues. The HTML manifest module is marked as a server-side module so it keeps the server runtime. The client transpiler uses the ESM output format, and the linker reads the format per file where it decides how an external import or a require() prints, so browser files keep import statements and __require even when the server format is CommonJS. Bake production no longer copies the server runtime chunk into the client output: the client chunks carry their own runtime.
WalkthroughThe bundler now creates a separate browser runtime for applicable server builds and selects runtime helpers and output formats by target. HTML-import client chunks use browser-target behavior, while server chunks retain their selected runtime. Tests cover target and format combinations, splitting, and bytecode output. src/bundler/linker_context/postProcessJSChunk.rs— Users of an IIFE server build with an HTML import now get a client chunk that is a SyntaxError in the browser instead of a build error. The browser side is linked as ESM (output_format_for_targetreturns Esm, LinkerContext.rs:440-446) and parsed with top-level await allowed, but postProcessJSChunk.rs:512-533 and 724-735 still wrap the whole chunk in(() => {...})();from the globalc.options.output_format. Fix: choose the chunk prologue/epilogue (and the Iife indent/comment branches at 603) from the per-chunk formatentry_output_formatalready computed at postProcessJSChunk.rs:141, or keep the client transpiler on Iife when the server format is Iife so parse and wrap agree. Why this was flagged
Trigger:
bun build --target=bun --format=iife ./server.ts(Arguments.rs:2542-2567 and JSBundler.rs:873-887 accept iife with a server target) where server.ts imports index.html whose<script type="module" src="./app.js">uses top-levelawaitor an externalimport. initialize_client_transpiler setsct.options.output_format = options::Format::Esm(bundle_v2.rs:2004), so ParseTask.rs:2539 enablestop_level_awaitfor app.js and the linker keeps externalimportstatements (LinkerContext.rs:2332-2337). post_process_js_chunk then readslet output_format = c.options.output_format(postProcessJSChunk.rs:391) and emits(() => {\nat 522-531 and})();at 725-734 around the browser chunk, which the browser rejects with a SyntaxError. On the base branch the client transpiler inherited Iife, so top-level await was a parse error that failed the build, and noimportstatement survived into the IIFE body.Verification:
src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:2004setsct.options.output_format = options::Format::Esm;for the client transpiler, sosrc/bundler/ParseTask.rs:2539setstop_level_await = true.src/bundler/linker_context/postProcessJSChunk.rs:512-533and:724-735wrap every chunk in the server's IIFE fromc.options.output_format. The client chunk is a SyntaxError and the build exits 0; on base TLA was a build-time error.

The two blocking points from the previous round are addressed in the new commits: bake production now enqueues the browser runtime after the user entries (enqueue_entry_points_bake_production, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3806), so the source_index - 3 entry-index math is unchanged, and chunk_gets_bytecode (src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:904-907) no longer compiles browser-side chunks.
Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the parser's new is_source_runtime (options.bundle && !allow_runtime): in the bundler path ParseTask sets features.allow_runtime = !task.is_runtime() unconditionally (src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:2534), and the allow_runtime = false sites in build_command.rs/options.rs only reach non-bundle transforms, so the predicate is equivalent to the old index-0 check for both runtimes.
Extended reasoning...
The PR threads a per-target bun:runtime through the parse graph and every linker pass, forces the client transpiler to ESM, and removes the bake production runtime copy; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One verified nit is posted inline and a further verified finding is unposted, so approval is not on the table; this body only records that the earlier blocking findings were fixed by the new commits and one new concrete concern (the parser runtime predicate) was ruled out.

src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs— nit: the SAFETY comment at src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:4834-4836 is no longer accurate. It saystranspiler_for_target"never touchesgraph.input_files", but after this change the lazy-init arm (bundle_v2.rs:257 ->initialize_client_transpiler->ensure_browser_runtime->enqueue_runtime, bundle_v2.rs:3820) appends tograph.input_filesand can reallocate thesourcescolumn slice held at bundle_v2.rs:4801. The call is still sound only because a browser-target file implies the client transpiler already exists. Fix: state that invariant in the SAFETY comment (or make the lazy init path unreachable here by readingclient_transpiler_ref()instead oftranspiler_for_target), so the comment matches what the function can now do.Why this was flagged
process_files_to_copy(src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:4771) holds raw column slices ofgraph.input_files(sourcesat bundle_v2.rs:4801) across a call totranspiler_for_target(target)at bundle_v2.rs:4839, justified by the SAFETY comment at bundle_v2.rs:4834-4836 that the callee never touchesgraph.input_files. On the base branch that was true. After this changetranspiler_for_target(Target::Browser)with no client transpiler callsinitialize_client_transpiler(bundle_v2.rs:257), which now callsensure_browser_runtime()(bundle_v2.rs:2061) andenqueue_runtime(bundle_v2.rs:3818-3845), which appends tograph.input_files(bundle_v2.rs:3820). In the current code no browser-target file exists without the client transpiler having been created first (HTML entries callensure_client_transpiler()at bundle_v2.rs:3622), so no user-visible failure occurs today; the SAFETY comment simply no longer states the actual reason theunsafeslices stay valid, which the repository's review rules require.Verification: nit. The SAFETY comment at src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:4834-4836 says
transpiler_for_targetnever touchesgraph.input_files, but after this PR its lazy arm (line 257) callsinitialize_client_transpiler, now callingensure_browser_runtime()(bundle_v2.rs:2061) andenqueue_runtime, which appends tograph.input_filesat line 3820. The code remains sound because the lazy arm cannot be reached from this loop.

post_process_js_chunksets browser entries toentry_output_format == Esm, but both the join check andgenerate_entry_point_tail_jsstill use the global CJS format. I re-reviewed the PR after the follow-up commits and found no new bugs; the earlier inline findings (bake entry-point index shift, bytecode generation for browser chunks, client transpiler format under the dev-server format) are addressed in the code now. Since this rewires runtime selection across most of the linker, a human look is still worthwhile before merge.
What was reviewed:
bake_entry_point_index(LinkerContext.rs:896) against both runtime slot positions (plugin-resolved entries land after the browser runtime; direct entries before it).chunk_gets_bytecodenow gated onchunk_side == Server, andoutput_format_for/runtime_refsselection per file target in scanImportsAndExports.rs and generateCompileResultForJSChunk.rs.- Ruled out:
ParseTask::is_runtimematching a plugin-suppliedbun:runtimenamespace (plugins cannot set that namespace in practice); the CommonJS-formatexportconversion for client entries in doStep5.rs is pre-existing and named as a follow-up in the description.
Extended reasoning...
The change spans 23 files (639 insertions) in src/bundler and the parser, replacing the single index-0 runtime assumption with per-target runtime lookup (LinkerGraph::runtime_index, RuntimeRefs, bake_entry_point_index) and removing the bake production runtime copy. It touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface; the risk is behavioral drift in chunk ordering, wrapper generation, and bake output indexing. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings and the three earlier inline findings are fixed in the latest commits, but the breadth of linker internals touched and the known remaining global-format read for entry-point exports make a human review worthwhile rather than an automated approve. The only third-party review (coderabbitai) is COMMENTED, not CHANGES_REQUESTED.

Repro (the issue's files):
With
--splittingon 1.4.3 the runtime landed in one shared chunk that starts with// @bun, imported by the server entry and by the browser chunk, and listed in the HTML import manifest. The splitting test asserts that no chunk is shared now.Other index-0 assumptions fixed: the parser's
is_source_runtime(now!allow_runtime, which the bundler clears for exactly the runtime sources),ParseTask::is_runtime(by path namespace), the runtime-first ordering infindAllImportedPartsInJSOrder, the metafile, mergeSmallChunks, the file path comment inpostProcessJSChunk(the runtime helpers get none, as before), and the "Bundled N modules" count. The two chunk prologue sites read the runtime scope through
files.items_input_file()[...], a column that nothing ever wrote (always 0). They index the module scope by the runtime source index now.Bake production wrote the server runtime chunk into
dist/"because the client uses it". The client chunks now carry their own runtime, so that copy andBakeExtra::bake_is_runtimeare gone. The dev server format (
