…nstall itself Both linkers take a package that is in place for installed. A failed lifecycle script already removes the trusted packages whose scripts have not finished. Other exits of an install did not, so later installs printed "(no changes)" and never ran those scripts. The main-thread exits of both linker passes now go through Installer::end, PackageInstaller::abort or InstallCtx::end_install. RestoreManager::drop covers an error return of the hoisted pass. Each removes the trusted packages that this install placed, or started a script in. A package that was in place and is newly trusted stays: the install that trusts it again runs its scripts. The isolated linker withdraws the link tasks that have not started (Step::Withdrawn), and then waits for the thread pool. A task that fails discards its entry. The hoisted pass walks its tree paths before it places a package, because lockfile/Tree.rs ends the process at a path that is too long. The node-gyp shim and the directory helpers return their error inside a pass. enqueue_download and enqueue_tarball_for_reading return NoTemporaryDirectory to a linker. Not covered: a killed install, an exit on another thread, a panic.

Status: ready for review. How it was reproduced: a trusted package is in place and its postinstall has not finished. A patch of another package does not apply, so PR: #46250 |

Assert that the links to the trusted entry a are removed.
The test checks the error message and the exit code. It does not check the cleanup that this PR adds.
a is a trusted link: dependency, and its postinstall has not run. On OwnExit, discard_entries_with_unfinished_scripts pushes a into left_out_entries, and unlink_left_out_entries removes the links to it. If that path regresses, node_modules/a stays in place, and this test still passes.
Add one assertion after the exit-code check:
node_modules/ais not a link.
As an alternative, run a plain bun install again and assert that its output contains "ran".

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the new Step::Withdrawn variant end to end in src/install/isolated_install/Installer.rs (decode of 9 in Step::from, the next_step unreachable arm, and the early Result::None return in the task loop) and the reorder of the fail-early abort() in on_task_fail after the left_out_entries push, which is what lets unlink_left_out_entries remove the link: symlinks before exit. The has_workers() gate on tasks_in_flight.wait() also looks right, since a pool with no workers would never drain. This is a large change to the exit paths of both linkers and their thread-pool interaction, so a maintainer look is still worthwhile.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewires every main-thread exit of the hoisted and isolated linkers through centralized abort/end helpers that discard trusted packages whose lifecycle scripts have not finished, adding a Withdrawn step for not-yet-started pool tasks and a thread-pool wait before exit. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface, but it does change concurrent thread-pool state transitions and filesystem deletion of node_modules entries. The size (+2444/-190 across 15 files), the atomic step CAS and wait-gating semantics, and the one inline nit decided defer rather than approve.
…n error that comes by timing The row for a package whose blocked scripts cannot be read runs a POSIX script in its second install, so it is skipped on Windows like the rows beside it. After `bun add --trust` of a package that cannot link its own bin, the task of the project can come to that bin before bun has removed the package. The row now accepts that second error. The two poll loops of the pool wait rows end when bun exits or a deadline passes, with what bun printed. The docs say that Bun treats a package in node_modules as installed.

The latest push addresses the poll-loop note from my earlier review (both until loops now give up on exit or deadline with the captured stderr), and this run found no bugs; because the core commit rewires every main-thread exit of both linkers and adds thread-pool withdrawal/wait logic, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed: the Step::Withdrawn compare-exchange and the tasks_in_flight.wait() skip when the pool has no workers (a running task overwrites Withdrawn with its next step, so the post-wait discard loop only skips tasks that never ran); the reordering in on_task_fail that moves the fail-early/patch exit after left_out_entries.push (the link: symlinks are now removed by abort before exit, where previously they were not); the on_task_run_fail / stays_trusted split for a task that fails while the install goes on; and the test-only second commit (Windows skip, the accepted timing-dependent second error at test/cli/install/bun-install-lifecycle-scripts.test.ts:3977, and the bounded poll loops).
Extended reasoning...
The change spans 12 source files in src/install (both linkers, the script runner, the enqueue and directory helpers) plus ~2,000 lines of new tests and a source lint; it replaces every direct Global::exit/crash in the install passes with funnels that delete trusted packages from node_modules before exiting, and adds a withdraw-then-wait step for the isolated linker's thread pool. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface, but it deletes user-visible files on error paths and coordinates with pool threads via atomics. The only commit since my prior review is test tweaks that resolve my one inline note, and the bug hunt ran dry, which is why a note rather than silence is posted; the size and cross-thread exit semantics are why it is a defer rather than an approval.
