Problem

  • With the progress bar on, a fatal patch file error starts on the progress line: Resolving [1/2] error: patch file not found: 'patches/basic-1@1.0.0.patch'. An empty or unreadable patch file does the same.
  • Both failure arms of PatchTask::run_from_main_thread_calc_hash (src/install/patch_install.rs:333) print and exit inside run_tasks. Nothing ends the bar that resolve_pending_tasks started.
  • Regression since 1.3.0: Make --linker=isolated the default for bun install #23311 removed the Progress.log call that feat: bun patch #11470 used here. No user reported it.

Fix

  • Both arms call manager.end_progress_bar() before they print. The call does nothing when no bar is on.
  • In crash_on_missing_patch the call comes first: write_pending_patch and package_json_write_back::flush also print and exit.
  • Verified: test/cli/install/bun-patch.test.ts (6 new tests, all fail on main) and bun-install-patch.test.ts.
  • Self-reviewed: 21 concerns raised, 18 addressed. Not done: the same change at other print sites (3 concerns) and a tracking issue. Notes lists those sites.

Background

  • The bar (src/bun_core/Progress.rs) is on when stderr is a terminal outside CI. It leaves the cursor on its line. end_progress_bar() erases that line.
  • An exit does not unwind, so the function that started the bar cannot end it.
  • Considered a line clear in the stderr writer of bun_core: it adds progress state to every command's output path. Considered Progress::log as in feat: bun patch #11470: the bar line stays above the error.

Downsides

  • Other messages still start on the progress line, such as Saving lockfile... EISDIR: ... (Notes).
  • Release .text: +768 bytes (llvm-size -A), all in the two exits. A healthy install makes the same 3 stderr writes as main.
  • With BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1 on a pipe without colors, two progress lines precede the error.
Notes

What stderr holds, bar on

# main, pipe, no colors
Resolving [1/2] error: patch file not found: 'patches/basic-1@1.0.0.patch'

# this branch, pipe, no colors
Resolving [1/2]
Resolving [3/2]
error: patch file not found: 'patches/basic-1@1.0.0.patch'

# this branch, terminal (the bar is erased, the screen shows only the error)
  🔍 Resolving [1/2] ESC[23D ESC[0K 🔍 Resolving [3/2] ESC[23D ESC[0K error: patch file not found: ...
  • The [n/m] numbers vary between runs. The tests do not assert them.
  • end_progress_bar() erases the line when stderr is a terminal, with or without colors. On a pipe the bar is on only with BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1. There it erases if colors are forced on, and writes a newline otherwise.
  • bun patch --commit basic-1 --patches-dir=package.json/patches, while the patch file of another package is missing, printed Resolving [1/2] ENOTDIR: Not a directory: failed to make patches dir "package.json/patches" (mkdir) on main. This is the reason for the position of the first call. One test covers it.
  • --silent prints nothing, as before. The exit code is 1 in every case, as before.
  • 1.3.13 and 1.4.2 print Resolving [1/1] error: Couldn't find patch file: .... The last release without Make --linker=isolated the default for bun install #23311 is 1.2.23.

Measurements (linux x64, main 0973e69 against the same commit with this change)

  • healthy bar-on install (one patched dependency, new node_modules, warm cache): end_progress_bar() called 1 time on main and 1 time on the PR (gdb hit count, debug build, 3 runs each, identical)
  • healthy bar-on install: 3 stderr write(2) calls on main, 3 on the PR, the same bytes (SOCK_SEQPACKET packet count, NO_COLOR and FORCE_COLOR, release builds, 3 runs each)
  • release .text: 81,315,157 -> 81,315,925 bytes, +768 (llvm-size -A). .rodata and .data do not change. The file size does not change (106,850,016 bytes)
  • crash_on_missing_patch 716 -> 1,031 B, PatchTask::run_from_main_thread 3,751 -> 3,763 B, and one new out-of-line copy of end_progress_bar of 323 B (llvm-nm -S). On main every caller inlines it
  • resolve_pending_tasks, run_tasks_erased (holds FinishPass::drop), start_progress_bar, install_with_manager, install_hoisted_packages, install_isolated_packages: 0 differing instructions between main and PR (llvm-objdump, addresses masked)
  • failure path: 1 -> 3 stderr writes before the error (+2), byte before error: is a space on main and \n on the PR (missing and empty patch file, NO_COLOR pipe)
  • NO_COLOR pipe: 2 progress lines precede the error line with the bar on (bar off: 1)
  • bar off: stderr, stdout and exit code equal main for 3 failure states (missing, empty, patches is a file), each with CI=1, --no-progress and --silent (cmp, debug builds)

Tests

  • 4 tests turn the bar on for a pipe with BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1: a missing and an empty patch file, each with and without colors. The test harness sets CI=1, which turns the bar off.
  • 1 test runs bun install on a pseudo terminal, also with BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1. There the bar erases its line with or without colors.
  • 1 test covers the --commit case above.
  • Each test first asserts that a progress frame is in the output. On a debug build of main all 6 fail because the line is Resolving [1/2] error: ....
  • The 6 tests are skipped on Windows. There the bar is drawn on a console only, so a pipe gets no progress line. No Windows lane runs the changed lines.
  • Ran bun-patch.test.ts (224 pass, 5 skip, all Windows only) and bun-install-patch.test.ts (53 pass) on a debug build. Not run: macOS, Windows.

Other designs weighed

  • A clear of the progress line in the flush of Global::exit. The error for an empty or unreadable patch file is written before the exit, in separate writes, so that arm stays on the progress line.
  • Hash the patch files before the bar starts. It changes the path of every install that has patches. A hash that runs later, for a package resolved from a manifest (PackageManagerEnqueue.rs:3345), still fails under the bar.
  • End the bar on the error returns of resolve_pending_tasks. An exit inside run_tasks never returns there.

Not changed: other messages that start on the progress line

These need another mechanism, so they are not in this PR. The lines are from a debug build of this branch (main 5900354 plus this change), with BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1 NO_COLOR=1 and stderr in a pipe. Each state ran 3 times.

State The line that holds the message Exit code Runs
bun.lock is a directory Saving lockfile... EISDIR: Is a directory: Failed to replace old lockfile with new lockfile on disk (rename) 1 3 of 3
A file: dependency whose package.json does not parse, beside a registry dependency Resolving [1/1] 1 | { "name": "dep", oops 1 3 of 3
A git dependency whose repository does not exist Resolving [1/1] git clone file:///tmp/no-such-repo.git 1 3 of 3
The registry answers 503 with Retry-After: 1 once basic-1 [1/1] warn: registry asked to wait 1s before retrying 0 3 of 3
--cafile names a file that does not exist Resolving [1/1] HTTPThread: could not find CA file: '/nonexistent/ca.pem' 1 1 of 3
  • package.json state: the caret on the next line points at the wrong column, because the bar text shifts the source line.
  • --cafile state: another thread prints the message. In the other 2 runs the message came first, and the process left Resolving [1/1] with no line end.
  • Users paste output of this shape, for example 🔍 Resolving [1/1] error: "git clone" for ... failed (issues 17624, 20647 and 28813).

Where they come from:

  • replace_in_cwd (src/install/lockfile.rs:2205), which Lockfile::save_to_disk calls. It runs under the Saving lockfile bar that save_lockfile starts (src/install/PackageManager/PackageManagerDirectories.rs:1358).
  • Package::parse (src/install/lockfile/Package.rs:1797).
  • report_failure (src/install/git_runner.rs:1524). The install continues after it.
  • The retry warning (src/install/retry_timer.rs:77). It uses Progress::log (src/bun_core/Progress.rs:613), which draws the bar again and then writes the message after it.
  • http_thread_on_init_error (src/install/PackageManager.rs:1519), on the HTTP thread.

Other code that prints while a bar is on has the same problem. I did not get these onto a progress line with a fast local registry:

  • The task log print in run_tasks (src/install/PackageManager/runTasks.rs:1174) and failed to apply patchfile (src/install/patch_install.rs:296). In my runs they printed after the Resolving bar had ended and before the bar of the install phase was drawn. That bar is drawn only after 500 ms (initial_delay_ns, src/bun_core/Progress.rs).
  • The error returns of resolve_pending_tasks (src/install/PackageManager/install_with_manager.rs:2243-2259). They skip its end_progress_bar() at :2263.

Why end_progress_bar() does not fit them:

  • After a message that does not end the install, run_tasks starts the bar again when it returns (FinishPass::drop, src/install/PackageManager/runTasks.rs:291).
  • end_progress_bar() does nothing for the Saving lockfile bar (src/install/PackageManager/ProgressStrings.rs:146), and save_to_disk has no PackageManager.
  • The HTTP thread cannot end the bar of the main thread.

A fix for all of them needs one shared mechanism in bun_core. I see two shapes. Progress::log can erase the bar line, write the message, and let the next refresh draw the bar again. Or the stderr writer can clear an open progress line before it writes. That choice belongs to a maintainer, so it is not in this PR.

Status

Reproduced on a debug build of main (0973e69, and again on 6f58f6b), and with the older message text on 1.3.13 and 1.4.2. The project has "patchedDependencies": {"basic-1@1.0.0": "patches/basic-1@1.0.0.patch"} and no patch file:

  • BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1 bun install with stderr in a pipe prints Resolving [1/2] error: patch file not found: 'patches/basic-1@1.0.0.patch' on one line.
  • On a terminal the error is on the progress row in the same way.
  • An empty patch file, and a patches path that is a file, do the same.

On this branch the error starts its own line. The 6 new tests in test/cli/install/bun-patch.test.ts fail on main.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/install/patch_install.rs — Pre-existing sibling: a user whose patch file fails to apply still sees failed to apply patchfile (...) glued onto the progress line, while the missing and empty cases now get their own line. The error is fatal too (runTasks.rs:522 returns InstallFailed, patchPackage.rs:1199 crashes), but run_from_main_thread_apply at patch_install.rs:300-308 prints without ending the bar. Fix: end the bar before every fatal PatchTask print, including this arm; since this arm returns Err instead of exiting, FinishPass::drop (runTasks.rs:299) restarts the bar on unwind, so the install-failure handler must also not redraw it after the error. [also at: src/install/patch_install.rs:339 - Users whose lockfile cannot be written still get the fatal error glued onto a progress line after this merges, while the two patch-file errors now get their own line. save_lockfile starts a Saving lockfile bar at src/install/PackageManager/PackageManagerDirectories.rs:1351, then save_to_disk prints failed to write lockfile (src/install/lockfile.rs:2191) or Failed to replace old lockfile with new lockfile on disk (lockfile.rs:2206) and calls Global::crash with the bar still on.]

    Why this was flagged

A project has a patch in patchedDependencies whose contents no longer apply to the package; bun install runs with the progress bar on. The apply task completes with apply.logger.errors > 0 and PatchTask::run_from_main_thread_apply (src/install/patch_install.rs:300-308) prints failed to apply patchfile (...) while the Installing/Resolving bar line is still open, so the error starts on the bar line exactly as the missing-file error did on the base branch. The install then fails: src/install/PackageManager/runTasks.rs:520-522 returns Err(crate::Error::InstallFailed). The PR adds manager.end_progress_bar() only to the two CalcHash arms (patch_install.rs:202 and :339); this third fatal patch-file arm is left as on base and is not among the sites the PR description lists as intentionally excluded. Adding end_progress_bar() alone here is not enough because the Err return unwinds through FinishPass::drop (runTasks.rs:298-318), which calls start_progress_bar_if_none() and redraws a bar after the error.

Verification: Pre-existing. PatchTask::run_from_main_thread_apply (src/install/patch_install.rs:296-309) on apply.logger.errors > 0 calls Output::err_generic("failed to apply patchfile ({})", ...) with no manager.end_progress_bar() call, unlike the two CalcHash arms the PR fixed at lines 202 and 339. run_tasks then returns Err(crate::Error::InstallFailed) at src/install/PackageManager/runTasks.rs:522.

About the two sites in the review comment above (failed to apply patchfile and the lockfile save errors): this PR does not change them. Both are in the Notes of the description, under "Not changed".

  • run_from_main_thread_apply returns into run_tasks, and FinishPass::drop starts the bar again (src/install/PackageManager/runTasks.rs:291). A call to end_progress_bar() before the print leaves a new bar after the error. In my runs with a fast local registry this error printed after the Resolving bar had ended and before the bar of the install phase was drawn, so it started its own line.
  • The lockfile save runs under the Saving lockfile bar. end_progress_bar() does nothing for that bar, and save_to_disk has no PackageManager. Saving lockfile... EISDIR: ... reproduces in 3 of 3 runs (table in Notes).

Both need the shared mechanism that the Notes describe. That is a change in bun_core, so it is not in this PR.

LGTM — the new push addresses the earlier note on the PTY test (it now sets BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1, so the bar no longer depends on the runner's CI variables), and the two-call fix is small and matches the sibling exit sites.

What was reviewed:

  • end_progress_bar() at the top of crash_on_missing_patch and the None arm of run_from_main_thread_calc_hash (src/install/patch_install.rs:202, :339): it returns early when downloads_node is None, so the calls are safe on the bar-off and --silent paths and when the bar was already ended.
  • The ordering in crash_on_missing_patch: the call precedes write_pending_patch/flush, which print and Global::crash() on their own (the --commit --patches-dir=package.json/patches test exercises that).
  • Test ability to fail: shownLines strips exactly the ESC[nD ESC[0K erase pair Progress::clear_with_held_lock emits, and on an unfixed build the error: line still carries the Resolving [n/m] prefix, so the toEqual([error]) assertions fail there; BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS is read first in default_disable_progress_bar, ahead of the is_ci() check bunEnv would otherwise trip.
  • Sibling print sites that still start on the progress line are enumerated and intentionally excluded in the description; they need a different mechanism since the install continues after them.
Extended reasoning...

The change adds two manager.end_progress_bar() calls in src/install/patch_install.rs on the fatal missing/empty/unreadable patch file paths, plus ~90 lines of tests in test/cli/install/bun-patch.test.ts covering the pipe (with and without colors), a pending --commit whose patches dir cannot be created, and a pseudo-terminal run. It touches no security-sensitive surface: no auth, parsing of untrusted data, or path handling is changed. The fix is three lines, idempotent by construction, and follows the same pattern as the other end_progress_bar callers in src/install; the prior inline finding about the PTY test's environment is addressed in the pushed version, the bug hunt ran dry, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files.

…ile is reported

The progress bar leaves the cursor at the end of its line. When a
patchedDependencies patch file is missing, empty or unreadable, the install
prints its error and exits from inside run_tasks, where no caller can end the
bar. The error started on the progress line:

Resolving [1/2] error: patch file not found: 'patches/basic-1@1.0.0.patch'

Both exits of PatchTask::run_from_main_thread_calc_hash now call
end_progress_bar() first. In crash_on_missing_patch the call is the first
statement, because write_pending_patch and package_json_write_back::flush
print and exit on their own failures.
