src/runtime/bake/dev_server/lifecycle.rs— pre-existing, widened: abun bakeuser who creates a new.tsxpage while the server runs gets a 404 for it until they restart by hand, with no message. The FrameworkRouter is scanned once, at src/runtime/bake/dev_server/lifecycle.rs:532, and nothing watchesapp/pages/for new, renamed or deleted page files, so the route table never changes after start. This differs from the reload-path issue (new_config.bake dropped on reload): even a fixed reload would not run without an app/server.ts edit. Fix: have the dev server watch the router roots and insert, replace or remove routes when a page or layout file appears, is renamed or is deleted, so the running server serves the new URL (and stops serving deleted ones) without a restart. Why this was flagged
A project has app/pages/index.tsx and
bun bakeis running (bake.ts:427 setPages; DevServer::init scans routes once at src/runtime/bake/dev_server/lifecycle.rs:532 via scan_all at lifecycle.rs:814). The user creates app/pages/about.tsx. The dev server's watcher only tracks files already in a graph anddirectory_watchersis only populated for resolution failures (src/runtime/bake/dev_server/failures.rs:385), so no event reaches the router. GET /about goes through the/*catch-all (lifecycle.rs:887) to match_slow (src/runtime/bake/router/mod.rs:464-478), which finds nothing, and falls through to the app's fetch, which bake.ts:410 defaults to a 404 "Not found". Nothing is printed. Editing app/server.ts does not help either, because on_reload_from_zig (src/runtime/server/server_body.rs:1892) never rebuilds the dev server, so only a manual restart serves the page. On the base branchbun bakehas no.tsxpages, so this limitation of FrameworkRouter newly reaches everybun bakeuser whose help text promises hot reloading.Verification: pre-existing (widened): the Bake dev server never rescans a FileSystemRouter after start, and this PR routes
bun bake.tsxpages through it, so a page created while the server runs 404s until a restart. The router is populated exactly once inDevServer::initviadev.scan_initial_routes()?(src/runtime/bake/dev_server/lifecycle.rs:532);dev.routeris never touched byHotReloadEvent::process_file_list(hot_reload_event.rs:97-183).

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new VirtualMachine.bake_framework Strong handle for lifecycle gaps: it is released in VM deinit next to bake_config_plugins, and set_pages only sets or clears it on the JS thread, so the teardown wiring matches the existing sibling field.
Extended reasoning...
This run posts eight inline findings on the bake framework/plugin paths, the React version check, and the dev-server hidden-page report, and the hunt was cut off at the bug cap rather than running dry, so approval is not on the table. The one additional concern examined and ruled out is the new owning Strong field on VirtualMachine, whose release is wired into deinit in src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs in the same change.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.
The last 3 reviews of this pull request each found new blocking issues, repeatedly in src/js/internal/bake.ts and src/runtime/server/ServerConfig.rs. Where they share a root cause, one fix may close them together.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 (optional) pre-existing panic site, newly reachable: a bake.config.ts plugin whose router style is a function, the CustomFileSystemRouterFunction form bake.d.ts:295 documents, crashes bun bake with a panic instead of the one-line bake.config.ts error. Style::from_js at src/runtime/bake/router/style.rs:38-39 accepts any callable as JavascriptDefined, so checkFramework and Bun.serve() both pass, and the first file the router scans hits panic!("TODO: customizable Style") at style.rs:91. Fix: reject a callable style with an invalid-arguments error in Style::from_js (or drop JavascriptDefined), which covers both bake.config.ts and the Bun.serve({ app }) path; an unimplemented input must be an error, never a panic.
Why this was flagged
bake.config.ts has plugins: [{ name: "fw", framework: { fileSystemRouterTypes: [{ root: "app/pages", style: path => ({ ... }), serverEntryPoint: "./r.ts" }] } }] and app/pages/ has at least one .tsx file. src/js/internal/bake.ts:223 calls checkFramework; Style::from_js at src/runtime/bake/router/style.rs:38-39 returns Style::JavascriptDefined for any callable, so no error is thrown. bake.ts:461 then calls setPages, Bun.serve() parses the same object again, and DevServer::init runs scan_initial_routes. For the first file whose extension matches, scan_inner calls t.style.parse(...) at src/runtime/bake/router/mod.rs:688, which is panic!("TODO: customizable Style") at style.rs:91: the process dies with Bun's crash report. The checkFramework guard that this change adds to turn framework mistakes into "bake.config.ts": the framework of ... errors lets this input through. On the base branch the same panic is reachable only through Bun.serve({ app: { framework } }) behind the bake feature flag; this change adds the bake.config.ts entry point whose types advertise the function form.
Verification: Style::from_js at src/runtime/bake/router/style.rs:38-39 does else if value.is_callable() { return Ok(Style::JavascriptDefined); }, so neither checkFramework nor Bun.serve() rejects it. The router scan calls t.style.parse(...) at src/runtime/bake/router/mod.rs:687-689, and Style::parse at style.rs:91 is Style::JavascriptDefined => panic!("TODO: customizable Style").

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 nit (optional): A project whose installed react or react-dom package.json has no version field (a linked workspace package) is told "app/pages/ has .tsx pages, which need React. Install it: bun add react" although React is installed, and a package.json that fails to parse kills bun bake with a raw SyntaxError stack. installedVersion at bake.ts:294 returns .version unchecked and does not catch JSON.parse. Fix: distinguish "not installed" from "installed without a readable version" (resolve succeeded) and report the latter as a BakeError naming the package.json path, for both react and react-dom.
Why this was flagged
A monorepo links react and react-dom from a workspace folder whose package.json omits version, or a corrupted node_modules/react/package.json. checkReactForPages (src/js/internal/bake.ts:300-320) calls installedVersion; at bake.ts:294 Bun.resolveSync succeeds but JSON.parse(...).version is undefined, so bake.ts:305-306 builds the "Install it: bun add react" message and exits 1, misreporting an installed React as missing. For invalid JSON, JSON.parse throws a SyntaxError that is not a BakeError, so main() at bake.ts:512 rethrows it and the user sees a stack trace rather than the one-line error the PR promises. The base branch does not run this check, so these projects could start before.
Verification: nit. Triggering condition: the project's resolved react or react-dom package.json either omits version or is not valid JSON. Mechanism verified at src/js/internal/bake.ts:287-295: line 294 returns whatever .version is, unchecked, and does not catch parse errors. React is installed but reported missing. New code in this PR, so nothing regresses.

Invalidate cached bundles for client-only dependencies.
For clientPages, browser-only page and layout files are copied into client_graph, but they are not server-component HMR roots. A dependency edit can therefore mark the client graph stale without adding the route to framework_routes_affected. The invalidation block at src/runtime/bake/dev_server/finalize.rs:782-800 then leaves the route's cached client_bundle intact.
Connect client-graph dependency changes to route-bundle invalidation.

Line 240 reads router.root in the condition and again in its body. The reported bun lint --format=github run fails on this rule. Store the root in a local and use that local for the check and error message.

Wait for the updated bundle instead of counting requests.
If the file watcher or rebuild takes longer than 200 bundle requests, this loop stops before second-version appears. The test can then fail even though the update succeeds. Poll until the expected content arrives and let the test runner enforce its timeout. As per coding guidelines, “Do not write flaky tests” and “Always wait for the condition to be met instead of waiting for an arbitrary amount of time.”

🟡 nit (optional): Maintainers get a test that passes when the dev server never serves the edited page, as long as the post-edit HTML has no script tag. At test/cli/bake/bake.test.ts:1194 bundle() returns "" when the HTML has no <script type="module" src=...>, and after the 200-iteration loop at line 1204 the only check is expect(code).not.toContain("first-version") at line 1205, which "" satisfies. Fix: assert the positive condition, expect(code).toContain("second-version") (and keep the negative one), so the test can only pass when the new bundle was actually served.
Why this was flagged
The test "bun bake sends a page's new code to a page load after an edit" (test/cli/bake/bake.test.ts:1182-1206) rewrites app/pages/index.tsx and polls bundle() up to 200 times. bundle() at test/cli/bake/bake.test.ts:1190-1195 returns "" whenever the fetched HTML lacks a module script tag, e.g. when the server answers with an error page or hydrates without a client bundle after a regression. The loop at line 1204 then exits after 200 iterations with code === "", and the sole assertion at line 1205, expect(code).not.toContain("first-version"), passes vacuously. A regression in the invalidation added in src/runtime/bake/dev_server/finalize.rs:782-801 that also makes the page render without its script would not fail this test. There is no toContain("second-version") assertion. This differs from the earlier unbounded-loop comment at this site: the loop is now bounded, but the final assertion cannot distinguish "new code served" from "nothing served".
Verification: nit — triggered whenever, after the edit, the dev server keeps answering / with HTML that has no <script type="module" src=...> (an error page, a bundler failure on the edited file, or a regression that drops the client bundle).
This PR adds
.tsxand.jsxpages tobun bake, and frameworks inbake.config.ts. It is the next step of the new Bake design (https://github.com/alii/bake-rfc), after #45902.A framework decides how files become routes and how a route becomes HTML.
bun bakehas a default framework: the.tsxand.jsxpages ofapp/pages/, in Next.js pages style (index.tsx,[slug].tsx,_layout.tsxfor layouts; files and folders that start with_are not pages). The default framework uses the project's own
reactandreact-dom, not a copy in Bun. It streams the HTML from the server, then hydrates it in the browser. Fast Refresh keeps the state of a page when you edit it.Before it starts,
bun bakechecks the project's React for the default framework. It exits with a one-line error when React is not installed, when the version is not 18 or 19, or whenreactandreact-domare different versions. Each error gives thebun addcommand that fixes it.A plugin in
bake.config.tscan bring its own framework instead. Itsframeworkis the same object as theframeworkof theappoption ofBun.serve(), read by the same parser: its routers (fileSystemRouterTypes: folder, style, entry points, extensions, layouts),serverComponents, reactFastRefresh, builtInModulesandplugins.A plugin with a
frameworkneeds nosetup(). Two plugins with a framework are an error..htmlpages inapp/pages/andapp/server.tswork with every framework.A router type has a new option,
clientPages. With it, the pages and layouts also go into the browser build, and the client entry point loads those of the current route fromrouteofbun:bake/client, to hydrate the server's HTML. It cannot be used withserverComponents, where the browser gets the client components instead. The default framework sets it.How it works
internal/bake.tschecks theframeworkof a plugin when it loadsbake.config.ts: it runs the parser ofBun.serve()on it (checkFramework), and resolves its entry points from the project root. A mistake is then a one-line error ofbake.config.ts, andbun bakewaits for a fix.internal/bake.tsgives the framework to its ownBun.serve()through a private function (setPages), not a new public option.ServerConfigparses the plugin's object withFramework::from_js, or makes the default withFramework::bake_pages.clientPages, the dev server adds the page and its layouts to the client graph, traces them into the route's browser bundle, and writes their IDs intoconfig.routeof the bundle. The browser runtime gives them tobun:bake/clientasroute.page()androute.layouts().config.routeis set, it now applies that part too, so Fast Refresh updates the page in place.bun:bake/clientandbun:bake/servernow resolve for every framework. Before, they resolved only with server components. The HMR runtime always provides them.Fixes in the same code
[a].tsxand[b].tsx) panicked with "TODO: propagate aliased route error". The router now reports its usual "Multiple pages matching the same route pattern is ambiguous" error, with both files, and keeps serving.app/server.tsroutes,.htmlpages) with the same path as a framework page hid the page with no message. The dev server now printserror: The server has a route "/about", which hides the page app/pages/about.ts, and keeps serving. It checks when the server sets its routes (at the start and on a reload ofapp/server.ts) and when the router adds a page; the test covers the start.assertion failed: self.current_chunk_len > 0). It now gets a 404, andmeta.modulesis empty for such a route. Not in this PR
bun bake build(a production build).styleis one of the three Next.js styles. The function form in the types was never implemented.bake.config.tsand ofroute. They go in the docs PR (docs: bun bake #45751).Tests
test/cli/bake/bake.test.ts: the default framework with a layout and a param, next to an.htmlpage andapp/server.tsroutes; the three React errors; a framework plugin with its own folder (src/routes) and extension, no React and no client entry point;clientPagesputs only the current route's page in its browser bundle; two pages with the same pattern; a page that anapp/server.tsroute hides; two frameworks; a framework that the parser rejects; a framework entry point that cannot be found;clientPageswithserverComponents.test/bake/dev/react-spa.test.ts: in the test browser, a page of the default framework hydrates (a click changes the state), then an edit to the page keeps the state (clicks 2, not a reload).test/bake/, 31 tests fail locally: theproduction,server-sourcemap,react-response,ssg-pages-routerandrequest-cookiestests install the experimental React of the server components framework first, and that install fails on my machine's package mirror. The rest pass. CI runs them all.
