When an input file ends in a sourceMappingURL comment (the output of a previous tsc, esbuild or compiler step), bun build now loads that map and translates every mapping it emits for the file through it. The output map lists that map's sources and sourcesContent in place of the intermediate file, so positions, error stacks and debuggers reach the original sources. Inline data: URLs (base64 or percent-encoded) and sidecar .map files are read, in //#, //@ and block comments; sourceRoot and sections (index maps) are applied; missing sourcesContent entries are read from disk. A map that cannot be loaded is a warning and the file maps to itself as before. The lexer recorded pragma argument locations with the comment's own offset added twice, so warnings about a pragma outside the file's first comment pointed past it. They now point at the argument.
…sourcesContent A published package that names a .map it does not ship is common, so a missing sidecar no longer warns (esbuild logs it at debug level too); unreadable files, bad data: URLs and malformed maps still warn. The standalone module graph rejected a null sourcesContent entry with InvalidSourceMap, which made bun build --compile --sourcemap fail for an input map whose original source is not on disk. It now stores such an entry as empty, which the loader already treats as no contents.
…non-ASCII byte Adds tests for a non-ASCII sidecar name, an onLoad result with an inline map, a build without --sourcemap next to a broken sidecar, and the two-step bundle and compile flow.

…time, no bundle preview under an original file name The sidecar comment and the map's sources entries now share one policy: a file: URL through bun_url (query and fragment dropped, absolute paths only), any other scheme kept as written, a relative path percent-decoded with the lenient WHATWG decoder. InputSourceMap keeps sourcesContent per source. The runtime lookup no longer joins a URL source (webpack://...) onto the bundle directory, and prints no code preview when the frame names an original file whose text it does not have. ENOTDIR on a sidecar is silent like ENOENT. Docs for the bundler and for --compile mention the composition.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things and ruled them out: the reworked scan_source_mapping_url_value loop still terminates the URL at a tab (the SIMD scan in highway_strings.cpp stops at any byte <= space, and the Rust wrapper's tab exemption only applies to the first byte of each restart), and the new global-heap InputFile.input_source_map column is taken and dropped in deinit_without_freeing_arena before the arena reset, so it does not leak through the arena path.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds esbuild-style input source map composition across the lexer, ParseTask, LinkerContext, the printer's chunk builder, and the runtime remapper, plus a new JSON map parser that reads attacker-supplied dependency files from disk. Four verified findings are posted inline, so a human review is already signaled; this note only records two additional candidates checked from the diff and ruled out.

src/bundler/input_source_map.rs— A dependency can makebun build --sourcemapallocate without bound or hang: a//# sourceMappingURL=naming a device or FIFO is read to EOF with no size or file-type check. At src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:58bun_sys::File::read_fromrunsread_to_end, which loops until EOF, so/dev/zero(or../../../../dev/urandom) grows the buffer until ENOMEM/OOM-kill and a FIFO blocks the parse worker inopen. Fix: before reading any map orsourcesContentpath taken from file content, require a regular file (fstat) and cap the read at a fixed size, warning and mapping the file to itself otherwise; the same applies to theread_fileclosure at input_source_map.rs:442 used by InputSourceMap.rs:1054.Why this was flagged
A package in node_modules ships
dist/index.jsending in//# sourceMappingURL=/dev/zero(orfile:///dev/urandom, or a relative traversal to a device; a FIFO on the build machine also works).bun build --sourcemap(any value but none, no dev server) reachescrate::input_source_map::loadfrom src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:2765. src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:396-409 resolves the path with no check of what it names, then :411 callsbun_sys::File::read_from, which isopenat+read_to_end(src/sys/file.rs:339-344);read_fill_vec(src/sys/lib.rs:4600-4616) keeps growing the Vec until a read returns 0, which never happens for/dev/zero, so memory grows untiltry_reservefails or the OOM killer intervenes; for a FIFOopenatblocks forever and the build never finishes. On the base branch the comment is never opened, and the bundler's own source reads are stat-bounded (src/resolver/fs.rs:742-761), so no dependency content could trigger an unbounded read. The only guard in the new code is the ENOENT/ENOTDIR match at :414, which does not apply.Verification: src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:43-56 resolves the comment text to a path with no check of what the path names. :58 calls
bun_sys::File::read_from; src/sys/file.rs:339-344 isopenatthenf.read_to_end(), and src/sys/lib.rs:4593-4617read_fill_vecloopspreaduntiln == 0, which/dev/zeronever returns. The same unboundedread_fromis reused at :89 forsourcesContententries.
… sort merged sections A sidecar map or a missing sourcesContent entry is read only when the path names a regular file, and only up to the size fstat reports, so a device or a pipe named by file content cannot hang the build or grow memory without bound. bun build --watch registers the sidecar with the watcher, so a map written after its .js triggers a rebuild. Sections are always sorted after a merge. An allocation failure while a map is parsed goes through the OOM handler instead of a build warning. --compile rejects a sourcesContent entry that is neither a string nor null.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The three points from my earlier pass (sidecar not registered with the watcher, OOM mapped to a build warning, unsorted overlapping sections) are addressed in beb91e3 — thanks. Beyond this round's inline comments, I also checked two more things and ruled them out: a file carrying several sourceMappingURL comments keeps the last one, which matches esbuild's lexer; and a sidecar that is valid JSON but has no version: 3 / mappings / sources is skipped silently at InputSourceMap.rs:124-145, which is also esbuild's behavior rather than a lost error.
Extended reasoning...
The change is a ~1,400-line addition across the lexer, parse task, chunk builder, linker and standalone graph that composes output source maps through each input file's own map, on by default with no opt-out. Its security-relevant surface is reading local files named by third-party .map content into the output map, which is the subject of an inline finding this run. Both ruled-out items were checked against the code and esbuild's documented behavior, and no earlier objection remains open in the code.

Track sidecar paths even when loading fails.
load resolves the sidecar path but returns None when the file is missing or malformed. The watcher then registers only paths stored in a successfully parsed InputSourceMap. Under --watch, creating or correcting the sidecar may therefore leave the output map stale until another watched input changes.
Carry the resolved filesystem sidecar path as watcher metadata independently of parsing, and register it even when map loading fails.

Route allocation failure to the OOM handler.
If try_reserve_exact(size) fails, read_regular_file returns an error. The loader reports an unreadable source map and continues without composition. Convert this allocation failure with bun_core::handle_oom or .unwrap_or_oom() instead. As per coding guidelines, “OOM handling: do not let a runtime OOM unwind into FFI. Use bun_core::handle_oom (or the .unwrap_or_oom() extension) to convert Result<T, AllocError> into a controlled crash.”

🟡 nit (optional): a # sourceMappingURL= or @ sourceMappingURL= fragment anywhere inside any comment now makes bun build --sourcemap try to load that text as the file's map. scan_pragma at src/js_parser/lexer.rs:2207 accepts the prefix for every #/@ marker the comment loop visits, not only the comment's own leading //#, //@, /*# or /*@ marker (esbuild requires the marker at index 2). On the base branch nothing read the recorded URL; now a doc comment quoting an example data: map in a dependency yields a warning the user cannot fix, and a quoted sidecar name is opened. Fix: record source_mapping_url only when the marker is the comment's leading one, matching esbuild for both // and /* */ comments.
Why this was flagged
An input file contains a comment such as // strip the "//# sourceMappingURL=data:application/json;base64,..." trailer, and it is the last such fragment in the file. In scan_single_line_comment (src/js_parser/lexer.rs:2108-2126) and the multi-line loop (src/js_parser/lexer.rs:1972-1993) every #/@ byte is handed to scan_pragma, which at src/js_parser/lexer.rs:2207-2215 only checks chunk.starts_with(b" sourceMappingURL=") and overwrites self.source_mapping_url; there is no check that the marker is the comment's leading one (esbuild's scanCommentText only accepts it when i == 2). The value reaches Ast.source_mapping_url (src/js_parser/p.rs:9393) and, with sourcemaps enabled, input_source_map::load (src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:2794-2797). For a data: fragment, src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:48-55 adds the warning Unsupported source map comment: could not decode the "data:" URL on a node_modules file; for a path fragment the bundler opens it relative to the file (src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:70-79). The base branch recorded the same span but never read it, so no warning and no file access occurred.
Verification: Triggered when an input file bundled with --sourcemap has, as its last #/@ marker inside any comment, text followed by sourceMappingURL=. scan_pragma (src/js_parser/lexer.rs:2207-2215) only tests chunk.starts_with(b" sourceMappingURL=") with no check that the marker is at comment index 2. On the base branch nothing read Lexer::source_mapping_url; now ParseTask.rs:2794-2799 passes it to input_source_map::load.

🟡 nit (optional): a bun build --watch user whose input's sidecar .map does not exist yet at parse time never gets a rebuild when it is written; the output map keeps pointing at the intermediate file. At src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:7886 the add_file_by_path_slow result is discarded, and that call fails for a missing path (macOS open at src/watcher/Watcher.rs:853-856, Linux watch_path at src/watcher/Watcher.rs:581), so the later creation of the .map is not observed. Fix: make a sidecar that is absent at parse time still trigger a rebuild when it appears, e.g. let the directory watch react to the registered sidecar basename, or re-stat each sidecar before reusing a build.
Why this was flagged
A tool writes x.js and then x.js.map, or a user turns on the upstream tool's source maps while bun build --watch --sourcemap is running, so the sidecar does not exist when bun's rebuild parses x.js. src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:77 records the sidecar path and src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:93-100 returns None on ENOENT, so Success.input_source_map_sidecar is set and src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:7879-7887 calls add_file_by_path_slow with let _ =. On macOS bun_sys::open of the missing path fails and the function returns false at src/watcher/Watcher.rs:853-856; on Linux self.platform.watch_path(slice)? at src/watcher/Watcher.rs:581 fails with ENOENT and src/watcher/Watcher.rs:871-876 returns false. Only the parent directory watch survives (src/watcher/Watcher.rs:734-748), and the reloader's directory handler skips names whose extension has no loader (.map falls to Loader::File, src/jsc/hot_reloader.rs:1136-1145), so the .map write never enqueues a reload. The user keeps an output map whose sources name the intermediate file until some other watched file changes.
Verification: src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:7883-7886 then does let _ = this.bun_watcher_mut().unwrap().add_file_by_path_slow(&sidecar); discarding the result. That call fails for a missing path: on macOS/FreeBSD src/watcher/Watcher.rs:853-856 bun_sys::open(z, WATCH_OPEN_FLAGS, 0) → Err(_) => return false; on Linux src/watcher/Watcher.rs:581 self.platform.watch_path(slice)? → Err, so no watchlist entry is appended.

🟡 nit (optional): a null or empty sources entry in an input map is written to the output map as the map's own directory. At src/sourcemap/InputSourceMap.rs:224 name.as_str().unwrap_or(b"") feeds resolve_source, which joins the empty name onto map_dir (:311-314) and marks it is_file: true, so the linker prints the directory's relative path as a source name. Fix: keep a null or empty source as an empty, non-file name (esbuild emits "") instead of resolving it against map_dir, and skip the disk read for it.
Why this was flagged
An input map lists "sources": [null, "a.ts"] (ECMA-426 allows null entries; some concatenating tools emit them) and the file is bundled with bun build --sourcemap. InputSourceMap::parse reaches src/sourcemap/InputSourceMap.rs:223-229, where name.as_str().unwrap_or(b"") passes an empty name to resolve_source. With source_root empty, path_from_file_url and url_scheme both return None, so join_path(map_dir, "") at :311-314 yields map_dir itself and is_file: true. generate_source_map_for_chunk (src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:1286-1288) then calls source_map_relative_path on that directory and writes e.g. "../lib" into sources, and :248 tries to read the directory for sourcesContent. On the base branch the file maps to itself and no map-provided names appear. Consumers of the output map see a directory where the source name should be empty.
Verification: nit — triggered when an input map's sources array has a null or "" entry and map_dir is Some. src/sourcemap/InputSourceMap.rs:223-228 passes the empty name to resolve_source, which joins it onto map_dir (:311-318) as is_file: true. src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:1281-1284 writes the map's directory into the output sources. The base branch never composes input maps, so this is new.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 nit (optional): a sourceMappingURL or map sources entry containing %00 is percent-decoded into a path with an embedded NUL, so the open silently targets the truncated path. src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:71 and src/sourcemap/InputSourceMap.rs:313 call decode_lenient_alloc and hand the bytes straight to read_regular_file, whose openat_a NUL-terminates the buffer. Fix: reject (treat as unloadable, or warn) any decoded sidecar or source path that contains a NUL byte before it reaches the filesystem, the watcher or the output map, covering the relative-path, file: URL and sources resolution sites. Same pattern at 3 sites (src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:71, src/sourcemap/InputSourceMap.rs:313, src/sourcemap/InputSourceMap.rs:353).
Why this was flagged
A dependency's dist/index.js ends with //# sourceMappingURL=index.js.map%00x (or its map lists sources: ["../src/a.ts%00x"] with no sourcesContent). ParseTask calls load (src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:2796) under bun build --sourcemap. At src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:71 decode_lenient_alloc turns %00 into a 0x00 byte and the joined path at :73-75 keeps it. read_regular_file (:139) passes it to bun_sys::File::openat, which goes through openat_a (src/sys/lib.rs:6252-6262) and NUL-terminates the copy, so the kernel opens index.js.map, not the name the comment gave. The same bytes are stored as the watcher path at src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:7879-7886 and, for sources, written into the output map at src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:1286. resolve_source at src/sourcemap/InputSourceMap.rs:313 and path_from_file_url at :353 are the sibling sites. On the base branch no path from a map or comment is ever opened. REVIEW.md asks that strings from untrusted files that become paths reject NUL and that embedded NULs never reach C APIs; nothing here checks for one.
Verification: nit. Trigger: an input JS file carries //# sourceMappingURL=<path>%00<rest> under bun build --sourcemap. src/bundler/input_source_map.rs:71 decode_lenient_alloc turns %00 into a 0x00 byte; read_regular_file calls openat_a (src/sys/lib.rs:6252-6262), so the kernel opens the path truncated at the first embedded NUL. NUL truncation grants no file-read reach an attacker lacks otherwise.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 nit (optional): a maintainer whose bun build --watch child crashes or exits early gets a test that hangs to the per-test timeout with no diagnostics instead of a prompt failure. waitForSources at test/cli/watch/watch.test.ts:785-791 polls forever and never observes bundler.exited, and stderr is spawned with "ignore". Fix: race each poll against bundler.exited (reject with the exit code and captured stderr) and bound the poll window, so every failure path of the child rejects the awaited promise.
Why this was flagged
The test spawns bun build --watch at test/cli/watch/watch.test.ts:796-803 with stderr: "ignore", then awaits waitForSources (:785-791), a while (true) loop that sleeps 50ms between reads of out/entry.js.map. Nothing in that loop reads bundler.exited, so if the child dies (a crash in the new sidecar watcher path, a build error, a sandbox kill) the expected sources never appear and the loop spins until the harness timeout. The failure then reports a timeout with no stderr rather than the child's exit code or error text. The base branch does not have this test; the repository review rules ask that every failure event, including process exit, reject the awaited promise and that polls be bounded.
Verification: The bun build --watch child exits or crashes before the expected sources land in out/entry.js.map. At test/cli/watch/watch.test.ts:787-793 waitForSources loops with no bound and nothing reads bundler.exited; stderr is spawned with "ignore". If the child dies, the loop spins until the per-test timeout with no exit code or stderr. REVIEW.md requires wiring process exit to reject the awaited promise and bounding poll windows.
Fixes #45372
Problem
bun build --sourcemapignores an input file's own//# sourceMappingURL=map (the output of a tsc, esbuild, Vite or earlierbun buildstep). The output map stops at the intermediate file:sources: ["../step1/x.js"]. Stack traces frombun out.jsand from a--compiled binary stop there too, atstep1/x.js:5:9instead ofsrc/x.ts:6:9.Lexer::source_mapping_url) but nothing reads it. The chunk builder encodes every token against the intermediate file and the linker writes onesourcesslot per input file (LinkerContext::generate_source_map_for_chunk).Fix
ParseTaskloads the map the comment names: adata:URL, afile:URL or a relative sidecar path, from//#,//@or/* */comments.InputSourceMap::parseappliessourceRootandsections, resolvessourcesagainst the map's directory, and reads a missingsourcesContententry from disk. A missing sidecar is skipped silently (as in esbuild). An unreadable or malformed map is a warning, and the file then maps to itself as before.sourcesandsourcesContentin place of the intermediate file. This is esbuild's design, layer for layer.--compilestores anullsourcesContententry as empty instead of failing.sourcesentry (webpack://pkg/src/a.ts) is printed as written instead of joined onto the bundle directory, and a frame renamed to an original file whose text is unavailable gets no code preview instead of the bundle's lines.test/bundler/bundler_edgecase.test.ts(edgecase/InputSourceMap*, 15 cases),test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts(file:URL, pragma location),test/bundler/bun-build-compile-sourcemap.test.ts(the issue's two-step bundle and compile flow).
