Problem

  • socket.timeout(seconds) on a Bun.listen or Bun.connect socket never calls the timeout handler when seconds is above 240. It also cancels the 120-second default of an accepted socket.
  • NewSocketHandler::set_timeout (src/uws_sys/socket.rs:470) sends values above 240 s to the minute wheel of uSockets. NewSocket inherits the empty on_long_timeout (src/runtime/socket/uws_handlers.rs:72).

Fix

  • us_socket_t.timeout_tick is the group->global_tick at which the timeout is due: a uint32_t in pad bytes. The sweep compares with >=.
  • NewSocketHandler::set_timeout no longer splits. The fetch and WebSocket clients pad their values for the minute wheel and keep the split as set_timeout_or_long_timeout.
  • Correct because a stamp and the sweep count the ticks of the same group, and each path that moves a socket to another group resets the stamp.
  • Verified: 7 new tests (socket.test.ts, websocket-proxy.test.ts), 25 suites against main. Self-reviewed: 29 concerns raised, 25 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • uSockets sweeps every 4 seconds: it advances the global_tick of each socket group and calls on_timeout for each due socket. A second wheel, in minutes, calls on_long_timeout.
  • The tests run the sweep by hand with sweepSocketTimers(n), new in bun:internal-for-testing.
  • Considered: forward on_long_timeout in NewSocket (socket: clamp long-timeout wheel to 239 min and wire the handler for Bun sockets #34828). That fires up to 60 s early and wraps at 240 minutes.

Downsides

  • Behavior change: a server that calls socket.timeout(n) once with n above 240 and ends the socket in timeout now ends it after n seconds, busy or not. Before, the call did nothing.
  • No cost found for other callers: socket.timeout(120) 106 to 100 instructions, sweep 9 to 8 per idle socket, Bun.serve static request 5,301 to 5,286 (Linux x64 release). .text shrinks 1,024 bytes.
Notes

Reach. An automated check found this. There is no user report. The split came with #6217 (b444c0b, first in v1.0.4), which moved the fetch idle timeout to 5 minutes. Through v1.0.3 a value up to 956 s fired: the 4-second wheel held 239 ticks in an 8-bit slot. Public callers above 240 s that I found pass 300, 600, 3600 and up to 86,400.

Before and after. The fixture prints the sweep at which each timeout handler ran. One sweep is 4 seconds. "main" is ed68082 plus the test hook.

this PR:

socket.timeout(240): timeout() after 240 s
socket.timeout(241): timeout() after 244 s
socket.timeout(300): timeout() after 300 s

The uSockets change.

  • timeout_tick is group->global_tick + ceil(seconds / 4). LIBUS_TIMEOUT_NONE (UINT32_MAX) means not armed. The sweep compares with >= at its three sites: the scan loop, the dispatch, and the walk over the TLS handshake queue.
  • The field has a new name on purpose. A branch that still writes s->timeout = 255 (open Bun.serve: server.adopt(fd) serves a connection accepted elsewhere #44768 adds one) now fails to compile. With the old name it would merge and mean "due at tick 255".
  • The field sits in pad bytes: before group in us_socket_t, after error in us_connecting_socket_t. Sizes computed with clang for Linux, macOS and FreeBSD (x64, arm64) and Windows (x64, arm64): us_socket_t 80 and 96 bytes, us_connecting_socket_t 96, the same as main. A _Static_assert pins the us_socket_t offset.
  • A due tick counts the ticks of one group. Each path that sets s->group resets the stamp. us_socket_adopt now clears the stamp of a connecting socket that it moves to another group.
  • start_connections copies the stamp of a connecting socket to the socket of each address. If the name lookup outlasts the timeout, the next sweep fires it, unless the socket opens first. On main the slot had passed, so it fired up to 960 s later.
  • us_socket_group_t.timestamp and us_socket_group_timestamp() are deleted: nothing reads them now. The group is 80 bytes, was 88.
  • The minute wheel (long_timeout, us_socket_long_timeout) is unchanged.

uWS and idleTimeout: 0. Before #45223, uWS computed idleTimeout - margin in 16 bits, so a Bun.serve WebSocket with idleTimeout: 0 and pings armed 65532 s, and the 240 slots wrapped that to a ping at 252 s. With a due tick the same call would mean 18.2 hours. #45223 makes idleTimeout: 0 arm no timer, and this PR is rebased on it, so it needs no uWS edit. No other uWS call passes more than 960 s. The Bun.serve test pins 120 s, 960 s and 0.

The Rust change. NewSocketHandler::set_timeout arms the 4-second wheel for any length and clears the minute stamp. NewSocket::timeout and Listener::on_create call it as before, so the fix needs no line in src/runtime/socket/. The old body is set_timeout_or_long_timeout. Ten call sites use it: three in the fetch client (h1, h2, keep-alive pool) and seven in the WebSocket client (handshake, close, proxy tunnel). These owners normalise their value with bun_http::normalize_idle_timeout_seconds (#33647, #39955) and implement on_long_timeout, so their timing does not change.

Behavior change. socket.timeout(n) with n above 240 now runs the timeout handler once, n seconds after the call, whatever the traffic. Since v1.0.4 such a call never ran it and also cancelled the accept default. Two public projects arm once in open and end the socket in timeout (a TCP proxy with a default of 300 s, a mail server with 300, 600 and 3600 s). Their connections now end after n seconds, also when they are active.

Question for a maintainer. Should the TCP timer stay one-shot? It has been one-shot since #1374. The duplex and named pipe transports restart on I/O, and node:net uses a JS timer for that reason (#21263). An idle timer would be about 30 lines in NewSocket. This PR documents and tests the one-shot behavior.

Not changed.

  • The fetch and WebSocket clients stay on the minute wheel. To move them changes fetch timing (the pad is sized for 60-second steps), so it is a separate change: call set_timeout, size the pad for 4 seconds, then delete set_timeout_or_long_timeout, on_long_timeout and the minute wheel in C. uWS maxLifetime is always 0 in Bun, so nothing else arms that wheel.
  • Bun.serve expects idleTimeout to be 255 or less #15589 is not fixed. Bun.serve still rejects idleTimeout above 255, and the WebSocket idleTimeout still stops at 960. This PR removes the uSockets limit below them.
  • The sweep does not walk connecting sockets. A timeout armed while the name lookup is pending cannot fire before the lookup ends. Only the WebSocket handshake timeout is armed that early, and the OS resolver bounds the wait. usockets: stagger connect attempts to the addresses of a name (RFC 8305) #41501 touches the same code.
  • A duplex or Windows named pipe socket has its own millisecond timer, which restarts on I/O. It keeps milliseconds in 32 bits, so a value above 4,294,967 s overflows there, as on main.
  • The handler can run up to 4 s before seconds, as on main for values up to 240. A long timeout also runs late on a busy loop, because each sweep starts 4 s after the previous one ran (uws: drop us_timer_t on epoll/kqueue in favor of bun's timer heap #33359).

Cost, Linux x64 release, main ed68082 against this branch. Instructions are counted with gdb single-step. valgrind and bloaty cannot be installed in this container.

stripped binary bytes                             106,858,208   106,858,208

The symbols sum to -896 bytes, which includes 548 bytes for the test hook (one host function). ab -k -c 64, 400,000 requests, 7 interleaved rounds: server CPU per request 16.0 µs on main (15.4 to 19.0) and 15.7 µs on this branch (15.5 to 17.9), so no difference above the noise.

Tests.

  • Five tests fail on main plus the hook and pass here: each value on an accepted and a client socket (TCP, TLS), sockets parked in the TLS handshake queue, both sockets of an upgradeTLS pair, and a timeout that came due during a name lookup. On main itself each of them fails at the import of sweepSocketTimers.
  • Two tests pass on both and guard this diff. keeps the idle timeout of a Bun.serve WebSocket pins the sweeps at which 120 s and 960 s close a silent client, and that 0 arms nothing. The websocket-proxy test fails when set_timeout(0) does not clear the minute stamp (the tunnel closes with 1006).
  • Other mutants that I built: == in place of >= fails the name lookup test, a 16-bit tick fails timeout(262160), and no dispatch in the handshake queue walk fails the parked test.
  • The tests keep an explicit timeout of 60 s. Each starts a bun process, and on a debug ASAN build 4 of them hit the 5 s default in 1 of 2 runs of the whole file.
  • The split helper has no test of its own. The WebSocket client is the only owner that the hook reaches, and its defaults are below 240 s.
  • sweepSocketTimers reaches the uSockets sockets of the calling thread. It does not reach the HTTP client thread, nor named pipe and duplex sockets.
  • Debug builds of this branch and of main plus the hook, no failure that reproduces only on this branch: socket, tcp-server, socket-syscall-fault, socket-retention, serve, bun-server, serve-http2-lifecycle, websocket-server, websocket-upgrade, websocket-client, websocket-proxy, node-net, node-net-server, node-tls-connect, node-tls-server, node-tls-upgrade, node-http, node-http-server-timeouts, client-timeout-error, fetch, fetch-http2-client, fetch-session, fetch.tls, sql, valkey.
  • bun run rust:check-all: 12 of 12 targets before the last rebase, and CI built this commit on every target. test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts passes.
  • Not run on macOS, Windows or FreeBSD.

Self-review. Three rounds. The first moved the state from NewSocket into uSockets. The second replaced a remainder beside the 8-bit stamp with the 32-bit tick. The third found that idleTimeout: 0 relied on the 240-slot wrap (#45223 removed that since) and asked for the field rename and the tests above. Four of its 29 concerns are not done:

  • Move the fetch and WebSocket clients to set_timeout in this PR: it changes fetch timing (see "Not changed").
  • One-shot or idle: a maintainer's decision (see the question).
  • A clippy disallowed-methods line for the split helper.
  • A test that pins the split through the WebSocket client.

Considered and not chosen.

Earlier work. This replaces #34828, which a stale-PR job closed without review. The Socket.timeout JSDoc starts from #35935, which this PR supersedes.

Walkthrough

Socket timeout deadlines now use 32-bit group ticks instead of wrapped timestamps. HTTP and WebSocket callers use a separate method to route long timeouts. Documentation and regression tests describe and check timeout scheduling.

Changes

Socket Timeout Scheduling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tick-based timeout deadlines
packages/bun-usockets/src/internal/internal.h, packages/bun-usockets/src/libusockets.h, packages/bun-usockets/src/context.c, packages/bun-usockets/src/socket.c, packages/bun-usockets/src/loop.c, src/uws_sys/SocketGroup.rs
Socket and connecting-socket timeouts now store absolute tick deadlines. Initialization and timeout sweeps use the new tick fields, and the socket-group timestamp field and accessor are removed.
Timeout API routing and callers
src/uws_sys/socket.rs, src/http/*, src/http_jsc/websocket_client*, packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, docs/runtime/networking/fetch.mdx
The socket API separates regular timeout setting from long-timeout routing. HTTP and WebSocket timeout calls use the routing method. Documentation describes socket timeout behavior and attributes fetch idle-timeout rounding to the pool.
Timer-sweep testing and regression coverage
src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs, src/js/internal-for-testing.ts, src/uws_sys/Loop.rs, test/js/bun/net/socket-timeout-fixture.ts, test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts, test/js/web/websocket/websocket-proxy.test.ts
A testing API runs timer sweeps. New fixture and subprocess tests cover timeout scheduling and rearming for TCP, TLS, TLS upgrades, and WebSockets, including a proxied WebSocket handshake.

Status: ready for review.

How I reproduced it, with the public API only (310 s, loopback):

import net from "node:net";
const Ns = [1, 240, 241, 300], seen = {}, q = [...Ns], t0 = {};
const l = Bun.listen({ hostname: "127.0.0.1", port: 0, socket: {
  open(s) { s.data = q.shift(); t0[s.data] = performance.now(); s.timeout(s.data); },
  timeout(s) { seen[s.data] = Math.round((performance.now() - t0[s.data]) / 1000) + " s"; },
  data() {}, close() {}, error() {} } });
const keep = [];
for (const N of Ns) { const c = net.connect(l.port, "127.0.0.1"); c.on("error", () => {}); keep.push(c); await new Promise(r => c.on("connect", r)); await Bun.sleep(20); }
await Bun.sleep(310_000);
for (const N of Ns) console.log(`socket.timeout(${N}): timeout() ` + (seen[N] ? "after " + seen[N] : "NOT CALLED in 310 s"));
process.exit(seen[241] && seen[300] ? 0 : 1);
  • main (ed68082, release): socket.timeout(241) and socket.timeout(300) print NOT CALLED in 310 s.
  • This branch (062ac73, release): timeout() after 244 s and timeout() after 300 s.

The tests do not wait. They run the sweep by hand: bun bd test test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts -t "socket.timeout".

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the other callers of the re-purposed NewSocketHandler::set_timeout (MySQL, IPC, test-parallel Channel, named pipe, Listener.rs:780) — all pass 0 or 120, so the semantic change reaches only socket.timeout() from JS; the C side has no stale ->timeout reads left after the rename, and global_tick + ceil(seconds/4) cannot reach the UINT32_MAX sentinel for any JS-reachable i32 value. The PR also asks a maintainer whether the TCP timer should stay one-shot, which is a design call a human should settle.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewrites uSockets' short-timeout mechanism from a 240-slot wheel to an absolute u32 due tick, touching struct layouts mirrored in C and Rust, both sweep loops, the connecting-socket adopt/start paths, and splits the Rust set_timeout helper so only fetch/WebSocket clients keep the minute-wheel routing. No security-sensitive surface (auth, crypto, injection) is involved. Two inline findings are posted (a duplex-path overflow for very large timeouts and a test-convention nit), and the author explicitly leaves a one-shot-vs-idle-timer design question open, so a human look is warranted.

`socket.timeout(seconds)` above 240 seconds never called the `timeout`
handler of a `Bun.listen` or `Bun.connect` socket.
`NewSocketHandler::set_timeout` moved every value above 240 seconds to
the minute wheel of uSockets, and `NewSocket` has no `on_long_timeout`.
The 4-second wheel held 239 ticks (956 seconds) in an 8-bit slot.

`us_socket_t.timeout_tick` is now the `group->global_tick` at which the
timeout is due, in the pad before `group`, and the sweep compares with
`>=`. So `us_socket_timeout()` takes any length at the accuracy of the
4-second sweep, and `NewSocketHandler::set_timeout` no longer splits.
The fetch client and the WebSocket client pad their values for the
minute wheel, so they keep the split as `set_timeout_or_long_timeout`.
