Fixes #44577

Problem

  • A Bun.FetchSession pool can keep a TCP connection whose network path is gone (a Wi-Fi change moves the source address, no RST arrives). The kernel retransmits the request and nothing fails until the request timeout fires (5 minutes by default). With timeout: false, or with a streaming upload whose buffered writes keep re-arming that timer, the request waits for the kernel's retransmit limit (about 15 minutes on Linux).
  • The OS has a per-socket bound for this case (TCP_USER_TIMEOUT), but Bun never sets it and a session does not expose its sockets. HTTPClient::on_connect (src/http/lib.rs:2004) sets only SO_KEEPALIVE, and keepalive probes do not run while data is unacknowledged.

Fix

  • New opt-in option new Bun.FetchSession({ tcp: { userTimeout: ms } }). 0 or unset keeps the OS default. The constructor rejects a negative, NaN, non-finite or non-number value, and a value above 2147483647 (Linux reads the option as a signed int).
  • New uSockets primitive bsd_socket_user_timeout(fd, ms) beside bsd_socket_keepalive: Linux TCP_USER_TIMEOUT (ms), macOS TCP_RXT_CONNDROPTIME (seconds, rounded up), Windows TCP_MAXRTMS with a TCP_MAXRT fallback, FreeBSD TCP_MAXUNACKTIME (seconds, rounded up). Other platforms report ENOPROTOOPT.
  • The value travels in PoolOptions and is applied once per new TCP connection in HTTPClient::on_connect, as a sibling of the keepalive call. A pooled connection keeps it. If the OS refuses the option, the request rejects with the setsockopt errno (new SocketOptionRefused error) instead of running without the bound. Unix sockets and HTTP/3 are not affected.
  • Verified: test/js/web/fetch/fetch-session.test.ts (validation, fd read-back of the option on the pooled and the non-pooled connection, a peer that stops reading makes the request reject in about 1.2 s with userTimeout: 500, stock bun hangs, a refused setsockopt rejects with EPERM). Also fetch-tcp-keepalive.test.ts, bun-types.test.ts, bun run rust:check-all.

Background

  • PoolOptions (src/http/lib.rs) is the Copy struct a fetch session hands to every request. It names the pool partition (id) and the session's limits. It reaches HTTPClient unchanged.
  • on_connect runs once per new socket from the uSockets open callback. A socket taken from the pool skips it, so a socket option set there is set exactly once per connection.
  • This is a kernel-side bound on unacknowledged sent data, on the connection settings object. It is not a new fetch() timeout name: the request timeout (fetch: let an explicit timeout extend the socket idle deadline #33647) stays the deadline for a slow but live server, and userTimeout fails a dead path without shrinking that deadline.
  • Considered setting the option with libc::setsockopt directly in on_connect: same cost, but the macOS and Windows constants would be hand-declared and unchecked, and bun_http would gain its first target_os arms. The uSockets primitive gets the constants from the system headers and is reusable by the other TCP clients (WebSocket, Postgres, MySQL, Valkey). A socket.setUserTimeout() on Bun.connect was left out: that socket exposes fd, so bun:ffi can set the option today.

Downsides

  • On Linux, a user who sets userTimeout also aborts connections to a live peer that stops reading for that long (zero window). That is why the option is off by default. macOS and Windows bound retransmissions only.
  • On Linux, TCP_USER_TIMEOUT replaces the keepalive probe count as the abort rule for an idle connection: once max(60 s, userTimeout) passed without data, one unanswered probe resets it (today: 10). A live server that answers probes is not affected. A value above about 60 s also delays half-open detection past today's 70 s. Documented in the JSDoc.
  • Sessions that do not set the option: 0 new syscalls per connection and per request (LD_PRELOAD setsockopt count is identical to main). PoolOptions 16 to 24 bytes, HTTPClient 1680 to 1688, async_http::Options 456 to 464 (size_of). New C code: 130 bytes at -O2 (nm -S). Release binary delta not measured (no bloaty and no release toolchain in this environment).
Notes
  • Self-reviewed: 10 concerns raised, 9 addressed (i32 cap, a non-pooled connection the fd test can observe, Linux-only scope of the zero-window claim, the idle-timer context in the docs, helper fold, prettier). Rejected: a saturating cast instead of the RangeError. The explicit error tells the caller about a value the kernel would reject.
  • Review round 2: a refused setsockopt no longer degrades to the OS default in silence. The connection closes and the request rejects with the errno. Bun ships no build where the C fallback arm (ENOPROTOOPT) compiles, so the constructor does not gate on a target.
  • Measurements (debug build, Linux x64):
    • setsockopt per new connection: main 9 / PR without the option 9 / PR with userTimeout: 5000 10 (the extra one is IPPROTO_TCP, 18, 5000). Per pooled request: 0 new calls (200 requests, one connection, LD_PRELOAD shim).
    • Dead-peer reject with userTimeout: 500: 1435, 1185, 1450, 1182, 1145 ms (median 1185). With 2000: 2667, 2673, 2691 ms. Stock bun: still pending after 5 s. The extra time is the kernel's zero-window probe timer, which is where Linux checks the bound.
    • Instructions per pooled request: not measured (no perf, valgrind or strace here). The diff adds no code on the per-request path. The only new runtime code is a u32 compare in on_connect.
  • The request rejects with code: "ECONNRESET" today. The kernel reports ETIMEDOUT through SO_ERROR, but HTTPContext::on_close discards the errno and FetchTasklet maps every closed connection to ECONNRESET. Plumbing the errno through is a separate change.
  • Not in this PR: userTimeout on Bun.connect, net.connect, tls.connect. The Bun socket exposes its fd, so bun:ffi setsockopt works there today. Node declined the option on net.Socket (Add setUserTimeout function to sockets nodejs/node#7217, worker_threads: exit code 1 when a Worker dies from an unhandled rejection #34193, #52048).
  • The macOS and Windows arms of bsd_socket_user_timeout compile only in CI. The fd read-back test runs on macOS too (TCP_RXT_CONNDROPTIME, expects 3 for 2500 ms). There is no read-back test on Windows.
  • The behavioural test does not use expect(promise).rejects: when the promise never settles, that form outlives the test timeout and hangs the file (seen with stock bun). It awaits the promise with both handlers instead.

no test proof · iteration 1 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/web/fetch/fetch-session.test.ts

Adds a uSockets primitive that sets the TCP user timeout on a connected
socket (TCP_USER_TIMEOUT on Linux, TCP_RXT_CONNDROPTIME on macOS,
TCP_MAXRTMS or TCP_MAXRT on Windows). A FetchSession constructed with
{ tcp: { userTimeout: ms } } applies it once to every TCP connection it
opens, in HTTPClient::on_connect. Pooled reuse does not set it again.
…e the docs

Linux reads TCP_USER_TIMEOUT as a signed int and rejects larger values,
so the constructor rejects them too. The setsockopt result is logged
under the fetch debug scope instead of being dropped. The docs now say
what the option bounds (sent, unacknowledged data) and that the idle
timer already bounds the plain case. The fd read-back test observes the
keepalive: false connection while it is open.

Walkthrough

FetchSession now accepts a TCP user timeout in milliseconds and applies it to eligible TCP connections. The change adds platform-specific socket support, documents the option and its limits, and tests input validation, connection setup, pooling, and stalled uploads.

Changes

FetchSession TCP User Timeout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timeout option and validation
packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, src/runtime/webcore/fetch/FetchSession.rs, docs/runtime/networking/fetch.mdx, test/integration/bun-types/fixture/fetch.ts, test/js/web/fetch/fetch-session.test.ts
Adds tcp.userTimeout to the FetchSession type and parses finite, non-negative values up to 2147483647 milliseconds. Updates the shared numeric validator and documents the option's platform behavior and limits. Type fixtures and tests cover accepted and rejected values.
Platform socket timeout support
packages/bun-usockets/src/bsd.c, packages/bun-usockets/src/internal/networking/bsd.h, packages/bun-usockets/src/libusockets.h, packages/bun-usockets/src/socket.c, src/uws_sys/us_socket_t.rs, src/uws_sys/socket.rs
Adds platform-specific socket timeout configuration and C and Rust interfaces that forward the timeout in milliseconds.
HTTP connection setup and error handling
src/http/lib.rs, src/http/error.rs, src/runtime/webcore/fetch/FetchSession.rs, src/runtime/webcore/fetch/FetchTasklet.rs, test/js/web/fetch/fetch-session.test.ts
Adds the timeout to pool options and applies it on eligible connections when they open, independently of keepalive. A rejected socket option fails the request with the platform error. Tests cover pooled and non-pooled connections, option failure, and a stalled upload on Linux.

Explanation

Issue #44577 requires tcp.userTimeout for FetchSession and for net.connect, tls.connect, and Bun.connect, plus socket.setUserTimeout(). The PR implements the FetchSession option, validation, connection setup, platform primitive, refusal handling, and tests. It does not expose the option or setter on the requested socket APIs. Issue #44577 also requires ETIMEDOUT when the kernel aborts a connection. The PR still reports ECONNRESET and defers errno propagation.

Resolution

Implement and test the requested socket API options and setters. Propagate kernel timeout failures as ETIMEDOUT for the affected APIs and FetchSession, or revise the active issue requirements to define this narrower scope.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new us_socket_user_timeout extern in src/uws_sys/us_socket_t.rs against the C definition (c_uint/c_int match the unsigned int/int signature), and the keepAlive.idleTimeout migration to finite_number with allow_zero = false, which preserves the previous > 0 check and the "positive number" error text.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a tcp.userTimeout option to Bun.FetchSession across uSockets C, Rust FFI wrappers, the HTTP client open path, the option parser, types, docs and tests; it touches socket configuration but no auth, crypto or input-parsing surface beyond numeric option validation. Two confirmed findings on the Linux keepalive interaction and the silently-logged setsockopt failure are posted inline, so a human look is already indicated; this note only records the FFI signature and refactor checks that were ruled out.

The option is an explicit request. When setsockopt refuses it, the
connection is closed and the request rejects with the errno
(SocketOptionRefused) instead of running without the bound. The docs
now state the Linux keepalive interaction: the value replaces the probe
count as the abort rule for an idle connection.

The new commit addresses the errno-propagation point from my earlier review: a refused setsockopt now fails the request through SocketOptionRefused with the errno in connect_errno. Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the -9 that NewSocketHandler::set_user_timeout returns for a non-connected socket landing in connect_errno — SystemErrno::init takes the absolute value, so it surfaces as EBADF rather than an unnamed code.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a tcp.userTimeout option to Bun.FetchSession across the uSockets C layer (bsd.c/socket.c), the Rust FFI wrappers (us_socket_t.rs, uws_sys/socket.rs), HTTPClient::on_connect, a new http::Error variant mapped in FetchTasklet, option parsing in FetchSession.rs, types, docs and a test. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the sensitive part is socket-option error handling on the connect path. A confirmed platform-coverage finding remains posted inline and my earlier keepalive-interaction comment is not changed by the new commit, so this is not an approval.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

The latest push adds the FreeBSD TCP_MAXUNACKTIME arm in packages/bun-usockets/src/bsd.c, and the refused-setsockopt path now fails the request through SocketOptionRefused with the errno in connect_errno, so the two platform/fail-loud points from earlier rounds are covered by the code as it stands.

Beyond the inline test-concurrency nit, I also checked: the early close_and_fail in on_connect (src/http/lib.rs:2016) follows the same shape as the existing HTTP2Unsupported exit in on_open, so no new teardown path; a bounded socket cannot be handed to a session without the option because PoolOptions.id partitions the pool per session; and the positive errno / WSA code returned by bsd_socket_user_timeout goes through the same connect_errno_name channel that FailedToOpenSocket already uses, so the code name on the rejection is consistent. The macOS and Windows arms of the C function are only compiled in CI, so a human glance at those two arms after a green run is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a tcp.userTimeout option to Bun.FetchSession: a new uSockets C primitive with Linux/Darwin/FreeBSD/Windows arms, Rust FFI plumbing, a user_timeout_ms field on PoolOptions applied once per new TCP connection in on_connect, a new SocketOptionRefused http error, option parsing with range validation in FetchSession.rs, types, docs and three new tests. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the security-adjacent point is pool partitioning, and the per-session pool id keeps a bounded socket from being reused by a session that did not ask for it. Findings are limited to a test-structure nit, but the platform-gated C arms for macOS and Windows are not type-checked locally and the Linux keepalive interplay was resolved by documenting rather than changing behavior, which is a maintainer judgment call, so a human look is warranted rather than an approval.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert pooled descriptor reuse.

The second request only checks the global count of matching descriptors. If it reconnects and applies the option to the replacement socket, after_pooled remains 1 and the test passes without exercising pool reuse. Retain the first option-bearing descriptor and assert that it remains present after the second request.
