Problem

  • winston's format.metadata() throws TypeError: Unable to delete property. on an fs error, and err-code returns a stand-in object. Node v26.3.0 does neither.
  • The cause is PropertyAttribute::DontDelete on each putDirect in systemErrorToErrorInstance and SystemError__toErrorInstanceWithInfoObject (src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:2802, :2892). S3Error and SQLiteError set the flag too.

Fix

  • Pass attributes 0 at the 14 puts. Remove the duplicate info.code put. S3Error and SQLiteError drop only DontDelete.
  • A source lint (its own commit) fails on a DontDelete put on a native error: 20 sites on main, 0 here.
  • Verified: test/js/node/errors/system-error-configurable.test.ts (Node: 10 pass, Bun 1.4.3: 10 fail) and test/js/bun/util/error-name-preservation.test.ts (7 new, all fail on 1.4.3).
  • Self-reviewed: 19 concerns raised, 16 addressed. Rejected: narrowing to bindings.cpp (winston also throws on SQLiteError and S3Error) and it.failing rows (a follow-up owns the remaining gaps).

Background

  • putDirect with attributes 0 defines what a JS assignment defines. DontDelete makes the property non-configurable, which JS cannot undo.
  • systemErrorToErrorInstance builds the errors of node:fs, child_process, dns, Bun.file, Bun.write, Bun.spawn and fetch. The other builds ERR_SYSTEM_ERROR for node:os.
  • Considered a per-caller flag that keeps Bun-native errors as they are: shared Rust code does not know its caller, and winston still throws on them.

Downsides

  • Bun-native errors change too. REVIEW.md forbids a change to a Bun-native default for Node compatibility, so a maintainer must sign off.
  • ERR_SYSTEM_ERROR still differs from Node: info is writable, errno and syscall do not alias it, code is not enumerable (node errors: make code an own enumerable property on ERR_* errors and warnings #41737).
  • No cost found. Release text is 256 bytes smaller, and an errno error runs the same 3067 instructions.
Notes

Source. No user reported this. An automated check found that delete err.path throws. The flag dates from d3a93d5 (2022-01-19). #35926 made the same 15 drops in bindings.cpp. Its author closed it as a scope cut in favor of #41737, and no maintainer commented on either PR. The three SQLiteError puts were written with DontDelete | ReadOnly in #7906.

Node. Every own property of a system error is configurable in Node v26.3.0:

winston 3.19.0 (logform 2.7.0). metadata.js L11-L15 runs Object.keys(info) and then delete info[key] in strict mode.

const fs = require("node:fs"), os = require("node:os"), path = require("node:path");
const { Writable } = require("node:stream");
const winston = require("winston");
const from = path.join(os.tmpdir(), "customer-4711");
let out = "";
const stream = new Writable({ write(c, _e, cb) { out += c; cb(); } });
const logger = winston.createLogger({
  format: winston.format.combine(winston.format.metadata(), winston.format.json()),
  transports: [new winston.transports.Stream({ stream })],
});
let err;
try { fs.renameSync(from, from + "-moved"); } catch (e) { err = e; }
try {
  logger.error(err);
  setImmediate(() => setImmediate(() => console.log("logged:", out.trim())));
} catch (x) {
  console.log("logger.error(fsErr) THREW:", x.name + ": " + x.message);
}
Node v26.3.0   logged: {"level":"error","message":"ENOENT: no such file or directory, rename '/tmp/customer-4711' -> '/tmp/customer-4711-moved'","metadata":{"code":"ENOENT","dest":"/tmp/customer-4711-moved","errno":-2,"path":"/tmp/customer-4711","syscall":"rename"}}
Bun 1.4.3 logger.error(fsErr) THREW: TypeError: Unable to delete property.
main a407eae logger.error(fsErr) THREW: TypeError: Unable to delete property.
this PR logged: (the same line as Node)

On a release build of main (a407eae) the same logger.error(err) also throws for a SQLiteError, for an S3Error and for the os.setPriority(-1, 0) error. It logs all three with this PR.

err-code 2.0.3. index.js L5-L9 runs Object.defineProperty(err, key, { value, enumerable: true, configurable: true }). When that throws, it returns a new object.

const errcode = require("err-code");
let err;
try { fs.renameSync(from, from + "-moved"); } catch (e) { err = e; }
const wrapped = errcode(err, "ERR_NOT_FOUND", { detail: 1 });
console.log(wrapped === err, require("node:util").types.isNativeError(wrapped), "syscall" in wrapped);

A probe of 16 error sources (fs sync, callback and promise forms, child_process, process.chdir, os, Bun.file, Bun.write) shows a non-configurable property on 17 of 18 lines with Bun 1.4.3 and on 0 with this PR.

Measurements. Release builds of a407eae with and without the three source files of this PR, same toolchain.

  • release binary text: 106006447 to 106006191 bytes, 256 fewer (size). The stripped file stays at 106178312 bytes.
  • errno emitter: 1452 bytes, 7 puts (was 1473, 7). info emitter: 3246 bytes, 9 puts, 5 JSString::create (was 3460, 10, 6). From nm -S and objdump -d.
  • instructions per errno emitter call: 3067 vs 3067. Per ERR_SYSTEM_ERROR emitter call: 9417 vs 9195. Counted with gdb stepi from the entry of the function to its return. perf and valgrind are not installed on the machine.
  • cells per 1000 fs errors: Error 999, string 3996, Structure 0, Object 1, unchanged. Per 1000 ERR_SYSTEM_ERROR: Error 999, Structure 6997, string 5994, Object 1000, unchanged (bun:jsc heapStats).
  • lint: 20 sites flagged on main, 0 on this PR. New tests that fail on Bun 1.4.3: 17 of 17. Existing pinned tests changed: 0.

Other suites. With the debug build: test/js/node/os/os.test.js, test/js/bun/test/stack.test.ts (pins the key order), test/js/node/errors/, test/js/bun/util/inspect-error.test.js, test/js/bun/s3/s3.test.ts, and test/js/node/test/parallel/test-os-process-priority.js. fs.test.ts, child_process.test.ts and sqlite.test.js give the same pass and fail sets on release builds with and without the change.

Open PRs that touch the same statements.

Not in this PR.

  • The rest of Node's SystemError shape for ERR_SYSTEM_ERROR (info not writable, errno and syscall as accessors onto info). A follow-up owns it.
  • Key order. Bun gives code, path, dest, fd, syscall, hostname, errno. Node gives errno, code, syscall, path, dest. stack.test.ts pins the order of Bun.
  • fd, which only Bun sets.
  • Prototype members of generated classes. Their configurable option is a different mechanism.

If the Bun-native part is not wanted. Drop the lint commit, restore S3Error.cpp and JSSQLStatement.cpp, and delete the two tests. winston then still throws on SQLiteError and S3Error. If only the standing rule is not wanted, drop the lint commit alone.

Rejected review concerns.

  • Cut the PR to bindings.cpp: 7 of the errors that fail in winston are SQLiteError and S3Error, and the shared function changes Bun.file, Bun.write, Bun.spawn and fetch errors at any scope.
  • it.failing rows in os.test.js for the ERR_SYSTEM_ERROR gaps: they assert behavior that this PR does not change. The header of the new test file records the gaps.

`systemErrorToErrorInstance` and `SystemError__toErrorInstanceWithInfoObject`
passed `PropertyAttribute::DontDelete` to each `putDirect`. So `code`,
`errno`, `syscall`, `path`, `dest`, `fd`, `hostname` and `info` were not
configurable. `delete err.path` threw `TypeError: Unable to delete
property.` in strict mode, and `Object.defineProperty(err, "code", ...)`
threw too. Node leaves these properties configurable.

Pass attributes 0 at those 14 puts. Remove the second `info.code` put, which
wrote the same value again. `S3Error` and `SQLiteError` drop `DontDelete`
too, and keep `DontEnum` and `ReadOnly`.
The lint fails when a `putDirect` on an error that native code just created,
or on a plain object that it attaches to that error, passes
`PropertyAttribute::DontDelete`.

Status: ready for review.

Reproduced on Bun 1.4.3 and on a release build of main (a407eae). logger.error(err) with winston 3.19.0 format.metadata() throws TypeError: Unable to delete property. for an error from fs.renameSync, and err-code 2.0.3 returns a stand-in object. Node v26.3.0 does neither.

The 17 new tests fail on Bun 1.4.3 and pass with the debug build of this branch. test/js/node/errors/system-error-configurable.test.ts passes unchanged under node --test.

PR: #45444

Use an OS-assigned port, then close the listener before each request.

Both cited endpoints use hardcoded port 1, which violates the test guideline. The fetch case requires a rejected connection to produce the intended system error. The S3 case relies on the endpoint having no listener to produce the intended S3Error. Do not leave the test server running, because fetch can then succeed instead of producing an error.

🟡 (optional) A future unrelated PR can be blocked by a false lint failure because the new source lint merges function bodies that are not closed by a column-0 brace. test/internal/source-lints/error-property-dont-delete.test.ts:27 splits on /^}/m, so every member function of a class or of an indented namespace lands in one body; a result = createError( in one method and a result->putDirect(..., DontDelete) on an unrelated result in another are then reported as a violation at line 39-41. Fix: scope variable tracking to the enclosing function regardless of indentation (match the function signature, or track by brace depth), and strip /* */ comments as well as // ones.

Why this was flagged

The lint at test/internal/source-lints/error-property-dont-delete.test.ts:27 treats text between two column-0 } lines as one function. Bun's C++ bindings contain classes with inline member functions and indented namespace bodies, where } closes a method at column 4, so several methods share one scan body. In that body errors (line 28) is a set of bare variable names; puts (line 31) matches every name->putDirect(...) on those names, with no check that it is the same variable. A method that names an error result and a sibling method that puts a DontDelete property on a plain object also named result fails the CI job at line 99 for a PR that touched neither errors nor attributes. Line 23 strips only // comments, so a /* */ block mentioning putDirect with DontDelete trips it the same way. The finders let it go as theoretical and too_minor because no such pair exists today; the population is every future C++ PR that is gated by source-lints.yml on src/**/*.cpp. Remedy: bound the scan to the real enclosing function.

Verification: Triggers only when a future edit adds a <name>->putDirect(..., DontDelete) on a non-error variable with the same name as an error variable in the same column-0-brace-delimited region; no current instance, so nothing breaks at merge time. test/internal/source-lints/error-property-dont-delete.test.ts:27 splits on /^}/m; line 39 matches any putDirect whose receiver name is in that set, with no scope check.
