Problem

  • await server.stop() on an HTTP/3 server resolves while a QUIC connection drains and the UDP socket is bound. The next Bun.serve on that port throws Failed to listen on UDP port N for HTTP/3, and a process that ends there cuts the response in flight.
  • stop_listening took h3_listener (src/runtime/server/mod.rs:1727), so is_closed() (mod.rs:1653) had no HTTP/3 term.

Fix

  • quic.c reports, after the close(2), when a context has no UDP socket and no connection left (us_quic_socket_context_on_released). is_closed() reads that, and the report runs deinit_if_we_can().
  • NewServer keeps the stopped listener handle, so stop(true) after stop() reaches QUIC. quic.c and one lsquic patch close the connections that a stop or a closed UDP socket leaves.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts (18 new tests, 14 fail on main), the fetch HTTP/3 suites, bun-server, node:quic.
  • Self-reviewed: 31 concerns raised, 25 addressed. Left out (Notes): the Bun.serve: free a gracefully stopped server at VM teardown #37500 listener leak, reusePort, three test nits.

Background

  • QUIC connections share the server's UDP socket. A graceful stop keeps it until peers acknowledge responses in flight.
  • is_closed() gates the stop() promise and the event-loop ref.
  • US_FAULT_CHECK (ASAN builds) fails a bsd_* call for a test, now also bsd_recvmmsg.
  • Considered a connection count in NewServer: two calls per connection, and the promise precedes the fd close. A docs change leaves the truncation.

Downsides

  • await server.stop() lasts the QUIC drain: +0.65 ms median with a request in flight, idleTimeout (10.0 s default) when the peer vanished. stop(true) ends it.
  • Size: +1216 bytes of text, NewServer +8 bytes. Each QUIC send batch runs 2 more instructions.
Notes

Measured on release builds of the merge base 5f5799e and of this branch, same flags, Linux x64, loopback.

  • deinit_if_we_can on a listening server: 24 / 22 instructions TLS (base 43 / 22), 41 / 22 plain (base 41 / 22). The first number is a completion that leaves no pending request. The new term needs a call, so the compiler now branches out at has_listener().
  • released callback: 0 hits over 100 connections while listening, 1 per stopped server.
  • us_quic_on_conn_closed: -5 instructions with connections left, +3 at zero (+1 for the fetch client, which registers no hook). us_quic_udp_on_close: +8, once per UDP socket. Engine leave, which runs on each QUIC tick of a server or the fetch client: 5 instructions (base 29). One flag test replaces the walk over the listeners.
  • us_quic_packets_out: 68 of its own instructions for a batch of one datagram (base 66), 25 for each further datagram in both. The 2 are jumps from a changed block layout. The function is 54 bytes smaller.
  • release binary: +1216 bytes of text. us_quic_socket_context_s +8 (16984 to 16992), Http3ContextData +16, NewServer +8 (2176 to 2184).
  • new code: 0 allocator call edges, 0 added task enqueues.
  • rebind after await stop(): 0 of 20 throw (base 20 of 20). Socket fds at the continuation: 1 (base 2).
  • await stop(), 30 interleaved runs each, median: no connection +0.01 ms, idle connection +0.01 ms, connection with no request yet +0.72 ms, request in flight +0.65 ms (p95 1.68 ms), vanished peer 10.0 s (idleTimeout 10, base 0.1 ms). A/A noise 0.01 ms.
  • UDP port bound after stop() then stop(true) with a parked request: 0 of 10 (base 10 of 10). Truncated 1 MB bodies when the process ends after await stop(): 0 of 20 (base 20 of 20).
  • stop() after a receive error closed the UDP socket, debug build, 7 runs with 1, 40 and 100 connections: 0.7 to 10.6 ms. Without the last commit: 10.0 s with one connection.

Where the report can come from. Seven call sites close a QUIC UDP socket: five in quic.c and the loop's close on a socket error (loop.c). Only two of them imply that no connection is left. So quic.c reports from both ends, us_quic_udp_on_close and us_quic_on_conn_closed, and only when both the socket and the last connection are gone. The report can run inside lsquic_engine_process_conns. deinit_if_we_can() reads cells and queues tasks, it does not enter the engine. us_quic_socket_context_free drops the hook first.

Abrupt stops. The promise of stop(true) now also waits for the last connection, so a connection that an abrupt close left behind would hold it. Three cases did on the first commit of this branch, where the self-review measured them: a connection accepted later in the same engine tick as stop(true) in a handler (10.5 s), a second connection when a same-port Bun.serve in the handler took the fd (8 to 9 s, and no settle at all without something else holding the loop), and stop(true) from inside the engine after a graceful stop (27 s). us_quic_listen_socket_close under process_conns only marks the connections. The engine half (abort again, tick, flush) now runs when the engine leaves, through one context flag, also when the fd is already gone. All three settle in 5 to 37 ms on the debug build.

A UDP socket that closes under connections. The loop closes a QUIC UDP socket whose receive fails (loop.c). Its connections then have no socket. The first push left them to the idle timeout, and a graceful stop() waited for it (10.0 s). us_quic_udp_on_close now closes the connections when the last socket goes, at once or when the engine leaves, so the server does not need to learn of the close. That alone was not enough. us_quic_packets_out reported a closed socket as backpressure, and lsquic frees a closed connection only after a send attempt, one batch per attempt: 40 connections opened one at a time took 4.0 s. A datagram with no socket now counts as sent, like one the kernel refuses. The fetch HTTP/3 client shares that function. Read in the code, not measured: a client connection on a closed socket paused the whole client engine for up to one second per attempt, and now its datagrams are dropped until its timeout ends it.

lsquic patch. ietf_full_conn_ci_going_away writes no GOAWAY for a server connection with no request yet, and skipped the call that makes the connection tickable. Its CONNECTION_CLOSE waited for the next alarm (0.2 to 4.4 s on the first commit of this branch). The patch adds that call, and stop() then closes such a connection before it returns.

Also changed by the same predicate:

  • A repeated stop() during the drain returns the pending promise, not a fresh resolved one.
  • The loop ref stays until the release, also for a server with http1: false.
  • The JS wrapper stays strong until the release, so the h3_app.is_some() exemption in the js_value_for_dispatch debug assertion is gone. A stopped server that nothing references is not finalized in the middle of a drain.
  • The close guards in stop_listening restore the previous value of deinit_running. A nested stop() from a close callback could clear the guard that on_h3_released relies on.

Of the 18 new tests, two pass on main and guard this change: the stop with no connection, and the settle of the promise after a rebind inside a handler. The two fault-injection rows need the hook in bsd_recvmmsg, so on main they cannot close the socket. With the hook, both rows fail without the check in us_quic_udp_on_close, and the 32-connection row fails without the change in us_quic_packets_out. They fail on the promise state, not on a timeout.

Left as they are:

  • server.stop() then Bun.serve({ port }) in one turn with a request in flight still throws on HTTP/3. The drain needs the socket. TCP binds.
  • With http1 on, that failed attempt leaves its TCP listener bound, and a debug build aborts on group->head_listen_sockets == NULL. This is a separate defect of the failed UDP bind arm in listen(). Bun.serve: free a gracefully stopped server at VM teardown #37500 covers it. server: close TCP listener when H3 UDP bind fails #32539 had a one-hunk fix and was closed as stale.
  • closeIdleConnections() does not close or count QUIC connections.
  • A client whose process ends sends no CONNECTION_CLOSE, and the fetch HTTP/3 client can lose its last ACK there. The server sees a vanished peer: a Bun client that exited after a 1 MB response held the promise for idleTimeout in 1 of 20 stops.
  • Not tested: reusePort with several processes on one UDP port. The kernel picks the socket per datagram, so a live flow can reach another process while a server drains.
  • With idleTimeout: 0 quic.c keeps the default idle timeout of lsquic (30 s), which then bounds the drain. Read in the code, not measured.
  • After the loop closes the UDP socket on a receive error, the server stays up without HTTP/3. Nothing reports the close and nothing binds a new socket.
  • Review concerns left out: no test reaches the processing arm of the new check in us_quic_udp_on_close with abort_pending clear. The probe loop of the fault-injection test spins until the test timeout when the fault does not fire. The recvmsg fault rule now also covers UDP receives, where the zero action means no datagram and not end of stream.

Suites run on the debug build: serve-http3.test.ts (97), fetch-http3-client (67), fetch-http3-adversarial (27), fetch-http3-cold-post (2), fetch-http3-syscall-fault (7), serve-http2-lifecycle (23), serve-protocols (20), bun-server (82), bun-serve-args (60), module-graph-gc (37), test/js/node/quic (22), and the 235 test-quic-* node tests (232 pass, 2 need node:stream/iter, 1 asserts a loopback RTT under 10 ms and fails on the debug build only). serve-http3.test.ts also passes on the release build (94 pass, 3 skips that need an ASAN build). Also run after the last commit: serve-syscall-fault (5), socket-fault-injection (17), udp_socket (230), dgram (62). Windows and macOS were not run.

…IC connection are gone

A graceful stop() keeps the HTTP/3 UDP socket open for the connections
that still have a response to deliver. The server forgot its HTTP/3
listener at that point, so is_closed() was true as soon as the last
request completed. The stop() promise resolved, and the loop ref was
dropped, while a QUIC connection and the bound UDP port were still
there.

quic.c now reports once when a context has no open UDP socket and no
connection left (us_quic_socket_context_on_released). The report comes
after the close(2). NewServer keeps the stopped listener handle,
is_closed() asks quic.c through it, and the report runs
deinit_if_we_can().

The kept handle also lets stop(true), dispose and the abort handle
reach the QUIC connections that an earlier graceful stop left open.
…y connection with no request

The stop() promise now waits for the last QUIC connection, so a
connection that an abrupt or graceful stop left behind holds it.

- us_quic_listen_socket_close under process_conns only marked the
connections. The engine half (abort, tick, flush) now runs when the
engine leaves, also for a listener whose fd a same-port bind took,
and it aborts again: a connection accepted later in the same tick or
one that is already going away is not queued otherwise.
- stop(true) aborts the connections that are left when the fd is
  already gone.
- lsquic: ci_going_away() did not make a server connection tickable
when it had not carried a request, so its CONNECTION_CLOSE waited
  for the next alarm.
- NewServer: the close guards in stop_listening restore the previous
value, so a nested stop cannot clear the guard that on_h3_released
  relies on.

Walkthrough

The changes update QUIC and HTTP/3 shutdown behavior, expose listener release state and callbacks to the runtime, and retain stopped HTTP/3 listeners during graceful draining. New tests cover shutdown, connection draining, port release, receive errors, and in-flight responses.

Changes

HTTP/3 shutdown

Layer / File(s) Summary
QUIC shutdown and release lifecycle
packages/bun-usockets/src/bsd.c, packages/bun-usockets/src/quic.c, packages/bun-usockets/src/quic.h, patches/lsquic/going-away-tickable.patch, scripts/build/deps/lsquic.ts
QUIC listener closure now aborts or defers connection aborts and handles missing UDP sockets without stopping packet output with EBADF. The context exposes release state and a release callback. Receive-error fault injection and an LSQUIC tick scheduling patch are added.
HTTP/3 release callback API
packages/bun-uws/src/Http3App.h, packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Context.h, packages/bun-uws/src/Http3ContextData.h, src/uws_sys/h3.rs, src/uws_sys/libuwsockets_h3.cpp
HTTP/3 context data stores the release callback and user pointer. C++ and Rust bindings expose callback registration and listener release state.
Server drain and deinitialization
src/runtime/server/mod.rs
NewServer retains a stopped H3 listener during graceful draining. Server closure checks include H3 transport release, and the H3 release callback triggers a deinitialization check. Synchronous close guards restore their prior state.
Shutdown and release tests
test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts
Tests cover graceful and abrupt stop, port rebinding, in-flight responses, peer loss, receive errors, garbage collection, and process exit.

Status for #45419.

How the problem was reproduced, on a release build of main 5f5799e:

  • A request is in flight on Bun.serve({ tls, http3: true }). The script calls server.stop(), lets the handler answer, awaits the promise, and calls Bun.serve on the same port in the next statement. It throws Failed to listen on UDP port N for HTTP/3 in 20 of 20 runs.
  • The same script with a 1 MB response, where the process ends after the await: the client does not get the body in 20 of 20 runs.

With this branch both are 0 of 20. The tests are in test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts.

CI on 52db218 (build 127247): 180 of 181 jobs passed. The red job is one of the two darwin aarch64 - test-bun shards. It stopped before it ran a test: buildkite-agent artifact download timed out after 120s for step 'darwin-aarch64-build-bun'. The other darwin aarch64 shard and both darwin x64 shards passed. Build 127223 failed the same way on the other shard. A retry of that job is enough. The diff is ready for review.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the &mut Self formed in on_h3_released: every Rust frame that can reach it while holding &mut self (the H3 close calls in stop_listening, deinit_if_we_can) sets deinit_running first, and h3::App::destroy runs after quic.c nulls the hook, so the early return covers them. I also traced abort_pending/close_pending: they are only set together under processing, and us_quic_after_engine_call consumes both in one place, so a pending fd close cannot be stranded by the move of finish_pending_closes under the abort_pending test.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewires HTTP/3 server teardown across quic.c, the uWS/Rust FFI layer, NewServer's stop/deinit state machine and an lsquic patch, with no auth/crypto/injection surface. The confirmed stall after a loop-side UDP error-close, plus the size and lifecycle complexity of the C/Rust interplay, mean a human should still review; the aliasing and pending-flag concerns were examined and ruled out from the code.

The event loop closes a QUIC UDP socket whose receive fails. The
connections of that server then had no socket left, and server.stop()
waited for them until the idle timeout. us_quic_udp_on_close now closes
them, at once or when the engine leaves.

us_quic_packets_out counts a datagram whose socket has closed as sent.
It reported backpressure, so lsquic freed a closed connection only after
a send attempt, one batch per attempt.

bsd_recvmmsg takes the recvmsg fault rule, so a test can fail a UDP
receive. The two in-process servers of the new stop() tests are disposed
on every path, and the probe bind only tolerates EADDRINUSE.

I re-reviewed after f312a34 and found no new bugs; the three points from my earlier pass (stop() stalling after a UDP receive error, the two undisposed in-process servers, the probe bind's catch-all) are addressed by that commit. Because this reworks QUIC teardown ordering across quic.c, unsafe Rust FFI callbacks and an lsquic patch, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The on_released report: it is nulled in us_quic_socket_context_free before any fd/conn teardown, and H3App::~H3App destructs Http3ContextData before that free, so the C++ trampoline never reads a dead onReleased.
  • on_h3_released reaching deinit_if_we_can from inside process_conns: every Rust frame that holds &mut self across an H3 close call now sets/restores deinit_running, and the body only reads cells, unrefs and queues tasks.
  • abort_pending through all three setters (listen_socket_close under processing, udp_on_close under processing, release_pending_port) and its single consumer in us_quic_after_engine_call; the nested after_engine_call from us_quic_abort_conns is bounded since the flag is cleared first.
  • The us_poll_change null-guard removal in us_quic_packets_out: both loop variants only reach sent < n via a break that already passed the ls->udp check.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches QUIC/HTTP3 server shutdown in packages/bun-usockets/src/quic.c, the uWS H3 wrapper, src/runtime/server/mod.rs (new h3_stopped_listener field, an extern "C" callback forming &mut Self from a raw pointer, is_closed gating), a new lsquic patch, and 18 new tests; no security-sensitive surface (auth, crypto validation, injection) is involved. The latest commit addresses all three inline comments from the prior review and no new defects were found, but the change is ~700 lines of lifecycle-ordering work across C, C++, unsafe Rust and a vendored-dependency patch, which is too complex to approve without a human.
