Problem

  • A script started with Module.runMain(path) that throws, rejects a top-level await, or fails to parse or resolve exits 0 with empty stderr. Node exits 1.
  • jsFunctionRunMain (NodeModuleModule.cpp:804) gave the load promise to set_override_module_run_main_promise (hw_exports.rs:108), which dropped it unless the entry point's slot was empty. JSC marks it handled, so nobody reported it.
  • No user reported it. Corepack and istanbul cover make this call.

Fix

Background

  • pending_internal_promise holds the entry point's promise. Run::start, a Worker and --hot report its rejection.
  • A preload can replace Module.runMain. reload_entry_point calls it and takes its first load.
  • Considered a follower promise: the rejection tracker exits 0 under --unhandled-rejections=none. Notes asks a maintainer about running the script inside the call, like Node.

Downsides

  • Per call the entry point does not take: +2 cells until the load settles, +1 microtask. .text grows 1,280 bytes.
  • Unlike Node, the script runs after the call returns: the caller cannot catch its failure.
  • Still silent: a script behind require.main === module, and Module.runMain() with no argument (node:module: default runMain() argument to process.argv[1] #41147 must land after this). Also a --hot reload under --unhandled-rejections=none, like the entry point.
Notes

Question for a maintainer, before the merge

Should a script that has no top-level await run inside the Module.runMain call, as the main module?

Second question: #43927 gives Bun__ModuleGraph__handleUnhandledRejection the promise as a parameter and replaces onError. Which handler of a graph gets a Module.runMain failure, and which promise?

Origin and reach

  • There is no GitHub issue and no user report. A fuzzing run found the silent exit.
  • Callers that pass a path get the fix. Corepack 0.36.0: process.nextTick(Module.runMain, binPath) (dist/lib/corepack.cjs:13592). istanbul 0.4.5: Module.runMain(cmd, null, true) (lib/command/common/run-with-cover.js:122). Both shapes are tests.
  • ts-node 10.9.2 (dist/bin.js:466) and spawn-wrap 3.0.0 (shim.js:153) call Module.runMain() with no argument. That call still throws before the new code.
  • node:module: default runMain() argument to process.argv[1] #41147 makes the call with no argument run process.argv[1]. It must land after this PR. Alone it turns the error that those launchers get today into a silent exit 0 for a script that fails.

Repro

// wrapper.cjs
require("node:module").runMain(require("node:path").resolve(process.argv[2]));

bun wrapper.cjs <script> for six scripts (throw in a .cjs, throw in an .mjs, await Promise.reject(...), const x = ;, import "./missing.mjs", require("./missing.cjs")):

exit code stderr
main (release build) 0 for all six empty
this PR 1 for all six the error, once
Node v26.3.0 and v26.12.0 1 for all six the error

Who reports a load that Module.runMain(key) starts

One call after the load decides it: Bun__VirtualMachine__entryPointTakesRunMain(vm, key, promise).

  • The entry point, when reload_entry_point is calling a Module.runMain that a preload set and has no promise yet. It keeps the first promise it gets. If a load that started inside this one gave its promise first (a plugin's onLoad that calls Module.runMain), Module.runMain reports this one.
  • The entry point, when no preload set a Module.runMain and the call is for the entry point's own module. The call joins or starts the load and adds no reporter, because the VM loads bun:main itself and reports it. The key is compared with bun:main and with the path of the entry point, and the name that the caller gave is compared with that path too. The last one is for Bun run as node: there the path is as typed (no extension added, no symlink followed), and process.argv[1] is that same string.
  • Module.runMain in every other case. The call always joins the load, also when an import() or a require() started it. The reaction calls vm.uncaught_rejection(global, reason). A Bun.ModuleGraph whose code started the script takes the failure through its onError, with the kind unhandledRejection. Without such a graph the call is vm.uncaught_exception(global, reason, true), as for the entry point.
  • With --watch or --hot, the reaction does the same until the first beforeExit. After that, an uncaught exception that no listener takes ends the process, and a watcher has to stay. So the reaction rethrows, and the rejection tracker reports the failure, as report_exception_in_hot_reloaded_module_if_needed does for an entry point that fails after a reload. --watch starts a new process for each change, so each run reports like a plain run. A --hot reload follows --unhandled-rejections, like the entry point: none prints nothing, and strict or throw end the process.

What a program sees (debug builds of main and of this PR, Node v26.3.0)

Flow matrix, 132 cells (CommonJS and ES module callers, a timer, -e, a Worker, preload bodies, preload overrides that call the original at once, after an await, from a timer, or twice, an entry point that calls it for itself, a second call, a module that require() loaded, an import in flight, a text import of the script, a module that a failed graph never ran):

  • Of the 32 cells without a failing script, none changes.
  • 100 cells have a script that fails. Main reports nothing in 61 of them. This PR reports once in 84, more than once in 12, and nothing in 4.
  • The 4 silent cells, as on main: a preload starts the entry point itself and then sets a Module.runMain that starts nothing, or then throws while a listener keeps the process running. The VM does not load the entry point in these two cases, so nobody looks at the load that the preload started.
  • The 12 cells with more than one report: a second call after the script failed reports it again (2 cells, as Node does for an ES module), and two flows print one failure twice (10 cells). The two flows: a preload's Module.runMain calls the original twice for the entry point, and a module calls it for a later import of the graph that is running. Node prints once, because its first report ends the process. In Bun the run ends after the tick. An import() of the script that nothing handles, together with the call, prints twice for the same reason.
  • Not in the matrix: run as node with a path that has no extension or is a symlink, an entry point that calls Module.runMain(__filename) for itself is reported twice. Its key is the resolved path, and the name is not the path as typed.

Still silent after this PR, each run on this head and on Node v26.3.0:

Flow This PR Node
a script whose body is behind require.main === module or import.meta.main the body does not run, exit 0 runs, exit 1
Module._load(path, null, true) nothing runs, exit 0 (jsFunctionLoad does nothing) exit 1
a script whose extension has no loader (task.es6) does not run, exit 0 (bun task.es6 runs it) runs, exit 1
Module.runMain() with no argument Cannot find package 'undefined'. Without a node_modules directory Bun asks the registry for a package with that name. runs process.argv[1]
in a bun test file, a test that starts the script and returns the run ends before the script fails, exit 0, as for an import() that nothing awaits not applicable

Under bun test, the failure goes to the test that runs when the script fails. A test that waits for the script fails (one test cell).

Costs

  • Cells for each call that the entry point does not take (1,000 calls, heapStats() after a full GC, while the loads are pending): main 3 Promise + 1 ModuleLoadingContext. This PR: 4 Promise, 1 ModuleLoadingContext, 1 Function. After the loads settle the counts are equal.
  • Microtasks for one successful call (gdb breakpoint count on JSC::runInternalMicrotask): 13 on main, 14 here, for a .cjs and an .mjs script.
  • Release builds (ThinLTO, Linux x64) of 5f5799e without and with this diff: .text 106,006,149 to 106,007,429 bytes (+1,280), data and bss unchanged, and the file has the same 106,178,312 bytes. jsFunctionRunMain 1,045 to 1,671 bytes, Bun__onRunMainRejected 167 bytes, VirtualMachine::uncaught_rejection 493 bytes. No field is added to VirtualMachine or Zig::GlobalObject.
  • A process that never calls Module.runMain runs no new code.
  • Not measured: instruction counts. perf and valgrind are not available on the machine (perf_event_open returns ENOENT, and no package source is reachable).

Checks

  • module-run-main.test.js: 56 pass, of which 11 are test.failing cells. On a debug build of main 37 fail: 35 because nothing is reported, and 2 test.failing cells because main prints that failure once.
  • The test.failing cells hold what Node prints where Bun differs: a script without a top-level await runs inside the call (6), an entry point that a preload started is reported (3), and a failure is printed once (2).
  • The same file with the settings CI uses for ASAN (BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1, BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1, detect_leaks=1): 56 pass.
  • Not in the test file, run by hand on this head: -e, --print, stdin, bun run, a directory entry point, bun build --compile with and without --bytecode. Each reports once.
  • The branch has main merged, with the WebKit upgrade of Upgrade WebKit to 23b0720b40 #45303. On a debug build of that: the test file, the run with the CI settings, the flow matrix, and plugins.test.ts 96 pass, preload-test.test.js 5 pass, bun-main-entry-point.test.ts 3 pass, as-node.test.ts 11 pass, watch.test.ts 15 pass, hot.test.ts 16 pass, test-module-run-main-monkey-patch.js passes, the Module.runMain tests of node-module-module.test.js 18 pass.
  • module-graph.test.ts: 289 pass. Four dynamicImport tests need 4.3 to 5.0 seconds each alone, on debug builds of main and of this PR in turn, and reach the 5 second limit in some runs. One hot.test.ts test about the promise of the entry point fails in some runs on both builds too.
  • The tests are in their own file. node-module-module.test.js does not pass a plain bun bd test run on the debug build here, with or without this change: two enableCompileCache tests need more than 5 seconds. The new file is not in test/no-validate-exceptions.txt, so CI validates exception checks for it.

Self-review

A first review by lens raised 17 concerns, and 16 led to changes. The review on this PR found three more defects (a Bun.ModuleGraph did not get the failure, a nested load replaced the entry point's promise, the --hot test accepted a missing report), and all three are fixed.

A second review of the design and of the diff raised 29 concerns. What changed:

  • The rule "a call for a module that is loaded or loading starts nothing" is gone. It left a script unreported when an import() caught its failure, when a require() of it threw on a top-level await, and when a second call came while it waited. A script that a failed graph left in the loader registry did not run at all. The call now always joins the load.
  • The review proposed to keep one early return, for a key in require.cache. This PR has none. The entry point's own module is the one case with no reaction, so an entry point that calls Module.runMain for itself is still reported once, and a program without a failing script behaves as on main.
  • Run as node, the path of the entry point is as typed, and a preload's call with process.argv[1] for it was reported twice. The name that the caller gave is now compared with that path.
  • With --watch, --unhandled-rejections=none no longer hides the failure.
  • The order, catch and origin tests use a script with a top-level await, where Node 26.3, Node 26.12 and Bun agree. New tests: the two call shapes of Corepack and istanbul, the flows above, --watch, a bun test file, and the test.failing cells.
  • Not built: one VirtualMachine function that every reporter of a failed root load calls. It changes how every --hot reload reports.

The review of the later commits on this PR raised four points:

  • A --hot reload with --unhandled-rejections=none, strict or throw. The entry point has the same behaviour on main (runs are in the review thread), so the reaction stays as it is, and the fix belongs in the reload reporter, for both.
  • C++ and Rust each had a copy of the owner enum. The enum is gone: the check of the loader registry was its only reader before the load, so one call after the load is enough.
  • A resolver call found the entry point, and it used the log of the VM. The resolver is not asked any more.
  • The watcher test ended its process by hand beside await using. It does not any more.

Seen on the way, not changed here

  • With bun -r ./preload.cjs main.cjs, if the preload calls require() at all, a throw in the CommonJS entry point reaches uncaughtException listeners with the origin unhandledRejection. Without a require() call in the preload the origin is uncaughtException, as in Node.
  • require("./x.cjs") and Module.runMain("./x.cjs") run x.cjs twice when the file has no CommonJS syntax. Node runs it once. Main does the same as this PR.
  • Run as node with a path that has no extension, import.meta.main is false in the entry point (Make the entry point of the node shim the main module #43409 is open for the main module of the node shim).

Walkthrough

Module.runMain now selects whether the entry point or Module.runMain handles loading. The VM provides entry-point checks and rejection handling. Tests cover errors, execution contexts, repeated calls, and hot reloads.

Changes

Module.runMain behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
RunMain ownership selection
src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp, src/runtime/hw_exports.rs
The VM identifies entry-point keys and exposes its exit-on-uncaught-exception setting. The runtime selects whether the entry point or Module.runMain owns loading.
Rejection reporting
src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, src/runtime/hw_exports.rs
The VM gives the current module graph the first chance to handle a rejection. The runtime throws the reason in watcher mode when exit-on-uncaught-exception is enabled; otherwise, it forwards the reason to VM rejection handling.
RunMain behavior tests
test/js/node/module/module-run-main.test.js
The tests cover error reporting, execution contexts, rejection modes, repeated calls, entry-point behavior, test-runner failures, and hot reloads.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 01fb7

Under hot reload with unhandled rejections set to none, a later reload failure from a script started by Module.runMain can be silently ignored. This is a narrow configuration, but it recreates the silent failure this change is meant to remove. Fix it or accept the gap before merging.

Status: ready for review. The fix is in the PR.

How I reproduced it

// wrapper.cjs
require("node:module").runMain(require("node:path").resolve(process.argv[2]));
// throws.cjs
throw new Error("boom");

bun wrapper.cjs throws.cjs on main exits 0 and prints nothing. node wrapper.cjs throws.cjs exits 1 and prints the error. The same holds for an .mjs script that throws, a rejected top-level await, a syntax error, and a missing import or require. With this PR each of them prints the error once and exits 1.

The test is test/js/node/module/module-run-main.test.js: 37 of its 56 tests fail on a debug build of main, and all 56 pass with this change. 11 of the 56 are test.failing cells that hold what Node prints where Bun still differs.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp — pre-existing: callers that use Node's documented no-argument form Module.runMain() get a resolve error instead of the entry point running. At NodeModuleModule.cpp:832 callFrame->argument(0).toWTFString turns a missing argument into the string "undefined", which the loader then tries to resolve as a bare specifier. Node defaults main to process.argv[1]. Fix: when argument(0) is undefined, substitute the entry point (the VM's main path, or "bun:main" so the new EntryLoads/EntryAwaits owner logic at hw_exports.rs:127 applies) before resolving, so a preload or override that calls runMain() with no argument behaves as in Node.

    Why this was flagged

A preload, a Module.runMain override, or a tool written for Node calls require("node:module").runMain() with no argument, which Node defines as runMain(main = process.argv[1]). In jsFunctionRunMain (src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp:832) callFrame->argument(0) is jsUndefined and toWTFString yields the string "undefined"; line 836 then calls moduleLoader()->resolve on the bare specifier "undefined" with no referrer, which throws Cannot find module 'undefined' (or, with auto-install, tries to fetch the npm package named undefined). The entry point never runs and the caller gets a synchronous throw. The base branch has the same lines, so this is pre-existing, but this PR rewrites the function and adds entry-point ownership logic (hw_exports.rs:127-142) keyed on the resolved name, which the no-argument form never reaches. The repository's own Node fixture test/js/node/test/fixtures/es-modules/runmain.mjs:5 uses the no-argument form. No guard in the diff or on base substitutes the entry point for a missing argument.

Verification: pre-existing. Triggered when require("node:module").runMain() is called with no argument. src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp:832 callFrame->argument(0).toWTFString turns the missing argument into the string "undefined", which line 836 resolves as a bare specifier and throws at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3603. The base commit has the identical lines, so it fails by the same route.

… starts with Module.runMain()

The reaction asks the graph whose context is current before it reports an
uncaught exception. A load that starts inside the load of a preload's
Module.runMain no longer replaces the entry point's promise.

Code review completed

Nothing new to post: everything this review found is already covered by existing comments on this pull request or didn't merit a separate one.

A call for a module that was loaded or loading started nothing and
watched nothing. That left a script unreported when an import() caught
its failure, when a require() of it threw on a top-level await, and when
two calls came back to back. A script that a failed graph left in the
loader registry did not run at all.

The call now always joins the load. The entry point reports its own
module, and the first load of a Module.runMain that a preload set. A
reject reaction reports every other load.

The entry point's module is found through the resolver when main is the
path as typed: Bun run as node, with a path that has no extension or is
a symlink.

With --watch or --hot the reaction reports like a first load until the
first beforeExit. After that an uncaught exception ends the process, so
the failure goes to the rejection tracker, as a reloaded entry point's
does.

Two questions for a maintainer, before this merges. The new commit removes the rule that a call for a loaded module starts nothing, and the PR description has the details.

1. Should a script that has no top-level await run inside the Module.runMain call, as the main module?

Node does that: 26.3 for CommonJS, and 26.12 also for ES modules (run_main.js#L146-L200). This PR keeps Bun's order. Every script starts after the call returns. So, for try { Module.runMain("./throws.cjs") } catch {}:

stdout of a catch that prints exit code origin for a listener
main nothing 0 no event
this PR nothing 1 unhandledRejection
Node 26.12 caught 0 uncaughtException when nothing catches it

The reject reaction of this PR stays in both shapes, because it is Node's path for a script with a top-level await. If the answer is yes, the route I see is a real Module._load (#33026). The test.failing cells in the new test file hold Node's output for that change.

2. @dylan-conway: which handler of a Bun.ModuleGraph gets this failure after #43927?

The second commit here gives the failure of a script that the code of a graph starts to that graph, through Bun__ModuleGraph__handleUnhandledRejection(global, reason, owner). #43927 adds the promise to that hook and replaces onError. The reaction has the reason and can keep the promise of the load. Whichever PR lands second needs the answer.

One more point about order: #41147 (the default argument of Module.runMain()) must land after this PR. Alone, it turns the Cannot find package 'undefined' error of today into a silent exit 0 when the script fails. ts-node 10.9.2 makes that call (dist/bin.js:466).

…n() load

The check of the loader registry was the only reader of the owner before
the load. Without that check, one call after the load is enough. It
returns whether the entry point reports the load: its own module, or the
first load of a Module.runMain that a preload set.

The enum that C++ and Rust each had a copy of is gone.

…its path as typed

The call asked the resolver for the entry point's key when the key it
had was not the entry point's path. That resolve used the VM's own log,
and it ran for every call for another script.

Run as node, the entry point's path is as typed, and a preload that
passes process.argv[1] passes that same string. So the name the caller
gave is compared too, and the resolver is not asked.

I re-reviewed the latest push (563f161 and 01fb751) and found no new bugs; the two nits from the previous rounds (the _resolve call in is_entry_point and the manual proc.kill() beside await using) are addressed. Because this changes who reports a Module.runMain() load and the PR itself leaves a design question for a maintainer (whether a script without top-level await should run inside the call, as Node does), a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • Bun__onRunMainRejected: a throwing uncaughtException listener is caught by EventEmitter::innerInvokeEventListeners, so the reaction does not return Ok with a pending exception; the rethrow path under a watcher goes to the rejection tracker via the derived promise.
  • jsFunctionRunMain: Bun::toString borrows the stack-held WTF strings only for the duration of the call; JSFunction::create/performPromiseThenExported are non-throwing per scripts/jsc-exception-lint/nothrow.txt.
  • entry_point_takes_run_main: pending_internal_promise is only reset in reload_entry_point and test isolation, so later calls under a patched Module.runMain get the reaction; the old setOverrideModuleRunMainPromise symbol has no remaining references.
Extended reasoning...

The change replaces the Module.runMain promise hand-off in src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp with a Rust decision function plus a rejection reaction (src/runtime/hw_exports.rs) and adds VirtualMachine::uncaught_rejection in src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, with a 567-line new test file. It touches no security-sensitive surface (no auth, crypto, or untrusted parsing); the sensitive parts are exception-safety and lifetime across the C++/Rust boundary, which checked out. Deferral rather than approval: the semantics (which component reports a failed load, origin string, watcher behavior) are a Node-compat judgment the PR author explicitly asks a maintainer about, and every earlier inline thread was resolved by the author rather than an independent reviewer.
