Problem

  • util.inspect(new Response("x")) returns Response {}. Request, Headers, FormData, Blob, File, AbortSignal, AbortController, Event, TextDecoder and Timeout print empty too. So does console.log in a node:worker_threads Worker.
  • Their state is in native fields. formatValue (src/js/internal/util/inspect.js:1242) prints own properties or calls value[Symbol.for("nodejs.util.inspect.custom")], which node has and Bun did not.
  • This revives util.inspect: install [nodejs.util.inspect.custom] on web-platform prototypes #35292.

Fix

  • Each prototype gets node's method. Its native half copies the state into a plain object and runs no program code. internal/util/inspect_hooks has node's code for the rest.
  • A print keeps nothing on the value and does no stat. Bun's console (console.log, Bun.inspect, bun:test) neither calls nor lists the methods: its text stays byte-identical to main.
  • Verified: inspect-web-classes.test.ts (Node.js passes it too, main fails 59), custom-inspect.test.js (main fails 20).
  • Self-reviewed: 186 concerns raised, 185 addressed. Not added: upstream test-abortcontroller.js (test-abortcontroller.js #19492 has it).

Background

  • util.inspect calls value[nodejs.util.inspect.custom](depth, options, inspect) and prints the string it returns.
  • Bun's console, a separate native printer, also calls such a method. It skips these ten by their native function's address.
  • Considered a formatValue branch to Bun's printer: it gives Bun's console text and adds work per value.

Downsides

  • util.inspect drops properties a program added (req.user), as node does.
  • Loggers on node:util now print header values, URLs and form fields. So does a method that passes one to inspect.
  • console.log of one of the ten costs 216 to 1,766 more instructions (1% to 11%). Another value with a callable method: about 50. .text grows 23,296 B.
Notes

Repro

The script from the report prints one row per class. It exits 1 when a row has no state in it.

main, exit 1 this branch, exit 0
Headers      Headers {}                        Headers { 'x-request-id': 'abc123' }
Response     Response {}                       Response { status: 404, statusText: 'Not Found', headers: Headers { ... }, ... }
Request      Request {}                        Request { method: 'POST', url: 'http://127.0.0.1:1/users?id=7', ... }
Blob         Blob {}                           Blob { size: 5, type: 'text/csv' }
File         Blob {}                           File { size: 5, type: 'text/csv', name: 'report.csv', lastModified: 1791937485247 }
FormData     FormData {}                       FormData { user: 'ada' }
AbortSignal  AbortSignal {}                    AbortSignal { aborted: true }
Event        Event { isTrusted: [Getter] }     Event { type: 'ping', defaultPrevented: false, cancelable: false, timeStamp: 0 }
TextDecoder  TextDecoder {}                    TextDecoder { encoding: 'utf-16le', fatal: false, ignoreBOM: false }

AbortController {} and Timeout {} are not in the script. They had the same cause.

The two halves

  • The native half of a method finds the instance behind the receiver (a Proxy is unwrapped, and an object that inherits from an instance counts). It copies the state into a plain object. It runs no code of the program.
  • The JS half, internal/util/inspect_hooks, is node's method for the class: the names that node reads from this, the depth rule, the option changes, and the name of the constructor. It reads constructor.name as node does, so a getter that a program put there runs.
  • The older methods (streams, URL, CryptoKey and others) build their text in C++, in customInspect. The ten new ones need more than it does (undici's option changes, names that differ by class, the names read from this), so their tail is JS.
  • A Response prints the state of its body stream with node's method for a stream, in the JS half. The method of ReadableStream itself is not changed.
  • Follow-up, if the assignee agrees: move the 19 callers of customInspect, and the copies in BroadcastChannel, URLSearchParams and PerformanceEntry, to the JS tail, and delete customInspect. That replaces the method hunks of inspect hooks: copy user options with putDirectMayBeIndex #40008, Make a failed util.inspect load throw from custom inspect functions instead of aborting #39382 and Convert scope-object receivers in the chaining functions and inspect.custom fallbacks #39207.

What each class prints

Class Text Past the depth limit A receiver that holds no instance
Headers Headers { 'x-request-id': 'abc123' } the same text throws ERR_INVALID_THIS
Response Response { status, statusText, headers, body, bodyUsed, ok, redirected, type, url } the same text returned as it is
Request Request { method, url, headers, destination, referrer, referrerPolicy, mode, credentials, cache, redirect, integrity, signal } the same text, with signal: [AbortSignal] returned as it is
FormData FormData { user: 'ada' } the same text throws ERR_INVALID_THIS
Blob, File Blob { size, type }, File { size, type, name, lastModified } [Blob], [File] returned as it is
AbortSignal AbortSignal { aborted: false } [AbortSignal] returned as it is
AbortController AbortController { signal: AbortSignal { aborted: false } } AbortController {} returned as it is
Event and its subclasses CustomEvent { type, defaultPrevented, cancelable, timeStamp } CustomEvent throws ERR_INVALID_THIS
TextDecoder TextDecoder { encoding, fatal, ignoreBOM } [TextDecoder] throws ERR_INVALID_THIS
Timeout Timeout { _idleTimeout, _idleStart, _onTimeout, _repeat, _destroyed, ...own properties } the same text printed as a plain value
  • A null or undefined receiver throws ERR_INVALID_THIS for the nine web classes.
  • The error is the same one inside another value. util.inspect wrapped every error from a nested method in an AssertionError. Node rethrows it (util: don't catch on circular toStringTag error nodejs/node#55544), and this change does the same in formatRaw, for the methods of a program too. util.inspect: restore the URL arm of formatRaw, with the native class test before the href read #45261 makes the same change to that line. With getters: true, the catch of a getter now meets such a value: it prints null and undefined as node does, and a thrown primitive as undefined, as on main (node v26 prints the value).
  • Where node's depth does not count down (a Response, a Request, a TextDecoder, or a depth with no limit), a value that its own print reaches again shows as [Circular]. Node prints such a cycle until another method on it counts the depth down to the limit, and runs out of stack when none does. A cycle of classes that all count the depth down prints as in node.
  • The methods know which values they print from one option, [[inspect_hooks.printing]], which inspect passes on as it passes any option that it does not know. A method of a program that runs inside such a print gets that key in its options.

Where the text differs from node v26.3.0

The shared test file holds node's text, and Node.js v26.3.0 passes it. Where Bun prints other text, the row is a differs(nodeText, bunText, why) call: 41 calls in 95 tests. For the nine classes other than Request, every view of an ordinary instance is equal: the text, depth 0, three levels deep, %s, colors, breakLength: Infinity, compact: false, depth: null. The differences, by cause:

  • Values that Bun holds. The method prints what the getters of the class give.
    • Request: referrer is '' and credentials is 'include'. Bun has no keepalive, isReloadNavigation or isHistoryNavigation.
    • body shows as null, or as the stream when the Response has one. Bun makes the stream at the first read of response.body, so the line can appear later. For a string body, headers has no content-type: that is the state of response.headers in Bun.
    • Headers: the names are lower-case and in Bun's storage order. A header with the name __proto__ prints. undici leaves it out.
    • A File with a text type has ;charset=utf-8 in type, so one FormData line wraps.
    • Timeout: Bun stores five of node's fields. Node also has _idlePrev, _idleNext, _timerArgs and five symbol keys. With showHidden, Bun lists the tag of Timeout.prototype, as on main.
    • TextDecoder with showHidden: node adds Symbol(flags) and Symbol(handle).
  • Receivers, by decision.
    • A Proxy around an instance, and an object that inherits from one, print the state. Node throws a TypeError for six classes, because its state is in private fields.
    • A receiver with no instance gets one answer per class (the table). Node's answers are not uniform: Response { status: undefined, ... }, Object { aborted: undefined }, or a TypeError with the text of the engine.
  • Direct calls. method.call(x) with no options throws a TypeError on both, with other text. The TextDecoder method prints in Bun, because it reads no option. method.call(blob, -1, {}) returns [Blob]. Node returns the object, and its util.inspect makes [Blob] from it.
  • The name of a subclass past the depth limit. Bun's getPrefix prints [MyBlob [Blob]]. Node v26.3.0 prints [MyBlob]. Node removed that rule in v26.9.0 (util: canonicalize namespaced tags in inspect() nodejs/node#63257), and v26.11.1 prints [MyBlob [Blob]] too.

Also:

Console

  • console.log and Bun.inspect do not call the ten methods and do not list them. They look for a method as if the ten were not there, so a method that a program put on the value, or on a prototype above (EventTarget.prototype for an AbortSignal), is called as on main. Three states differ: a property of a program under the key on a prototype above is not in a listing of the value, an accessor for the key on a prototype above is not read, and a method behind a Proxy that a program made the prototype of one of the ten prototypes is not found. The bun:test printer calls no such method on main either. It does not list the ten.
  • For a value that the console prints itself, the text is byte-identical to main: 330 prints give 3,601 lines, and 0 differ (Measurements). That includes each X.prototype and the older methods.
  • This is a departure for these ten classes. A built-in method drives the console for the older classes (url.test.ts:254 and perf_hooks.test.ts:311 pin that). Here the console keeps its own text: it has a printer for Response, Request, Headers, FormData, Blob and Timeout, and it lists the properties of AbortSignal, AbortController, Event and TextDecoder, which shows reason, detail and data.
  • The console recognises the ten methods by the address of the host function. It leaves one out of a listing when the key is a symbol with the name of the method's key.
  • A method that the console does call can pass one of the ten to util.inspect. Then the text there has the state. That holds for a method of a program (@hono/node-server's Response printed headers: Headers {} and prints the header values now) and for an older built-in method (a PerformanceMark whose detail is a Blob, a stream reader whose closed promise rejected with a Response).
  • A program that adds its own method only when the key is missing (if (!(custom in Response.prototype))) no longer adds it. Then console.log prints Bun's text where it printed the program's.
  • In a node:worker_threads Worker, console.log is the node:console Console. So console.log(new Response(null)) there printed Response {} on main, and prints node's text now. worker_threads: keep the native console in workers, routed through process.stdout/stderr #39592 changes that path.

Measurements

Release builds of main 5f5799e and of this change on it, linux x64. perf, valgrind and strace are not in the build container. Instruction counts come from a PTRACE_SINGLESTEP counter between two calls of a marker host function, with BUN_JSC_useJIT=0, so JS code counts at the cost of the interpreter. Two runs of the build of main differ by up to 164 instructions per call on a row. Syscall counts come from a PTRACE_SYSCALL counter over all threads.

Tests

  • test/js/node/util/inspect-web-classes.test.ts uses node:test and node:assert, and holds node's text. Node v26.3.0 passes 95 of its 96 tests and skips the last one, which runs the file under Node.js. Bun passes 88 and has 8 todo. A release build of main fails 59. The last test runs the file under Node.js when the node on the path is the version that Bun reports (26.3.0): another version prints other text for some rows.
  • Its inventory lists 44 prototypes that own the method in node and that a program can reach from a global or a module export. 36 own it in Bun in that file: MessagePort gets it when node:worker_threads loads. The 8 todo rows are BlockList, EventTarget, Performance, PerformanceObserver, PerformanceObserverEntryList, SocketAddress, TextEncoder and X509Certificate. Node has the method on more prototypes that only an instance gives: Histogram, PerformanceNodeTiming, the URLSearchParams iterator, the timers list, the HTTP/2 session and stream, and vm.Module.
  • test/js/node/util/custom-inspect.test.js has the guarantees that only Bun makes: the console text, no code of the program in the native half, no header list or signal kept, Bun.serve sends the same response after a print (11 body kinds, GET and HEAD), a file shows a size only once it has one, no S3 request, a print that a node:vm timeout ends. 72 pass, also with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1, with a random order, and in one process with the other file. A release build of main fails 20.
  • test-eventtarget.js and test-events-customevent.js (vendored) get their upstream assertions back. Both fail on main.
  • The other upstream files for these methods are not in the tree, and none passes in full yet:
Upstream file main this change What is left
test-abortcontroller.js 17 of 19 18 of 19 isTrusted is an own accessor of an event in Bun (#19492 has the file)
test-blob.js stops at line 46 the same new Blob([], { type: 1 }).type, before the inspect assertions
test-file.js stops at line 10 the same File has no prototype of its own (#30328)
test-whatwg-encoding-custom-textdecoder.js stops at line 113 line 113, with node's text less two fields Symbol(flags) and Symbol(handle) under showHidden
  • Also ran on the debug build: response.test.ts, request.test.ts, headers.test.ts, blob.test.ts, console-log.test.ts, test/js/bun/util/inspect.test.js, bun-inspect.test.ts, util.test.js, node-timers.test.ts, text-decoder.test.js, abort.test.ts, url.test.ts, perf_hooks.test.ts, bun-serve-file.test.ts, and the Deno-derived files for Response, Request, Headers and Event. Also tsc for src/js.

Self-review

Four rounds: two full reviews of the diff and two targeted checks of the reworks. They raised 48, 44, 69 and 25 concerns, with duplicates. Each is fixed or is in the lists above, but one: the upstream test-abortcontroller.js is not added. It needs a gate on one subtest (isTrusted), the vendored files are kept as upstream has them, and #19492 has that file.

… six more classes

node:util printed Response, Request, Headers, FormData, Blob, AbortSignal,
AbortController, Event, TextDecoder and Timeout as `Name {}`, because
their state is in native fields. Each prototype now has node's own
`[Symbol.for("nodejs.util.inspect.custom")]` method. util.inspect,
util.format and the node:console Console find it through the lookup
they already do.

- The native half of a method finds the instance and copies its state
  into a plain object. It reads native fields and runs no code of the
  program: no getter of the class, no Proxy trap.
- The rest of node's method for each class is a case in the new internal
  module internal/util/inspect_hooks: the names it reads from `this`,
  the depth rule, the options, the name of the constructor, and the
  answer for a receiver of another class. Where node's depth does not
  count down, a value that holds itself in a field that its method
  prints is `[Circular]`: the methods hand on which values they print
  in an option of the `inspect` that they start.
- Headers, FormData, AbortSignal, AbortController and Event have a host
  function next to their prototype. `inspectCustom: true` in a
  *.classes.ts file installs the method for Response, Request, Blob,
  TextDecoder and Timeout, with readers in Rust.
- A print changes nothing. The Response and Request readers do not
  attach a header list: `default_headers` and `default_fetch_headers`
  build the list that the `headers` getter would attach. They read what
  a cached getter gave before, keep no URL and no signal, and give the
  state of a body stream, not the stream. A Blob shows a size only when
  it has one.
- Bun's native formatter (console.log, Bun.inspect, bun:test) keeps its
  own text for these classes. It looks for a method as if the ten host
  functions were not there, and does not list them under the method's
  key. It knows them by their address.
- util.inspect rethrows an error that a nested value's method throws,
  as node does. It wrapped every such error in an AssertionError.

Walkthrough

This change adds Node.js custom inspection for web classes and timers. It generates and installs inspection hooks, supplies runtime fields, and formats inspection output. It also updates utility inspection behavior and adds tests for output, receiver handling, recursion, and state preservation.

Changes

Custom inspection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate and enable inspection hooks
src/codegen/class-definitions.ts, src/codegen/generate-classes.ts, src/runtime/node/node.classes.ts, src/runtime/webcore/...classes.ts, src/runtime/generated_classes.rs
Class definitions and code generation identify inspect-custom hooks, install callbacks, and emit a table of Node-only hooks. Runtime class definitions enable hooks for selected types.
Install and dispatch native hooks
src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs, src/jsc/bindings/webcore/..., src/jsc/bindings/webcore/streams/...
Native helpers install hooks, resolve receivers, and dispatch inspection calls. WebCore bindings provide inspection fields for events, headers, form data, abort objects, and readable streams.
Format custom inspection output
src/js/internal/util/inspect_hooks.ts, src/js/internal/util/inspect.js
The JavaScript hook formats supported web classes and timers with depth handling, circular-reference tracking, and receiver fallbacks. The inspect utility also changes stack-overflow and getter-error handling.
Supply runtime inspection fields
src/runtime/webcore/node_inspect.rs, src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs, src/runtime/webcore/Request.rs, src/runtime/webcore/Response.rs, src/runtime/webcore/TextDecoder.rs, src/runtime/timer/TimeoutObject.rs, src/runtime/webcore.rs
Runtime implementations provide inspection fields for web classes and timers. Blob helpers return size and modification time only when known; Request and Response header initialization uses default-header helpers.
Validate inspection behavior
test/js/node/util/*, test/js/node/test/parallel/test-event*.js, test/internal/source-lints/redis-client-types.test.ts
Tests cover inspection output, depth and receiver behavior, recursion, getters, runtime state, timers, and Event inspection. The source-lint test updates inspectCustom member collection.

Fix the lint failure: read descriptor.value once.

The CI step bun lint fails on Line 97 with no-duplicate-conditional-property-access. Line 97 reads descriptor.value in the condition, and Line 98 reads it again.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, two other candidates were examined and ruled out: the FormData hook collapsing a repeated field whose first value is '' (inspect_hooks.ts:221) mirrors undici's own falsy check, so it matches Node; and the ERR_INVALID_THIS wording for Headers/FormData/Event/TextDecoder on a wrong receiver goes through the shared $ERR_INVALID_THIS code, so only the message text differs from undici, not the code or class.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds Node-style custom inspect hooks across ten native classes, spanning codegen, C++ bindings, Rust readers and a new internal JS module, with ~2,700 added lines; the inline findings already flag the regressions worth a human look, and this note only records two further Node-compat divergences that were checked and found consistent with upstream.

🟡 (optional) Bun's console (console.log, Bun.inspect, bun:test) stops running a user's accessor-defined inspect hook on a parent prototype of the ten classes; on the base branch that getter ran and its text was printed. The walk at WebStreamsInspectCustom.cpp:162-165 reads each prototype with getDirect, so an accessor property comes back as a raw GetterSetter cell, which is not node-only and is returned as the "method". ConsoleObject.rs:2148 then sees a non-callable value and falls through to default formatting. Fix: when getDirect yields a GetterSetter or CustomGetterSetter, resolve it with a real get (or getIfPropertyExists from that object) so accessor hooks above a node-only hook keep working, for every chain the walk covers.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: Object.defineProperty(EventTarget.prototype, Symbol.for('nodejs.util.inspect.custom'), { get() { return function() { return 'sig'; } } }) and then console.log(new AbortController().signal) through Bun's native formatter. On the base branch value.fast_get (ConsoleObject.rs:2138, getIfPropertyExistsPrototypePollutionMitigationUnsafe) walked the chain with a real get, ran the getter, and printed 'sig'. After this change fast_get finds the new node-only AbortSignal hook first, inspect_custom_for_formatter is called (ConsoleObject.rs:2147), and the loop at WebStreamsInspectCustom.cpp:162 uses object->getDirect(vm, name) at :163. For an accessor that returns the GetterSetter cell; isNodeOnlyInspectHook (:139-143) is false for it, so :165 returns the cell. ConsoleObject.rs:2148 checks is_callable, which is false for a GetterSetter, so the hook is skipped and the default 'AbortSignal {}' text prints. The safeguard (is_callable) only hides the leaked cell, it does not run the accessor.

Verification: Base branch: value.fast_get (src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs:2138) runs the accessor's getter and its text was printed. After this change the walk at WebStreamsInspectCustom.cpp:162-165 uses object->getDirect(vm, name), which for an accessor property returns the raw GetterSetter cell. In ConsoleObject.rs:2148 callback_value.is_callable() is false for a GetterSetter, so the code falls through to default formatting.

🟡 (optional) Operators logging an S3File through node:util loggers now see 'Blob { type: '...' }' with no size and no S3 marker, where the base branch printed 'Blob [S3File] {}' and identified the object. At node_inspect.rs:184-185 the Blob reader tags every non-File blob as "Blob", and size_if_known at Blob.rs:5812 returns None for S3 stores, so the printed state has nothing that says S3 or where the object points. Fix: keep the class identity in the printed text for S3 (and BunFile) stores, for example by passing the toStringTag or the store kind as the tag so the JS half prints 'S3File { type, ... }' or keeps the '[S3File]' suffix, as the depth-0 path already does.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: const f = Bun.s3.file('k'); util.inspect(f), or console.log(f) in a node:worker_threads Worker, or a logger (winston, debug) that formats with util.inspect. Blob.inspect_custom at node_inspect.rs:163-186 runs; is_file is false so tag is c"Blob" at :184; size_if_known (Blob.rs:5812, S3 => None) adds no size; the fields hold only type. inspect_hooks.ts:238-244 prints Blob { type: '' }. On the base branch the hook did not exist and formatRaw printed the constructor and the Symbol.toStringTag, giving 'Blob [S3File] {}', which told the reader what the object was. The pastDepthLimit path (inspect_hooks.ts:114-155) still emits '[Blob [S3File]]', so the identity is lost only at the normal depth, which is the common case. The dismissal cites custom-inspect.test.js:841-866 asserting this text; a test certifying the loss does not make it correct for the operators reading logs. Remedy: keep the S3File identity in the tag or suffix at normal depth.

Verification: Trigger: any util.inspect/node:util-based logger given an S3File from Bun.s3.file(). Blob::inspect_custom picks tag = c"Blob" at node_inspect.rs:185, and size_if_known yields None for DataTag::S3 (Blob.rs:5812), so inspect_hooks.ts:244 returns Blob { type: '' }: the [S3File] identity the base branch printed is gone. custom-inspect.test.js:841-860 pins exactly this, so the author chose this.

🟡 (optional) Users who log a sliced S3 or file-backed Blob through node:util get Blob { type: '...' } with no size line, although blob.size returns a plain number with no stat. size_if_known at src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:5805 returns None for every S3 store, and at Blob.rs:5810 for a file slice whose stored size is above file.max_size, while get_size at Blob.rs:2078-2096 returns self.size unchanged whenever it is not MAX_SIZE. Fix: when blob.size is already a concrete number (size != MAX_SIZE), return it for every store kind, and only fall back to None where the getter would need resolve_size with a stat or request. [also at: src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:5801 - Users printing a slice of a Bun.file through node:util get 'Blob { type: ... }' with no size, while blob.size returns the number without any stat.]

Why this was flagged

Trigger: Bun.s3.file(key).slice(0, 100) or Bun.file(p).slice(0, 100) on a file whose stat later reports 50 bytes, then util.inspect(blob) (any node:util based logger). get_slice_from at src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1802 sets the slice's size to 100, so the size getter (Blob.rs:2078, size != MAX_SIZE) returns 100 with no I/O. size_if_known returns None for DataTag::S3 unconditionally (Blob.rs:5805) and for a File slice via (size <= file.max_size).then_some(size) (Blob.rs:5810), so the reader at src/runtime/webcore/node_inspect.rs:166-168 omits the field. The PR's table and the base-branch getter both promise a size; the inspect text silently drops it, which is wrong data in logs rather than 'unknown' data. The dismissal said the omission is 'documented' for values needing a stat, but these values need none. Remedy: return Some(size) whenever size != MAX_SIZE regardless of store tag.

Verification: Triggered whenever a program calls util.inspect on a slice of a Bun.file() or S3 file. size_if_known (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:5789-5812) returns None for every S3 store (line 5811) and for a File store before any stat (lines 5799-5801), so the inspect text is Blob { type: '...' } while blob.size reports a number with no I/O.

🟡 nit (optional): the "Node.js passes this file" test reports PASSED on almost every machine without checking anything, so the cross-check it exists for never runs in CI. At test/js/node/util/inspect-web-classes.test.ts:1090 it returns silently unless a system node on PATH reports exactly Bun's fixed process.versions.node, and it shells out to that binary with raw spawnSync rather than a harness skip. Fix: gate the test with an explicit skip that names the missing or mismatched node (and a reason), so a skipped cross-check is visible, and keep the real-node run bounded in time; a bare return inside the test body hides the gap today. [also at: test/js/node/util/inspect-web-classes.test.ts:1093 - nit: maintainers get a test that reports PASSED without running anything when the system node is missing or is not the pinned version.]

Why this was flagged

The test at test/js/node/util/inspect-web-classes.test.ts:1088 runs only under Bun ({ skip: !isBun }). At :1089 it spawns node -p process.versions.node from PATH and at :1090 compares it to Bun's own process.versions.node, a constant Bun reports, not the installed Node version. When node is absent or any other version, :1092 returns and the test counts as passed. Repository review rules say a bare return reports PASSED and that tests needing a system binary must skipIf with a reason. On the base branch this file does not exist, so nothing is lost, but the PR text relies on this test as proof that Node v26.3.0 passes the shared file, and merged CI will never exercise it; nor is the node --test run of a 1,100-line file at :1094 bounded by a timeout when it does run.

Verification: nit. test/js/node/util/inspect-web-classes.test.ts:1088-1093: when node is missing from PATH or its version differs from the one Bun reports, the body returns with no assertion and no skip directive, so the runner records the test as passed. So on CI the comparison matches and node --test does run. Nothing breaks on the base branch's CI path.
