Problem

  • In an ESM bundle, x = require("react") is miscompiled. const { useState } = require("react") throws ReferenceError: exports is not defined. require("@tanstack/react-query") with --external react throws TypeError: Attempted to assign to readonly property. An imported export const x = require("react") fails with No matching export.
  • Fuzzing found it. No user reported it. Builds of import code do not change.
  • The fold in visit_decls (src/js_parser/visit/mod.rs) makes x the import namespace and deletes the declarator before a later write is known.

Fix

  • The declarator stays until the scope that declares x is visited (settle_require_aliases, src/js_parser/p.rs). Then x becomes the namespace only if nothing assigns it, declares it again, or reads it by name (eval, with).
  • While x waits, x.a is an import item and x stays counted, so a kept variable keeps its declaration.
  • Verified: test/bundler/bundler_cjs2esm.test.ts (55 new tests, 40 fail on main). Also all 74 bundler test files.

Background

Downsides

  • A rolldown-built CommonJS package reads hooks through its interop object: @tanstack/react-query +478 B, +32% to +40% per useQuery component under V8.
  • A read visited before a later rebind keeps two rules of an import read (Notes). They change none of 7,772 scanned declarators.
  • Release binary: +13.8 KB.
Notes

No GitHub issue exists for this. The failing shapes come from fuzzing of the bundler and from the packages named below.

Repros (React 19.3.1, bun build entry.js --outfile out.mjs, then node out.mjs)

  • const { useState, version } = require("react"); console.log(typeof useState, version); Main: ReferenceError: exports is not defined in ES module scope (bun out.mjs prints undefined undefined). This PR: function 19.3.1.
  • const { useQuery, QueryClient } = require("@tanstack/react-query"); console.log(typeof useQuery, typeof QueryClient); (5.104.3) with --external react. Main: TypeError: Assignment to constant variable. at load (bun out.mjs: TypeError: Attempted to assign to readonly property.). This PR: function function. require("@reduxjs/toolkit/query/react") (2.13.0) with --target=node --external react --external react-dom fails the same way on main.
  • lib.ts with export const React = require("react"), imported by the entry. Main: error: No matching export in "lib.ts" for import "React". This PR: the bundle runs.

What changes for each shape (x = require("<unwrap-list package>"), ESM output)

Shape main, 1.4.2 this PR
var/let/const x, a statement of a function body or of the module, or a let/const of a block, never rebound x is the namespace, direct bindings the same output, with the two exceptions below
export const x, export import x = require(), export const in a TypeScript namespace No matching export exported variable that holds the namespace
x assigned later (x = v, [x] = .., for (x of ..), `x = ..`, from a closure, from a static block)
var x declared twice, function x + var x, parameter + var x, var x + function x in a block one declaration wins silently x is a variable
direct eval in scope, with that reads x x is the namespace x is a variable
const { a } = require("react") __toESM((exports)) for a package that keeps its wrapper reads the namespace
using x = require() the declaration is deleted: nothing is disposed, nothing throws x holds the namespace: a TypeError
var x in a nested block, or as the body of an if without braces folded, also when the branch does not run x is a variable
an initializer that only folds to the call: true && require("react"), (0, require("react")) with --minify-syntax x is a variable the same
x assigned only in a branch that the build removes (if (process.env.NODE_ENV !== "production") x = v with --production) x is the namespace the same, when the parser visits the write after the declaration

The two exceptions for a variable that nothing rebinds:

  • A variable that a function reads above the declaration keeps its import. function early() { return x } var x = require("react") in a TypeScript file throws ReferenceError: x is not defined on main. So does a listed package with function above() { return impl } var impl = require("./impl.js").
  • With --minify, identifier names can differ from main at the same size (4 of the 112 real-React builds below).

How the count works. A folded read x.a removes one use of x on main. While x waits, this PR keeps that use and records one use of the minted namespace symbol in the same part. When x becomes the namespace, the parser subtracts those recorded uses from x in each part and drops the minted symbol. A debug build fails if a subtraction is larger than the count (take_back_uses). When x stays a variable, nothing is subtracted: every count is at least the real count. Once a write to x is visited, later reads are not folded: they are property reads of the variable.

Known gap: a read that the parser visits before a later rebind. The read is in a function above the write, or the write is in a hoisted function. The read is an import item when the write is seen. It prints as x.a again, and a call that had no this prints as (0, x.fn)(). Two rules for an import read were applied before:

  • A read whose value is unused is removed when it is a statement of the module. A getter of the new value does not run.
  • Under --minify-syntax a constant with one use can move across the read: const copy = local; return x.bump + copy reads local after the getter bump.

Main is not right in any of these programs: it ignores the rebind and reads the package. The matrix pins the first rule as knownGap (24 cells). A scan of 304 installed package versions (6,081 files, 7,772 such declarators): 7,636 are never rebound, 131 are rebound by the next statement with no read between, 1 is a var in a nested block, and 4 are read first. The 4 are the React 19.3.1 development jsx runtimes, each with one read as a var initializer, which no rule above changes. To close the gap, the bundler has to decide the removal of such a statement after the scope is settled, and has to keep a single-use constant from moving across a read of a variable that still waits. The second costs an inlining next to each read of a variable that is never rebound. This PR does neither. I handed the follow-up off as a separate task. It is not part of #45296.

What stays as on main

Measurements. Release builds of the merge base 5f5799e ("main" below) and of this PR (linux x64).

  • Matrix (test/bundler/unwrapped-require-matrix.ts: 2 packages x declaration kind x 13 rebinds x 17 reads x 11 scopes x 3 visit orders, each cell compared with the unbundled run): 28,152 cells. Wrong cells, plain / minified: main and 1.4.2 7,382 / 8,129, this PR 24 / 103. The 24 are the known gap. The other 79 minified cells are the (0, x.fn)() case above and are wrong on main too. A release build runs every cell (three tests, 7 s in total). A debug or sanitizer build runs 216 cells.
  • Real React: 112 builds (react and react-dom 18.3.1 and 19.3.1, 7 entries, NODE_ENV development and production, plain and --minify, with and without --sourcemap=linked, --target=node). 88 are byte-identical to main. 16 are the entry with const { useState, createElement, version } = require("react"): main's bundle throws a ReferenceError in 12 of them. 4 React 19.3.1 development JSX builds differ by +15 B and -1 B: the jsx development runtime reassigns React. 4 minified development builds differ in identifier names only. All 112 bundles of this PR run.
  • Bundled with --production: require("@tanstack/react-query") 68,315 to 68,793 B. require("@reduxjs/toolkit/query/react") with --target=node: 118,359 to 118,961 B.
  • Never folding (x = x appended to each such declaration in react, react-dom and scheduler, --production): react-dom client 18.3.1 134,463 to 143,883 B (+7.0%), server 18.3.1 73,679 to 78,054 B (+5.9%), client 19.3.1 211,377 to 223,819 B (+5.9%), server 19.3.1 208,179 to 217,338 B (+4.4%).
  • A const in a block: { const m = require("react"); console.log(m.version) } (React 18.3.1, --production) is 855 B on main and on this PR. if (typeof document !== "undefined") { const ReactDOM = require("react-dom"); ... } is 131,926 B on both.
  • A write that --production removes: let React = require("react"); if (process.env.NODE_ENV !== "production") React = Object.assign({}, React); console.log(React.version) is 855 B on both, byte-identical.
  • A var in a nested block: prop-types 15.8.1 without flags 32,389 to 32,429 B. With --production the output is identical.
  • No unwrapped require: three.js 0.186.1, output byte-identical (334,189 B).
  • React Compiler: a component with const React = require("react") in its body (React 19.3.1 server build, --react-compiler --production --target=node) is 225,557 B on both.
  • Time is linear in the number of declarations. One file of 20,000 declarations with one read each, best of 9 interleaved runs, main / PR: at module scope 150 / 162 ms, in functions 183 / 175 ms, rebound at module scope 182 / 184 ms, rebound in functions 193 / 155 ms. 80,000 at module scope: 709 / 769 ms.
  • Measured on an earlier revision of this PR: 19,000 declarations of one name in one file, half of them variables that stay, build in 873 ms against 509 ms on main. The time is in the number renamer, which tries x2 .. xN for each variable that stays. Main pays the same for any nested variable with the name of N namespace variables of a wrapped package: 10,000 such pairs build in 8.7 s on main and on this PR. That is a separate defect of the renamer. I handed it off.
  • Release binary text: 106,006,149 to 106,019,973 B (size, +13,824 B).
  • Run-time cost of a rebound alias, measured for the first revision of this PR on main 6c1eb06 (this code path did not change since): 200 components that call useQuery once, @tanstack/react-query 5.104.1 CommonJS build, --production. node 26.3 (V8): 4,088 to 5,704 ns, 4,172 to 5,514 ns, 6,462 to 8,797 ns per component (3 runs, minimum of 1,500 rounds each). Bun (JSC): +4% to +12% at the 5th percentile. Main binds these hooks directly only because it miscompiles the rebind.
  • Allocator calls, same earlier measurement (gdb hit counts on the mimalloc entry points): +0 for a file with no such declaration, +1 for a file with one or more, +0 per read.
  • What a file with no such declaration pays, from the diff: one branch for each statement list (is the wait list empty), one tag compare for each declarator with an initializer, one branch for each assignment target, one lookup in the empty wait list for each property read of an import namespace and for each single-use candidate of the inliner, and in the printer one tag compare for each call, plus one symbol lookup when the call target is an import item. The times above include all of them.
  • valgrind, perf and bloaty are not installed in the container I used, so there are no instruction counts and no per-crate size split.

Other behaviour changes

  • Cannot assign to import for x.a = 1 is reported when x can still become the namespace, as on main. It is not reported when x is a variable: after a write to x, for a var in a nested block, for an exported or twice-declared x. Such a variable holds the namespace object, not module.exports. For a package that stays a __commonJS wrapper, Object.keys(x) has a default, and a write to an existing export throws a TypeError at run time.
  • using x = require("pkg") keeps its declaration, also in a for head. The value is the namespace, so the declaration throws a TypeError. Node throws one for the module.exports of react, react-dom, react-is, scheduler and the jsx runtimes. For a listed package with a disposable module.exports, Node disposes it, main does not and says nothing, and this PR throws. bundler: keep exported and using declarations initialized by an unwrapped require() #39244 kept that require() a call. No listed package is disposable.
  • With --react-compiler, the compiler host reports the namespace of an unwrapped require() as a binding of the module. A component with [require("react")], or with a closure over such a variable, is compiled and runs (main: ReferenceError: react is not defined). A component is left as written only when a variable in it, at any depth, stays a variable after a read took it for the namespace.
  • In TypeScript, an unreferenced const x = require("react") now loads the package, as the same line does in JavaScript. A TypeScript import x = require() that nothing reads is still removed.
  • Module-scope var x = require("react"); function x() {} prints both declarations, as main does for every other initializer: SyntaxError: Identifier 'x' has already been declared when the bundle loads as an ES module. Main prints function undefined for the require() case. js_parser: print a var merged with a top-level function declaration as an assignment #44001 fixes the print of a var merged with a function declaration.
  • x[""] prints as written. Main prints x alone: print_namespace_alias returned after the namespace for an empty name.
  • Host::is_module_level of the React Compiler has no default body. Both hosts define it.

Relation to other open PRs

A defect of the module loader that the matrix met. The matrix builds each bundle into a directory of its own. With one shared directory, the three matrix tests failed on Windows 11 aarch64 with Cannot find module for a file that Bun.build had just written. The loader fails to import a file that is new in a directory it has read before. This is not a bundler defect. I handed it off with a repro, and the comment in unwrapped-require-matrix.ts names it.

Suites run. Release builds of main and of this PR: 74 bundler test files (bundler_*, esbuild/*, transpiler/*, bun-build-api, cli, metafile), 8,541 tests. This PR: 7,096 pass, 0 fail. Main: 40 fail, all of them new tests of this PR. Debug build, with assertions: bundler_cjs2esm (166 pass), bundler_npm, esbuild/dce, bundler_dynamic_import_dce (333 pass), bundler_jsx, bundler_cjs, bundler_minify, transpiler/react-compiler (116 pass), and the full matrix (0 unexpected cells of 28,152).

Self-review. Four rounds, and one automated review on this PR after the last one. The first round found a regression in the first version: a variable that stays lost its declaration when every read was of the form x.a.b and the write never ran. The count described above replaces the code that caused it. The fourth round found three regressions against main, and this revision has a fix and a test for each: an initializer that only folds to the call became a waiting variable (Cannot assign to import for var m = true && require("react"); m.foo = 1), a const of a case lost its declaration under --minify-syntax, and x[""] printed the variable. The same round asked for the this of (0, x.fn)() after a read-first rebind, for the debug assertions on the count, and for this text to say what stays as on main. The automated review asked for the write in a removed branch. Nothing that a round asked for is open.

…il its scope is visited

In an ESM bundle, a `require()` of a package on the CommonJS unwrap list
becomes `import * as ns`. For `var x = require("react")` the parser made
`x` that namespace and deleted the declarator while it visited the
declarator. An exported declaration lost its export, a `using`
declaration lost its disposal, a pattern read a placeholder, and a later
write or a second declaration of `x` went to the namespace object of the
package.

The declarator now stays, with the namespace as its value, until the
statements of the scope that declares `x` are visited. `x` becomes the
namespace, and the declarator goes, only if nothing assigns `x`,
declares it again, or can reach it through a direct eval or `with`.
Otherwise `x` stays a variable.

While `x` waits, `x.a` is an import item as before, and `x` stays
counted for each of these reads. When `x` becomes the namespace, the
parser takes those uses back. A read that is visited after a write to
`x` is a read of a property of the variable.

A `using` declaration keeps a real `require()` call. A function that
still holds the namespace of such a require() as a value is not handed
to the React Compiler, which cannot name that namespace.

The `E::RequireString::unwrapped_id` marker and its readers in the
printer and the linker are gone.

Status: draft. The pushed head is an earlier design that I no longer propose. This PR waits for a maintainer's choice of mechanism (the question is in the comments of this PR).

What happened: a self-review of a rework of this PR found that the fix is two changes of different weight.

  • The destructured, exported and using declarations need no new mechanism. They move to a separate, small PR that lands first.
  • A variable that is assigned after x = require("react") needs to know, at the declarator, about a write that comes later. That is what stays here.

How I reproduced the case that stays here (1.4.2, 1.4.3 and main give the wrong result):

mkdir -p node_modules/react
echo '{"name":"react","main":"index.js"}' > node_modules/react/package.json
echo 'exports.react = "react";' > node_modules/react/index.js

echo 'let a = require("react"); a = { react: "a2" }; console.log(a.react, require("react").react);' > entry.js
bun build entry.js --outfile=out.mjs && bun out.mjs
# unbundled: a2 react
# main: react react

With the real packages: require("@tanstack/react-query") (5.104.3) with --external react throws TypeError: Assignment to constant variable. at load in a bundle of main.

Walkthrough

The parser now tracks aliases of converted CommonJS require() calls and settles eligible aliases by scope. The linker and printer remove unwrapped-require metadata. Bundler tests cover alias reads, rebinding, scopes, and comparisons between unbundled and bundled output.

Changes

Require Alias Conversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Require conversion and parser contracts
src/ast/e.rs, src/ast/symbol.rs, src/js_parser/parser.rs, src/js_parser/p.rs, src/js_parser/visit/visit_expr.rs, src/bun_core/util.rs
The require representation drops its unwrapped marker. Parser transposition returns namespace identifiers for unwrapped requires. Symbol flags add redeclaration tracking.
Alias tracking and scope settlement
src/js_parser/p.rs, src/js_parser/fold.rs, src/js_parser/visit/mod.rs, src/js_parser/visit/visit_stmt.rs, src/js_parser/parse/parse_entry.rs, src/js_parser/react_compiler_host.rs
The parser records eligible require aliases, checks property accesses, and settles aliases by scope. Settlement updates declarations and use counts. React Compiler handling recognizes converted require namespaces.
Linker and printer require metadata
src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs, src/bundler/linker_context/convertStmtsForChunk.rs, src/js_printer/lib.rs, src/js_parser/parse/parse_entry.rs
The linker and printer remove the unwrapped-require metadata parameter and special handling. Require initializers no longer use redundant default updates.
Alias transformation tests
test/bundler/bundler_cjs2esm.test.ts, test/bundler/unwrapped-require-matrix.ts
Tests cover alias reads, rebinding, scopes, and related transformation cases. A generated matrix compares unbundled output with plain and minified bundles.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked that the removed was_unwrapped_require / unwrapped_id / is_immediately_assigned_to_decl plumbing has no remaining readers anywhere in src (printer, linker and parser callers all updated), that the new require_stays_call flag is both set (visit_decls and the SLocal arm of visit_stmt, for using) and read (transpose_require), and that widening SymbolFlags to u16 is still covered by the retained size_of::<Symbol>() <= 48 compile-time assert.

Extended reasoning...

The change reworks how the parser folds x = require("pkg") for unwrap-list packages into an import namespace, deferring the fold until the declaring scope is visited, and removes the old unwrapped_id marker from E::RequireString through the printer and linker. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Four confirmed findings are posted inline, so a human review is already signalled; this note only records the dead-code and liveness sweeps that came back clean.

…piler check

The check for a namespace that the body still holds started after the
parameters were visited. It now starts when the candidate is entered.

Code review found no issues

No high-confidence issues detected in this change.

A `let` or `const` of a block that nothing rebinds becomes the import
namespace again, as at the top of a function. The statements of a
`switch` are settled after its last `case`.

A `using` declaration always stays: its value is the namespace. The
require() is no longer kept as a call for it.

Inside a function that the React Compiler can compile, a require()
variable stays a variable. The compiler host reports the namespace of
an unwrapped require() as a binding of the module, so no function has
to be left uncompiled for it.

The differential matrix gains block scopes and two orders in which the
read is visited before the rebind, with the known gap for those orders
written as a rule. A release build runs all 26,496 cells.
…ome the namespace

The variable is settled as in any other function. A variable that
stays after a read took it for the namespace leaves its function
uncompiled: the read prints the symbol of the variable, which the
compiler would declare again.

The module's one-part layout is one predicate, `module_is_one_part`.
…atrix

On Windows the import of a second file from the output directory of an
earlier bundle failed with `Cannot find module`. The matrix tests take
the time limit of the CI runner, as `itBundled` does.

🟡 Minor · Preserve pending-alias property reads as side-effectful local accesses. · fold.rs:209-314

src/js_parser/fold.rs:209-314
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve pending-alias property reads as side-effectful local accesses.

The pending-alias path in src/js_parser/fold.rs replaces x.g with an import-item identifier before wr() is visited. revoke_require_alias only adds NamespaceAlias metadata. It cannot restore the original x.g expression.

In var x = require("react"); wr(); x.g; function wr() { x = mk(out); }, the getter can be removed as an unused import-item read. Unbundled execution appends "Ngetter" to out, but bundled output can omit that effect.

Keep the property read as a local EDot until alias settlement, or preserve equivalent side-effect information for the generated item. Do not change the namespace-value rebinding behavior.

Update the pending-alias branch in the namespace property folding logic so reads

Ensure the getter effect is retained when the local is rebound, without changing
namespace-value rebinding behavior.

`bundlerTestTimeout` is the rule that `itBundled` already used: the CI
runner sets the limit, and a local debug build has none.

On the finding outside the diff (src/js_parser/fold.rs, a read that is visited before a later rebind): this is the known gap that the description lists under "Known gap" in the notes. It stays open in this PR on purpose.

  • The program in the finding (var x = require("react"); wr(); x.g; function wr() { x = mk(out); }) is one cell of the matrix (..._stmt_top_hoistedWriter). knownGap in test/bundler/unwrapped-require-matrix.ts names it, so a change of this behaviour in either direction fails a test.
  • Main is further from the source for the same program: it ignores the rebind and reads the package, so the read, the call and the getter of the new value are all lost. With this PR the value of the read is right, and the getter runs when the read is inside a function. The read is removed only when it is a statement at the top level of the module.
  • The two cheap fixes move a cost to every variable that nothing rebinds. To keep the read non-removable stops tree shaking of unused top-level statements that read such a variable. To keep the wrapper of (0, x.fn)() costs 4 B for each call of that form under --minify, which is how TypeScript prints every call through a CommonJS import.
  • The complete fix is to leave the read a property access until the scope is settled and to let the linker bind it. bundler: keep a read off a require() / import() local a property access until the linker binds it #45296 does that for the import() tracker. It is the place to close this gap for both trackers.
  • Reach: in 7,772 such declarators of 304 installed package versions, 4 have a read before the rebind (the React 19.3.1 development jsx runtimes), and none of them has a form that the gap changes.

No new issues were found in this update; 1 finding from earlier reviews is still open above.

Still open from earlier reviews (1):

…unction revokes a read

The decision was stored in `react_compiler_may_replace_body`, which the
end of each nested function restores. It now has a flag of its own that
lasts until the next candidate starts.

…case can read its variable

An initializer that folds to a require() (`true && require("react")`,
`(0, require("react"))` under minify) is a variable again, as on main.

In a `case` list the single-use inliner leaves a variable that still
waits: a later case can read it, and the switch settles it after its
last case.

A read of a variable that stays, which was not called as `x.fn()` in
the source, prints as `(0, x.fn)()`: the call keeps `this` undefined.
The item symbols of such a variable carry a new flag for the printer.

`x[""]` prints as written: `print_namespace_alias` no longer returns
after the namespace for an empty alias. That sentinel had no producer.

A debug build fails when the use counts that `require_aliases` takes
back are higher than the counts. `Host::is_module_level` has no default
body: both hosts define it.

The matrix packages tell `x.fn()` from `(0, x.fn)()`, and the matrix
reads `x[""]`: 28,152 cells. The known gap is now an unused read that
is a statement of the module (24 cells), plus 28 minified cells that are
the same on main.

…quire() variable

A write that the parser visits in dead control flow never runs. It no
longer makes a variable that waits in `require_aliases` a variable: the
variable becomes the namespace, as on main.

`let React = require("react"); if (process.env.NODE_ENV !== "production")
React = Object.assign({}, React); console.log(React.version)` with
`--production` is 855 B again. It was 7,759 B before this commit.

The matrix rule for a call through a comma now covers a write in a
removed branch: the variable is the namespace there, and `minify` drops
the `(0, ...)` as it does on main.
