Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the new on_abort running close_without_callbacks on &Terminal with no keep_alive: it is the same shape as the existing asyncDispose path, and the wrapper's m_ctx ref is only released from finalize, which cannot run under the synchronous stop sweep, so the I/O-side deref_() calls cannot drop the last ref mid-close. The re-entrant abort_handle.leave() in close_internal is a no-op during the sweep because stop_handles unlinks the handle before invoking on_abort.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds an AbortHandle to Terminal so a Bun.ModuleGraph context's stop closes terminals it opened, following the pattern Subprocess, FileSink and others already use; it touches unsafe Rust lifecycle code in src/runtime/api/bun/Terminal.rs but no security-sensitive surface. The lifetime of this across the abort callback and the re-entrant leave() were traced through ScriptExecutionContext.rs and found consistent with the pre-existing dispose path.

I reviewed the updated PR (including 0b11a78, which addresses the earlier note about disposing the graph on every exit of the io test) and found no bugs. Because the change adds an unsafe abort-callback path to Terminal's native lifecycle, a human look at src/runtime/api/bun/Terminal.rs is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- Abort-handle balance: armed only after the writer, reader, wrapper and callbacks are fully set up, so every
init_terminalerror return happens before arming;leave()runs on the firstclose_internalon all paths (close, dispose, finalize, Drop, writer error) andAbortHandle::dropdisarms as a backstop. - The abort callback dereferencing
*mut Terminal:close_without_callbackssets FINALIZED before closing, so no exit/data callback runs, and the wrapper'sm_ctxref (released only infinalize) keeps the allocation alive past the writer/reader derefs — matches the pre-existingasync_disposepath. - The dedupe of
abandon_from_spawn/async_disposeontoclose_without_callbacksis byte-identical to the two removed bodies; the singlecreate_from_spawncaller was updated; theas_graph_context+arm_ownershape matches Subprocess, FileSink and H2FrameParser.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches src/runtime/api/bun/Terminal.rs (an AbortHandle field, an impl_abort_handle_owner! callback, arming in init_terminal, leave() in close_internal, and a shared close_without_callbacks), one call-site update in js_bun_spawn_bindings.rs, a one-line doc edit, and two new tests covering the negative contract (no callbacks fired, host terminal untouched, leftover-code terminal closed next turn). It touches no auth, crypto or input-parsing surface; the sensitive part is unsafe raw-pointer lifecycle code in a refcounted native object. The diff is small (40 native lines), follows the established sibling pattern exactly, and the only earlier reviewer thread was followed by a commit that plausibly addressed it, but memory-lifecycle changes in Bun's native code are the category reviewers block most, so a human confirmation is warranted rather than an unattended approve.
What does this PR do?
A
Bun.Terminalthat aBun.ModuleGraph's code opened (withnew Bun.Terminal()or withBun.spawn({ terminal: { ... } })) was not closed bygraph.dispose(). Its pty file descriptors stayed open, and because an open terminal holds its JS wrapper strongly and the wrapper holds the graph's callbacks, the graph's modules were never collected.Cause.
Terminalnever joined the context of the script that opened it, so a context that stops had nothing to tell it.Fix.
Terminalembeds anAbortHandle, likeSubprocess,FileSink,UDPSocketand the others.init_terminalarms it in the caller's context when that is a graph's (asBun.spawndoes for the child), andclose_internalleaves the context. When the context stops, the terminal is closed the wayawait usingcloses it: the wrapper goes weak, nodataorexitcallback follows, every descriptor is closed. A terminal that leftover code of a disposed graph opens is closed on the next turn of the loop, as for the other kinds. That close sequence existed twice (
async_dispose,abandon_from_spawn); both and the new caller now shareclose_without_callbacks.A terminal the host opened is not armed and behaves as before.
docs/runtime/module-graph.mdxlists terminals among what belongs to a graph. How did you verify your code works?
Two new tests, both failing on Bun 1.4.3 and passing with this change (debug build):
module-graph-io.test.ts, "dispose() closes the terminals the graph opened, not the host's, and calls none of their callbacks": a constructed terminal, one made inline byBun.spawn, the host's own, and one that leftover code opens afterdispose(). On 1.4.3closedisfalsefor both of the graph's.module-graph-gc.test.ts, "a Bun.Terminal that is open when its graph is disposed goes with the graph". On 1.4.3:/proc/self/fdentries that point at a pty, for a graph that opens one terminal:dispose()Also run on the debug build:
module-graph-io.test.ts,module-graph-gc.test.ts,terminal.test.ts(162 pass) andterminal-spawn.test.ts(16 pass, 2 skip). Windows is not run locally.
