Problem

  • A lockfile mounted as a single file (compose: ./bun.lock:/app/bun.lock) is a mount point. Linux refuses to rename onto or unlink it. bun add fails with EBUSY: Device or resource busy: Failed to replace old lockfile with new lockfile on disk (rename) and leaves package.json unwritten.
  • Cause: replace_in_cwd (src/install/lockfile.rs) writes bun.lock, bun.lockb and yarn.lock, and makes every rename error fatal. save_lockfile does the same for the unlinkat of an empty lockfile.

Fix

  • On EBUSY on Linux, replace_in_cwd writes into the existing file (pwrite, then ftruncate). A failed write puts the old bytes back.
  • bun remove of the last dependency saves a lockfile without packages. A frozen install accepts it when package.json has no dependencies.
  • A bun.lockb that a text save cannot delete gets a warn: line.
  • Verified: test/cli/install/bun-lock.test.ts (22 new tests, 21 fail on main). Also the frozen-lockfile, migration and bun-install suites.

Background

  • A bind-mounted file can change its content, but not its directory entry.
  • bun saves a lockfile through a temp file and rename(2): a reader never sees half a file.
  • Considered the fallback in move_file_z_with_handle: the transpiler cache and bun build --compile rename through it too, and it lacks the bytes.

Downsides

  • The in-place save is not atomic: a concurrent reader can see mixed bytes. It runs only after a refused rename.
  • Per command in a plain directory: +0 syscalls, +0 calls, at most +12 instructions. Release .text: +1,792 B.
  • Outside mounts: Saved yarn.lock prints after the write, and a frozen install accepts a lockfile without packages.
Notes

What each command does on a mounted lockfile now. Each case runs in a plain directory and with the lockfile as a mount point. The two results must be equal.

  • bun add, bun install after a package.json edit, --lockfile-only, bun remove of one dependency, bun pm trust, bun patch --commit, an install over a bun.lock that does not parse, and bun add with a bun.lockb: the lockfile is saved in place, exit 0, same inode.
  • bun remove of the last dependency, with bun.lock and with bun.lockb: the lockfile is saved without packages ("packages": {}), exit 0. A repeat install and a frozen install read it and do not write it.
  • bun install --lockfile-only that empties a mounted bun.lock: the same save, and the last line of stdout is Saved bun.lock (1 package).
  • bun install --yarn with a mounted yarn.lock: saved in place.
  • bun install --save-text-lockfile with a mounted bun.lockb: bun.lock is saved, bun.lockb stays, and bun prints warn: failed to delete bun.lockb after saving bun.lock: EBUSY. The next install reads bun.lock and does not warn.
  • A read-only mount: exit 1 with EROFS: Read-only file system: Failed to replace old lockfile with new lockfile on disk (open). The host file is unchanged and no temp file stays.
  • A write into the mount that fails part-way: exit 1 with the error of the call that failed. The lockfile has its old bytes again. If bun cannot write those back either, it also prints failed to restore bun.lock, the file may be incomplete.

Why the write does not truncate first. Readers take no lock. A write that truncates first leaves a window in which a second bun reads an empty or short lockfile, prints Ignoring lockfile, and resolves again. The form here (pwrite from offset 0, then ftruncate) never leaves the file empty. A reader gets the old bytes, the new bytes, or a mix of the two.

Why EBUSY is the gate. Linux returns EBUSY for rename(2) onto and unlink(2) of a mount point. The errno of the call that already failed is the detector, so no save gets a new stat. On Windows EBUSY is a sharing violation, so the gate is Linux and Android only. A network filesystem can also answer EBUSY for a file in use (a review named SMB and NFSv4). That case is not tested here. The code path is the same: the directory entry cannot be replaced, so bun writes into the file, and reports the error of that write if it fails.

Other designs

  • The fallback in move_file_z_with_handle: Tmpfile::finish (transpiler cache, compile cache) and bun build --compile --outfile rename through it. A cache entry or an executable that is written in place is another contract. The helper would also have to read the temp file back, where replace_in_cwd still holds the bytes.
  • A statx check for a mount root after the EBUSY: it needs Linux 5.8, and every other refusal would fail as before.
  • Always write lockfiles in place: every save on every platform loses the atomic replace.

Measurements (release builds of main 5866b5f without and with this diff, linux-x64, taken before the last merge of main)

  • Syscalls in a plain directory, strace of the main thread, 3 runs each, six commands: bun add with bun.lock and with bun.lockb, bun remove of the last dependency, bun install --yarn, bun install --save-text-lockfile from a bun.lockb, bun install --frozen-lockfile. Result: +0 calls outside the scheduling-dependent ones (futex, epoll, mmap and similar), and the same calls on the lockfiles in the same order. Two message writes moved: Saved yarn.lock now follows the rename, and Saved lockfile now precedes the unlinkat of bun.lockb.
  • Mounted bun.lock (real bind mount), after the refused renameat: close and unlink of the temp file as before, then 7 calls: openat O_RDWR, fstat, two pread64, pwrite64, ftruncate, close.
  • Instructions in the bodies of the five functions the diff touches (gdb single-step, callees excluded): bun add 271 to 271, bun remove of the last dependency 78 to 84, bun install --yarn 173 to 181, --save-text-lockfile 264 to 263, an install without a lockfile 432 to 444, bun add with bun.lockb 995 to 999. Conditional branches: +0, +0, +1, +0, +2, +0. Calls out of those bodies: +0 in all six, so no added allocation.
  • Release binary (size): .text +1,792 B (81,071,045 to 81,072,837), data and bss +0, file +4,096 B. By function (nm -S): replace_in_cwd +1,136 B, save_lockfile +572 B, write_yarn_lock_with_progress +19 B, new frozen_lockfile_had_changes 99 B, create_new_lockfile_and_enqueue -104 B, save_to_disk_as -65 B against save_to_disk.

The frozen install change. bun pm migrate can also write a lockfile without packages. Main rejected it in a frozen install before it compared anything, also when package.json had no dependencies. One pinned snapshot recorded that: arborist fixtures prune-lockfile in test/cli/install/migration/__snapshots__/npm-arborist.test.ts.snap (exit code 1, now 0). A lockfile that fails to parse is still rejected at once. A lockfile without packages is still rejected at once when package.json has dependencies, with the same message as on main and before anything is resolved.

Not changed

  • bun build --compile --outfile onto a mounted file still fails (failed to rename ... EBUSY). bun test --coverage --coverage-reporter=lcov onto a mounted coverage/lcov.info still fails (EBUSY: Device or resource busy: Failed to write lcov.info (rename)). Neither leaves a temp file.
  • A directory mounted at the lockfile path still fails with EISDIR: Is a directory: Failed to replace old lockfile with new lockfile on disk (rename).
  • A read-only project directory with a writable mounted lockfile still fails when the temp file is created (EROFS: Read-only file system: failed to create temporary file to save lockfile (open)).
  • With --save-text-lockfile and a mounted bun.lockb, --lockfile-only that empties the lockfile saves bun.lockb without packages and ends with Checked 1 package (no changes). Its last line can name only bun.lock.
  • Windows and macOS: no change.

Tests. The cases run twice, in a plain directory and with the lockfile as a mount point, and the two results must be equal. A small LD_PRELOAD library answers EBUSY for rename and unlink of the named files, like the kernel does for a mount point, so the cases run on glibc Linux without privileges. It can also fail the first calls of ftruncate, for the cases of a write that stops part-way. Two more tests use a real bind mount in a user and mount namespace (unshare -U -r -m), one of them read-only. They are skipped where the machine does not allow that. Four tests cover the frozen install with a lockfile without packages. The mount cases are not concurrent: side by side on a debug build they run into the default timeout.

History. The first revision put the fallback in save_to_disk and write_yarn_lock. #44968 then made replace_in_cwd the one lockfile writer, so the fallback moved there and the yarn.lock copy went away. Review comments on the first revision asked for the old bytes to come back after a failed write and for the frozen install to fail before the resolve. Both are in this revision. A second round asked for a message when the old bytes cannot be written back, and for --lockfile-only to say that it saved the emptied lockfile. Both are in too. A later merge of main had one conflict, in a doc comment, and brings the fix of a Windows test that this branch did not have (#45588). Other open PRs near this code: #39689, #41736.

Suites run with the debug build. test/cli/install/: bun-lock, bun-install, bun-add, bun-remove, bun-update, bun-patch, bun-pm, bun-link, bun-dedupe, bun-workspaces, bun-lockb, migrate-bun-lockb-v2, lockfile-only, config-version, overrides, catalogs, the four frozen-lockfile-* files, and the ten files in migration/. Some runs hit the 5 s default timeout of the debug build in concurrent tests that this diff does not touch. Each of those passes when it runs again. These runs were before the last commit, which changes only the paths after a refused rename or unlink. bun-lock ran again after it.

Review. A design review ran before the code was written. I read the final diff against that design by hand. A second review pass over the final diff did not complete.

…kfile is a mount point

A lockfile that is mounted as a single file (a compose volume
`./bun.lock:/app/bun.lock`) is a mount point. Linux refuses to rename
onto it and to unlink it with EBUSY, so every command that saves the
lockfile failed after node_modules was written and before package.json
was.

- Lockfile::save_to_disk: when the rename is refused with EBUSY on
Linux, write the bytes it still holds over the existing file (open
  without O_TRUNC, pwrite, ftruncate).
- save_lockfile: when the emptied lockfile cannot be unlinked, save a
lockfile without packages into the same file. Warn when bun.lockb
cannot be deleted after a text save.
- write_yarn_lock: same in-place write for yarn.lock. Remove the temp
file on every failure, and print "Saved yarn.lock" after the write.
- A frozen install no longer rejects a lockfile that loaded and whose
root has no dependencies before it compares it with package.json.

Status

Reproduced on main with the lockfile bind-mounted as a single file. In a user and mount namespace (unshare -U -r -m), run mount --bind host/bun.lock app/bun.lock, then bun add <tarball> in app. strace shows renameat(".lock-<hex>.tmp", "bun.lock") = -1 EBUSY. bun exits 1 with EBUSY: Device or resource busy: Failed to replace old lockfile with new lockfile on disk (rename). With the src/ of main, 21 of the 22 new tests in test/cli/install/bun-lock.test.ts fail. With this change all 22 pass.

Walkthrough

Lockfile saves now handle selected mount-point errors, empty lockfiles, and binary-lockfile cleanup. Frozen-lockfile validation and Yarn save output timing have also changed. Tests cover simulated and real mount behavior and frozen installs.

Changes

Lockfile handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lockfile save fallback
src/install/lockfile.rs, test/cli/install/bun-lock.test.ts
On Linux and Android, saving attempts an in-place write after replacement fails with EBUSY. Failed writes can trigger restoration. Tests cover simulated mount errors and writable or read-only bind mounts.
Package-manager save handling
src/install/PackageManager/PackageManagerDirectories.rs, src/install/PackageManager/install_with_manager.rs, test/cli/install/bun-lock.test.ts
Empty-lockfile deletion can fall back to saving when packages remain. Binary-lockfile deletion occurs after lockfile checks and progress handling. Yarn save output now appears after progress handling.
Frozen-lockfile validation
src/install/PackageManager/install_with_manager.rs, test/cli/install/bun-lock.test.ts
Frozen installs reject lockfile load errors and loaded lockfiles with no root dependencies when the manifest declares dependencies. Tests cover dependency-free and dependency-declaring manifests.

Bun can now save lockfiles that are bind-mounted as single files on Linux. It also accepts empty lockfiles in frozen installs when the manifest has no dependencies. One small gap remains. In a dependency-free project, a frozen install may not detect that trustedDependencies changed. This is a narrow edge case, and the change is otherwise reasonable to merge with that follow-up noted.

… lockfile writer

main now writes bun.lock, bun.lockb and yarn.lock through
`replace_in_cwd`, so the fallback lives there: when the rename is
refused with EBUSY on Linux, it writes the bytes over the existing file
(pwrite, then ftruncate). A write that fails puts the old bytes back.

- save_lockfile: an emptied lockfile that cannot be unlinked is saved
without packages into the same file. A bun.lockb that cannot be
deleted after a text save gets a warning.
- A frozen install accepts a loaded lockfile whose root has no
dependencies when package.json has none. It still fails at once,
before any resolve, when package.json has dependencies.
- "Saved yarn.lock" prints after the write.

I reviewed the latest push (541664a) and didn't find any bugs; the two nits from the previous round (the --lockfile-only return value and the errno formatting idiom) are addressed. Because this changes --frozen-lockfile semantics for every project and adds a non-atomic write path to the one lockfile writer, a human maintainer's look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • write_in_place / replace_in_cwd fallback: File closes on Drop, the restore path re-truncates to the old length, and the error from the in-place write (not the original EBUSY) is what gets reported; checked bun_sys on Linux goes through libc renameat/unlinkat/ftruncate, so the LD_PRELOAD shim actually intercepts them.
  • Frozen-lockfile rework: traced the needs_new_lockfile path for a loaded lockfile with a root of zero deps; the early crash now only fires on LoadResult::Err or when package.json gained dependencies, and the comparison at the later frozen check still runs for the zero-deps case. The flipped prune-lockfile snapshot matches a fixture whose package.json has no dependencies.
  • save_lockfile EBUSY arm: the packages.len() > 0 guard keeps a lockfile with no root from being serialized, and the moved bun.lockb unlink still only runs after a successful text save.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches the lockfile save path in src/install/lockfile.rs (new is_mount_point_error, write_in_place, save_to_disk_as), the empty-lockfile deletion arm and bun.lockb cleanup in PackageManagerDirectories.rs, and the frozen-lockfile early-exit in install_with_manager.rs, plus ~700 lines of tests including a compiled LD_PRELOAD shim and a real bind-mount suite gated on unshare. No security-sensitive surface (no auth, crypto, or untrusted parsing) is touched; the in-place write only runs after the kernel already refused the rename with EBUSY on Linux. The latest commit addressed both nits from the prior review, and this run found no new defects. Deferral rather than approval because the frozen-lockfile behavior change applies to all users (a root-only lockfile now passes a frozen install when package.json agrees, flipping a pinned snapshot), the fallback deliberately trades atomic replace for an in-place overwrite, and the EBUSY gate can also fire on network filesystems, which are design calls a maintainer should weigh.

I re-reviewed the latest push and found no new bugs; the points raised on earlier versions (restoring the old bytes on a failed in-place write, failing a frozen install before resolution when the lockfile root has no dependencies, the --lockfile-only return value, the errno formatting idiom) are now addressed in the code. Because this changes --frozen-lockfile semantics and adds a non-atomic lockfile write path, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • write_in_place in src/install/lockfile.rs: pwrite-then-ftruncate order, restore of the old bytes on failure, fd released by File's Drop, and the EBUSY-only gate limited to Linux/Android.
  • The EBUSY arm of save_lockfile: it only runs when a root package exists, re-save of unchanged bytes is a no-op, and the wrote && delete_format == save_format return matches what --lockfile-only reports.
  • The frozen check in create_new_lockfile_and_enqueue: Err still fails at once, a loaded root with no deps plus a package.json with deps fails right after root.parse, and the no-deps case falls through to the existing comparison; the prune-lockfile snapshot exit-code change (1 to 0) follows from that and the fixture's dependency-less package.json.
  • Tests: LD_PRELOAD shim and real bind-mount suites are skipIf-gated, drain pipes concurrently, use await using, and cover both lockfile formats, read-only mounts, and both write-failure paths.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches the lockfile save path in src/install/lockfile.rs (new in-place write fallback on EBUSY), the empty-lockfile and bun.lockb-deletion handling in src/install/PackageManager/PackageManagerDirectories.rs, the frozen-lockfile check in src/install/PackageManager/install_with_manager.rs, plus ~700 lines of new tests and one snapshot exit-code update. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the risk is in correctness of lockfile persistence and a user-visible change to when --frozen-lockfile accepts a lockfile. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings and every prior inline concern is visibly addressed in the current code, but the semantic change to frozen installs and the deliberately non-atomic write path are design trade-offs a maintainer should confirm, so defer rather than approve. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files.
