What this does

Supports JavaScriptCore's immutableGlobals option (oven-sh/WebKit#797). There is no new flag or API: it is set with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals, for example

BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals='*,Headers,Response,Bun' bun app.ts

The value is a comma-separated list. * is every built-in of JavaScriptCore's own, named or not (Array.prototype, %TypedArray%, the iterator prototypes, Math, parseInt, console, ...). Any other entry is the name of a global, so Bun's own globals are covered only when named; globalThis is the global object itself. Each listed object stops changing when its global object is created, together with the functions it holds (methods, getters, setters) and, for a constructor, its prototype. Property attributes stay as they are, so an object that inherits from a built-in can still shadow its properties by assignment (this.name = ... in an Error subclass, obj.toString = ...).

Unset, which is the default, nothing is immutable.

What Bun creates on first use

Bun creates most of its classes on first use, after the list has been applied. Each is made immutable as it is created if the global it belongs to is covered:

The class Belongs to Examples
has a global name itself: covered if that name is listed, or globalThis is Request, URL, EventTarget
serves one global that global the iterators of Headers, FormData and URLSearchParams; the async iterator of ReadableStream; HTMLRewriter's Element, Comment, TextChunk, DocType, DocEnd, EndTag and attribute iterator; what setTimeout, setInterval and setImmediate return
anything else Bun the Bun.CookieMap iterator, the stream sinks and their controllers, Subprocess, the servers, ServerWebSocket, the sockets, fs.Stats, crypto.Hash, the prototypes of require and of errors with a code

The hook is in Bun::createClassStructure, which the setup of nearly every class goes through (287 call sites, the classes of the binding generator among them), so a new class is covered without anyone thinking of it. The second row is a table next to it. Five prototypes that no such structure points at call Bun::didCreatePrototype() themselves (require, require.resolve, errors with a code, S3Error, the parent of PublicKeyObject.prototype). A constructor that a getter on the prototype creates (AbortSignal, Headers, ...) is covered as it is created if the prototype is.

Nothing a script can change decides any of this. Whether an owner is covered is answered from the list, not from the global's value (globalThis.Headers = {}). Whether a class has a global name is answered from the global object's static tables, or by that global's prototype being this very object, not by a property of that name being there (globalThis.Subprocess = 1, or a DOM shim's Element).

The objects that are part of the API of Bun or process and are created on first use are covered with their owner: Bun.password, dns, semver, TOML, YAML, JSONC, JSON5, JSONL, XML, markdown, CSRF, unsafe, secrets; process.versions, release, features, report, finalization. State is not: Bun.env, Bun.argv, Bun.stdout, process.argv.

BUN_JSC_logImmutableGlobals=1 prints what is left mutable and why, to stderr:

$ BUN_JSC_logImmutableGlobals=1 BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=Headers,noSuchGlobal bun -e 'new FormData().entries(); new Bun.CookieMap()'
immutableGlobals: noSuchGlobal is not the name of an object in this global object
immutableGlobals: left mutable: the prototype of FormData, which belongs to FormData
immutableGlobals: left mutable: the prototype of FormData Iterator, which belongs to FormData
immutableGlobals: left mutable: the prototype of CookieMap, which belongs to Bun

Changes

  • The trigger. Zig::GlobalObject::finishCreation calls applyImmutableGlobalsOption() last, after addBuiltinGlobals, so the list can name Bun's globals and what Bun adds to built-ins (Error.captureStackTrace, console.write) is covered. NodeVMGlobalObject::finishCreation does the same for node:vm contexts. Workers and ShadowRealms are Zig::GlobalObjects.
  • Error.captureStackTrace(object) throws a TypeError for an object with immutable properties, as JavaScriptCore's own does. It defined stack with putDirect, which is refused without a word.
  • Built-in modules no longer assign Error.stackTraceLimit or Error.prepareStackTrace. They saved the value, assigned, captured and restored, which throws when Error is immutable. node:repl asked first whether the property is writable, but an immutable object still reports writable: true.
    • util.getCallSites() and isInsideNodeModules() (url.parse()'s deprecation warning) use a new native function, captureCallSites(frameLimit, startFunction), which returns what Error.prepareStackTrace would be given. It is the first half of computeErrorInfoWithPrepareStackTrace, split out. getCallSites() now also works inside a user's prepareStackTrace (it returned a string), with a frozen Error (it threw) and with a non-writable limit (which capped it).
    • AssertionError and node:repl's SIGINT handler want a limit of 0 for a moment. They use JSGlobalObject::setStackTraceLimitOverride(), new in the WebKit PR, which takes the property's place while it is set. AssertionError puts it back in a finally; it left the limit at 0 if rendering the message threw. (That try is the whole of the diff in assertion_error.ts; the rest is indentation.)
    • --trace-env-js-stack widened the limit by 3 to make up for its own frames. It now captures from below the Proxy trap. It printed Error.stackTraceLimit + 1 frames of a deep stack and now prints Error.stackTraceLimit.
  • spyOn() throws a TypeError for a target with immutable properties. It returned a mock that was never installed.
  • Six setters that keep their value outside the object's properties: Bun.main, process.argv, process.execArgv, process.title, process.debugPort, process.exitCode. JavaScriptCore refuses an assignment to an immutable Bun, but other routes reach the setter and changed Bun.main: Object.create(Bun).main = x, new Proxy(Bun, {}).main = x, Reflect.set(Object.create(Bun), "main", x, Bun), and calling the setter from the property's descriptor. They now throw whenever their owner has immutable properties.
  • What Bun adds to console kept state on console itself, which * covers.
    • console.write() kept its writer in a private property of console. It is now on Bun.stdout, the file it writes to.
    • console[Symbol.asyncIterator] replaced itself on first use, to keep what it had read for the next loop. That is now on Bun.stdin, and the property no longer changes.
    • console.Console replaces its getter with the constructor on first use. That is a property materializing, so it is allowed to, and the constructor is covered with console. The write was refused, so each read made a new constructor.
  • The default Error.prepareStackTrace function is returned by a native getter, where JavaScriptCore cannot see it, so Bun makes it immutable with Error.
  • node:vm: NodeVMGlobalObject::getOwnPropertySlot used the context's special sandbox before there is one, for globalThis and for a name the global object does not have. The list is looked up during creation, so vm.createContext(vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY) crashed with almost any list.
  • crypto.subtle is put on Crypto.prototype when crypto is first read, which was refused without a word if Crypto was listed. It is a property materializing, so it is allowed to.
  • node:test's Date mock assigned Date.prototype.toUTCString to itself.
  • WEBKIT_VERSION is the preview build of [JSC] Options::immutableGlobals: built-ins and listed globals, with the functions they hold, become immutable when a global object is created WebKit#797, to be replaced by the merge commit. That branch is the commit main pins plus that PR.

Not covered

Some of Bun's own features work by changing an object that can now be listed. With that object listed they fail, most with TypeError: Attempted to assign to readonly property.

Listed What fails
* (Error) --stack-trace-limit=N, which assigns Error.stackTraceLimit at startup
* (console) --trace-events-enabled and the node.console trace category, which replace console.count, countReset, time, timeLog and timeEnd
process every node:worker_threads worker (it replaces process.umask and others as it starts), a node:cluster worker's disconnect (process.channel = null), --trace-exit (process.exit), --trace-env (process.env), node:domain (process.domain), process._exiting
Bun $.nothrow(), $.throws(), $.cwd(), $.env(), which set defaults on Bun.$
globalThis node:perf_hooks (patches Performance.prototype), require() in bun -e, gc with --expose-gc, the globals of bun test, onmessage = ... in a worker, node:worker_threads in a worker (globalThis.console = ...). In a node:vm context it does nothing: NodeVMGlobalObject has write hooks of its own.

Left mutable whatever is listed, because Bun's own code changes them after they are created, and named by BUN_JSC_logImmutableGlobals: the prototype of process (node:events puts EventEmitter.prototype above it as it loads), of crypto.ECDH, of node:zlib's native handle, of net.SocketAddress and net.BlockList (node:crypto, node:zlib and node:quic add to them as they load), and of expect()'s classes (expect.extend()). Also Bun.FFI: bun:ffi deletes three functions from it as it loads. Classes that built-in modules define in JavaScript (EventEmitter, stream.Readable, net.Socket, the shell's ShellOutput) are ordinary objects of no global and are not covered.

Programs are affected in the same way, which is the point of the option, but two cases are common: React 19.3.0's development JSX runtime assigns Error.stackTraceLimit in jsxDEV (19.2.0's does not), and tests spyOn(console, "log"). Both throw under *.

With *,Bun,process every built-in module loads, node:quic included, which is a test.

An existing test that assumed a context dies

test/js/node/vm/vm.test.ts, "a FinalizationRegistry cleanup job is dropped when its context dies before the job runs", drops four contexts, collects, and required that none of their jobs ran. On Alpine aarch64 one of the four survives the collection with this branch, 30 runs of 30 with the binary of build 125205; its job then runs, as it should. With the binary of the merge base (build 125192) it is 0 of 30, and the same context survives there too once the fixture is changed slightly (a console.error between the steps). Nothing in this PR holds the context. What holds it, from a run of the CI binary under gdb in an arm64 Alpine container:

  • Heap snapshot (generateHeapSnapshotForDebugging() after the fullGC()). 630 cells are reachable from no reported root. The first of them in visiting order is FinalizationRegistry.prototype.unregister of the dropped context, at 0x5508e6ea400: no roots entry, and its one incoming edge is from that context's own FinalizationRegistry.prototype. It leads to its realm. (The context has a roots entry, "Output": node:vm's weak map from sandbox to context, visited once the sandbox is marked.)
  • The stack word. A breakpoint on ConservativeRoots::genericAddSpan dumped each range the collector scans: the saved registers and [0xffffffffb910, 0xfffffffff188), nothing else. One word in them points into one of those cells and leads to the context: 0xffffffffc270 holds 0x5508e6ea401, that function's address plus one. genericAddPointer aligns a pointer into the middle of a cell down to the cell.
  • The frame. By the frame pointer chain, 0xffffffffc270 is x29 - 0x20 of JSC::VM::drainMicrotasks(). The function only ever stores one byte there (sturb w8, [x29, #-0x20], w8 = 0 or 1): it is the flag of a std::optional<VMEntryScope>, and the seven bytes after it are padding that nothing writes. They hold what an earlier, shorter-lived frame left at that address, and the flag turned its 00 into 01. The frame is at the same address in each turn of the event loop; two turns earlier the word was 0x5508de94101.

So which pointer is in that padding depends on the code that ran before, and this PR changes that code. The test now states its condition: it holds a WeakRef to each dropped context, requires that at least one died, and requires that no job of a context that died ran. On that machine it passes 30 of 30 with both binaries. It still fails without the fix it is for: Bun 1.4.2 crashes on it.

Tests

test/js/bun/jsc/immutable-globals.test.ts, 36 tests, each in a subprocess: what * and names cover and what they leave alone; a walk from every standard global that requires each object and function it reaches to be non-extensible; globalThis; node:vm contexts, a worker and a ShadowRealm; each change above with the option set and, where behavior must not change, unset; what is created on first use, with each owner listed on its own, all of them, and none, so that nothing is covered by the wrong name. "Built-in modules do not assign ..." needs no option: it replaces both properties with accessors that record writes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore the stack-trace limit override in a finally block.

setStackTraceLimitOverride(0) changes per-global state. The override is restored only if new ERR_SCRIPT_EXECUTION_INTERRUPTED() returns normally. If the constructor throws (for example, a stack overflow or an out-of-memory error inside the SIGINT listener), the override stays at 0. Every later error in this global then has no stack frames. assertion_error.ts uses try/finally for the same pattern. Use it here too. The ast-grep setstate-same-var hint is a false positive: restoring the previous value is the intended behavior.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable can be handed a null owner from setProcessDebugPort / setProcessTitle — getProcessObject falls back to defaultGlobalObject(...)->processObject(), a LazyProperty that initializes on access, so the owner is never null there; and the new spyOn immutability check runs before any call that can enter JS, so no exception check is missed.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds JSC immutableGlobals support across ZigGlobalObject, NodeVM, six custom setters in BunObject/BunProcess, Error.captureStackTrace, spyOn, and rewrites stack-trace-limit handling in several src/js built-ins, plus a WebKit pin bump to a preview tag; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Seven inline findings (preview-tag pin, isInsideNodeModules regression, prepareStackTrace setter bypass, vm globalThis immutability timing, --stack-trace-limit startup throw, --trace-env-js-stack limit-0 regression, console getter caching) already signal that a human must review, so this body only records the two concerns that were examined and ruled out.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp — Users running with * can still swap the immutable Error's stack formatter, so every later err.stack is rendered by their function despite the option. Object.create(Error).prepareStackTrace = fn reaches errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceSetter (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1248), which ignores thisValue and stores into m_errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceValue with no immutability check. Fix: every custom setter whose state lives outside its owner calls throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable on the owner first, covering the 3 sites this PR leaves out. Same pattern at 3 sites (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1248, ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292, ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1305). [also at: src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1316 - With BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals listing globalThis, code can still change what globalThis.onmessage and globalThis.onerror read as, which the option is meant to forbid.]

    Why this was flagged

Start bun with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals='*' so Error is immutable, then run Object.create(Error).prepareStackTrace = (e, sites) => 'owned'. JSC's put walks the prototype chain, finds the CustomValue property installed at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:3091 and invokes errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceSetter at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1248. That setter never looks at thisValue or at hasImmutableProperties() and writes m_errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceValue at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1258. From then on computeErrorInfoToJSValueWithoutSkipping (FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:611) formats every error's .stack through the user function. The direct assignment Error.prepareStackTrace = fn is refused by JSC and the PR added throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable to six other setters for exactly this bypass, but this setter and setGlobalOnMessage/setGlobalOnError (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292, 1305) were not given the guard. On the base branch nothing is immutable, so there is no promise to break; after merge the option is advertised as freezing Error yet this route changes its behaviour silently.

Verification: In src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp, line 3091 installs the property as a custom setter on the Error constructor. Lines 1248-1262 errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceSetter ignores thisValue, performs no hasImmutableProperties() check, and unconditionally stores into m_errorConstructorPrepareStackTraceValue (line 1258). FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:611-617 reads it for every error's .stack computation.

  • 🟡 src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts — Users who run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=* and pass --stack-trace-limit=N get a startup TypeError instead of a working process. pre_execution.ts:299 assigns Error.stackTraceLimit after applyImmutableGlobalsOption has frozen Error, so the write throws before any user code runs. Fix: apply the CLI limit without writing the frozen property, for example via the new setStackTraceLimitOverride helper or by setting the limit natively before applyImmutableGlobalsOption(vm) runs in GlobalObject::finishCreation, so Bun's own flag keeps working whichever globals are listed. The PR lists this under "Not covered"; it is Bun's own flag failing, not the option doing its job.

    Why this was flagged

ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2807 calls applyImmutableGlobalsOption(vm) at the end of GlobalObject::finishCreation, so by the time pre_execution.ts runs, Error has immutable properties when * or Error is listed. pre_execution.ts:297-300 then executes Error.stackTraceLimit = limit whenever --stack-trace-limit was passed; the assignment is refused with a TypeError and startup aborts. On the base branch there is no immutable option so the flag always works. The PR description names this case under "Not covered" as an accepted cost, but it is a Bun CLI flag that cannot be combined with the new env var at all, and the PR already adds jsFunctionSetStackTraceLimitOverride (FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:933) which could carry the value without touching the frozen property.

Verification: Triggering condition: BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals lists * or Error and the process is started with --stack-trace-limit=N. src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts:297-300 is unchanged by the PR and still does if (Number.isFinite(limit)) Error.stackTraceLimit = limit;. One detail is wrong: startup does not abort. The base branch has no such option and the flag always works there.

  • 🟡 src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp — nit: With BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals including *, the console._stdout and console._stderr getters never cache their value, so every read re-runs the process.stdout / process.stderr lookup. sweep:console->putDirect\(vm, property, (stdoutValue|stderrValue) The sibling getter getConsoleConstructor at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2829 was updated to materialize under AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties, but ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2848 and ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2863 still call putDirect on the immutable console, which is refused silently. Fix: wrap those two putDirect calls in the same AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties scope so the materialized property sticks when console has immutable properties.

    Why this was flagged

The trigger is reading console._stdout or console._stderr (node:console and user code touching Console internals) in a process started with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals containing *, which makes console immutable at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2807. getConsoleStdout at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2848 and getConsoleStderr at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2863 call console->putDirect to replace the custom getter with the value, with no AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties scope; per the PR's own account of the Console getter, a putDirect on an immutable object is refused without a word. The getter still returns the right stream, so the only effect is that the cache never sticks and each read repeats processObject()->get(...) at line 2845/2860, which is why this is a nit. On the base branch the putDirect succeeds and later reads are plain property reads. The diff fixed exactly this for the Console getter at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2828-2831 but not for its two siblings.

Verification: Trigger: BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals containing *, then any read of console._stdout / console._stderr. The getters at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2848 and 2863 replace the accessor with a bare putDirect, with no JSC::AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties scope, so the write is refused and the CustomValue getter runs on every read. No test covers _stdout/_stderr.

🔴 Every build (CI and local prebuilt) will fail with a 404 the moment oven-sh/WebKit#797 merges or closes, because WEBKIT_VERSION pins the preview tag "autobuild-preview-pr-797-e71041dd". GitHub deletes autobuild-preview-pr-* releases when the WebKit PR closes, as scripts/build/download.ts:320 documents. Fix: before merging, replace the pin with the merged main commit sha of oven-sh/WebKit (the autobuild-<sha> release), as the PR description itself says is pending.

Why this was flagged

prebuiltUrl at scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:73 builds the tarball URL from cfg.webkitVersion, which defaults to WEBKIT_VERSION at scripts/build/config.ts:59. scripts/build/download.ts:320-336 states that autobuild-preview-pr-* releases only exist while the WebKit PR is open and that every build 404s at once when it merges or closes. If this PR lands with the preview pin, the main branch's build dependency disappears as soon as WebKit#797 is merged, so CI and any fresh checkout cannot download JSC and fail with "WebKit preview release is gone". The base branch pins a 40-hex sha (0c06faadf65bf8e8c8ad3a5a8aca83e1e9ed653f) whose release persists. The PR description acknowledges the pin is to be replaced by the merge commit, but the code as submitted still carries the transient tag.

Verification: normal — acknowledged in diff: the author knows the pin is temporary but the change as submitted still ships it; the trigger is oven-sh/WebKit#797 merging or closing, after which the preview release is deleted. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 now reads export const WEBKIT_VERSION = "autobuild-preview-pr-797-e71041dd";. scripts/build/download.ts:318-336 states the hazard: "so every build 404s at once".

🔴 Users who list globalThis and run scripts in a node:vm context may get a TypeError from a plain top-level var x = 1 or globalThis.x = 1, where the base branch runs them. NodeVMGlobalObject::finishCreation calls applyImmutableGlobalsOption (NodeVM.cpp:1128) while specialSandbox and m_sandbox are still null, so the new guard at NodeVM.cpp:1244 falls through and globalThis resolves to the vm global's own proxy, which is then frozen like the main global. Fix: do not freeze the vm global itself when globalThis is listed (skip that name in vm contexts), and add a vm test under globalThis that runs var x = 1 and globalThis.fresh = 1 in contextified and DONT_CONTEXTIFY contexts.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals contains globalThis and the program calls vm.runInNewContext / vm.runInContext (any sandbox, including vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY) with a script that declares a top-level var or function, or assigns a new global. At creation, NodeVMGlobalObject::finishCreation (NodeVM.cpp:1128) runs applyImmutableGlobalsOption before setContextifiedObject (NodeVM.cpp:1617) and setSpecialSandbox (NodeVM.cpp:1625), so the globalThis lookup at NodeVM.cpp:1244 falls through to Base::getOwnPropertySlot and returns the vm global's own JSGlobalProxy. The option therefore freezes the vm global exactly as it freezes the main global, where the PR's own test shows var declared -> TypeError (immutable-globals.test.ts:176). Declarations in a vm context still end in Base::defineOwnProperty on the frozen cell (NodeVM.cpp:1428), so the vm 'write hooks' the PR relies on do not shield this. Base branch: no option, vm declarations always work.

Verification: src/jsc/bindings/NodeVM.cpp:1128 applyImmutableGlobalsOption(vm); runs at the end of NodeVMGlobalObject::finishCreation, i.e. before vmModule_createContext calls setContextifiedObject(sandbox) (NodeVM.cpp:1617) and setSpecialSandbox (NodeVM.cpp:1625). Nothing in NodeVMGlobalObject bypasses that: put ends in Base::put (NodeVM.cpp:1204) and defineOwnProperty ends in Base::defineOwnProperty (NodeVM.cpp:1428).

🟡 (optional) Operators running with --trace-env-js-stack and Error.stackTraceLimit set to 0 (via --stack-trace-limit=0 or at runtime) now get 10 JS frames printed per env access instead of none. printEnvTrace now calls ErrorCaptureStackTrace at pre_execution.ts:128, and errorConstructorFuncCaptureStackTrace maps a limit of 0 to DEFAULT_ERROR_STACK_TRACE_LIMIT at FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:861-863. The base used new Error() with limit+3, which honored 0 and printed nothing. Fix: honor a limit of 0 in the trace path (read Error.stackTraceLimit and skip the capture when it is 0, or make captureStackTrace stop mapping 0 to the default), and add a test with --stack-trace-limit=0.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun --trace-env-js-stack --stack-trace-limit=0 app.ts, or any app that sets Error.stackTraceLimit = 0 for production (a common performance setting) and is run with --trace-env-js-stack. Every process.env access runs printEnvTrace (pre_execution.ts:115). The new code at pre_execution.ts:128 calls ErrorCaptureStackTrace(target, trap); in errorConstructorFuncCaptureStackTrace the limit is read at FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:860 and a 0 is replaced with DEFAULT_ERROR_STACK_TRACE_LIMIT at FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:861-863, so 10 frames are captured and the loop from i=1 prints all of them. On the base branch the limit was 0 + 3 for new Error() and the loop started at index 3, so with a limit of 0 no user frames were printed. The PR documents a change from limit+1 to limit frames for deep stacks, not this 0 -> 10 inversion. Rate: once per env access on every process using the flag. Remedy: when Error.stackTraceLimit is 0, skip the capture (or pass the limit explicitly via captureCallSites rather than through captureStackTrace's 0-to-default mapping).

Verification: Triggered when --trace-env-js-stack is on and Error.stackTraceLimit is 0. src/js/internal/process/pre_execution.ts:128 now builds the stack with ErrorCaptureStackTrace(target, trap), and src/jsc/bindings/FormatStackTraceForJS.cpp:860-863 maps a limit of 0 to DEFAULT_ERROR_STACK_TRACE_LIMIT, so 10 frames print per env access. The base printed one user frame at limit 0. No test covers the limit-0 case.

Run the subprocess tests concurrently.

Each case in this file spawns one or more Bun subprocesses. The test.each blocks and the single test calls run one after another. Each subprocess uses its own tempDir and environment, so the cases do not share state. Use test.concurrent.each / test.concurrent, or wrap the block in describe.concurrent.

🔴 Users who list globalThis can still swap the global's onmessage/onerror handler, and Module.prototype.require = fn is dropped with no error. Three native setters keep their value outside the object and lack the owner check given to Bun.main and process. setGlobalOnMessage and setGlobalOnError (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292, 1305) reach the immutable global through globalObjectForEventHandler when the receiver is a Proxy or another object. setterRequireFunction (NodeModuleModule.cpp:605) putDirects on the immutable global, which is refused silently. Fix: call throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable on the object the value lands in at every such setter, which covers the 3 sites listed. Same pattern at 3 sites (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292, ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1305, NodeModuleModule.cpp:605). [also at: src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1299 - Workers running with globalThis listed can still have their global onmessage and onerror handlers replaced through an inheritor or Proxy, although a direct assignment throws. setGlobalOnMessage (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1299) and setGlobalOnError (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1312) keep the handler in the…; src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:3163 - nit: With process immutable, a write routed to the ppid setter reports success but stores nothing. setProcessPpid at BunProcess.cpp:3162 calls putDirect on thisObject, which JSC silently refuses on an immutable object, then returns true.]

Why this was flagged

Run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=globalThis (the global object is immutable after src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2814) and evaluate new Proxy(globalThis, {}).onmessage = fn. onmessage/onerror are CustomValue properties, so setGlobalOnMessage (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292) runs, globalObjectForEventHandler (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1269-1274) falls back to defaultGlobalObject, and setEventHandlerAttribute (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1299) installs fn on the immutable global. The PR fixed exactly this route for Bun.main and process.argv/execArgv/title/debugPort/exitCode with throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable (ErrorCode.cpp:295-301), but not here, so a direct globalThis.onmessage = fn throws while the Proxy route succeeds. Same gap in the other direction at setterRequireFunction (NodeModuleModule.cpp:605-617): Module.prototype.require = fn reaches the setter, which does globalObject->putDirect(overridableRequirePrivateName, fn) on the immutable global; per the PR a putDirect on an immutable object is refused without a word, and the setter returns true, so require hooks install nothing and get no error. On the base branch none of these objects are immutable and all three setters take effect.

Verification: setGlobalOnMessage (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1292-1303) and setGlobalOnError (1305-1316) have no immutability check; globalObjectForEventHandler (1269-1274) resolves any non-global receiver back to the real global and setEventHandlerAttribute mutates that immutable global's handler. setterRequireFunction (src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp:605-617) does putDirect on the immutable global, which is refused silently, and returns true.

🟡 (optional) Users who list Bun can still rewrite the Bun.FFI namespace, and bun:ffi then picks up the replaced functions when it loads. The getter list at src/jsc/bindings/BunObject+exports.h:93 omits FFI, whose Rust getter returns a plain object of functions plus a nested read object, so namespaceObjectOf never runs for it. Fix: cover every lazily built plain-object namespace on Bun, including FFI and its nested read object, while keeping bun:ffi loadable: src/js/bun/ffi.ts:78-80 deletes callback, closeCallback and cfunction from that object at load, which an immutable Bun.FFI would refuse.

Why this was flagged

Run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=Bun and evaluate Bun.FFI.dlopen = () => fake before require("bun:ffi"). BunObject_lazyPropCb_wrap_FFI (src/jsc/bindings/BunObject+exports.h:101-106) returns the Rust value unchanged because isNamespaceObjectGetter("FFI") at src/jsc/bindings/BunObject+exports.h:93 is false; the value is a plain object (src/runtime/ffi/FFIObject.rs:114-137), which JSC's immutable-globals pass does not reach because only functions held by Bun are covered. The assignment succeeds, and src/js/bun/ffi.ts:67-77 captures globalThis.Bun.FFI.dlopen at module load, so dlopen from bun:ffi calls the user's replacement. On the base branch nothing is immutable, so this is only a gap relative to this PR's own Bun.password / Bun.dns / Bun.semver / Bun.unsafe handling. Simply adding FFI to the list is not enough: src/js/bun/ffi.ts:78-80 runs delete ffi.callback, delete ffi.closeCallback, delete ffi.cfunction, which an immutable object refuses, so the PR test at test/js/bun/jsc/immutable-globals.test.ts:456 would start failing on bun:ffi.

Verification: src/jsc/bindings/BunObject+exports.h:92-98 defines isNamespaceObjectGetter with a closed list; FFI is not in it, so the wrapper at lines 101-106 returns the Rust value unchanged and Bun::namespaceObjectOf never runs for it. src/js/bun/ffi.ts:67-77 captures ffi.dlopen at module load, so a replacement made before the first import of bun:ffi is what dlopen() then calls.

🟡 nit (optional): The FinalizationRegistry test is loosened and the stated reason is a conservative-scan leftover, which REVIEW.md says is never the cause. vm.test.ts:2689-2690 now accepts any subset of the four contexts dying and the comment blames "a pointer left in the padding of a native frame". Fix: find what actually keeps a dropped context alive after fullGC() (this PR's WebKit bump to the pr-797 preview is the change that made it flaky) and keep the original assertion that all four dead contexts never run their cleanup, or state the real cause in the comment.

Why this was flagged

The change is unrelated to immutable globals and only appears alongside the WEBKIT_VERSION bump at scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6. vm.test.ts:2669-2670 now records a WeakRef per dropped context and vm.test.ts:2689-2690 computes died after fullGC(), asserting only someContextDied: true (vm.test.ts:2693, 2698) and counting cleanups only for contexts that died. On the base branch the test asserted deadContextCleanups: 0 across all four contexts. The new comment attributes a surviving context to native-frame padding, i.e. the conservative stack scanner; the repository review instructions state that is never the cause and the bug is in Bun's code, so this de-flake hides a regression (a context pinned past fullGC, or a dropped context's job running) instead of locating it. A context that survives by that reasoning would also get its cleanup job run, which is the behaviour the test exists to reject.

Verification: nit. Triggering condition: whenever this test runs after merge, a dropped node:vm context that survives fullGC() (for any reason, including a real retention bug) no longer fails the test as long as at least one of the four dies. Head test/js/node/vm/vm.test.ts:2689-2690 adds const died = droppedContexts.map(context => context.deref() === undefined);; :2698 expects someContextDied: true, deadContextCleanups: 0.

The last 3 reviews of this pull request each found new blocking issues, repeatedly in src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp. Where they share a root cause, one fix may close them together.

Still open from earlier reviews (6):

  • 🔴 src/jsc/bindings/NodeVM.cpp:1250 — Users who list globalThis and run scripts in a node:vm context may get a TypeError from a plain top-level var x = 1 or…
  • Also unresolved: 3 minor or pre-existing, 1 blocking on lines changed since (possibly already fixed).

If you have decided not to act on one of these findings, resolve its thread (a reply alone leaves it open) and the next review stops counting it. To review this commit again now, use Re-run on its "Claude Code Review" check.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp — Users who list process (or Bun) get silent state corruption where the base works: a SHARE_ENV worker's env stops syncing with the parent, and process._exiting never becomes true at exit. Native code still stores runtime state as plain properties of these objects with putDirect, which an immutable owner refuses without a word. Fix: keep state the option covers out of the owner's properties (resolve process.env/Bun.env through the LazyProperty, expose _exiting from m_isExiting) or write it under AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties, which covers the 3 sites listed. Same pattern at 3 sites (BunProcess.cpp:351, JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:965, JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:973). [also at: src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2815 - Users who list process or Bun and spawn a worker with env: SHARE_ENV get a main thread whose process.env (or Bun.env) silently stops matching the worker's.]

    Why this was flagged

Run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=process, read process.env once (reifies the env PropertyCallback entry at BunProcess.cpp:5062 as an own property), then create a worker_threads Worker with env: SHARE_ENV. ensureSharedEnvStoreForWorker builds the shared store and at JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:965 does processObject->putDirect(vm, envIdentifier, shared, 0); with the same for Bun.env at :973 when Bun is listed. The PR describes putDirect on an object with immutable properties as refused without a word, so the parent's process.env keeps pointing at the orphaned pre-swap JSEnvironmentVariableMap while the worker uses the shared store: parent writes are invisible to the worker and vice versa. On the base branch nothing is immutable and both threads share one store. Likewise dispatchExitInternal at BunProcess.cpp:351 does putDirectNamed(vm, process, "_exiting"_s, jsBoolean(true)) on exit; refused, so process.nextTick at src/js/builtins/ProcessObjectInternals.ts:393 no longer drops callbacks during exit. The PR guarded six setters with throwIfSetterOwnerIsImmutable, but these direct native writes were not covered.

Verification: putDirect on an object with immutable properties is silently refused; the diff wraps console->putDirect in JSC::AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties for that reason. src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:351 putDirectNamed(vm, process, "_exiting"_s, jsBoolean(true)) and src/jsc/bindings/JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp:965 processObject->putDirect(vm, envIdentifier, shared, 0) get no such scope and no guard.

🔴 Operators who list globalThis lose require, module, exports, __filename and __dirname in bun -e/-p CommonJS code and in bun repl, with no error from Bun. applyImmutableGlobalsOption at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2815 freezes the global in finishCreation, and the eval-entry setup later installs those names with putDirect on the global, which is refused silently; the user's code then fails with ReferenceError: require is not defined. Fix: install the eval-scope globals in a way the option allows, e.g. under AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties as done for crypto.subtle and console.Console, or report the refused setup loudly, covering both JSCommonJSModule.cpp:231-235 and ExposeNodeModuleGlobals.cpp:147-150.

Why this was flagged

Run BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=globalThis bun -e 'const fs = require("fs"); console.log(typeof fs)'. The EvalGlobalObject (ZigGlobalObject.cpp:577) inherits GlobalObject::finishCreation, which ends with applyImmutableGlobalsOption(vm) at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2815, so the global object has immutable properties before any module runs. When the eval source is evaluated as CommonJS, JSCommonJSModule.cpp:223-235 runs globalObject->putDirect for exports and require and Bun::putDirectNamed for module, __filename, __dirname; per the PR's own description putDirect on an immutable object is refused without a word, and no exception check follows, so JSC::evaluate at JSCommonJSModule.cpp:242 runs the user's code without those bindings and require throws ReferenceError. bun repl does the same at ExposeNodeModuleGlobals.cpp:147-150. On the base branch the global is never immutable and both paths work. The PR's tests for globalThis use an .mjs file or -e scripts that never call require, so this path is untested.

Verification: The eval-entry CJS path is untouched by the diff and still installs its scope on the global with plain putDirect (src/jsc/bindings/JSCommonJSModule.cpp:223-235). Nothing wraps these putDirect calls in JSC::AllowLazyMaterializationOfImmutableProperties. Result: BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=globalThis bun -e 'const fs = require("fs")' hits ReferenceError: require is not defined. The base branch has no such option.

🔴 Users who list globalThis (or MessagePort, Performance, Blob) get a TypeError from require("node:worker_threads"), require("node:perf_hooks") and require("node:quic"), and every node:worker_threads Worker dies at bootstrap. BunClientData.cpp:307-310 freezes the prototype of any class whose name is a global when that global is covered, and these modules mutate such prototypes while loading. Fix: built-in modules must load with any global listed, so define these members natively before the freeze or guard the writes like events.ts:1043 does, and run the "every built-in module loads" test with globalThis. Same pattern at 3 sites (src/js/node/worker_threads.ts:294, src/js/node/perf_hooks.ts:279, src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts:171).

Why this was flagged

Run with BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals=globalThis and call require("node:worker_threads"). The module reads the intrinsic MessagePort constructor (src/js/node/worker_threads.ts:84), which creates MessagePort.prototype. didCreatePrototype finds "MessagePort" in the global's static table, so src/jsc/bindings/BunClientData.cpp:310 marks it immutable because the global has immutable properties. injectFakeEmitter then runs Object.setPrototypeOf(proto, inherited) at src/js/node/worker_threads.ts:294, which throws TypeError on a non-extensible object, so the require throws. node:perf_hooks does Object.defineProperties(Performance.prototype, ...) at src/js/node/perf_hooks.ts:279 and node:quic does Object.defineProperty(Blob.prototype, kBlobHandle, ...) at src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts:171, failing the same way. On the base branch nothing is immutable and all three modules load. The test at test/js/bun/jsc/immutable-globals.test.ts:456-457 loads every module only with "*,Bun,process", so none of these globals is covered there.

Verification: normal — triggered when BUN_JSC_immutableGlobals lists globalThis (or MessagePort, Performance, Blob) and a built-in module that mutates one of those prototypes while loading is required. src/jsc/bindings/BunClientData.cpp:307-310 freezes the prototype; src/js/node/worker_threads.ts:305, src/js/node/perf_hooks.ts:279 and src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts:171 then throw at load.
