bundler(splitting): give a shared chunk to an entry point whose order breaks no load-time read - #44876
Conversation
… breaks no load-time read A chunk prints its files in the order of one entry point, its owner: the one that loads first. On an import cycle, that order can put a statement that runs at load ahead of a binding that it reads, where the order of another entry point of the chunk does not. Every entry point that loads the chunk then throws, or reads `undefined`. When the owner's order breaks such a read, the chunk now goes to the next entry point by rank whose order breaks none. With no such entry point, the owner stays. Only a chunk that two entry points share and that holds a file of an import cycle is looked at.

When an owner’s order is unsafe, it can use a safe walk from another entry point to lay out the chunk. New tests cover cyclic module graphs and entry-point configurations. src/bundler/linker_context/findAllImportedPartsInJSOrder.rs— A shared cyclic chunk can be handed to an entry point whose real output order still throws at load, because the order that was checked is not the order that gets printed. The trial at findAllImportedPartsInJSOrder.rs:378 owns only the one chunk, so every other chunk the candidate owns gets slot None at :863 andruns = loads(file, loader)at :868 instead of true, and the folding loop at :776 walks only that chunk's folded files, in a different slot order than the final walk. Fix: run the trial with the candidate's full ownership (or re-run is_broken_by on the final walks after :40 and revert any owner whose final order is broken). Why this was flagged
Trigger: a
--splittingbuild with a cyclic shared chunk flagged at :884 and found broken at :357, where the candidate entry point also owns other chunks. In the trial (:368-:378) trial_plan.owner_of_chunk marks only the one chunk, so for the candidate's other chunks slot_of (:815) returns None:runsat :868 falls back to loads(file, loader), which is false once a LoadNow edge (:935) changedloaderto an entry point that does not load that file, so require() and CSS dependency edges at :601/:617 are skipped and later files are entered in a different order. Independently, the folding loop at :776-:791 in the trial starts from the checked chunk (slot 0), while in the final walk the candidate's lower-index chunks walk their folded files first. is_broken_by at :380 therefore judges an order that the second run_walks at :40 never produces; the final order can be broken although the trial passed (or a safe candidate rejected). On the base branch the owner never changes, so the old owner's side-effect order is at least stable.Verification: pre-existing — the bundle throws at load in this corner exactly as the base does. The trial plan at :360-366 starts with
owner_of_chunk: vec![u32::MAX; chunks.len()]and :376 marks only K, soslot_of(:815-825) returnsNonefor every other chunk C owns andruns(:868) falls back toloads.is_broken_by(:379) judges a part order that is not the one the rerun at :41-42 prints.
… order that was checked `export const getV5 = () => v5` counted as a read of `v5` at load. So an owner whose order loads could lose its chunk to an entry point whose order does not: a file that needs what another file sets on a shared object then ran first. A binding that gets a value that evaluates nothing (`Expr::can_be_moved`) is now a function to search through, like a function declaration. The walk that passes the check now lays the chunk out itself. Before, the owner changed and every walk ran again, so the order that printed was not the one that was checked, and the other chunks were laid out a second time. They now keep the layout of their owner. One round tries the next entry point of every chunk at once, on the thread pool, so chunks with the same entry points share a walk.

I reviewed the second push and found no bugs; the rework to find_safe_walks and the new LoadEffect::Assigns class address the stored-closure, whole-layout-rerun and serial-trial points from my earlier pass. Because this is ~400 lines of new graph analysis and parallel trial walks in the splitting linker, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
find_safe_walksrounds: a trial walk only overwritesruns_of_chunkfor chunks that passedis_broken_by,enteredis pruned to those chunks, andchunk_of_fileis neveru32::MAXfor an entered file so theis_safeindex is in bounds;owner_of_chunkis not read after the destructive fill.LoadEffect::ofagainstExpr::can_be_moved: identifiers, non-macro object/array literals, extendsclasses and non-literal static fields all stayEvaluates, soconst y = xand{ f: () => x }still count as reads, matching the README bullet.has_cycle:seenis set on pop, not push, so a diamond (A→B, A→C, B→C) does not trip it, only a true back-edge;run.end.min(parts_len)guards theu32::MAXsentinel infor_each_part_backward.SharedChunkOwnerKeepsChunkWithStoredFunctionfails on the first push (chunk would move to b.js andcfg.namereads undefined) and passes here, so theAssignsclause is load-bearing.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewrites the code-splitting chunk-ordering pass in src/bundler/linker_context/findAllImportedPartsInJSOrder.rs (about 385 added lines), adding a per-part load-effect graph, a cycle flag on the walk, and parallel trial walks that hand a cyclic shared chunk to another entry point when the owner's order breaks a load-time read; it also adds eight bundler tests and a README bullet. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The second commit substantively changed the mechanism in response to the prior review, and no CODEOWNER covers the changed paths. Deferral rather than approval is driven by the size and subtlety of the new analysis (unsafe parent-ref casts reused inside the trial loop, a heuristic read check with documented limits), which a bundler maintainer should weigh.
