…t file A `--parallel` worker turns its event loop while it has no active file: between two files, after its last file, and while it exits. With `--no-isolate`, a timer or promise that a finished file left behind fires there. The error was printed and not counted, so a run could print an uncaught error and exit 0. - `TestRunner::report_unowned` prints and counts an error that no test owns. The between-tests branch of `BunTest::on_uncaught_exception` and the no-file arm of the hook (in a worker) call it. - A worker sends one `UnownedError` frame for each such error. The frame replaces the `unhandled` field of `FileDone`. - A worker drains its channel again after its `exit` listeners ran. - An error that fires during the `--isolate` swap stays as it was: printed, not counted. Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the bun_test.rs early return for lost side effects: the on_print_error_zig_exception hook is only armed when failure_ctx is non-null, which requires ShowHandledError, so the between-tests path never used it and the refactor drops nothing there. The FileDone 9->8 layout change has exactly one encoder (runner.rs) and one decoder (Coordinator.rs), and Jest::RUNNER aliases reporter.jest, so the serial-run counter increments the same field it did before.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds an UnownedError wire frame between parallel test workers and the coordinator, removes the per-file unhandled count from FileDone, and centralizes banner printing and counting in TestRunner::report_unowned; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Inline findings were posted, so a human still needs to look; the ruled-out items above are the refactor-preservation and encode/decode checks the repository instructions ask for.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🔴 A worker whose exit listener throws can now run queued native tasks after Node-API envs were torn down, which global_exit deliberately avoids. runner.rs:691 calls drain_pending_writes after on_exit(), and that function ticks the event loop (runner.rs:703, :707). By then VirtualMachine.rs:2273 has run run_cleanup_hooks and :2270 handle.stop(). On Windows the branch is taken on every such exit because uv_try_write always returns EAGAIN (Channel.rs:351), so the frame is always still queued. Fix: flush the channel without turning the JS event loop (a blocking write on fd 3, or move the exit-listener frame send before on_exit's teardown), or drain only I/O, so no task or callback runs after cleanup hooks.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: a --parallel worker running a file whose process.on("exit") listener throws; on Windows the UnownedError frame is always queued (Channel.rs:340-375, uv_try_write returns EAGAIN), on POSIX it is queued on a short write (Channel.rs:332). run_as_worker at runner.rs:689 calls on_exit(); VirtualMachine.rs:2266-2275 sets is_shutting_down, calls handle.stop() and run_cleanup_hooks() which tears down every Node-API env. runner.rs:691 then calls drain_pending_writes, which at runner.rs:703 runs tick() and at :707 auto_tick(). On the base branch the only drain ran before on_exit (base runner.rs:675-683) and nothing ticked afterwards; VirtualMachine.rs:2323-2325 keeps a FIXME saying a tick after on_exit breaks 50+ tests. The guard uncaught_exception at VirtualMachine.rs:2090 only swallows JS errors; it does not stop the task queue from running.
Verification: runner.rs:689-692 now calls (*vm).on_exit(); drain_pending_writes(&*vm, &wloop.cmds.channel); (*vm).global_exit(), and drain_pending_writes (runner.rs:701-709) calls tick() / auto_tick() while channel.has_pending_writes(). On Windows has_pending_writes() reports inflight (Channel.rs:350-374, 431-435), so a frame sent from an exit listener is always still queued. Before this PR, nothing ticked the loop after on_exit().

🟡 nit (optional): the new run helper opens the child's stdout as a pipe but never reads it, so a worker or coordinator that writes to stdout (a console.log in a future fixture, a debug build log) can fill the pipe and hang the test instead of failing it. test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:137 pipes stdout; test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:140 awaits only stderr and exited. Fix: drain every piped stream concurrently, e.g. Promise.all([proc.stdout.text(), proc.stderr.text(), proc.exited]) as the existing test at line 34 of this file does, or set stdout: "ignore". [also at: test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:141 - nit: the new run helper opens the child's stdout as a pipe but never reads it, so the five new cases can deadlock if the child ever writes more than the OS pipe buffer to stdout.]
Why this was flagged
Bun.spawn at test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:131-139 sets stdout: "pipe". Line 140 awaits only proc.stderr.text() and proc.exited; the stdout pipe is never read. Today the five fixtures write nothing to stdout so the pipe stays empty and the test passes. If a fixture or a debug log later writes more than the OS pipe buffer (~64KB) to stdout, the child blocks on write and the test hangs until the 5s or 60s timeout rather than reporting the real assertion. The existing test in the same file at line 34 drains stdout, stderr and exited together, which the REVIEW.md rule 'Subprocess tests: drain pipes concurrently' asks for.
Verification: nit. Trigger: only if the coordinator process ever writes more than the OS pipe buffer to its own stdout; today it writes nothing there. test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:137 sets stdout: "pipe" and line 140 never reads proc.stdout, while the pre-existing helper in the same file (line 34) drains all three. Nothing breaks on the merged code, hence nit.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 nit (optional): the five new cases each spawn a bun test --parallel=2 child yet run serially, so the file's wall time on debug+ASAN lanes grows by the sum of five worker startups instead of the max. test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:97 opens a plain describe and uses test.each / test, while each case only touches its own tempDir. Fix: run the independent subprocess cases concurrently, e.g. describe.concurrent or test.concurrent / test.concurrent.each, as the harness conventions ask for subprocess-spawning tests.
Why this was flagged
The new describe("--parallel: an error that no test owns", ...) at test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:97 contains three test.each cases at :160, one test at :168 and one at :174; each calls run() at :132, which spawns a fresh bun test --parallel=2 --parallel-delay=1000000 child with its own tempDir. Nothing is shared between the cases, so they are independent. The repository's test conventions (CLAUDE.md line 103 and test/CLAUDE.md line 22) ask for test.concurrent / describe.concurrent for independent subprocess-spawning tests to keep files inside the ~10s budget on debug+ASAN lanes where each worker startup takes seconds (the file already needs a 60_000 ms per-test timeout at :170 for one case). On the base branch this describe block does not exist; after merging, the file runs these five children one after another. This is a convention nit, not a correctness defect.
Verification: nit. Triggering condition: every run of this file, most visibly on debug/ASAN lanes. Mechanism verified in test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts: line 97 opens a plain describe; none of the cases is concurrent, though each has its own tempDir and shares nothing. Consequence: the five new subprocess cases run serially, so file wall time is the sum of five startups rather than the max.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a user whose --parallel --no-isolate run now exits 1 for an error between files sees that error printed under the wrong file's header, so they debug the wrong file. The worker prints the banner and error to its stderr while no file is in flight; the coordinator buffers it in w.captured and only prints it at the next TestDone via flush_captured (Coordinator.rs:412), which calls ensure_header(idx) for the file dispatched afterwards. Fix: print an unowned error with no file header, e.g. carry the formatted banner+error text in the UnownedError payload and write it on receipt at Coordinator.rs:541, or flush captured without a header when it arrived with no file in flight. The base misattributed the bare error the same way, but it did not fail the run then.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: bun test --parallel=2 --no-isolate where a.test.js leaves setTimeout(() => { throw new Error("LATE") }, 0) behind and b.test.js is the next file on the same worker. After the worker sends FileDone for a.test.js, Coordinator.rs:475 flushes captured and Coordinator.rs:514 dispatches b.test.js so w.inflight = Some(b). The timer fires in the worker's wait loop (runner.rs:564-570) and report_unowned (jest.rs:173-179) prints # Unhandled error between tests and error: LATE to the worker's stderr, which WorkerPipe::on_read_chunk (Worker.rs:417) appends to w.captured. The next TestDone for b.test.js (Coordinator.rs:441) calls flush_captured, which at Coordinator.rs:412-413 calls ensure_header(b) before writing the buffer, so the banner and error appear under b.test.js:. On the base branch the bare error: LATE landed under the same wrong header, but the run exited 0; after this change the run exits 1 with 1 error and the only location shown is the wrong file.
Verification: Every chunk of the worker's stderr is appended to w.captured (Worker.rs:417). captured is next flushed at b's first TestDone (Coordinator.rs:441 -> flush_captured, 412-413), which calls ensure_header(idx) with b's index, printing \nb.test.js:\n immediately before the error: LATE text. The new test only counts ^error: LATE$ and banner lines; it does not pin which header precedes them.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: Under the default bun test --parallel (isolate on), a user's own microtask or close handler that throws after a file ends is still printed but the run exits 0, while --no-isolate exits 1 for the same code. The gate worker_counts_unowned_errors() at jest.rs:680 is false for the whole swap, and that window starts with drain_microtasks() at jsc_hooks.rs:1730 which runs user microtasks, not only Bun's socket teardown. Fix: narrow in_isolation_swap to the socket-close steps (close_test_file_sockets at VirtualMachine.rs:5848, :5869) or suppress only Bun-originated socket hang up, so user errors at the swap are counted like the rest.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: a test file that leaves a pending microtask that throws, or a socket.close handler that throws as in the PR's own fixture, run with the default --parallel which implies --isolate. runner.rs:598 sets in_isolation_swap before stop_active_handles_for_test_isolation, whose first statement is drain_microtasks() (jsc_hooks.rs:1730); the throw reaches on_unhandled_rejection with no active file, jest.rs:680 returns false and jest.rs:683 only prints. The same file under --no-isolate is drained at runner.rs:565 with the flag clear and is counted, exit 1. The PR's justification is Bun's own socket hang up from node:http clients, but the gate covers every user callback that runs during the swap; the PR's test 'is not counted in the isolation swap' pins exit 0 for a user close handler that throws. Remedy: scope the gate to the socket sweep or filter by error origin rather than time window.
Verification: pre-existing; acknowledged in diff: src/runtime/cli/test/parallel/runner.rs:487-489 ("an error that fires then is not counted") and the pinned test at test/cli/test/parallel-startup-failure.test.ts:169-178 (closeHandler fixture under --isolate: printed 1, banners 0, exitCode 0); the base branch already prints-and-exits-0 for errors raised inside the swap, so merging makes this path no worse.
