bun check: fix more differences from tsc - #44685
Conversation
A named union where one member extends another kept only the base member after `c ? a : b`, `[a, b]`, `a ?? b` and `a || b`, so narrowing by `in` and assignments of the derived member were false errors. The union is now the result, as in tsc. Also fixes false TS2310 for a class that passes a conditional type of itself to its base class, false TS7022 for rest elements, destructured variables and defaults of patterns in loops and parameters, comparisons that were taken for type arguments, and files named `x.TSX`. Errors that were missed: an imported type that is only used as a value is unused, a recursive comparison stopped one level early if a class above it extends the target, reserved words as names in JSX, and others. 123 new programs in differential-cases.json, each run through tsc and bun check in CI. Use a set or a sorted lookup for statements_with_await_in_names.
Vec::contains runs once for each top-level statement. The cost is O(statements × recorded). The list is usually small, so the practical impact is low. The locations are pushed in source order, so the vector is already sorted. binary_search gives the same result at lower cost.

Stop an inline link at a line break after its name.
If {@link Foo ends at a line break, next_token() calls the ordinary lexer, which skips that line break. link() then cannot see Token::NewLine and can consume a following @param tag as link text. Preserve the line-break boundary when advancing a link name so the following tag remains available to the JSDoc scanner.

Check that the subtraction cannot underflow.
self.containing_classes.len() - usize::from(self.is_in_class_decorator) underflows if is_in_class_decorator is true while containing_classes is empty. decorators sets the flag only after class has pushed the class. class clears the flag on entry and restores it on exit. Under that sequence the subtraction is safe. The invariant is implicit, though. saturating_sub costs nothing and removes the risk if a later caller sets the flag outside class.

Linear duplicate scan on every early check.
note_external_emit_helpers_check scans all of emit_helpers_checked_early with any before each push. order_of_expression also runs position over the same list for each request. Both scans are O(n) per lookup, so a file with many private accesses or object rests costs O(n²) in total. The guard on import_helpers limits the impact. A HashMap<(FileId, ExprId), usize> index would make each lookup constant time.

hir.text[from as usize..start as usize] panics in two cases: hir.text is empty (default library files do not keep their text), or from > start. Report the config error when directory discovery finds no files.
If projects.load fails and the directory has no discoverable source files, this fallback adds nothing to by_project. check_paths then reports “Nothing to check” without calling check_project_of, which holds the cached config error. Queue the failed config for reporting even when file discovery returns no files.

Beyond the inline findings, I also audited every caller of the new Result-returning config::load_overriding (src/sema/driver/lib.rs:1212, :1250, :1823 and src/sema/baselines/lib.rs:1535, :1630) — each handles Err via .ok() or .map(..).unwrap_or_default(), so the signature change does not leave a caller that silently defaults an unreadable config. Single large commit (69 files, +3463/-1397) across the Rust TypeScript checker and tolerant parser, plus 817 new lines of differential test cases; no security-sensitive surface (no auth, crypto, or path-from-untrusted-input handling beyond tsconfig parsing). Two confirmed findings are posted inline (case-sensitive JSX extension filter in errors_jsx.rs, and TS6053 instead of a parse error for an unparseable tsconfig in driver/lib.rs), so human review is already signaled; this body only records the additional sites checked and found unaffected.
One part of this review's analysis that stopped early was run once more. It finished.

src/sema/check/errors_jsx.rs— Users checking a JSX file whose extension is upper-case (App.TSX,z.JSX) underjsx: "react-jsx"get a missing TS2875 or a false TS2874 that tsc does not produce. The PR makes the loader treat such names as TSX case-insensitively (is_jsx_file_namein program.rs), butcheck_jsxstill filters the implicit runtime import with case-sensitivepath.ends_with(b".tsx") || path.ends_with(b".jsx")at errors_jsx.rs:37, soruntimeisNoneandhas_no_importsis true forApp.TSX. Fix: decide "this file can hold JSX" through one predicate,crate::resolve::is_jsx_file_name, at every checker site, which covers the 2 sites listed. Same pattern at 2 sites (src/sema/check/errors_jsx.rs:37, src/sema/check/errors_enums_names.rs:274).Why this was flagged
A project has
App.TSXcontaining<div />, tsconfigjsx: "react-jsx",types: []and noreact/jsx-runtimeinstalled;bun checkrunscheck_jsxon it. After this PRsummarize(src/js_parser/sema/mod.rs:625) parsesApp.TSXas TSX viaScriptKind::from_file_name, and the loader adds the syntheticreact/jsx-runtimeimport because program.rs:5116 now usescrate::resolve::is_jsx_file_name(path). Incheck_jsx, errors_jsx.rs:37 still filtersruntimewithpath.ends_with(b".tsx") || path.ends_with(b".jsx"), which is false forApp.TSX, soruntimeisNoneandhas_no_imports(errors_jsx.rs:49) is true. The block at errors_jsx.rs:112 that callsresolve_external_module_at(..., Some(2875))never runs, so the TS2875 tsc reports for the unresolvable runtime is missing. On the base branchApp.TSXwas parsed as plain TS so JSX never reachedcheck_jsx; the added differential case forx.TSXusesjsx: "preserve", which never takes the runtime-import path, so it does not cover this.Verification:
check_jsxkeeps the old case-sensitive filter at src/sema/check/errors_jsx.rs:37:.filter(|_| path.ends_with(b".tsx") || path.ends_with(b".jsx")), untouched by the diff. ForApp.TSXruntimeisNone, so the block at errors_jsx.rs:112-130 that callsresolve_external_module_at(..., Some(2875))never runs and TS2875 is never reported when the runtime module is missing, whereas tsc reports it.
…s read is never "not found" `App.TSX` under `jsx: react-jsx` missed TS2875: the checker tested the extension by itself, case-sensitively, where the loader goes by the script kind. A tsconfig.json that is nested too deeply for the parser stopped the check with "Cannot read file", or "File not found" under `-b`, and no file was checked. Only a file that cannot be read stops it, as in tsc. Tests for both, and for a referenced tsconfig.json that cannot be read. Names for the two flags of `get_symbol_flags_ex` and for the two results of `library_name_and_resolve_from`, and no call that loads a project and ignores whether it could. [skip size check]

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, I re-checked the tsconfig loading path from my earlier review after the second commit: config::load_overriding now returns Err only when host.read fails (a readable file the parser gives up on becomes an empty project carrying its error), so both build sites in src/sema/driver/lib.rs (check_project_of and setup_build_task) only emit TS6053 for a genuinely unreadable file, and the new deep-nesting and unreadable-reference tests cover it.
Extended reasoning...
The second commit changed load_overriding in src/sema/config.rs to fall back to host.read(path).map(|_| Raw::default()) when parsing fails, which resolves the concern raised in the prior review about an unparseable tsconfig being reported as "not found" under -b. The PR remains a large checker/parser change (71 files) with no security-sensitive surface; a human look is still warranted given its size, and one verified finding is posted inline.

`"".repeat` is slow in debug builds of JavaScriptCore. One helper for the ten places in check.test.ts. The fixtures are the same text. [skip size check]
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I re-reviewed the two pushes since my last comments and found no new bugs; both earlier points are addressed (load_overriding now returns Err only when host.read fails, so a readable-but-unparseable tsconfig no longer becomes "not found" under -b, and the fixtures use the shared repeat helper). Given the size of the change across the checker and parser, a maintainer's look is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...
The PR touches 71 files (+3575/-1415) in the Rust type checker (src/sema) and its parser front-end (src/js_parser), plus the differential test suite; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface, though it does change tsconfig loading error handling and a parser lexer field. Since the prior review, commit 14cccec made load_overriding return Err only on an unreadable file and added tests for unreadable and deeply nested tsconfigs, and commit 1381606 replaced String.repeat with a Buffer.alloc helper, addressing both inline comments I had posted. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings on the current version. The change is far too large and semantically intricate (symbol-flag resolution, union preservation, flow-loop re-entrancy) to approve without a human, so defer.

🟡 (optional) A bun check of a class whose property annotation nests [] or readonly tens of thousands deep can abort with a stack overflow instead of the graceful "ran out of stack" path. is_resolved_by_check_source_element at src/sema/check/check_source_file.rs:2196-2207 recurses once per Array/Readonly level with no is_stack_low/StackCheck guard, unlike check_type_node (src/sema/check/check_source_file.rs:1335) which walks the same node first and stops safely. Fix: make the helper iterative (loop on of) or stop at the stack check like every other type-node walker, so no depth of [] suffixes can overflow a 4 MB checker thread stack; Rust gives no tail-call guarantee, so debug/ASAN lanes hit it first.
Why this was flagged
The parser builds number[][]...[] iteratively (src/js_parser/parse/parse_skip_typescript.rs:2897-2929), so a class property such as class C { x: number[][]…[]; } with ~100,000 suffixes reaches the checker as a 100,000-deep chain. check_members (src/sema/check/check_source_file.rs:1183-1190) calls the new is_resolved_by_check_source_element(hir, member.ty) for every non-computed property. That function (src/sema/check/check_source_file.rs:2196-2207) recurses one frame per Array/Readonly level and has no is_stack_low() or bun_core::StackCheck guard, while check_type_node (src/sema/check/check_source_file.rs:1335) returns early on a low stack and sets the "ran out of stack" diagnostic. Checker threads have a 4 MB stack (src/threading/ThreadPool.rs:728-730), so once the chain is deeper than the stack allows the process dies with SIGSEGV. On the base branch this condition was member.ty.is_none(), which does not walk the type. rustc does not guarantee tail-call elimination, so at minimum debug and ASAN builds overflow.
Verification: Trigger: a .ts file with a non-computed class property whose annotation is a []/readonly chain tens of thousands deep. The helper at src/sema/check/check_source_file.rs:2196-2207 is plain self-recursion with no stack guard, called for every non-computed property at check_source_file.rs:1183-1185; on the base this input ends in the graceful "ran out of stack" path.

🟡 nit (optional): maintainers get a second copy of the script-kind extension table that can drift from the first. The new is_jsx_file_name at src/sema/resolve.rs:370 re-lists .tsx/.jsx with its own case-insensitive compare, while ScriptKind::from_file_name at src/sema/resolve.rs:349 already maps the same extensions, so a change to one (a new JSX extension, a different dot rule) silently misses the other. Fix: derive one from the other, e.g. matches!(ScriptKind::from_file_name(path), Some(ScriptKind::Tsx | ScriptKind::Jsx)), so the five callers in program.rs, errors_jsx.rs and errors_enums_names.rs share the one table.
Why this was flagged
The diff adds is_jsx_file_name (src/sema/resolve.rs:370-375), which finds the last . and compares the extension case-insensitively against .tsx and .jsx. The same file already has ScriptKind::from_file_name (src/sema/resolve.rs:349-358), which lowercases the same extension and maps .jsx to ScriptKind::Jsx and .tsx to ScriptKind::Tsx. Both implement GetScriptKindFromFileName and today agree, so no user-visible failure exists now; the cost is two copies of one table that future edits must keep in sync. The new helper is called from src/sema/program.rs:3149, 5453, 5800, src/sema/check/errors_jsx.rs:37 and src/sema/check/errors_enums_names.rs:286, so a divergence would change which files get the implicit JSX runtime import and TS2875. On the base branch those sites compared path.ends_with(b".tsx") || path.ends_with(b".jsx") inline, so the duplication is new with this change rather than pre-existing.
Verification: nit. The diff adds is_jsx_file_name at src/sema/resolve.rs:370-375, twelve lines below the existing ScriptKind::from_file_name at src/sema/resolve.rs:349-358, which already does the same last-dot split and to_ascii_lowercase mapping of b".jsx" => ScriptKind::Jsx and b".tsx" => ScriptKind::Tsx. Today the two agree, so no user-visible failure exists; harm is maintenance drift only.
…`, and the cost of copies of a package (#44726) Follow-up to #44685. Fixes nine kinds of program on which `bun check` reported an error and `tsc` 7.0.2 reports none, one on which it missed an error, long runs of `!`, and the cost of several copies of one package. Fixes #44656. ### A narrowed `NoInfer` value spread inside a generic call `bun check` left the spread's properties out of the object and then reported TS2322. ```ts type Item = { done: boolean; title: string | undefined }; declare function useData<T>(select: () => T): { data: NoInfer<T> | undefined }; declare function selectItem(): Item | undefined; declare function memo<T>(factory: () => T): T; export function withId(id: string): { id: string; done: boolean; title: string | undefined } | undefined { const { data: item } = useData(selectItem); return memo(() => (item !== undefined ? { id, ...item } : undefined)); } ``` ### An empty object next to a spread, under a type like vitest's `DeeplyAllowMatchers` `expect.objectContaining({ input: {}, ...rest })` reported TS2615, once for every member of the union but the first. ```ts interface Matcher { match(other: unknown): boolean } type Deep<T> = T extends Array<infer E> ? T | Matcher | { [K in keyof T]: Deep<T[K]> } : T | Matcher; declare function objectContaining<T = any>(expected: Deep<T>): any; declare const extra: { name: string } | { name?: undefined }; objectContaining({ input: {}, ...extra }); ``` ### Arrow functions that return objects in an `as const` table `it.each([...] as const)` with rows like these reported TS7024. ```ts type Args<T extends ReadonlyArray<any>> = { 2: [T[0], T[1]]; fallback: Array<T extends ReadonlyArray<infer U> ? TypeScript 7.0.2 does not, and it does again if `isHydrated` is removed or moved below `assertHydrated`. `bun check` follows 7.0.2 in all of those. All four print nothing now, like `tsc`. ### Types reached through `globalThis`, with `bun-types` next to `@types/node` 24 Every type written `globalThis.X` failed with TS2694. One report had 29 of these in a Next.js monorepo (#44729). `NodeJS.BuiltinIteratorReturn` became `unknown` for the same reason (#44689). ```ts export const direct: ResponseInit = { status: 204 }; export const qualified: globalThis.ResponseInit = { status: 204 }; export interface Extended extends globalThis.RequestInit { retries?: number; } ``` ### A function through `useCallback`, then given to a generic function This one came in with #44685. It reported TS7024 on the arrow function. The result can be a template literal, an object, an array or a function. If the arrow function is itself generic, any receiver will do. ```ts declare function useCallback<T extends Function>(callback: T, deps: readonly unknown[]): T; declare function useList<T>(options: { rows: readonly T[]; label?: (row: number) => string }): void; export function list(rows: readonly string[]) { const label = useCallback((row: number) => `row ${row}`, []); useList({ rows, label }); } ``` ### Many layers of an object with a spread (#44727) From 34 layers on this reported TS2589. `tsc` accepts 99. ```ts const id = <T>(x: T) => x; const nest = <T>(x: T) => id({ nested: { tag: 0, ...x } }); const eight = <T>(x: T) => nest(nest(nest(nest(nest(nest(nest(nest(x)))))))); const value = eight(eight(eight(eight(eight({ value: 0 }))))); declare function consume<T>(x: typeof value): T; consume(value); ``` ### Polymorphic components (#44656) Kobalte with solid-js. It reported TS2589 on the first component of a file. ```tsx import type { ValidComponent } from 'solid-js' import type { PolymorphicProps } from '@kobalte/core/polymorphic' import * as TooltipPrimitive from '@kobalte/core/tooltip' export const First = <T extends ValidComponent = 'button'>( props: PolymorphicProps<T, TooltipPrimitive.TooltipTriggerProps<T>> ) => <TooltipPrimitive.Trigger {...props} /> ``` ### "Type 'A' is not assignable to type 'A'" (#44660) An arrow function given where a generic function is expected, in a call that is generic itself. ```ts interface Box<A, R> { readonly a: A; readonly r: R } declare function run<A, R>(box: Box<A, R>): Promise<A[]>; declare function make<R>(runner: <A>(box: Box<A, R>) => Promise<A[]>, tag: R): void; make((box) => Promise.resolve(0).then(() => run(box)), "tag"); ``` ### A missing TS2345 (#44686) `tsc` reports that `"a"` is not assignable to `never`. `bun check` reported nothing. ```ts type Client<K extends string> = { db: K } & { [P in K]: (data: P) => void }; export function f<T extends "a" | "b">(c: Client<T>, name: T) { c[name]("a"); } ``` ### Long runs of `!` ```sh echo "declare const x: { a: number } | undefined; export const y: number = x$(printf '!%.0s' {1..60000});" > a.ts bun check a.ts --strict ``` ``` a.ts(1,58): error TS2322: Type '{ a: number; }' is not assignable to type 'number'. Found 1 error in 1 file, checked 1 file [5.76ms] ``` That is what `tsc` reports. The current canary crashes on this file. With 5,000 `!` it takes 23 seconds, says it ran out of stack and does not report the error. The length of the run does not matter now. ### Several copies of one package A `node_modules` tree can hold the same version of a package many times. `tsc` keeps one copy in the program, after it has read and parsed all of them, and so did `bun check`. Now the other copies cost little. The errors are the same.
