…ry build mode A macro call's arguments are visited with a table of their own, which holds every const with a known value at any statement position. The table stands in for const_values only for that visit, so ordinary code keeps the inliner's rules. A macro string result that is ASCII is stored as 8-bit, like a string literal, so that it joins in a template or a +. Three readers of a joined string now read all of it: require.resolve(), feature() and the type of an import() attribute.

The 8-bit rule for macro string results, two reader repairs and the cache version bump leave this branch: open #38944 owns the readers and #42019 the string storage. The table gets its own admission rule, a declaration inside an argument is recorded by role, a binding that takes its default is never recorded, and a call under a with object or a direct eval keeps the old path. An ASCII string from a macro joins in a template or a + while the arguments are visited.

…val by its function A const binding that takes its default from an undefined macro value now holds that default for macro arguments and for the inliner, when the default is a primitive or a string. A let or var binding and any other default stay unrecorded. A direct eval now keeps the old path only for a macro call inside the function that holds the eval. The module scope no longer counts, so an eval elsewhere in the file does not turn the table off.

…version 35 A direct eval no longer turns the macro argument table off. A file that imports a macro is a module, where a var that the eval declares stays inside the eval, and the inliner does not model a direct eval either. The with gate stays. feature() reads all of a joined flag name in every file, so the output of a cached file can change. The cache version goes to 35.

I re-reviewed the latest pushes (14ae224, ce139fb) and found no new bugs; the points raised earlier are addressed in code (EXPECTED_VERSION is now 35 in src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerCache.rs, the direct-eval bail is gone from visit_macro_arguments, a known default is recorded in record_macro_result, and the test at macro-test.test.ts:807 now asserts typeof random and object.a). Because this changes parser semantics for every file that imports a macro, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed: the const_values/macro_.consts swap in visit_macro_arguments — the restore runs unconditionally after the arg loop with no early return between (the two bails happen before any state is touched), and nested macro calls are refused by in_args. The moved forced-fold block in e_call still precedes the argument visit and restores through the same saved-state block, so require/require.resolve and dropped calls keep base behavior. The non-macro path of visit_decl keeps the is_after_const_local_prefix gate inline, so files without a macro import are unchanged. macro_string_for_join only converts a UTF-16 string that first_non_ascii16 proves all-ASCII, so the Latin-1/UTF-8 distinction does not arise.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches the JS parser's const-inlining tables (src/js_parser/parser.rs, src/js_parser/visit/mod.rs, visit_binary.rs, visit_expr.rs), the runtime transpiler cache version, docs, and two test files; it introduces a second const table that is swapped into place while macro arguments are visited and relaxes which const declarations a macro call may read. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. The three findings posted on the previous version are addressed by the two newest commits and the cache version bump covers the feature() reader change. The change is deferred rather than approved because it alters parser semantics (a hoisted function or later case now builds with a value where plain JS would throw a TDZ error) and the state-swapping design is non-trivial, which a maintainer should weigh.
…o-const-arguments
The macro runtime keeps a call to a macro import as a run-time call, so its arguments are visited as ordinary code again. Tests: pin the rope flatten, the left operand of a join, a late macro object under inlining, each kind of primitive, a namespace import, a macro import below the const, and the shapes one const away that stay rejected. The rejected shapes are built in the test process. The cross-case switch read and the let and var substitutions are no longer pinned. Docs: the output block needs the minify syntax option, and a join belongs inside the argument.

This push closes the last point I had open (the bun run sibling test for the folded feature() flag name); this automated review ran again on the current head and found no bugs, but a maintainer look is still worthwhile because the change reworks how the parser records const values around macro calls and bumps the runtime transpiler cache version.
What was reviewed this run:
- The new
reads a folded flag name whole at runtime with bun runtest: both theENABLED_FEATUREandENABLED_runs fail on the base branch (the base compared only the rope head), pipes are drained withPromise.all, and resources useawait using/tempDir. - Re-read
visit_macro_arguments,put_const, andrecord_macro_resultfor save/restore balance ofconst_values,in_args, andfeatures.inlining— each is restored on the one exit path after the args loop. - Checked
maybe_replace_bundler_feature_call:resolve_rope_if_neededruns before the UTF-16 check and the flag lookup, so the whole joined name is compared.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches the JS parser's const-value tracking (src/js_parser/parser.rs, src/js_parser/visit/mod.rs, visit_binary.rs, visit_expr.rs), adding a second const table that is swapped into place while macro call arguments are visited, with forced inlining inside those arguments and an ASCII copy of UTF-16 macro string results so they fold in + and templates. It also changes the feature() reader to flatten a rope before comparison and bumps RuntimeTranspilerCache EXPECTED_VERSION to 35, plus docs and about 500 lines of tests. No security-sensitive surface is involved. The only change since my previous review is a test commit that addresses the nit I raised; the hunt ran dry with no findings. I did not approve because the change is a non-trivial parser semantics rework (+761/-52) in a hot, widely shared code path where a maintainer should weigh the new rulings (hoisted-function and case reads of a later const, defaulted destructured macro results) rather than an automated reviewer alone.
Each case loaded its file with one or two spawned processes. In a debug build that is about a second for each process, and the cases run at the same time. Most cases now import the file, or build it with Bun.build, in the test process. One case for each of bun run, bun build and bun build --minify-syntax still goes through the command line.
Run together, the cases share the bundler threads, and each one takes as long as the whole group (up to 4 s in a debug build). One at a time each takes under a second. Bun.Transpiler is also called in the test process, with an absolute macro import. The command line cases assert an empty stderr. The todo for a non-ASCII piece has a body and states the error that it gets today.

MacroState::constsis filled only in a file that imports a macro. It holds eachconstwhose visited initializer is a primitive or a string. Under inlining it also holds whatconst_valuesholds, so the shapes that main accepts there keep their result:let x = getFoo(); id(x), an object that a macro returned, a destructured binding. A string that a macro returns directly is UTF-16 (Run::coerce; aResponse, aBlob, JSON and object keys are 8-bit already). While the arguments are visited, an ASCII one gets an 8-bit copy at the two fold sites, so a template or a+joins it. Outside the arguments this changes nothing:require("./c/" + getFoo() + ".js")stays as written, and a test pins that. What code outside the arguments sees. The same tables as on main. A test pins
try { read() } catch {} const N = 5; function read() { return N }in a file that imports a macro:bun runstill reports the ReferenceError. The assign-to-const message and dynamicimport()/require()specifiers are pinned too. Aconstthat a macro argument and ordinary code both read is pinned in one file and across two files. The macro runtime does not run a macro that a macro module imports: it keeps the call, and the table is not used for it. A test pins() => answer(N)in such a module.Rulings for a maintainer.
constand is called above it builds with the value, where plain JS throws a TDZ ReferenceError. A test pins that. Acasethat reads aconstof anothercasebuilds with the value too, and no test pins it: in ordinary code that read is Bun inlines constants across switch cases, preventing an error that would happen in node #18477, and the review of js_parser: fix four folds that change valid programs (switch const, [x][0](), new.target, assignment targets) #30936 asks whether aswitchis special there. A maintainer decides whether a macro argument may take a value where plain JS throws.bun buildit stays the identifier error, because the program can change the object after the macro returned it (const o = getObj(); o.a = 2; id(o)).id(getObj())works in every mode.withobject keeps the path of main: the object can shadow theconst, and the call knows that it stands inside thewith. This scope walk is a stopgap. Open js_parser: let awithobject shadow a const #42524 puts the same rule intohandle_identifier, which macro arguments read through.evalis not modeled, as in the inliner on main. A file that imports a macro is a module, so avarthat theevaldeclares stays inside theeval. A test pinsfunction f() { eval("var N = 7"); return id(N) }as 5. The exception is code that runs as sloppy CommonJS:--format=cjsoutput, and a file thatbun runloads as CommonJS because it also assignsmodule.exports. Therereturn [id(N), N]gives[5,7]. Node gives[7,7]for a plain functionid, and main gives[5,5]when the inliner takesN.handle_identifierskip the substitution in a scope that contains a directeval. Macro arguments read through that line. With both PRs the eval test of this PR fails, because for a macro argument a skipped substitution is a build error. A maintainer has to pick one rule for the two PRs.constbinding that takes its default holds the default, when the default is a primitive or a string. On mainconst { a = 7 } = m(); console.log(a, id(a))printsundefined undefinedunderbun runwhen the macro givesa: undefined. It prints7 7now, in every mode.undefinedunder inlining: aletorvarbinding that takes its default (the program can assign to it), a default that is an object or is not a literal after the visit, and a property that the macro result does not have (the program reads it from the prototype:const { toString = 5 } = {}). Open js_parser: tighten when a macro result may enter const_values #35548 has the narrower rule, never recorded.letandvarbindings that hold a macro result behave as on main: accepted under inlining, the identifier error in plainbun build. No test of this PR pins the acceptance, because open js_parser: tighten when a macro result may enter const_values #35548 removes it for Bug with--minify-syntaxand macro #12067.Open pulls that touch the same code. Macro arguments read through

So four pieces of this PR are stopgaps for rules that other open pulls own.feature()lines, theFoldedFlagNametest and cache version 35 are the same as there. They are the only effect of this PR on a file without a macro import:feature("A" + "B")underbun runor--minify-syntaxread only"A".macro_string_for_joinis not needed and the non-ASCII todo passes. It also joinsrequire("./c/" + getFoo() + ".js"), which a test of this PR pins as not joined.withobject shadow a const #42524 owns thewithrule and js_parser: keep const references and top-level names in scopes with a direct eval #40801 the directevalrule (see Rulings).const_valuestakes from a macro result: noletorvar, no object. The table of this PR has its own admission rule.e_calland the two error sentences that the tests of this PR match. This PR does not editMacro.rs.Self-review. The first review raised 11 concerns, all addressed. One part was rejected: a
constin aforinitializer (for (const i = 0; ; ) id(i)) is not recorded, because that adds a test to eachforstatement for a shape that is almost never written. A test pins the error. The second review, atce139fb4f14, raised 9 concerns. Addressed: the narrower title and limits, the macro runtime, the tests that pinned theswitchread and theletandvarsubstitution, tests for each clause of the fix, the docs lines, and this body. The tracking issue for the limits is being filed. Rejected: a second predicate that stops the macro runtime from filling the table, because nothing can observe it, and a shared dispatch predicate ine_call, because it adds a test to the path of each call.Limits that stay. The initializer of a
constis ordinary code, and the table takes it only when the visit leaves a literal there. Soconst B = A; id(B),const T = 30 * 1000; id(T)andconst url = base + "/api"; id(url)work only underbun runand--minify-syntax, and only when the consts that they read stand in the leading declaration run. Below a statement they are the identifier error in every mode, and so is aconstthat holds a template with a macro result. Tests pin these errors. To evaluate the initializer against the table of macro arguments is a follow-up. Aconstbelow the call stays an error: the review of #27167 rejected an extra pass over the statements, and #27160, which narrowed the inliner, was closed at once. Also not covered: an awaited macro result, an object or array literalconst, aconstimported from another module (#21261 for a text import), tagged-template macro calls. These limits get a tracking issue, because this PR closes #16969 and #6865.Measurements. Base is a release build of main at
