What does this PR do?

Keep socket close events working when application code replaces timer APIs. node:net currently schedules these callbacks through the writable global setImmediate, so fake timers can strand the callback and leave teardown waiting forever.

Minimal repro:

const net = require("node:net");
globalThis.setImmediate = () => {};
const server = net.createServer(socket => socket.end());
server.listen(0, "127.0.0.1", () => {
  const client = net.connect(server.address().port, "127.0.0.1");
  client.resume();
  client.on("close", () => {
    console.log("closed");
    server.close();
  });
});

Bind node:net to the native immediate scheduler. This preserves the existing event ordering while keeping socket lifecycle callbacks independent of replacements to the global or node:timers exports.

Found while running OpenClaw on Bun.

How did you verify your code works?

Native Linux x64 release builds from upstream base 4b02e1031d6195d96fc0446dfbff49297f89f2d6, built with bun scripts/build.ts --profile=release --lto=off.

  • Before: both new close-order tests fail because no close event arrives.
  • Node v24.19.0: all four peer/local-close and before/after-import variants pass.
  • After: the complete test/js/node/net/ suite passes: 262 passed, 38 skipped, zero failures (12 files), including both new close-order tests. Run with the patched release binary, --expose-internals, and --max-concurrency 2.
  • Independent code review found no actionable P0–P2 findings.

Walkthrough

The node:net module now uses the native timer implementation to schedule socket lifecycle callbacks. Regression tests cover peer and local shutdown when timer APIs are replaced.

Changes

Socket close scheduling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Socket lifecycle scheduling and regression coverage
src/js/node/net.ts, test/js/node/net/node-net.test.ts, docs/runtime/nodejs-compat.mdx
The net module binds setImmediate to the native timer implementation. Subprocess tests check socket event order and successful closure when timer APIs are replaced before or after importing node:net. The compatibility entry describes this behavior.

Suggested reviewers: robobun

Priority: Low

Merge Risk: Low · up to 028c0

The socket behavior has regression coverage, but slow test runs may fail before a close event arrives. Address the fixture timing and test concurrency before merging, or accept the bounded test risk.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 028c0

The change makes socket teardown independent of application timer overrides without introducing new network access or privileges. Remaining uncertainty concerns shutdown ordering under errors, TLS teardown, and socket reuse.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effective scope is processes using node:net lifecycle paths, including shared-handle TLS teardown and server shutdown. Network peers can already trigger socket shutdown; this change does not give them control over the scheduled callback or expand their network permissions.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Internal lifecycle callbacks now use a module-owned native scheduler rather than the writable global or node:timers export. The callback remains selected by node:net; no peer-provided callback or code is passed into this binding.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Existing stream destruction code marks destruction before invoking callbacks, rejects repeated destruction, and guards its completion callback against repetition. These controls and the socket's captured-handle cleanup are unchanged; they provide static counterevidence to a newly introduced duplicate-cleanup failure, not exhaustive runtime proof.

Remove the explicit test timeout from the fixture.

The timer is a failure watchdog, but it is still an explicit test timeout. This violates the critical test guidance. The outer test already owns the subprocess with await using; let Bun's test timeout fail the test and dispose the subprocess.

Rebased onto 9bd19c98e. Preserved upstream’s reconnect tests alongside the timer-replacement regressions. Both new close-order tests fail before and pass after; all four Node 24.21.0 peer/local-close and before/after-import controls pass. On macOS, the full file went from 116 passing / 5 failing to 119 passing / 2 failing (8 skips). The two remaining reconnect failures also occur before this change; the neighboring net-server file passed all 27 tests before and after.

Run the four subprocess cases concurrently.

The loop waits for each child to exit before starting the next case. Each case runs in its own subprocess and binds its server to port 0, so the cases do not share socket state. Use it.concurrent.each to follow the test guidance and avoid serializing the four socket lifecycles.

The define also covers the six setImmediate sites of node:net, so the

to the block in globals.test.js, adapted to its helper.

builtins-format-version.test.ts holds BUILTINS_FORMAT_VERSION and
