bundler(splitting): one edge rule for both walks; no chunk imports an unhashed entry - #44023
Conversation
…a browser entry without [hash] The pass that picks which entry point lays out a shared chunk and the pass that lays it out followed imports with two copies of the same rules. The copies differed on namespace exports, so the wrong entry point could own a chunk and an import cycle read `undefined`. Both now call `for_each_edge`. With `target: "browser"`, shared code no longer folds into an entry point whose name has no `[hash]`. A page can load that file as `index.js?v=1`, and an `import "./index.js"` in a lazy chunk then ran it a second time.

Qualify the browser folding rule and shared-code example.
With target: "browser" and unhashed naming, a JavaScript entry remains pinned even when an HTML page loads it. Only an actual HTML entry (Loader::Html) bypasses this URL-safety condition. Qualify the shared-code example and document this precise exception.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the for_each_edge extraction against the old EntryWalk::walk loop in src/bundler/linker_context/findAllImportedPartsInJSOrder.rs — part-index values, runs/parts_live gating, the ImportKind::Stmt rule, and namespace-export emission after all parts at index parts.len() are unchanged; the only divergence is the intended one in load_rank. Also checked entry_naming_has_hash in src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs: an empty entry_naming (the [dir]/[name].[ext] default) is correctly treated as unhashed, and the server-build browser-chunk case that reads a different transpiler's naming is already excluded by the Target::Browser check.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the bundler's code-splitting linker (edge-walk refactor shared by load_rank and EntryWalk, plus a new pin rule in merge_small_chunks gated on browser target and unhashed entry naming), with plumbing through LinkerOptions, options.rs, docs, types, and bundler_splitting tests. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Two inline findings are already posted; this note only records that the refactor half was diffed line-for-line against the old loop and found behavior-preserving, and that the hash predicate's empty-default and server-build inputs were checked.
…old tests in both layouts Bun and Node also key ES modules by the full URL, so an entry loaded as `entry.js?v=1` ran twice there too. The rule no longer looks at the target. Each fold test now runs with a plain entry name (nothing folds into it) and with `[hash]` in the name (the fold), on its original target. `EntryWalk` keeps one vec of owned chunks instead of two parallel vecs.

I re-reviewed after f893809 and found no bugs; since this rewrites the edge enumeration both order walks depend on and changes the default chunk-fold layout for every target, a human look at the linker changes is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- Traced
for_each_edgeagainst both deleted loops:walkis byte-for-byte equivalent (CSS/HTML exclusivity, Stmt-vs-runs gating, LoadNow re-targeting, LoadLater no-op, namespace-export part atparts.len()); the only divergence inload_rankis that namespace-export dependencies now come after theimportstatements instead of first (part index 0), which is the intended fix and whatSharedChunkOwnerIgnoresNamespaceExportOrderasserts. - Traced
entry_naming_has_hash: the JS API and CLI both land intranspiler.options.entry_naming(empty when unset, so[hash]is absent and the pin applies), bake/--compileset hashed templates, and theLoader::Htmlexemption is keyed on the entry's own source index, with HTML script chunks named by the hashed chunk template. - The second commit addressed both threads from my earlier review (fold tests now run in both layouts via
itFolds; the pin is no longer browser-only), and the docs, README and JSDoc all describe the target-agnostic rule. Note the PR description's "Still folds:target: "bun"and"node"" line is now stale relative to the code.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches the bundler's code-splitting linker: a 235-line refactor of src/bundler/linker_context/findAllImportedPartsInJSOrder.rs that merges the edge-enumeration loops of load_rank and EntryWalk::walk into one shared for_each_edge, a new pin in src/bundler/linker_context/mergeSmallChunks.rs that keeps any non-dynamic entry chunk without [hash] in its name from absorbing folds, plumbing for LinkerOptions.entry_naming_has_hash, and matching docs/README/JSDoc plus test changes that run 15 fold tests in both pinned and hashed layouts. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The refactor was traced as behavior-preserving apart from the intended namespace-export ordering change, and the new commit resolved both threads from the prior review, but the change is not simple: it alters chunk ownership order and the default output layout of every splitting build, so a maintainer should still confirm the design rather than an automated approve.
… chunk gave One rule replaces the checks of the last commits. Before #44023 the order was: the chunks of other classes, then the entry point's code and the code it shares with its import() targets, in evaluation order. The chunk with the shared code (the parent chunk) now holds the first part of that list. The entry point's chunk holds the rest. - One ordered walk per pinned entry point picks the files that move: those that precede a file of the parent chunk. - The first file that cannot move ends the list. A file never runs before an earlier one that stayed. - Syntax decides that a file only declares (`can_be_moved`), not tree-shaking purity. `typeof`, `@__PURE__` calls and `"sideEffects": false` code count as code that runs. - Every chunk imports the parent chunk last, whether or not files moved into it. This also fixes shared code that ran before a chunk that it imports (from #44023). - `__preload` queues an id that no registered graph has. A second entry point on the page keeps its modulepreload links. - Removes `entry_file_imported`, `stays_with_entry` and `parent_runs`.
…at runs, not after every import The chunk that holds the code an entry point shares with its import() targets (the parent chunk) was imported after all other chunks. Only a chunk with a file that runs before the last file of the parent chunk needs that. - A chunk that the walk reaches later now comes after the parent chunk. - Shared code that sets a global now runs before a later chunk of another entry point that reads it. That threw here and before #44023. - Interleaved files keep the order from before #44023. - Files that only declare do not change the rank.
…r as one unit Two of an entry point's own files that import each other ended the list of files that move. A setup file in an import cycle then stayed in the entry point's chunk and ran after the shared code. That case ran before #44023. A file that imports a later candidate now ties all candidates up to that one together. They all move or none does, so no file runs before an earlier one that stayed.
…t's chunk, and its walk lays out the chunk beside it Two fixes for the hashed chunk that holds the code an entry point shares with its `import()` targets. A relative path of an external module (`--external ./src/api/local.js`) is printed as written. Before #44023 that code was in `api/index.js`, so `./local.js` named `api/local.js`. In `index-[hash].js` it named a file that does not exist. That chunk now prints `./api/local.js`. This also removes the rule that such an import stops files from moving. The chunk beside an entry point with exports has not changed place, so it keeps its paths, and a file with such a path stays in the entry point's chunk. `--min-chunk-size` can fold a file that holds `import("./d.js")` into a chunk that an earlier entry point loads. `d.js` then ranked ahead of the entry point that really loads it, and its walk laid out the chunk that repeats that entry point's imports. The build crashed. The entry point whose imports a chunk repeats now always lays out that chunk.
…nk of another entry point loads `index.js` imports `registry.js`, `plugin.js`, `listing.js`. An `import()` target shares the first and the last, and `admin.js` shares `plugin.js`. The two shared files were in one chunk, and one chunk has one place among the imports of `index.js`. So `plugin.js` ran before both (as before #44023) or after both (as on main), and one of these two programs threw: - `plugin.js` reads what `registry.js` sets: ran on main, TypeError here. - `listing.js` reads what `plugin.js` sets: TypeError on main, ran here. The chunk of the shared files is now cut there. Each piece is a chunk with its own place, and both programs run in source order. - A file of the entry point that moves, and an import that the chunk repeats, go into the piece of their place. - A chunk of another entry point cuts once, at its first file with side effects. So the number of pieces is at most one more than the number of such chunks. - The files of an import cycle stay in one piece. No cut is possible there, and the order is that of the fold. - The pieces have the same entry bits, so `segment_of_file` tells them apart in the four places that find a chunk by its key. - A file of the shared code that runs by syntax now ranks its chunk, also in a package with `"sideEffects": false`. Without a rank a piece would come last. - The search for what the load of a file of another entry point evaluates keeps its answer per file, so each file is visited once, not once per entry point. Only the chunk beside an entry point that its name pins is cut. An entry point with exports, and one that takes the fold, have the layout of main.
…es that run later with what it imports An import from a chunk loads all of that chunk. `index.js` imports `x.cjs`, `setup.js`, `store.js`, `config.js`. An `import()` target shares `store.js`, and `other.js` shares `x.cjs` and `config.js`. The chunk of `store.js` calls `require_x()`, so it imports the chunk of `x.cjs`, and `config.js` in that chunk ran ahead of `store.js`. - `config.js` reads what `store.js` sets: ran on main, TypeError here and before #44023. - `setup.js` reads what `x.cjs` sets, and `store.js` reads what `setup.js` sets: TypeError on main, ran here. `x.cjs` runs nothing when its chunk loads. It now goes into a chunk of its own, with what it imports, and both programs run in source order. - The same holds for a runtime helper and for a file that only declares. With `__commonJS` in the chunk of `config.js`, `config.js` ran ahead of the shared code on all builds. - Only files whose load evaluates nothing with side effects go, and only when the rest of their chunk has not loaded at that place. - No cut when only the entry point's own file imports an unwrapped file: the chunk beside it imports nothing then. - `--min-chunk-size` does not fold such a chunk into a chunk that runs something. - Each file is visited once for each class, not once for each entry point.
An entry point takes the code that it shares with its import() targets only with [hash] in its name (#44023). The test "does not list what an imported entry point loads on demand" needs that layout: the chunk of a lazy route imports the output file of the entry point. Cast the metafile option of the helper, as the other tests in this file do. bun-types declares the option as a boolean.
What does this PR do?
Two
--splittingfixes. A shared chunk could still print an import cycle in the wrong order. A lazy chunk could import the entry file, which runs the entry twice when its host loads it with a query string.Fixes #42290. Follow-up to #42695.
