darwin-ci: address review of the tart host scripts (rebased on main) - #43710
Conversation
Follow-ups from the review of #37633, which added scripts/darwin-ci. The scripts now use Bun.spawn with argv arrays instead of Bun.$: a host runs them on whatever bun host.sh installed when it was provisioned, and Bun.$'s quoting differs between releases ($.escape does not produce bash-safe strings, so job.env broke on any commit message containing a quote; literal `*` words were glob-expanded, so collectReports never ran). - shell.ts: `run`/`output` throw on failure, `probe` is for commands whose failure is an answer; `shellQuote` for strings handed to a remote shell - tart.ts: the clone lock is a symlink holding the owner's pid, broken only when that pid is dead; stop/destroy tolerate exactly "not running" / "does not exist" and propagate everything else - bake.ts: validates the ref up front, quotes every argument passed into the guest, and swaps the image in under the clone lock keeping the previous image until the rename succeeds - release-tier.mjs: one copy of the release-tier thresholds shared with scripts/agent.mjs, so bare and tart hosts cannot disagree - job.sh: run BUILDKITE_COMMAND through `bash -e -o pipefail` (sharding already comes from the forwarded env), stop hiding warm-up install output - command hook: host steps also run under `bash -e -o pipefail`; job.env is 0600 and always removed; a cleanup failure no longer masks the test status - pre-exit: an orphan that fails to delete is logged and the rest still reaped - ci-user: createhomedir/dseditgroup only when needed and no longer nothrow; ciUserId rejects uid 0 - host.sh: brew installer and bun pinned by commit/version and sha256 - host.ts: profiles touched by explicit path, agent download cleaned up in finally; agent.ts nightly reap uses `sudo -H` like its siblings - main.ts: --release/--spawn must be positive integers No-Verification-Needed: CI provisioning scripts, no bun runtime surface
Main moved on under this branch: the CI scripts are TypeScript (scripts/agent.mjs is now scripts/agent.ts), the toolchain comes from a script generated by scripts/build/ci-images/spec.ts instead of scripts/bootstrap.sh, there is a "beta" release tier, and brewInstall trusts a formula's tap. The conflicts keep main's behavior, written with this branch's Bun.spawn helpers: - scripts/agent.mjs: deleted, as on main. - lib/release-tier.mjs: deleted. It existed so agent.mjs and darwin-ci shared one copy. scripts/agent.ts now imports only Node, because it is copied alone onto each machine, and the copy of darwin-ci installed on a host cannot import it either. lib/agent.ts uses config.releaseTier again, which has the beta tier. - lib/host.ts: generateBootstrap and bootstrapToolchain(ref) from main, on bootstrapCheckout; brewInstall keeps the tap trust. The shell profile touch is gone: the generated script creates the profiles. - lib/bake.ts: pushes the generated script and passes the two remaining bake.sh arguments through shellQuote.
The scripts tsconfig on main sets exactOptionalPropertyTypes, and the spawn helpers passed cwd and env as possibly-undefined keys. They now spread only the options that were given. kcpassword indexes the key with a modulo, so the element always exists.
collectReports now throws when rsync fails (it used to fail silently every time, because Bun.$ glob-expanded --include=*/). Thrown from runInGuest, that dropped the tests' exit status and the step failed. The hook now shows the copy error and returns the tests' status.
The pin was 1.3.14, from when the branch was written. Hosts provisioned since then got the latest release (1.4.2 on the last Studio), and the provisioner now runs scripts/build/ci-images/spec.ts from main on this bun. Checksums are from the release's SHASUMS256.txt and match the downloaded zips.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new shellQuote used for job.env and the job API token — it is standard POSIX single-quote escaping, so values with quotes, newlines, $ and backticks survive source in the guest — and the probe-based sudoRead/consoleUser rewrites, which preserve the base's empty-means-undefined behavior.
Extended reasoning...
The diff is confined to the macOS CI provisioning scripts under scripts/darwin-ci (no runtime code, no tests) and replaces Bun.$ with argv-array Bun.spawn helpers, changing failure semantics at many sites; the bug hunt was cut off at its finding cap with several confirmed issues posted inline, so a human review is needed regardless.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.
- shell: Bun.spawn throws ENOENT for a missing executable. spawn and runInherit now return exit 127 for it, as a shell does, so probing a tool that is not installed yet (buildkite-agent on a fresh host) no longer aborts provisioning. - tart: the image lock is a flock(2) held by lockf(1) for the life of a child that reads our pipe. The kernel drops it when that child exits, so a killed job leaves no stale lock, and there is no pid to reuse after a reboot. This replaces the pid symlink, whose stale-lock takeover let two waiters both hold the lock. - pre-exit: a guest that will not delete is logged and left for the next job; the hook no longer exits non-zero, which failed a passing job and every later job on the host. - Remove collectReports. The runner uploads its reports from inside the guest through the forwarded job API socket, and nothing on the host reads a copy; the rsync walked both node_modules trees for nothing. - sudoWrite creates the file under umask 077, so a token is never readable by others before the chmod. - agent: fail with a message if launchd has not unloaded the old agent after 60s, instead of letting bootstrap fail with EIO. - bake: delete the previous image before releasing the image lock.

…er-off - The flock file moves to ~/.tart/image.flock. macOS's daily clean-tmps deletes /tmp files untouched for 3 days, and a waiter that then opens a new file at the path takes a second lock while the first holder keeps the old inode. - bake fails, leaving the image untouched, unless the guest powers off within 180s after 'shutdown -h now', instead of force-stopping it and promoting that disk. The ssh status is not checked: the session usually drops as the guest shuts down.

Promise.race does not cancel the losing Bun.sleep(180_000), so a bake whose guest powered off at once still kept the process alive for the rest of the 180s. The timeout is now a setTimeout that is cleared when the race settles.
What does this PR do?
Lands #37771 (Jarred's follow-ups to the review of
scripts/darwin-ci) on current main. His commit is first and unchanged, re-signed. My commits come after it.Bun.spawnwith argv arrays instead ofBun.$, plus the bake, hook and CI-user fixes listed in its message.scripts/build/ci-images/spec.ts, added thebetarelease tier and the tap trust inbrewInstall. The conflicts keep main's behavior in the new style.lib/release-tier.mjsis dropped: it existed soagent.mjscould share it, andscripts/agent.tsnow imports only Node./usr/bin/lockf, released by the kernel when its holder exits. A killed job cannot leave a stale lock.spawn/runInheritreturn exit 127 instead of throwing, so provisioning a fresh host works.collectReportsis removed. The runner uploads its reports from inside the guest, and nothing on the host read the copy (main'sBun.$form of it failed on every job, hidden by.nothrow()).sudoWrite, a clear error if launchd will not unload the agent, the old image deleted under the lock, typecheck fixes, bun 1.4.2 pinned inhost.sh.Running hosts keep their installed copy in
