Problem

  • One component with n conditional children ({p.a ? 1 : 2}, n times) takes 5.2 s and 494 MB for n = 1000, and 448 s and 7 GB for n = 4000.
  • get_id_at (src/react_compiler/ssa/enter_ssa.rs) walks from a use back to the definition. At every join on the way it makes a phi, an identifier and defs entries: n^2 / 2 of each for n values that are live across n joins.
  • EliminateRedundantPhi drops those phis. The identifiers stay, and later passes size tables by their number.

Fix

  • reaching walks back first and makes nothing. A join whose predecessors all reach the same definition takes that identifier and gets no phi.
  • Every other join takes the unchanged upstream path. The surviving identifiers keep their relative order, so the output does not change.
  • end_lookup adds the identifier to defs only where a later lookup can enter the walked region.
  • Verified: test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts (new test, fails on main) and react-compiler-fixtures.test.ts. Output is byte-identical to main for 1,807 fixtures and 2,958 generated components. Self-reviewed: 6 concerns raised, 5 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • EnterSSA gives every definition of a variable its own identifier. A phi is the identifier of a variable after a join, a block with more than one predecessor.
  • The pass is the on-demand algorithm of Braun et al. A use asks its block, the block asks its predecessors, and each keeps the answer in defs.
  • The paper removes a phi whose operands are all the same at once. Upstream leaves that to the next pass.
Notes

Measurements. Release builds on Linux x64, bun build in.jsx --react-compiler --target=browser --external "*", one component with n children {props.a ? 1 : 2}. User CPU time and peak RSS. "main" is the canary build of 367d939, which has the same src/react_compiler as the base of this branch. The machine was under load.

n main this branch
250 0.16 s, 62 MB 0.09 s, 41 MB
500 0.67 s, 165 MB 0.33 s, 49 MB
1000 5.2 s, 494 MB 1.24 s, 74 MB
2000 44.7 s, 1865 MB 3.8 s, 134 MB
4000 448 s, 7034 MB 18.1 s, 248 MB

What is left at n = 4000 is mostly InferReactivePlaces (about two thirds of the samples), which #43259 covers. EnterSSA is about one eighth: the walk itself is still one step per block between a use and its definition, it only no longer allocates.

Typical components do not change: the 1,807 fixtures build in 1.0 s of CPU time on both builds. A corpus of 496 generated components with heavy control flow builds about 10% faster (10.8 to 11.6 s before, 9.8 to 9.9 s after). Identifiers that exist after EliminateRedundantPhi: 3.7% fewer on the fixtures, 21% fewer on the generated corpus, 80% to 94% fewer on the inputs above.

Why the output does not change.

  • A join gets no phi only when every predecessor resolves to one and the same definition. Upstream makes phi(x, x, ...) there, and EliminateRedundantPhi rewrites it to x.
  • Every phi that is still made is made by the upstream code, before its operands are resolved. Upstream allocates in that order too, so the surviving identifiers keep their relative order. Only the absolute ids shrink. Nothing in the crate orders by absolute id (dep_to_sort_key in codegen.rs would, but only for an unnamed dependency, which upstream asserts cannot exist).
  • Loops are as upstream. A block that is reached again while it waits for its predecessors answers with itself, so a sealed loop header keeps its phi and EliminateRedundantPhi removes it as before. An unsealed block still gets its incomplete phi from get_id_at.
  • An identifier that no block defines (a use before the definition, and every read of a context variable) also stays as upstream: a join of it is still a phi. unmark_unknown removes an identifier from unknown only when the lookup returned the old identifier itself, and upstream returns a phi as soon as one join is on the way. Without this rule a closure that captures a not yet defined local behind a join could compile where upstream reports the hoisting error.

How I checked it. With a temporary switch that turns the new branch off inside the same binary, I dumped the HIR after EliminateRedundantPhi with every identifier id replaced by its rank among the ids in use. The dumps are identical for all 1,807 fixtures (1,558 functions reach SSA) and for 895 generated components (loops, labels, switch, try/catch, closures, hoisted reads). An order-preserving renumbering is the only difference this change is allowed to make, and the rank dump is blind to exactly that. Bun's output is byte-identical to main's for the 1,807 fixtures, plain and with minify.syntax (debug builds, build errors included), and for 2,958 generated components (release builds).

The defs entries. Upstream adds the identifier to defs of every block it walks, which is 4 entries per ternary per value on the input above, about 1 GB at n = 4000 after the phis are gone. A later lookup can only come into the walked region from a successor that the walk did not come from. So end_lookup adds the identifier only to blocks with such a successor (it counts, per block, the successors it came from). The bound of upstream holds: a block is expanded at most once per identifier. Blocks on a chain with one predecessor still get their entry from the upstream code.

A block that holds a function expression needs one more step. define_function counts the entry block of the nested function as a successor of that block, and the edge goes away once the function is processed. The second commit takes the count back out. Before it, such a block got an entry from every lookup that passed it. For 2,000 literal children ahead of 200 children {p.c ? <a onClick={() => f(0)} /> : null}, EnterSSA made 427,299 defs entries with the successor still counted and makes 7,200 now. With 4,000 and 400, a release build takes 85 MB more than a twin with the same functions after the joins, and 5 MB less than that twin now.

That input still costs more than its reverse order on this branch: 146 MB (first commit: 235 MB, main: 1,451 MB, release builds). What is left is the copy of its temporaries that codegen makes for each nested function. #43278 removes that copy.

The tests. Each builds two components with the same statements in a different order and compares the peak RSS of the two builds, which cancels what the other passes need.

  • 600 literal children then 50 ternaries, against the reverse (4,000 and 100 in a release build). Only in the first one is each literal live across every join. On main the difference is 40 MB in a debug build and 335 MB in a release build. With the fix it is under 10 MB.
  • Release builds only: 4,000 locals that both arms of an if assign, read after 100 ternaries or before them. A read of such a local finds its phi through the later joins, which is the other path of the new branch in get_id_at. 300 MB on main, within 15 MB with the fix. A debug build has no time for it: a local costs it twice what a literal does.
  • Release builds only: the function expressions inside the arms of 400 joins, against the same functions after the joins. 85 MB with the successor still counted, 5 MB less than the twin now. A debug build has no time for an input where these small entries add up.

The two release-only cases are reported as skipped on the debug and ASAN lanes.

The peak is read from VmHWM inside the child. On Linux ru_maxrss survives exec, so the maxRSS of a child is never below the RSS of the parent at spawn. The test runner of a debug build (350 MB) is larger than either build (260 to 300 MB): through proc.resourceUsage() the 42 MB showed as 6 MB.

Self-review. Six concerns, five addressed:

  • the test did not reach the path where a join takes a phi of an earlier join: the second test above
  • the count of successors kept the edge into a nested function: the second commit, and the third test above
  • nothing told the next person who syncs upstream that reaching follows the cases of get_id_at, and nothing checked that every lookup ends with end_lookup: a sentence on reaching, a debug_assert! on the identifier of the open lookup, and a paragraph on the Not in upstream marker in DESIGN.md
  • two nits in the test (a shadowed name, the wording of the VmHWM comment)
  • rejected: end_lookup skips a block whose identifier it cannot resolve, and a reviewer asked for an assertion, because that cannot happen today. It can once react-compiler: check the stack in every pass that recurses as deep as the source nests #43230 lands: its stack guard can end a lookup early. A missing cache entry costs a walk, nothing else.

A model of the old and the new lookup in JavaScript, written for the review, agreed on 40,000 random structured control-flow graphs (identifiers after EliminateRedundantPhi by rank, and the unknown set), with at most 2.2 times the get_id_at calls of upstream.

The table is from a build of the first commit. A build of the second commit gives the same memory (79 MB, 139 MB and 249 MB for the last three rows) and, under a higher load of the machine, 1.25 s, 5.1 s and 22.7 s.

Not in this PR.

  • A value that is live across a loop still gets one phi at the loop header, as upstream. n values across n loops are still n^2.
  • Context variables are never defined in SSA, so each read of one still makes a phi at every join up to the entry, as upstream.
  • react-compiler: check the stack in every pass that recurses as deep as the source nests #43230 adds a stack guard at the top of get_id_at. The hunks do not overlap. reaching keeps its work list on the heap, so it needs no guard.

no test proof · iteration 4 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts

…value only passes

EnterSSA made a phi, an identifier and a defs entry in every block
between a use and its definition. EliminateRedundantPhi drops the phi of
a join whose predecessors all have the same identifier, but the
identifier stays, and later passes size their tables by the number of
identifiers. n values that are live across n joins made n^2 of each.

A lookup now first walks back without making anything. A join whose
predecessors all reach the same definition takes that identifier. Every
other identifier is made in the same order as before, so the output does
not change. Only the blocks through which a later lookup can enter the
walked region get a defs entry.
… in EnterSSA

define_function counts the entry block of a nested function as a
successor of the block that holds the function expression. That edge
goes away once the function is processed, but the count stayed. So the
block never counted as fully walked, and every lookup that passed it
left a defs entry there.

Also assert that a lookup ends before the next one starts, say in
reaching that it follows the cases of get_id_at, describe the
'Not in upstream' marker in DESIGN.md, and measure a second pair in the
release-size test: locals that are a phi before the joins.

Status: the fix and its test are pushed. CI runs.

How to reproduce the problem on main

bun -e 'require("fs").writeFileSync("in.jsx", `export function App(props) {\n return <div>${"{props.a ? 1 : 2}".repeat(1000)}</div>;\n}\n`)'
bun build in.jsx --react-compiler --target=browser --external "*" > /dev/null

A release build of main takes 5.2 s and 494 MB for 1000 children, and 448 s and 7 GB for 4000. This branch takes 1.2 s and 74 MB, and 18 s and 248 MB. The output is byte-identical.

Test: bun bd test test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts -t "values times the joins" fails on main (42 MB over its twin in a debug build, 335 MB in a release build) and passes on this branch.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also traced two reaching paths against upstream get_id_at: a sealed loop header re-entered mid-walk answers MadeAt(self), which falls through to the unchanged upstream phi creation, and a join whose predecessors all resolve to Unknown is forced to MadeAt so the upstream phi still exists for unmark_unknown to distinguish from the raw identifier. Since this is a ~200-line divergence from the upstream SSA algorithm, a human familiar with the react_compiler port should still look at the equivalence argument.

Extended reasoning...

Findings were reported inline (a vacuous assertion on the debug/ASAN lane of the new test, and missing test coverage for the nested-function successor uncount at enter_ssa.rs:673). Beyond those, I read the new reaching/end_lookup code in src/react_compiler/ssa/enter_ssa.rs against the existing get_id_at cases: the Reaching::Unknown and MadeAt(block_id) arms both return None in get_id_at, so those cases take the byte-for-byte upstream path (make_id + phi), and the loop-closing case is handled by the passed[index].lookup == self.lookup memo hit returning the block's own MadeAt, which makes the header's predecessors disagree and forces a phi as upstream does. The end_lookup back-fill only inserts when defs lacks the key, so it cannot overwrite an identifier the upstream path already recorded. Nothing further concrete to add; the change is an algorithmic divergence in a ported compiler pass rather than something to approve automatically.

… and cover the successor count

The debug lane asserted a constant for the locals pair. Each case is now
its own test, and the two that a debug build has no time for are skipped
there. The third case fails when EnterSSA still counts the entry block
of a nested function as a successor: its twin has the same functions
after the joins, so the copy of the temporaries that codegen makes for
each nested function cancels out.
