src/js/node/http2.ts— Server code calling pushStream() on a closed session with a missing or non-function callback gets ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (or ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH on a pushed stream) where node throws ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED. The PR makes session.closed a pushAllowed term at http2.ts:2507 but the early guard at http2.ts:3213 still only checks session.destroyed, so callback validation at 3219 and the nested-push check at 3222 run before the pushAllowed check at 3226. Fix: check pushAllowed (or add !session.closed to the guard at 3213) before any other validation, as node's pushStream does, so every closed-session call reports ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED regardless of the other arguments.Extended reasoning...
The PR's stated contract is that pushStream() after session.close() reports ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED like node. Node's Http2Stream.pushStream checks
if (!this.pushAllowed) throw new ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED()as its first statement, then ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH, then validateFunction(callback). Bun's order at http2.ts:3213-3228 is: session null/destroyed -> PUSH_DISABLED; callback not a function -> ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (3219); even stream id -> ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH (3222); then pushAllowed (3226). Trigger: server handler runs after session.close() (user call or a received NO_ERROR GOAWAY, which also calls close() at http2.ts:4270) and calls stream.pushStream(headers) with no callback, or stream.pushStream(headers, opts, cb) from a pushed stream. Bun throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE / ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH; node throws ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED. The dismissing finder called this pre-existing, but the base only reached this ordering for enablePush=false; the closed-session population is new to this PR and the PR claims node parity for it. The new test at node-http2.test.js:4791 passes a callback so it…Verification: nit (incomplete fix / pre-existing ordering gap that the PR's own contract now touches). Triggering condition: server code calls
stream.pushStream(headers)with a missing/non-function callback, or on an even-id pushed stream, aftersession.close()(sessionclosedbut not yetdestroyed). Mechanism verified in /home/claude/bun/src/js/node/http2.ts: the PR adds `!session.closed &&…

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the other consumers of the widened ClientHttp2Session.connecting getter — the localSettings/remoteSettings getters (return {} while connecting) and destroy() (ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED while connecting) — and both now match node, whose connecting likewise stays true through the TLS handshake. The server-side ServerHttp2Session.connecting getter is untouched, which is fine since server sockets never carry a pending handshake there.
Extended reasoning...
The second push extended ClientHttp2Session.connecting to include socket.secureConnecting, which addresses the pre-existing TLS-handshake ping issue noted on the previous version. That getter is read in three other places in the same class (localSettings, remoteSettings, destroy); each was traced and behaves as node does during the handshake window, so they are not new regressions. The remaining posted finding (the connected getter now disagreeing with connecting during the handshake) is the only inconsistency found, and a further verified finding was withheld from posting, so approval is not appropriate.

LGTM — the latest commit derives connected from connecting, so the two client getters now read the same socket state and the diff is a small, self-contained match of node's http2 session-lifecycle rules.
What was reviewed:
ping()on both session types: theconnecting || closedcancel sits afterdestroyed/payload/callback validation and before the handle call, the same order and channel (nextTick,ERR_HTTP2_PING_CANCEL, duration 0) as node'sHttp2Session.ping.pushAllowed/pushStream(): the newsession.closed/session.destroyedterms match node's getter, and the closed-session check wins over callback validation as the new test asserts.- Client
connecting/connected/destroyed:secureConnectingis only ever set on TLS sockets (plainnet.Socketleaves it false), a null socket yieldsconnecting=false/connected=false/destroyed=true, and the constructor already gatesonConnecton the same two flags, so no state combination reports connecting and connected together.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR changes 21 lines in src/js/node/http2.ts and adds three tests to test/js/node/http2/node-http2.test.js. It (1) adds !session.closed && !session.destroyed to Http2Stream.pushAllowed and session.closed to the early ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED throw in ServerHttp2Stream.pushStream(), (2) adds a connecting || closed short-circuit to both ServerHttp2Session.ping() and ClientHttp2Session.ping() that cancels the callback on the next tick and returns undefined, and (3) makes ClientHttp2Session.connecting include socket.secureConnecting and derives connected as socket != null && !this.connecting. The fourth commit (14fc473) is the response to the connected finding I posted on the previous push; the getter and the two new test assertions match what was requested.
Security risks
None identified. The change only tightens when a server stream may open a pushed stream and when a PING frame is written; it does not touch TLS configuration, header parsing, or any untrusted-input path. The closed and destroyed flags are internal session state, not user-controlled values.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. This is node-compat code where the reference implementation is the spec, so I checked each new guard against node's lib/internal/http2/core.js ordering: ping() throws ERR_HTTP2_INVALID_SESSION on destroyed, validates payload and callback, then cancels on connecting || closed before touching the handle — the Bun order is identical in both session classes. pushAllowed in node is !destroyed && !closed && !session.closed && !session.destroyed && remoteSettings.enablePush, which the new getter mirrors. For the client getters I confirmed secureConnecting is initialised false on plain net.Socket (net.ts:326) and only true during the TLS handshake (tls.ts:831-900), that a null socket yields connecting=false, connected=false, destroyed=true, and that the constructor's own socket.connecting || socket.secureConnecting check (http2.ts:5686) already treats the handshake window as connecting, so the getters now agree with the existing wiring. No debug build was available in this checkout, so I did not execute the tests; the review is based on reading the code and the test logic.
Other factors
The tests cover the server path (close inside a stream handler, pushStream with and without callback, ping return and async cancel), the client path (close with an open request keeping the session non-destroyed), and the TLS-handshake window (user-supplied createConnection socket, asserting both getters before and after connect). All use in-process servers on port 0 and release the client/server in finally. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files. The CodeRabbit inline threads were resolved by a non-author, and the only item still open from my earlier reviews is the optional note about the duplicated ping guard, which is a style nit rather than a correctness concern. Exit reason was dry_streak, so the hunt ran to completion without being cut off.

LGTM — the error-guard nit from the last pass is addressed in f7a6d5a, and the remaining diff is a small, direct port of node's pushAllowed / ping() guards.
What was reviewed:
pushAllowedand thepushStream()closed-session check against node'slib/internal/http2/core.js— same terms, and theERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLEDthrow now precedes callback validation as in node.- Both
ping()guards:connecting || closedruns after argument validation, returnsundefined, and deliversERR_HTTP2_PING_CANCELonnextTickwith only the error (the0, payloadextras are dropped bymakeHttp2Ping). - The server-side
connecting/connectedgetters were left alone; server sessions are created in theconnectionlistener after ALPN is known, sosecureConnectingis already false there and the asymmetry has no observable effect. - The three new tests wire
erroron every emitter to reject the awaited promise and destroy the client infinallybefore the assertions run.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches only src/js/node/http2.ts (+25/-4) and adds one test file: it adds session.closed/session.destroyed terms to Http2Stream.pushAllowed, checks session.closed in ServerHttp2Stream.pushStream(), short-circuits both ping() methods on connecting || closed, and makes the client connecting getter include socket.secureConnecting with connected derived as its inverse. No security-sensitive surface is involved; this is node-compat behavior for graceful session shutdown. The logic matches node's core.js line for line, the PR gate shows the tests fail on stock bun and pass with the fix, no CODEOWNERS entry covers the file, and the only remaining open thread is a style suggestion (hoisting the duplicated six-line ping guard) that does not affect correctness. The one third-party comment from a maintainer was followed within minutes by a test-only commit whose message matches a plausible request, and no CHANGES_REQUESTED review exists.
After a graceful session.close(), pushAllowed stayed true and pushStream() opened a pushed stream behind the GOAWAY. ping() sent a PING frame and returned true. Node refuses both: pushAllowed is false and pushStream() throws ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED, and ping() cancels the callback on the next tick with ERR_HTTP2_PING_CANCEL and returns undefined. pushAllowed now includes the session closed and destroyed terms. Both session ping() methods short-circuit when the session is connecting or closed, as node does. Fixes #43486
…d session first in pushStream() The client session's connecting getter now includes secureConnecting, so a ping() during the TLS handshake is cancelled as node does. pushStream() reports ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED on a closed session before it validates the callback. The tests destroy the client in finally and assert that the cancelled ping callback runs on a later tick.
Both getters now read the same state, so a session is never connecting and connected at the same time during the TLS handshake.
The cases in node-http2.test.js that spawn a debug bun as the server hit the 5 s timeout under ASAN in a slow container, with or without the fix. A separate file keeps the new cases deterministic.
Node has no connected getter on an http2 session.
…ose tests A failed connect or handshake now reports its cause instead of a timeout.
CI type-checks src/js now. The TLSSocket alias gains an optional secureConnecting so the connecting getter type-checks.

Node keeps a session in the connecting state until the TLS handshake completes, so aping()in that window is cancelled too. Bun's ownconnectedgetter (node has none) is now its inverse.test/js/node/http2/node-http2-session-close.test.ts(three tests, all fail on stock bun). Also all oftest/js/node/http2/and the vendoredtest-http2-*ping*,*push*and*close*node tests. Background
session.close()is the graceful shutdown. It sends GOAWAY and marks the sessionclosed. The session is destroyed once the open streams finish. Until thenclosedis true anddestroyedis false.pushAllowedtells a server stream whether it can send a PUSH_PROMISE. Node ties it to the peer'sSETTINGS_ENABLE_PUSHand to the state of the stream and of the session.ERR_HTTP2_PING_CANCELis the error node reports for a ping that never completes. Bun already uses it for pings that are pending when the session is destroyed.Notes
Output of the repro from the issue, after the fix:
This is the same line node v26.3.0 prints.
Node calls the user ping callback with only the error on cancel (
pingCallbackwrapper in lib/internal/http2/core.js). The duration argument never reaches user code, so the tests assertduration: undefined. The client-side test closes the session while a request is open. That keeps the session in the
closedand notdestroyedstate in both node and bun. An idle session closes and destroys at once in node, andping()then throwsERR_HTTP2_INVALID_SESSIONinstead.The guard reads the public
connectinggetter, not the private#connectedflag. Node sets up an already-connectedcreateConnectionsocket synchronously and sends a ping issued right afterconnect()(checked on node v26.3.0: the callback gets an ack). Bun runs#onConnecton the next tick for that socket, so a#connectedguard would cancel that ping and deviate from node. Withconnecting, the parser queues the frame and flushes it on connect, which gives the same result as node.pushStream()keeps the nested-push check before the fullpushAllowedcheck. Bun marks a pushed streamclosedsynchronously onend()with a small body (node does so later), sotest-http2-server-push-stream.jsexpectsERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSHfrom a pushed stream that already ended. Only the closed-session term moved to the front. The branch is rebased on main. The binary-size check compared FreeBSD binaries built from the old merge base against a newer canary and reported +3.5 MB there (the same numbers as on another PR with the same base). The rebase also picks up the new src/js type check in CI, so the
TLSSocketalias declares the optionalsecureConnectingtheconnectinggetter reads. The existing short-circuit for a missing parser still returns
false. Node has no such path (it throwsERR_HTTP2_INVALID_SESSIONfor a destroyed session), so the return value there is left alone. The tests live in their own file. In
node-http2.test.js, the cases that spawn a debug bun as the server hit the 5 s timeout under ASAN in a slow container, with or without this change, which hides the result of the new cases.Suites run with the debug build: all of
