`enqueue_entry_item` raised `graph.pending_items` first and then ran two steps that can return an allocation error (`path_with_pretty_initialized(..)?` and `graph.input_files.append(..)?`). An error there returned with a count that no task pays back. `wait_for_parse()` runs the event loop until the count is zero, so a driver that waits on its error exit (`scan_module_graph_from_cli`) never returned. Raise the count right before the hand-off, as `enqueue_parse_task` and `enqueue_parse_task2` already do. `enqueue_file_from_dev_server_incremental_graph_invalidation` gets the same order. Its only caller aborts on the error, so nothing changes there today. `on_resolve` dropped the same error with a bare `return`. With a true count that return would let the build go on without the entry point, so the error now goes through `bun_core::handle_oom`, as it does in the twin's caller. A source lint holds the order for every `increment_scan_counter()` call in the bundler.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it reorders pending_items accounting in the bundler and changes on_resolve from a silent return to a process abort, and because the description ties landing order to other open PRs, a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- The two
?sites now above the count inenqueue_entry_item/enqueue_file_from_dev_server_incremental_graph_invalidationboth bottom out in allocation failures (dupe_alloc_fix_pretty,MultiArrayList::append), sohandle_oomin theon_resolveclosure labels the error correctly; the only reader ofpending_itemsisis_doneon the event-loop tick, so nothing observes the count between the old and new positions on the success path. - All seven other
increment_scan_counter()call sites inbundle_v2.rsalready have no exit before their.schedule(/.dispatch(, so the lint holds on HEAD; the realpath andgit ls-treefilters mirrorbss-singleton-uniqueandbyte-search. - The symlinked-checkout and "wrong crash reason" concerns were ruled out (same filter as peer lints; error type is alloc-only). I was not able to execute the test in this session, so the "fails on base" claim rests on reading the base-commit order, where
?follows the count in both functions.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs in three places and adds one source-lint test. In enqueue_file_from_dev_server_incremental_graph_invalidation and enqueue_entry_item, self.increment_scan_counter() moves from immediately after path resolution to just before enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(task), i.e. after path_with_pretty_initialized(..)? and graph.input_files.append(..)?. In the on_resolve entry-point callback, let Ok(source_index) = ... else { return; } becomes bun_core::handle_oom(...). The new lint in test/internal/source-lints/ scans tracked .rs files under src/bundler/ and rejects any ?/return/break/continue between a count and its hand-off.
Security risks
None specific to this change. The fallible steps are allocation-only; the new handle_oom converts an allocation failure into the codebase's standard controlled abort rather than a silent graph inconsistency (the path map and graph.ast already hold entries for a file with no input_files row at that point). No user input parsing, auth, or crypto is involved. The lint spawns git ls-tree on the repo root, which peer lints already do.
Level of scrutiny
Medium. The diff is small, but pending_items is the bundler's in-flight work counter, and an off-by-one in either direction means either a hang in wait_for_parse or a premature is_done. I verified: (1) the only reader of pending_items == 0 is is_done, invoked from the event-loop tick, so no synchronous code between the old and new count positions observes the counter; (2) ParseTask::init / arena_create do not touch the counter; (3) the remaining seven call sites (3451, 3771, 3869, 3933, 5059, 5874, 5926) all hand off with no exit in between, so the lint should pass on HEAD; (4) scan_module_graph_from_cli does wait on the error exit of enqueue_entry_points_normal, which is the hang the PR fixes. The on_resolve change is a policy choice (abort vs. build without an entry point) that is justified by the inconsistent-graph state but is user-visible for long-lived Bun.build() processes; a maintainer should confirm that is the intended trade-off, and the description's landing-order claims relative to sibling PRs cannot be verified from this checkout.
Other factors
I could not run the test in this session (command execution was denied), so the "fails on base, passes on HEAD" property is confirmed only by reading both versions of the two functions. Neither changed file is covered by CODEOWNERS. The bug-hunting run exited on dry_streak with no findings, and the five candidate issues it raised were ruled out for reasons consistent with my own reading. The timeline shows a single commit and no third-party reviews, so there are no outstanding objections, but no human has looked at it yet either.

The lint took the first `schedule` or `dispatch` call after
`increment_scan_counter()` as the hand-off, also when that call sat in a
branch. `count; if ready { schedule(task) }` passed, and the path that skips
the branch never pays the unit back.
The hand-off now has to be at the level of the count. The one block it may
sit in is the `if !…enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(…) {` of an onLoad check
that is itself on every path. An `unsafe` block does not count as a branch.
The scan uses `search` and `match` in place of `RegExp.exec`.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether bun_core::handle_oom in on_resolve could relabel a non-OOM failure: the only ? sites left in enqueue_entry_item (path_with_pretty_initialized, input_files.append) bottom out in allocator failures, matching the neighbouring .expect("oom") calls, so no user-reachable error is turned into an OOM abort. The remaining increment_scan_counter() and raw pending_items += sites in bundle_v2.rs already sit directly before their hand-off.
Extended reasoning...
Findings-present run; the two inline nits cover the lint's recognizer edges. Separately ruled out the handle_oom-over-full-Error-enum concern by reading enqueue_entry_item (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:2812-2898): the two ? returns are path_with_pretty_initialized (FilenameStore append) and MultiArrayList::append, both allocator-only failures, and the function already uses .expect("oom") for the sibling dupe_alloc/put calls. Also scanned every other count site (L3451, L3771, L3869, L3933, L5059, L5874, L5926 and the raw pending_items += at L3145, L4613, L4828) — each is immediately followed by its schedule/dispatch with no fallible step between. Not approving: a verified finding is being withheld from the posted set, a prior bot review and a CodeRabbit inline comment are on the thread, and the change touches the bundler's cross-thread work accounting where a human look is still warranted.
… own block
The onLoad exception applied after any earlier
`enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(…)` call. `count; self.enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(task);
if ready { schedule(task) }` passed, although the `ready` branch can skip the
hand-off.
The exception now needs the exact form: the hand-off sits directly in the
body of `if !<receiver>.enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(…) {`, and that check
is at the level of the count. The call's parentheses are matched, so an
`unsafe { &mut *task }` argument does not confuse the block search.

I reviewed the latest push and found no bugs in the bundler change; the new onLoad-branch handling in the lint addresses the skippable-hand-off shape raised earlier. A human look is still worthwhile because the PR adds a new regex-based source lint to CI over src/bundler/** and the description ties its landing order to four other open PRs.
What was reviewed:
- The two
increment_scan_counter()moves insrc/bundler/bundle_v2.rs: nothing between the old and new positions readspending_items, and the only?sites in between (path_with_pretty_initialized,input_files.append) bottom out in allocation failures (dupe_alloc_fix_pretty/MultiArrayList::append). - The
on_resolvehandle_oomchange:_dec_guard(decrement_scan_counter_on_drop) still pays back the resolve unit on every exit, so the abort path stays balanced and the entry point can no longer be silently dropped. - The seven other
increment_scan_counter()sites already sit after their last fallible step and directly before.schedule(/.dispatch(, so no sibling was missed.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches two files. In src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs it moves self.increment_scan_counter() in enqueue_file_from_dev_server_incremental_graph_invalidation and enqueue_entry_item from before the fallible path_with_pretty_initialized(..)? / input_files.append(..)? steps to directly before the enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed / pool().schedule(task) hand-off, and replaces the silent let Ok(..) = .. else { return; } in the JSBundler on_resolve NoMatch/EntryPointBuild path with bun_core::handle_oom(..). The second file is a new ~260-line source lint under test/internal/source-lints/ that scans tracked src/bundler/**/*.rs for every .increment_scan_counter() call and rejects an early exit or a skippable hand-off after it, with fixture self-tests.
Security risks
None identified. The change is internal counter bookkeeping in the bundler; the only new behavior on a user-reachable path is that an allocation failure during entry-point enqueue under an onResolve plugin now aborts through handle_oom instead of leaving Bun.build() unsettled. The lint runs only on the source tree in CI.
Level of scrutiny
The Rust hunks warrant careful but bounded scrutiny, and they check out: I confirmed via grep that no code between the old and new counter positions reads graph.pending_items; that the two ? sites return only allocation errors (generic_path_with_pretty_initialized -> dupe_alloc_fix_pretty -> FilenameStore, and MultiArrayList::append), so handle_oom is the right channel; that on_resolve holds a decrement_scan_counter_on_drop guard so the abort/return paths stay balanced; and that the seven sibling increment_scan_counter() sites (3451, 3771, 3869, 3933, 5059, 5874, 5926) already follow the count-then-hand-off order with no ?/return in between. The lint is heuristic regex parsing of Rust; the latest commit added onLoadCheckBody so a hand-off is accepted only directly inside if !….enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(..) {, which closes the skippable-branch shape flagged in the prior run. Two earlier optional nits on the lint (exits inside or immediately after the hand-off call, and the block-comment-before-line-comment blanking order) are unchanged; they remain open as inline threads and are not restated here.
Other factors
I could not execute the test file in this environment, so the claim that the lint passes on HEAD and fails on the base was verified by tracing the scan by hand over the two changed functions rather than by running it. The PR is bot-authored, adds a new CI-enforced lint that maintainers will own, and the description explicitly coordinates landing order with #39855, #40438, #37731 and #41041 (including a stated remaining use-after-free that this PR does not fix). Those are maintainer-level decisions about process and CI surface rather than correctness defects, which is why a human look is still recommended even though no bugs were found.
Still open from earlier reviews (2):
- Unresolved: 2 minor or pre-existing.
…icks the hand-off on every path Three gaps in the lint, from review: - The exit scan stopped at the start of the hand-off call. A `?` in the call's arguments or on its result (`.schedule(task)?;`) passed. The scan now runs to the end of the hand-off statement. - `blank()` ran one pass per token kind, so a `/*` inside a `//` comment opened a block comment and could blank a count up to the next `*/`. It is now one left-to-right alternation: the token that starts first wins. - A `schedule` or `dispatch` call in an unrelated branch before the real hand-off failed the lint. The lint now takes the first hand-off that runs on every path, and reports a skippable hand-off only when there is no such call.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I re-reviewed the latest revision (through 8b61b46) and found no bugs; the lint gaps raised on the earlier pushes are now handled, and the only thing left is a judgment call on the lint itself that a maintainer should make.
What was reviewed:
- The two reorders in
src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs: nothing between the old and newincrement_scan_counter()positions readspending_items, andenqueue_on_load_plugin_if_neededstill runs after the count, matchingenqueue_parse_task/enqueue_parse_task2. - The
handle_oomwrap inon_resolve: both?sites inenqueue_entry_itembottom out indupe_alloc_fix_pretty/MultiArrayList::append, so the error is allocation-only, consistent with the.expect("oom")calls a few lines above in the same function. - The lint now scans through the end of the hand-off statement, blanks all literal/comment kinds in one alternation, and rejects a hand-off in a skippable branch, each with a fixture; traced the seven other
increment_scan_counter()sites by hand and each is accepted for the right reason. - Whether a ~290-line regex-based source lint is the shape the bundler maintainers want for this invariant (vs. a helper that couples the count to the schedule call) is the open design question.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR moves self.increment_scan_counter() in enqueue_file_from_dev_server_incremental_graph_invalidation and enqueue_entry_item (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs) from before two fallible ? steps to just before the onLoad-check/schedule hand-off, and replaces a silent let Ok(..) else { return; } in the onResolve NoMatch entry-point branch with bun_core::handle_oom(..). It adds test/internal/source-lints/bundler-scan-counter-handoff.test.ts, a source-tree lint that scans tracked src/bundler/**/*.rs for an early exit between a count and its hand-off, plus fixtures exercising the scanner's accept/reject shapes.
Security risks
None identified. The Rust change only reorders a counter increment on the bundler thread and converts a swallowed allocation error into a controlled OOM abort; it does not touch input parsing, paths from untrusted data, or any authorization surface. The lint runs git ls-tree on the repo checkout and reads source files; it never executes the bun binary.
Level of scrutiny
The runtime change deserves a close read because it alters counter balance in a wait loop, and it holds up: pending_items is read only in wait_for_parse-style checks and in on_complete diff handling, not by ParseTask::init, arena_create, or anything else between the two positions, so success paths are unchanged, and the new position mirrors the sibling enqueue_parse_task sites. The handle_oom wrap maps the crate Error to an OOM abort; I checked that both ? sites in enqueue_entry_item (path_with_pretty_initialized via generic_path_with_pretty_initialized, both branches ending in dupe_alloc_fix_pretty, and input_files.append) are allocation-only, so the abort is not reachable from user input. Being unable to execute commands in this session, I traced each of the seven untouched increment_scan_counter() call sites by hand through the lint's rules (block-level .schedule*(/.dispatch*(, or directly inside if !….enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(…) {, including the unsafe { &mut *task } argument variant and the worker_pool().schedule(Batch::from(unsafe {..})) variant) and each is accepted without a false positive.
Other factors
The three nits I raised on earlier pushes (exit scanning only up to the start of the hand-off call, sequential comment-blanking passes that let /* inside a // comment swallow code, and a hand-off in a skippable branch after an onLoad check) are all addressed in commits bca36a6 and 8b61b46, each with a corresponding fixture in the third test. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files. A coderabbit inline comment at line 134 posted before the final commit has no resolution metadata; I cannot see its content, and the later commit plausibly addressed it. I am deferring rather than approving because introducing a bespoke heuristic lint in test/internal/source-lints/ for this ordering invariant is a design choice about how the bundler team wants to enforce it (a lint versus a helper that couples the count to the schedule call, as the PR notes another open PR restructures), and that call belongs to a maintainer.

The lint takes the firstscheduleordispatchcall that runs on every path, and reports a skippable hand-off only when there is no such call./*inside a//comment opens nothing.bundle_v2.rsof bundler: insert a completeWorkerinto the pool map and check the pool pointer in release builds #39855, bundler: remove unsafe from bundle_v2, ParseTask, LinkerContext and the bundler thread pool #40438, bundler: keep the scan counter balanced when an onLoad plugin does not await defer() #37731 and bundler: abort on allocation failure when enqueuing a plugin-resolved entry point #41041 it reports the same two functions and nothing else.Self-review
Three independent reviews of the diff: should it exist in this shape, is the reorder correct, can the lint be broken. Addressed:
on_resolvecaller would go from a hang to a build without the entry point: it now aborts throughhandle_oom.schedulecall.?: it also rejectsreturn,breakandcontinue..schedule(and.dispatch(), which bundler: remove unsafe from bundle_v2, ParseTask, LinkerContext and the bundler thread pool #40438 renames: it acceptsschedule*anddispatch*.fnitem: it is bounded by the enclosing block.blank()ignored char literals and raw strings: it blanks them. From the reviews on this PR, all in the lint:
count; if ready { schedule(task) }). It now requires the hand-off on every path. The scan also usessearchandmatchin place ofRegExp.exec, which a static analysis tool reported aschild_process.exec.enqueue_on_load_plugin_if_needed(…)call. It now needs the exactif !… {form, and the hand-off directly in that body.blank()ran one pass per token kind, and an unrelated nesteddispatchbefore the real hand-off failed the lint. All three are fixed, each with a fixture.Rejected for this PR: a helper that takes the count together with the hand-off, so that the order holds by construction. #40438 already adds the infallible helper
schedule_or_enqueue_on_loadfor the five parse-task sites. When it lands, the count can move into that helper as its first statement, and the lint becomes optional. The same refactor here would only conflict with #40438.The reviews also confirmed: no exit other than the two
?s lies between the old and new positions, no callee there touches the count or ticks a loop, and no caller compensates onErr.Suites (debug ASAN build of the final revision)

The host was under heavy load (load average about 450), so three--compilecases needed about 16 s each and passed only with a longer per-test timeout.bun-build-api: 66 pass with the same longer timeout. The one failure is the 400-build stress case, which has its own 180 s limit. This branch runs its graph at 572 ms per build and main at 598 ms, so both need about 230 s here.[human-review] gate passed · iteration 0 · 2 files touched
