MergeReactiveScopesThatInvalidateTogether searched and pruned the whole declaration list of the merge candidate for every scope it merged. That is quadratic in the number of scopes that merge into one. The candidate now keeps its declarations in a hash map with a min-heap on the last usage, and pass 3 stores them in the scope in insertion order. The compiled output does not change.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings (all on the timing test), I also checked the CandidateDeclarations bookkeeping in src/react_compiler/reactive_scopes/merge_reactive_scopes_that_invalidate_together.rs for two things and ruled both out: a stale env.scopes[..].declarations being read between a merge and the pass-3 write-back (nothing reads the current scope's list after the candidate is created — can_merge_scopes uses the candidate, extend only reads the next scope, and nested blocks finish their own pass 3 before the parent block merges), and the declaration_ids count underflowing on a stale heap entry (each heap entry corresponds to exactly one vacant insert, and a key can only become vacant again by being popped, so pops and increments stay paired).
Extended reasoning...
The three posted findings are all about the new debug-only timing test (CI coverage, wall-clock flakiness under load, and the 60 s timeout), so the review body records what was examined in the Rust change itself. I diffed the old in-place retain/linear-search path against the new hash map + min-heap + count structure: pruning pops entries with last_usage < range_end, which is the same predicate the old retain used, and untracked declarations are kept in both. Insertion order is preserved through the position counter and the final sort, and an existing key updated via extend keeps its original position, matching TS Map.set. The len() short-circuit before are_equal_dependencies mirrors that function's own length check. I did not find a correctness issue in the pass; the remaining question for a human is only whether the test shape (debug-only, timing-based) is acceptable, which the inline comments already raise.

MergeReactiveScopesThatInvalidateTogethertakes time quadratic in the number of consecutive reactive scopes that it merges into one. Debug build: 197 ms for 500 static siblings, 2812 ms for 2000.merge_scopes_in_block(src/react_compiler/reactive_scopes/merge_reactive_scopes_that_invalidate_together.rs:273) searched that list and ranretainover it.can_merge_scopescopied it and scanned it per dependency.Fix
CandidateDeclarations: a hash map with the insertion position, a min-heap on the last usage, and a count per declaration id. Pass 3 writes them back to the scope in insertion order.retainremoved. The output is byte-identical. After: 38 ms and 141 ms. A release build of 4000 element pairs takes 22% less CPU time.test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts. The timing test fails without the fix on a debug build. Also that file andreact-compiler-fixtures.test.ts.Background

Inputs.
static N:<div title={props.t}>with N children<b id="i0" />. No child has a dependency, so all N scopes merge into one, and every child stays a declaration because the<div>reads it.pairs N:<div>with N children<i><b id={props.x} /></i>. Each<b>depends onprops.xand each<i>on its<b>, so all 2N scopes merge. Each<b>is pruned when its<i>merges, and each<i>stays declared.pairsreaches all three changed paths: the key lookup, the prune, and the third check ofcan_merge_scopes.Time of the pass, debug build, best of 5, in ms.
BUN_REACT_COMPILER_TIMING=1prints the wall time of each pass at exit, in debug and ASAN builds only. The host was under load, so compare the growth: about 3.6 times per doubling before, 2 times after. For
pairs 1000the pass was 29% of the time of all passes before and 4% after.Whole build, release build, user CPU time of
bun build --react-compiler, best of 7, in ms. Other passes are also quadratic on these inputs (RenameVariables onstatic, for example), so the whole build stays superlinear. The release binary grows by 3 KB of text. The final sort uses
bun_collections::index_sort, so it adds no new instance of the std sort. Why the output is the same.
Map.setkeeps the position of a key that exists and appends a new key.updateScopeDeclarationsdeletes every entry whose last usage is before the range end. The map, the position counter and the heap do the same. A declaration is keyed by its own identifier everywhere in the crate (debug_assert_eq!inextend), so a new value for a key has the same last usage. Checks:react-compiler-fixtures.test.ts: 3293 upstream fixtures, byte for byte.can_merge_scopesand after every merge, that the result and the ordered declarations are equal: the fixtures (1254 merges), the inputs above, and 3200 generated components (67000 merges, up to 500 live declarations, all three checks ofcan_merge_scopes)..jsxand.tsxfiles undertest/,bench/,docs/andpackages/.Tests.
bun-build-api.test.tshas a test for debug and ASAN builds with an explicit timeout too.t0tot63of 64 declarations of one merged scope, half of them with a pruned declaration in between. It fails wheninto_declarationsdoes not sort. No fixture merges more than 8 declarations into one scope.Review. Two read-only passes looked at the diff before the push. One tried to find an input where the new structure differs from the old list (8 points, none found). One checked the tests and the conventions. A full adversarial design review did not run to completion for this PR. The 7 concerns:
calls, scopesandexitCode, and shows stderr when the report line is missing.throw: false, so a failed build shows its errors.hash_map::Entryis written with its full path, asinfer_mutation_aliasing_effects.rsdoes.crate::collectionshas anEntryof its own.Not in upstream:comments mark the two deviations from the upstream file. Not changed.
are_equal_dependenciescompares two dependency lists in quadratic time, as upstream does. That is quadratic in the dependencies of one scope, not in the number of merged scopes. Pass 3 still clones the statements that it moves, as upstream does.
