Problem

  • On Linux, a SIGPWR that JSC did not send crashes Bun: panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0x60 in WTF::Thread::signalHandlerSuspendResume (Source/WTF/wtf/posix/ThreadingPOSIX.cpp:140). process.kill(pid, 30), subprocess.kill("SIGPWR"), raise(SIGPWR) and kill -PWR <pid> from a shell all reach it. Container managers send SIGPWR to PID 1 on stop (LXC's default halt signal). Fixes Segfault when a Bun process receives SIGPWR on Linux (process.kill(pid, 30), kill -PWR <pid>) #43186.
  • The handler treats every delivery as a request from Thread::suspend() or Thread::resume(). It dereferences targetThread, which only those two set. A delivery that lands while a thread is suspended also ends sigsuspend() early. resume() then returns before its own signal arrives, and the thread stays in sigsuspend() forever.

Fix

  • The fix is in WebKit: [WTF] The thread suspend signal handler acts only on requests from suspend() and resume() WebKit#693. suspend() and resume() publish the request kind and the target pthread_t before pthread_kill. The handler acts only on a request for its own thread. Every other delivery returns.
  • This PR pins WEBKIT_VERSION to the preview build of that PR (autobuild-preview-pr-693-8fb74355) so CI can run. When [WTF] The thread suspend signal handler acts only on requests from suspend() and resume() WebKit#693 merges, the pin moves to the merged sha before this PR merges.
  • It adds suspendThreadAndSignalForTesting to bun:internal-for-testing (Linux only). A helper thread suspends the JS thread with WTF::Thread::suspend, sends SIGPWR during the suspension, and reports whether the JS thread ran before the resume. That makes the hang deterministic.
  • Verified: test/js/node/process/process-sigpwr.test.ts (8 tests). On the current WebKit pin 5 segfault and 2 hang. With the preview all 8 pass. Also cpu-prof.test.ts, open-in-editor-gc.test.ts, process-on.test.ts, process-signal-listener-count.test.ts, worker.test.ts.

Background

  • JSC's GC and the sampling profiler stop a thread while they read its stack. Thread::suspend() sends a signal with pthread_kill, the handler waits in sigsuspend(), and Thread::resume() sends the signal again. sigsuspend() returns as soon as any handler returns.
  • Bun's WebKit fork uses SIGPWR for that signal on Linux, and SIGUSR1 elsewhere. That is why src/jsc/bindings/c-bindings.cpp excludes SIGPWR from the signals process.on can install.
  • A Bun-side fix cannot work. It has to tell JSC's own pthread_kill from other senders by siginfo, and the kernel delivers both as SI_USER from pid 0 once RLIMIT_SIGPENDING is exhausted. process: guard JSC's GC suspend signal against unsolicited SIGPWR on Linux #33777 tried that and hangs in the first GC under ulimit -i 0. One test here sets RLIMIT_SIGPENDING to 0 and runs the GC.
  • A SIGPWR from outside is still dropped after this change. process.on("SIGPWR") stays inert, as it is today. So an operator who stops Bun with SIGPWR (LXC's default halt signal) now waits for the kill timeout, where before the process died by SIGSEGV. The default action or a JS listener needs a callback out of the WTF handler, which is a separate change.
Notes

Repro.

process.kill(process.pid, 30); // or: kill -PWR <pid> from a shell
setTimeout(() => console.log("survived"), 150);

Canary 1.4.3-canary.1+b52d51348: exit 139, 3 of 3. With this build: survived, exit 0.

The tests. Four crash cases (process.kill, a parent's process.kill, subprocess.kill("SIGPWR"), raise() through bun:ffi). Two GC cases under BUN_JSC_collectContinuously=1: the main thread sends SIGPWR to the process while the collector suspends it, and the GC with RLIMIT_SIGPENDING at 0. Two suspension cases through the hook: kill(2) to the process and pthread_kill() to the suspended thread, two rounds each, and the JS thread must not run during the 30 ms hold. The hook and the tests come from branch robobun/387ebfac/sigpwr-wtf.

The preview build. The first preview of oven-sh/WebKit#693 was based on WebKit c2815689 and did not have JSC::Exception::asyncContext (oven-sh/WebKit#689), so src/jsc/bindings/ModuleGraph.cpp did not compile against it. I updated the PR branch with WebKit main. Later previews add an errno save in the handler and a static_assert that the request atomics are lock-free. Neither changes what the tests see.

Slow suites. error-gc-test.test.js and two heap-snapshot.test.ts cases timed out at 5 s on my machine (load average 90 on 16 cores). Their time goes to Bun.inspect and String.prototype.repeat in the debug ASAN build, not to the GC: 50 full collections take 0.6 s on the same build.

…SC did not send no longer crashes the process

On Linux, JSC suspends and resumes threads with SIGPWR. The signal handler
assumed every delivery came from Thread::suspend() or Thread::resume() and
dereferenced a null target thread when anyone else sent the signal.
oven-sh/WebKit#693 makes the handler act only on a request that suspend()
or resume() published.

Adds tests that send SIGPWR from the process itself, from the parent, and
in a flood while the GC runs.

I opened oven-sh/WebKit#693 and had started on the same bump, so I stop here and leave the Bun side to this PR. Two things that may help:

  • Branch robobun/387ebfac/sigpwr-wtf (one commit, no WebKit pin) adds a bun:internal-for-testing hook, suspendThreadAndSignalForTesting, and 8 tests. The hook suspends the calling thread with WTF::Thread::suspend, sends SIGPWR during the suspension with kill(2) or pthread_kill(), and reports whether the thread ran before the resume. That makes the second failure (the thread stuck in sigsuspend()) deterministic: on the stock WebKit those two tests hang, and 5 others segfault. The branch also covers raise(SIGPWR) through bun:ffi and GC with RLIMIT_SIGPENDING at 0. Take from it what is useful.
  • [WTF] The thread suspend signal handler acts only on requests from suspend() and resume() WebKit#693 has two more commits since 2c4b76b1: the handler restores errno (e6bcfb95, preview autobuild-preview-pr-693-e6bcfb95 is published) and static_asserts that the two atomics are lock-free (8fb74355, preview still building). Neither changes the behaviour these tests see.

Adds suspendThreadAndSignalForTesting to bun:internal-for-testing. It
suspends the calling thread the way the GC does, sends a signal during the
suspension (kill(2) or pthread_kill()), and reports whether the thread ran
before the resume.

The tests need the WTF change in oven-sh/WebKit#693. With the current
WEBKIT_VERSION 7 of the 8 fail: 5 segfault in
WTF::Thread::signalHandlerSuspendResume and 2 hang in sigsuspend().

I worked on the same crash from a separate report and did not see this PR until now. I will not open a second PR. My branch is robobun/537a2426/sigpwr-guard (one commit, 7ab7d52).

Summary of that branch: it wraps WTF's handler in BunProcess.cpp and passes a delivery to WTF only when si_code == SI_TKILL && si_pid == getpid().

That rule is not safe, so this PR is right to read no siginfo. I reproduced the failure that the Background here describes. On my branch it is worse than a hang, because the wrapper applies the default action to a delivery that it takes for a foreign one:

$ cat gcloop.js
for (let i = 0; i < 5; i++) { Bun.gc(true); await new Promise(r => setImmediate(r)); }
console.log("done");
$ (ulimit -i 0; BUN_JSC_collectContinuously=1 bun-debug gcloop.js)    # my branch
Power failure # exit 158, killed by JSC's own pthread_kill
$ (ulimit -i 0; BUN_JSC_collectContinuously=1 bun gcloop.js)           # canary b52d51348
done

A kill(2) from an ancestor PID namespace (the lxc stop case) arrives as SI_USER with si_pid == 0. A delivery that lost its siginfo looks the same. No siginfo rule can separate the two.

The branch still has parts for the follow-up that the Background here names (a callback out of the WTF handler for the deliveries that JSC did not send):

  • A reason to want it: signal-exit registers a SIGPWR listener on Linux. On delivery it removes its listeners and calls process.kill(process.pid, "SIGPWR"), and it expects the default action to end the process. Today the name "SIGPWR" throws ERR_UNKNOWN_SIGNAL in process.kill.
  • "SIGPWR" in the three signal name tables of BunProcess.cpp.
  • onDidChangeListeners sets an atomic flag for JSC's signal and never changes its sigaction. The handler reads the flag: with a listener it calls Bun__onPosixSignal, with no listener it restores SIG_DFL and raises the signal, as Node does (exit 158).
  • Pid 1 is the exception to the default action. The kernel drops a signal whose disposition is SIG_DFL for pid 1 (SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE). So the raise does nothing there, SIG_DFL stays installed, and JSC's next pthread_kill is dropped too. Node as pid 1 ignores the signal, and the handler has to do the same.
  • Tests in test/js/node/process/process-signal-listener-count.test.ts: a listener runs for kill(2) by number and by name, for subprocess.kill("SIGPWR"), and for a tgkill(2) from another process. No listener, process.off, and a once listener that sends the signal again (the signal-exit pattern) all end with signal SIGPWR. One case reads sigaction(SIGPWR) through bun:ffi before process.on, after it, and after process.off, and expects no change.

A note on the follow-up that the Background names ("The default action or a JS listener needs a callback out of the WTF handler"). I looked into that follow-up and I do not open a PR for it. The findings are below for whoever takes it up later.

A callback at the early return of signalHandlerSuspendResume is not safe on oven-sh/WebKit#693 as it stands. That branch also sees JSC's own resume signal, with no foreign sender.

  • The suspended invocation checks for the resume request before it calls sigsuspend(): while (request != Resume) sigsuspend(...).
  • resume() can publish the request before the thread reaches that check. Then the thread does not park. It clears the request and returns.
  • The pthread_kill from resume() arrives after that, with no published request. bun tsconfig #693 returns there, so this is harmless for this PR.
  • A callback on that branch takes the delivery for a foreign signal. With no listener it applies the default action and ends a healthy process with "Power failure". With signal-exit loaded the result is the same, because it registers a SIGPWR listener on Linux and sends the signal again.

Numbers:

  • A standalone model of the bun tsconfig #693 protocol (one target thread, no foreign sender, 16 cores) gives about 1,400 to 5,300 deliveries with no published request in 200,000 suspend and resume rounds (five runs).
  • The same model with a loop that parks at least once (do { sigsuspend(...); } while (request != Resume);) gives 0 in 200,000. The resume signal is then always consumed inside sigsuspend().
  • A debug build linked against the bun tsconfig #693 preview, with a counting wrapper around the handler that reads the same request state, shows it in a real process. An idle script with no sender gets 2 to 3 such deliveries out of about 58 in 4 seconds. A Bun.gc(true) loop gets 5 to 6 out of about 72. All of them were on threads other than the main thread.

So the listener and the default action are not a small hook on top of #693. They need that change to the wait loop in WebKit first. Nobody has asked for a SIGPWR listener so far, and LXC's own init (lxc-init) turns SIGPWR into SIGTERM for the application. The "dropped" contract of this PR is a reasonable interim state.

What remains is the name. process.kill(pid, "SIGPWR") throws ERR_UNKNOWN_SIGNAL because "SIGPWR" is missing from the tables in BunProcess.cpp. The entry is only safe after this PR lands. On current main it turns the catchable error into the segfault of #43186 for a self-send. I checked that on a debug build with only the three table entries. #43500 rewrites those tables and leaves SIGPWR out for that reason. The entry is a follow-up for after both have landed.

With the name in the tables, JSC_SIGNAL_FOR_GC=<another signal> gives Node's behaviour for SIGPWR as an opt-in. On the same names-only build with JSC_SIGNAL_FOR_GC=23, the listener runs with ("SIGPWR", 30), and without a listener the process exits with 158.

Update, 2026-09-26. oven-sh/WebKit#693 merged, and main pins a WebKit that contains it since #43616. I checked canary 1.4.3-canary.1+37da174d5: a SIGPWR from process.kill(process.pid, 30) (5 of 5 runs) and from kill -PWR <pid> is dropped, and the process continues. A process.on("SIGPWR") listener does not run there.

#43500 now adds the "SIGPWR" name to the tables and keeps that contract. So the name needs no separate follow-up. The paragraph above about the name describes the state of 2026-09-19.

The listener and the default action stay as described: not planned, and not safe as a callback while the wait loop checks before it parks. The WebKit that main pins has that loop.

The model

Build with cc -O2 -pthread proto.c -o proto. Run ./proto 200000 for the loop of #693 and ./proto 200000 dowhile for the loop that parks at least once.
