Stop keeping resolver file descriptors in watch mode - #42714
Conversation
--watch and --hot set the resolver's store_fd, so it kept open every directory it read and every symlinked package file it resolved, for the life of the process. Most of those paths are under node_modules. Nothing in the runtime uses them: the watcher opens a directory by path when no descriptor was stored, and the file descriptors it adopts come from the transpiler, not the resolver. On macOS each one was a kqueue-visible fd, and a monorepo with the isolated linker reached tens of thousands. Fixes #42702

LGTM — both earlier points are now addressed (the per-fd readlink tolerates ENOENT, and the dead store_fd plumbing through InitOptions/Options/WebWorker/jsc_hooks is removed).
What was reviewed:
- Confirmed the remaining
resolver.store_fdwriters (bunxstore_root_fdat run_command.rs:616/3521, install/lib.rs:810) are outside the runtime-VM path and stay live, so the field itself is not orphaned. - Test awaits the child's readiness line via the file's existing
stdoutWaiter(no sleep), covers--watch/--hot/test --watch× plain and isolated-linker symlinked deps, and guards against a vacuous pass withheld.length > 0. openPathsnow skips fds that vanish betweenreaddirandreadlink, so churn from the now-close-immediately resolver fds can't fail the test spuriously.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The behavioral change is two deleted lines: run_command.rs and test_command.rs no longer set resolver.store_fd = true for --watch/--hot/test --watch. Everything else is mechanical fallout: with no runtime writer left, the store_fd field on InitOptions, Options, and WebWorker (and its threading through jsc_hooks::init_runtime_state and the worker/standalone VM init paths) always carried false, so those nine sites are deleted. A parametrized test in test/cli/watch/watch.test.ts spawns each watch mode against a temp dir with both a plain node_modules/dep and an isolated-linker-style symlinked node_modules/dep2, waits for a readiness line, then lists the child's open paths and asserts none live under node_modules.
Security risks
None. This removes fd retention from the resolver in watch mode; no auth, crypto, permission, or untrusted-input parsing is touched. The test reads /proc/<pid>/fd or shells out to lsof on the local child only.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. The correctness question is whether watch/hot reload ever depended on the stored fds. The PR's argument — the watcher rejects node_modules paths outright, Watcher::append_directory_assume_capacity opens by path when the stored fd is invalid, and the file fds the watcher adopts come from the transpiler's own open — is consistent with the resolver still defaulting store_fd to false for plain bun run, which already exercises the same fallback. The bunx/install store_fd writers remain, so the resolver field itself is not dead. The plumbing removal is a pure dead-code delete once the two writers are gone.
Other factors
Both inline points from the earlier review round are addressed in commit 4d2b40a: openPaths now flatMaps with a try/catch so a concurrently-closed fd is skipped rather than throwing, and the orphaned store_fd fields/assignments are deleted. The new test follows the file's local conventions (stdoutWaiter, watchee module-level with afterEach kill, tempDir from harness), skips narrowly on Windows and on macOS-without-lsof, and asserts held.length > 0 so a broken listing can't produce a vacuous pass. The PR description reports the existing watch/hot suites pass. No third-party CHANGES_REQUESTED is outstanding, and the bug hunt ran to dry_streak with no findings.
Problem
bun --watchandbun --hothold an open file descriptor for every directory the resolver reads and for every symlinked package file it resolves, for the life of the process. Almost all of them are undernode_modules, which the watcher never registers. A monorepo with the isolated linker reaches about 16k of them (bun --watchwatches node_modules despite docs saying it doesn't (isolated linker) #42702,bun --watchholds duplicate fds per symlink path with the isolated linker (follow-up to #39783) #42701), and on macOS each one counts againstkern.maxfiles.resolver.store_fd, whichrun_command.rs:976andtest_command.rs:1928turned on for hot reload. With it set,read_directory,dir_info_cached_missandEntry::kindkeep the fds they open instead of closing them.Fix
store_fdfor hot reload. Nothing in the runtime uses the stored fds: everyadd_filecall passesdir_fd: INVALID, andWatcher::append_directory_assume_capacity(src/watcher/Watcher.rs:604) opens a directory by path when no fd was stored. The file fds the watcher adopts come from the transpiler's own open, not the resolver.bun run.store_root_fd(bunx, install) is untouched. TheInitOptions, workerOptionsandWebWorkerfields that carriedstore_fdto a VM only ever heldfalseafter this, so they are removed too.store_fdper path inside the resolver. This removes the whole class (ancestor directories, out-of-root directories, symlink targets) and adds no resolver policy. store_fdis a resolver flag. When set, the directory walk and the symlink stat keep the fd they opened in theDirEntryorEntryCache, so a later consumer can reuse it instead of opening the path again.Resolver::watcher.watch(dir, fd). It refuses any path that containsnode_modulesand opens by path whenfdis invalid, so the stored fd was only ever a small saving for directories inside the project.lsofand in the process fd limit, which is why the reports come from macOS.Notes
