…ient bun install loads the project's .env* files for bunfig $VAR expansion. GitEnv cloned that merged map into the environment of every git child, and the HTTP client read its proxy and TLS settings from it. A cloned repository that ships a .env with GIT_SSH_COMMAND, GIT_EXEC_PATH or a GIT_CONFIG_* entry therefore ran a command during `bun install --ignore-scripts`, and one with HTTPS_PROXY or NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED=0 rerouted or weakened the downloads. The manager now keeps a second loader, process_env, that holds only the environment the process started with. GitEnv, http_proxy(), tls_reject_unauthorized() and the two has_http_proxy() checks read it. bunfig expansion, registry settings and lifecycle scripts still read the merged loader.

After the first failed download or git command, print one note that names the proxy, TLS or GIT_* variables that only the project's .env* files set. An install that succeeds prints nothing. The proxy test now installs a registry dependency with a token in the user's ~/.npmrc, and checks that the proxy from .env sees neither the requests nor the token. Two install guides state the rule.

It names the command that ran. bun info, bun pm view, bun pm diff and bun audit send their requests with the same proxy and TLS settings as bun install. They now print the note when the request fails to send.

Beyond the inline findings, two other candidates were checked and ruled out: the GitEnv::get signature change from &mut Loader to &Loader is behavior-preserving (init only ever cloned the map, never wrote back to the loader), and the new note in throttle_after_network_error cannot fire on an install that never saw a failed download — it is gated on download_failed, so it can appear before a retry that later succeeds, but only after a real failure that the .env-only proxy or TLS setting could explain.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a second, process-only dotenv loader to PackageManager and reroutes proxy, TLS and git-child environment reads to it, touching credential routing and child-process environment (security-sensitive). Four verified findings are posted inline and the hunt stopped at its bug cap, so approval is not on the table; this body only records what else was examined.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.
…d read the TLS switch in audit The process-only loader is for the package manager that loads .env* itself (bun install and its family). The runtime's auto-install loads no .env*: it keeps the loader the runtime hands it, as before, so that auto-install and fetch() in one process take the same proxy. bun audit now sets reject_unauthorized from tls_reject_unauthorized(), as bun info and bun pm diff do, so the note names only variables that the command reads. The once-flag of the note uses SeqCst. The new tests use the default timeout.

src/install/git_runner.rs— Users whose project.envheld git credentials for a private https dependency now get "git clone ... failed" with a repository-not-found error and no note naming the dropped variable.on_command_exitat git_runner.rs:780 skipsreport_failurewhenevernot_foundmatches, so theProcessOnlyEnv::Gitnote at git_runner.rs:890 is never reached on that path. Fix: emit the.env-only note on every terminal git failure, including thenot_foundbranch at git_runner.rs:807-816 (for example fromfail()), so the diagnostic the PR relies on holds for every failed clone. GitHub and GitLab answer an unauthenticated clone of a private repository withremote: Repository not found.style text, which is exactly what thenot_foundmatch at git_runner.rs:774-779 catches. Why this was flagged
A repository ships
.envwithGIT_CONFIG_COUNT=1,GIT_CONFIG_KEY_0=http.https://github.com/.extraheaderandGIT_CONFIG_VALUE_0=AUTHORIZATION: basic <token>and agit+https://github.com/org/private.gitdependency;bun install --ignore-scriptsis run with none of those in the real environment. On the base branch GitEnv::init cloned the merged loader, so git sent the header and the clone succeeded. After this change GitEnv::init (src/install/repository.rs:163-165) clonestooling_env, git clones without the header, and GitHub repliesremote: Repository not found.. Inon_command_exit(src/install/git_runner.rs:769-782) that stderr setsnot_found, soreport_failureis not called andnote_dotenv_only_vars(ProcessOnlyEnv::Git)at src/install/git_runner.rs:890 never runs; the task fails at :807-816 withError::RepositoryNotFound. The user gets a repository-not-found error and nothing saysGIT_CONFIG_COUNT/GIT_CONFIG_KEY_0/GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_0were not read from.env.Verification: Triggers when a project's
.envcarries the git auth for a private https dependency and the host answers the unauthenticated clone with "remote: Repository not found.".not_foundat git_runner.rs:774-779 matches that stderr, and line 780 skipsreport_failure, the only place the git note is emitted (line 890). On the base branch the clone succeeded; after the diff the user sees only a repository-not-found failure with no note.
…d, and name SSH_ variables A host answers a clone of a private repository without credentials with "not found". The install prints no git output on that path, so the note did not appear either. It now follows every failed git command. The note also names the SSH_* variables that only .env has. The two guides say that the git of an install sees no variable of those files.

🟡 (optional) Users whose install succeeds can still get the new note: bun install reads GIT_SSH_COMMAND ... from the environment only line, which the PR says never happens. git_runner.rs:784 prints it for every failed git command, including the https attempt that precedes the ssh retry for a git+ssh:// dependency (urls are popped https first, git_runner.rs:451-497). runTasks.rs:1990 likewise prints the network note on a transient download failure that the retry then recovers. Fix: print the note only when the failure is terminal, i.e. in the branches that call Self::fail/log_error after the URL forms are exhausted, and for network errors only when the task is not re-queued for retry; this covers both sites.
Why this was flagged
A project .env sets any GIT_* or SSH_* variable and package.json has a private git+ssh:// dependency. spawn_clone pops the https form first (src/install/git_runner.rs:451-454 push ssh then https, :496 pops). Without credentials git fails on https with a non-"not found" error, so on_command_exit enters if !ok at src/install/git_runner.rs:780 and calls note_dotenv_only_vars(ProcessOnlyEnv::Git) at :784 before the Step::Clone arm at :800 retries the ssh form, which succeeds. The user sees the note on an install that exits 0; the base branch prints only the pre-existing git stderr for the first attempt. The same happens at src/install/PackageManager/runTasks.rs:1990: throttle_after_network_error runs on the first download_failed even when retry re-queues the task and it then succeeds, so a project with HTTP_PROXY in .env and one connection reset sees the network note on a successful install. Nothing gates the note on the failure being final.
Verification: nit. A project .env* sets a GIT_*/SSH_* name the process env lacks, and a git+ssh:// dependency's https form fails with a non-"not found" error. The block at src/install/git_runner.rs:780-785 runs note_dotenv_only_vars(ProcessOnlyEnv::Git) for every !ok exit, before the Step::Clone arm at :796-809 retries the ssh URL. The ssh fallback succeeds, the install exits 0, yet the note is printed.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: Pre-existing (memory safety): a script that writes a proxy variable to process.env while an auto-install request is pending can make the HTTP thread dial a freed buffer. http_proxy() at src/install/PackageManager.rs:902 detaches the loader reference to 'static, but on the runtime path tooling_env() is the VM loader, whose map value Bun__setEnvValue replaces and frees (src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs:2051, :2071). Fix: make the install's requests own their proxy bytes, as fetch() does with url_proxy_buffer, so the URL stored in NetworkTask.rs:666 and :887 never borrows the env map, and state that invariant in the SAFETY comment instead of "process_env is never written after init()", which does not cover the env() fallback.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
A bun app.ts run without node_modules imports a package that auto-install must fetch; the resolver enters init_with_runtime_once, which sets process_env to None (src/install/PackageManager.rs:2584), so tooling_env() (:893-895) returns env(), the VM's transpiler loader. http_proxy() (:897-903) laundered that reference to 'static and returns a URL<'static> whose hostname slice points into the HashTableValue Box of the HTTPS_PROXY entry (src/dotenv/env_loader.rs:325-331). NetworkTask::for_manifest and for_tarball store it in the AsyncHTTP (src/install/NetworkTask.rs:666, :887); the HTTP thread dials url.hostname from it (src/http/HTTPThread.rs:506). Auto-install is asynchronous in the runtime, so JS can run process.env.HTTPS_PROXY = other meanwhile; Bun__setEnvValue puts a new Box or removes the entry (src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs:2051, :2071), freeing the bytes the pending request still points at. The base branch had the same borrow through env_mut(); the diff rewrites the function and adds a SAFETY comment whose stated invariant covers only process_env, not this fallback.
Verification: pre-existing (memory safety; the base reaches the same freed bytes by the same route). JS writes a proxy variable to process.env while an auto-install request is in flight. Bun__setEnvValue (src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs:2047-2071) writes vm.transpiler.env_mut().map, freeing the Box<[u8]> the HTTP thread's client.http_proxy borrows. The SAFETY comment does not cover the runtime path.

Repro (git and bun only, the command runs before any network connection):
With this branch
RAN.txtdoes not exist.GIT_SSH_COMMAND=... bun install(a real environment variable) still runs the user's command. The dotenv loader never overrides a variable of the real environment, so the hole needs a variable that the user did not set.The note, printed at most once for requests and once for git, with names only. It names the command that ran:
It lists the variables that the project's
.env*files set and the process environment does not:HTTP_PROXY,HTTPS_PROXY,ALL_PROXY,NO_PROXY(either case) andNODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZEDafter a request that failed to send, everyGIT_*andSSH_*variable after a failed git command. That includes a clone that the host answers with "repository not found", where the install prints no git output. The two guides state the general rule: thegitof an install sees no variable of the.env*files. Every caller ofhttp_proxy()prints it: the install's network tasks (install,add,update,outdated),pm_view_command.rs(bun info, bun pm view),pm_diff_command.rsandaudit_command.rs.bun auditdid not setreject_unauthorizedon its request, so it ignoredNODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZEDfrom every source. It now readstls_reject_unauthorized(), asbun infoandbun pm diffdo, so the note names only variables that the command reads. An install that succeeds prints nothing, so a project that keepsHTTP_PROXYin.envfor its application sees no new output. The known user of the old behavior is #24035 (HTTP_PROXY/HTTPS_PROXYin the project's.envforbun install). The new tests, each with the variable under test removed from the real environment of the install:
