WalkthroughCross-chunk name assignment no longer reserves entry export aliases globally. Clause application creates entry-specific aliases for collisions, removes duplicate bindings, skips unsupported entries, and propagates allocation errors. 768-805: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAdd an unminified entry-chunk export-name regression case.
assign_unminifiedinsrc/bundler/linker_context/crossChunkNames.rs:87-137changes a cross-chunk binding fromfootofoo2when its emitting entry chunk exports the namefoo. The current fixture does not trigger this condition in unminified mode. Itsfoobinding has no matchingfooalias, andhelperbelongs to the unrelated shared chunk. Removing only this unminified check would leave the fixture passing. Add a focused case that asserts the affected binding has the suffixed runtime name while the unrelated shared binding remainshelper. The nearbyCrossChunkNameMatchesEntryExportNametest covers the opposite cross-chunk isolation case.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

With --splitting, a binding shared across chunks was numbered
(ValidationError -> ValidationError2) whenever any entry point exported
something under the same name. Function#name and constructor.name then
differed from the unbundled code.
Export names are not bindings. The namers no longer reserve them, so a
cross-chunk binding always keeps its name. The one place where the two
kinds of name can meet is the export clause of an entry chunk that also
exports bindings to other chunks. A collision there is settled in the
alias: the chunk prints `export { helper as helper2 }` and importers
print `import { helper2 as helper }`. When the entry point exports that
same binding under that name, the extra item is dropped and importers use
the entry point's export.

--splitting, a cross-chunk binding is declared in one chunk and used in another. bundler: one bundle-wide name per cross-chunk binding (no moreexport {x as y}/import {y as z}between chunks) #40518 gives each one name for the whole bundle.x as ywhen they differ, as before bundler: one bundle-wide name per cross-chunk binding (no moreexport {x as y}/import {y as z}between chunks) #40518.export {}clause: the entry point's export names, then the chunk's cross-chunk bindings. Two equal names there are a SyntaxError.pin_entry_chunk(mergeSmallChunks.rs:996). The layout bug of Bun build does not import values re-exported from another package whensideEffectsisfalse#18008 still produces one.Notes
Repro (1.4.3-canary.1+09bb54630 and main 04823d8):
Before, the shared chunk has
class ValidationError2 extends Error {}andout/index.jshasexport { ValidationError2 as ValidationError }. After, all three files printValidationErrorand no clause has anas. The alias path.
export_aliases_beside_entry_exportsruns once, inapply_to_clauses. It looks only at an ESM entry chunk whose entry point has exports and which has a cross-chunk export clause. For that chunk it puts the entry point's export names in a hash set, adds each cross-chunk name, and collects the ones that hit. A hit getsname2,name3, ... until the alias is free in that clause. The result is a map from binding to alias. It is empty in every build that has no such chunk.apply_to_clauseswritesitem.aliasfrom that map first and fromcross_chunk_namesotherwise, for export items and import items alike.Same binding.
entry_export_bindingresolves the entry point's export the waygenerate_entry_point_tail_jsdoes. When it is the binding of the colliding item (compared throughsymbols.follow), the item is removed from the cross-chunk clause. The clause then has oneexport { exports_d }, and the importer printsimport { exports_d } from "./a.js". On main the same input givesexport { exports_d2 as exports_d, exports_d2 }, so the module namespace of the entry point has a second key.splitting/CrossChunkImportUsesEntryExportOfSameBindingchecksObject.keysof the entry point for both--minify-identifierssettings.How the tests build a chunk that has both kinds of name.
import { foo } from "./d.js", whered.jsis in a"sideEffects": falsepackage and doesexport * from "./c.cjs", readsfoooff the exports object ofd.js. The importing part gets no dependency on that object, becausescanImportsAndExports.rs:1286tests the importer'sexport_kindwhere esbuild tests the imported module's. With a second entry point that reachesd.js,d.jslands in that entry point's chunk, and the first entry point importsexports_dfrom it. That is #18008, and this PR does not change it. When #18008 is fixed the two layout assertions insplitting/CrossChunkBindingKeepsNameBesideEntryExportName(exports_d as exports_d2,exports_d2 as exports_d) need a new fixture. The other assertions do not depend on the layout.Earlier versions of this PR. Version 1 removed the reservation and asserted that such a chunk cannot exist. A self-review disproved that with the layout above. Versions 2 and 3 made the binding avoid the export names, first bundle-wide and then per chunk. Both still renamed a binding because of an export list. The current version follows the review by @Jarred-Sumner: the binding name and the export name are in different namespaces, and only the alias changes.
--minify-identifiers. Short names are no longer skipped for export names.splitting/CrossChunkNameMatchesEntryExportNameMinifiedexports all 54 one-letter names from an entry point. Before, the two shared functions getssandas. After, they getsanda, andindex.jsprintsexport { s as $, a as A, ... }.Not changed.
reserved_namesalso reserves every unbound name of every module scope of the bundle. A sharedclass Eventis stillEvent2when some other chunk reads the globalEvent. That is a different reservation with a different reason.Random graphs. 300 random module graphs (3 to 9 modules, names from a pool of 9, entry points with exports, re-exports under other names,
import(),--min-chunk-size,--minify-identifiers,--target=bun, and up to two"sideEffects": falsebarrels of the kind above whose exports object some entry points export underexports_dNand under one-letter names). Each entry point must load, have every export it declares, and each export must have the value of its source module. Main and this branch fail the same 4 seeds withTypeError: __commonJS is not a function, and 66 seeds hitReferenceError: exports_dN is not definedon both. Both are #18008. No seed fails on this branch only. The alias path ran for 17 clause items. Numbered declarations in the unminified outputs: 1,452 on main, 615 on this branch. The rest are real collisions between cross-chunk bindings. Also checked by hand.
