Fixes #42301

Problem

  • A net.Socket built with the onread option keeps the bytes that a false return (or pause()) left undelivered. destroy() does not drop them. When the same socket connects again, resume() or read() hands the bytes of the old connection to the callback before the bytes of the new connection. Node delivers only the bytes of the new connection.
  • The cause: bun's native read can be larger than the onread buffer. kOnreadDeliver (src/js/node/net.ts) stores the rest in self[kOnreadTail]. Only the constructor and drainOnreadTailNT reset it. _destroy() and connect() do not. kOnreadPendingEnd, the end deferred behind that tail, has the same lifetime.

Fix

  • Add dropOnreadTail(). It clears kOnreadTail and kOnreadPendingEnd. _destroy() calls it, and connect() calls it at its entry, so every connect path is covered (TCP, pipe, and connect({ socket })).
  • This matches node, where the undelivered bytes stay in the kernel buffer of the fd and go away with the connection. A live reconnect replaces the native socket, so its bytes go away too.
  • The pause state is not touched. A socket that the user paused before connect() stays paused.
  • Verified: test/js/node/net/node-net.test.ts (two new tests: a destroyed socket that connects again, and a peer reset that lands on the declined tail) and test/js/node/net/socket-reconnect-live.test.ts (a live reconnect). All fail on the released bun and pass with this change. Also ran handle-leak.test.ts, double-connect.test.ts, tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts and the node test-net-connect-* parallel tests for socket reuse.

Background

  • The onread option of net.Socket delivers data into a user buffer through a callback instead of 'data' events. A false return from the callback stops reads until resume() or read().
  • Node bounds each kernel read to the size of the onread buffer. Bun reads a larger chunk natively and slices it in JS. The slice that the callback has not taken yet is the "tail" held in kOnreadTail.
  • drainOnreadTailNT delivers the tail on the next tick after resume() or read(). It already returns early when the socket is destroyed, so the tail survived destroy() and was delivered after the next connect().
  • A native close that arrives while a tail is undelivered (for example a peer reset) parks the 'end' in kOnreadPendingEnd until the tail drains. Without the reset, that parked end fired on the next connection after its first tail drain.

Downsides

  • None found. Checked connect() (one property read on a socket without onread, two writes with it), _destroy(), the drain tick, and the re-entrant case where the callback itself calls connect(): node also delivers the rest of the old read there, and bun still does.
Notes

Repro from the issue on main (6b394bf):

[[1,"AAAA"],[2,"BBBB"],[2,"CCCC"],[2,"xxxx"],[2,"yyyy"]]

With this change:

[[1,"AAAA"],[2,"xxxx"],[2,"yyyy"]]

kOnreadDraining is left alone. A drain tick that is already queued resets it and finds no tail, so it returns without a delivery. kOnreadReadRequested is not reset either: the drain tick clears it before anything reads it.

A rejected connect() (bad port) drops the tail before the throw. Node has the same outcome: it sets connecting = true before it validates the port, so resume() restarts nothing after the throw and the kernel bytes are never delivered. Probed on node v26.3.0 and bun: both deliver only the first slice.

The tests compare the bytes of the second connection as one string, so they do not depend on read boundaries.

node-net.test.ts has 11 tests that fail in this container both with and without this change (ECONNREFUSED on a shared server, and unref should exit when no more work pending). They are not related to this change.

no test proof · iteration 1 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/node/net/node-net.test.ts

A net.Socket built with the onread option keeps the bytes a false
return left undelivered in kOnreadTail. destroy() and connect() did not
clear it, so a socket that connected again handed the bytes of the old
connection to the callback before the bytes of the new one.

Clear kOnreadTail, kOnreadPendingEnd and kOnreadReadRequested in
_destroy() and at the start of connect(). Node keeps those bytes in the
kernel, so they go away with the fd.

Walkthrough

Socket.connect() and Socket._destroy() clear buffered onread state. Regression tests check that reconnect does not deliver data from the prior connection or emit its deferred end.

On the re-entrant case (connect() called from inside the onread callback): I checked it against node v26.3.0 with the same server and a callback that calls connect() on the first slice.

  • node: [[1,"AAAA"],[2,"BBBB"],[2,"CCCC"]], then the socket closes (the live connect fails with EISCONN).
  • bun with this PR: [[1,"AAAA"],[2,"BBBB"],[2,"CCCC"],[2,"xxxx"],[2,"yyyy"]].

Node still hands the rest of the old read to the callback after connect() was called, so a connecting guard in deliver() would drop bytes that node delivers. The remaining difference is that bun completes a live reconnect where node fails with EISCONN. That is the existing behavior covered by socket-reconnect-live.test.ts and is out of scope here. I am leaving deliver() as it is.

Note from #42313: that PR adds the same dropOnreadTail helper and calls it in connect(), because its derived bytesRead would otherwise subtract a stale tail from a fresh handle. It does not add the _destroy call or the replay test, so this PR still has work to land. Whichever lands second rebases to a no-op on the shared connect() line.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/js/node/net.ts — pre-existing: a TLS socket with onread that is re-pointed at a new transport via connect({ socket }) still replays the old transport's declined tail into the new one. The wrap branch at src/js/node/net.ts:2193-2311 replaces this._handle (lines 2227, 2248, 2281, 2298) and returns before the new dropOnreadTail(this) call at line 2337, so kOnreadTail and kOnreadPendingEnd survive the handle swap. Fix: drop the stale onread state on every path that discards the previous handle, e.g. call dropOnreadTail(this) once near the top of connect() (after the cb/parent early-returns) or inside the shared handle-replacement step, which covers this branch and the two sites this PR already patches.

    Why this was flagged

A TLSSocket built with an onread option whose callback returned false holds the undelivered remainder in self[kOnreadTail] (src/js/node/net.ts:1954). The user then calls tlsSocket.connect({ socket: otherNetSocket }) without destroying first; Socket.prototype.connect enters the if (connection) branch at src/js/node/net.ts:2193, installs a new native/TLS handle at 2227, 2248, 2281 or 2298 and returns at 2310. dropOnreadTail at src/js/node/net.ts:2337 is never reached on this path. On the next resume()/read(), drainOnreadTail (src/js/node/net.ts:2526) sees the old tail and drainOnreadTailNT (2536) delivers the previous transport's bytes to the callback before the new transport's bytes. This is the same symptom the PR fixes for the destroy() and plain live-connect paths, so it is pre-existing; base behaves identically here. The guard in dropOnreadTail (self[kOnreadBuffer] === undefined) does not help because the TLSSocket forwards onread to the Socket constructor (src/js/node/tls.ts:782) and kOnreadBuffer is set.

Verification: pre-existing — the base branch already replays the tail on this path. Trigger: a TLSSocket built with an onread option whose callback returned false, then re-pointed at a new transport via connect({ socket: otherSocket }) without destroying first. The new dropOnreadTail(this) call sits at src/js/node/net.ts:2337, after return this; at 2310, so kOnreadTail survives the handle swap.

Comment thread src/js/node/net.ts Outdated
…ferred end

Move dropOnreadTail() to the entry of Socket.prototype.connect so the
wrapped-transport branch (connect({ socket })) drops the tail too.
Remove the kOnreadReadRequested reset: the drain tick clears that flag
before anything reads it.

Add a test where a peer reset lands while the tail is undelivered. The
deferred end it leaves must not end the next connection. Compare the
bytes of the second connection as one string so the tests do not depend
on read boundaries.

Pushed 8165fee. The drop now runs at the entry of connect(), which covers the connect({ socket }) branch as well. The kOnreadReadRequested reset is gone (the drain tick clears it first). A new test covers the deferred end: a peer reset while the tail is undelivered must not end the next connection. The tests compare the bytes of the second connection as one string, so read boundaries do not matter. The PR body now starts with the Fixes line for #42301.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/js/node/net.ts — pre-existing: a caller that reconnects a non-destroyed socket whose previous connection already ended natively gets a second connection that never emits 'end' and swallows a peer reset. connect() only runs initSocketHandle when _handle is null (src/js/node/net.ts:2341), so a live reconnect keeps kclosed/kended from the old connection; finishSocketEnd returns early on kended (net.ts:816) and the close handler returns early on kclosed (net.ts:1553). Fix: on connect(), treat a handle whose native socket already closed or ended (kclosed or kended set) like the destroyed case: drop it and go through initSocketHandle so per-connection flags reset, which also covers the onread deferred-end state this PR drops. This is the test-2 scenario without the destroy() call.

    Why this was flagged

An onread socket declines a slice, the peer resets, and the client has no 'error' listener: SocketHandlers.close at src/js/node/net.ts:1553-1554 sets kclosed = true and net.ts:1584 parks the end via deferEndForOnreadTail, so no 'end' or 'close' is emitted and the socket is not destroyed. The same state arises for any allowHalfOpen socket after the peer's FIN (kended = true at net.ts:817, no autoDestroy). If the user then calls socket.connect() without destroy(), dropOnreadTail at net.ts:2097 clears the tail and pending end, but _handle is still non-null so the if (!this._handle) block at net.ts:2341-2344 skips initSocketHandle, which is the only place that resets kclosed/kended (net.ts:4502-4503). On the second connection, a peer FIN reaches finishSocketEnd which returns at net.ts:816 because kended is still true, so 'end' never fires; a peer RST reaches the close handler which returns at net.ts:1553 because kclosed is still true, so no 'error', 'end' or 'close' fires. The base branch behaves the same on this path (pre-existing).

Verification: pre-existing — the base branch fails by the same route (the live-reconnect path never ran initSocketHandle before this PR either). In src/js/node/net.ts, connect() resets the flags only via initSocketHandle, which is gated on a missing handle (line 2341). SocketHandlers2.close at 1553-1554 if (self[kclosed]) return; precedes the error-listener check at 1563, so a peer RST on the new connection is swallowed.

❌ @robobun, your commit 8728b92 has 1 failures in Build #122509 (All Failures):

🧪   To try this PR locally:

bunx bun-pr 42305

That installs a local version of the PR into your bun-42305 executable, so you can run:

bun-42305 --bun

Poll the native handle until the peer reset detaches it instead of a
fixed number of event loop turns. A stale deferred end fires from the
drain tick itself, so no wait is needed before the write.

On the stale kclosed/kended flags after a live reconnect of a socket whose native connection already closed: that path is not specific to onread. Any socket whose peer ended or reset, and that then calls connect() without destroy(), keeps those flags because initSocketHandle only runs when _handle is null. It needs its own change (reset the per-connection flags on every connect), with tests for the plain and the allowHalfOpen cases. This PR stays on the onread tail and its deferred end.

8728b92 replaces the fixed waits in the new test with conditions.

On the two flags the issue lists that this PR does not reset: kOnreadDraining is cleared by the drain tick it guards, and a tick queued before destroy() or connect() finds no tail and returns. kOnreadReadRequested is set only together with that tick, which clears it before anything reads it. Resetting either here would be a no-op. The Notes section of the PR body says the same.
