Node's socketOnClose calls session.close() before it destroys the session, so a client session whose socket closed reports closed === true as well as destroyed === true. Bun only set the latch in close(), so session.closed stayed false after a peer hung up. Mark the session closed in the client session's socket 'close' handler, unless the session is already detached: a bare destroy() on a live transport keeps closed false, like node. The server session already does this through close().

Reproduction, h2c over a plain TCP peer that hangs up after its SETTINGS frame: const http2 = require("node:http2"), net = require("node:net");
const SETTINGS = Buffer.from([0, 0, 0, 4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0]);
const srv = net.createServer(c => {
c.on("error", () => {});
c.on("data", () => {});
c.write(SETTINGS);
c.once("data", () => c.end());
});
srv.listen(0, () => {
const ses = http2.connect("http://127.0.0.1:" + srv.address().port);
ses.on("error", () => {});
ses.on("close", () => {
console.log(JSON.stringify({ closed: ses.closed, destroyed: ses.destroyed }));
srv.close();
});
});

LGTM — one-line Node-compat alignment with tests covering both the positive and negative contracts.
What was reviewed:
- Verified the
!this.destroyedguard maps to Node'ssocketOnCloseearly-return:destroyedreadsthis[bunHTTP2Socket] === null, which is set bydestroy()before the socket's late'close'lands, so a baredestroy()correctly leavesclosedfalse (third test). - Confirmed the server path already calls
this.close()in its own#onClose(line 4328), so only the client side needed changing; the new server test is regression coverage. - Tests await the
'close'/'remoteSettings'events directly, uselisten(0), assert a combined{closed, destroyed}object, and the raw-peer helper drains inbound data so the hang-up is a FIN not an RST.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR changes one line of logic in src/js/node/http2.ts (ClientHttp2Session.#onClose, the socket 'close' handler): before the existing this.destroy(...), it now sets the private #closeCalled latch when the session has not already been detached. This makes session.closed report true after the peer hangs up, matching Node's socketOnClose which calls session.close() before destroying. The #closeCalled field's doc comment is updated, and a 6-line comment cites the upstream Node source and explains why the latch is set directly rather than calling close() (no transport for the GOAWAY, and close()'s deferred teardown would trip destroy()'s early-out on a not-yet-connected session). Three new describe.concurrent tests in test/js/node/http2/node-http2.test.js cover client peer-FIN, server peer-FIN, and client destroy() on a live transport.
Security risks
None. This is a state-flag alignment in the node:http2 compat layer with no auth/crypto/permission implications. No untrusted input parsing is added; the raw HTTP/2 preface bytes in the tests are fixture constants sent to a local in-process server.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-moderate. The behavioral change is a single guarded field write on a well-understood teardown path, and the guard (!this.destroyed) reuses the exact same predicate the neighboring #onError already uses at line 5427 to implement Node's detached-session early-return. I confirmed the server-side #onClose at line 4328 already calls this.close(), so the "fix the whole class" concern is satisfied — the server test is added coverage for existing behavior, not a test that passes for a different reason. The destroyed getter reads this[bunHTTP2Socket] === null, which #onClose nulls only after the new guard, so first-entry ordering is correct.
Other factors
The tests follow the harness conventions well: listen(0, "127.0.0.1"), event-driven awaits with no sleeps, combined-object .toEqual assertions, describe.concurrent for independent server-spawning cases, and try/finally cleanup registered before the assertions. The on('error', () => {}) handlers are teardown-noise swallowers on sockets whose 'close' event is the awaited condition (which fires regardless), matching the pattern used elsewhere in this test file. The new comment is longer than the "one line" ideal but it documents a non-obvious Node-compat invariant with an upstream citation, which REVIEW.md explicitly encourages for ported behavior. Bug hunt exited on dry_streak with no findings and no prior reviewer objections in the timeline.

node:http2client session reportsclosed === falseafter its transport goes away. Node reportstrue(destroyedistruein both). An h2c peer that sends SETTINGS and hangs up gives{"closed":false,"destroyed":true}on bun 1.4.3-canary.1 and{"closed":true,"destroyed":true}on node v26.3.0.session.closedreads the#closeCalledlatch (src/js/node/http2.ts:5472), and onlyclose()set it. Node'ssocketOnClosecallssession.close()before it destroys the session.ClientHttp2Session.#onClose(src/js/node/http2.ts:5403) only destroyed.Fix
'close'handler, before the existing destroy. Skip it when the session is already detached: a baredestroy()on a live transport and a transport error keepclosedfalse, as node'ssocketOnClosedoes once the socket no longer points at a session.close(): the GOAWAY has no transport left, the deferred teardown is redundant next to the destroy, andclose()would trip adestroy()early-out for a socket that dies before connect and drop the session'close'event.test/js/node/http2/node-http2.test.js(four new tests, the client hang-up one fails on stock bun). Also the 261 vendoredtest-http2-*.jssuites, the rest oftest/js/node/http2/,fetch-http2-clientand the grpc-js session tests.Background
Http2Session#close()is the graceful shutdown: send GOAWAY, let in-flight streams finish, then destroy.destroy()is the immediate teardown. Node reports them throughsession.closedandsession.destroyed, independently.socketOnCloseis node's handler for the session socket's'close'event (lib/internal/http2/core.js, v26.3.0). It cancels the streams, callssession.close(), then destroys the session. Bun's equivalent is the private#onCloseon each session class.ServerHttp2Session.#onClosealready callsthis.close(), so only the client side changed. A new test covers the server path too.Notes: session state after each teardown, node v26.3.0 vs bun
{closed, destroyed}read from the session's'close'event. The peer is a raw TCP socket that speaks the h2 preface.A client socket that dies before the session connects also reported
closed: falseand now reportstrue, which is what node reports for that case.The detached-session guard is what keeps the
destroy()rows atfalse: the socket's own'close'arrives afterdestroy()has already detached the session, and without the guard that late event would flipclosedtotrue. The third new test asserts it by waiting for the socket's'close'before it reads the session state.test-http2-forget-closed-streams.jstakes about 70s under the debug+ASAN build, before and after the change.Scope. This PR only aligns the
closedgetter. The client#onClosestill differs from node'ssocketOnClosein two ways that this diff does not touch:ERR_SOCKET_CLOSEDon the session.#onClosederives it fromthis.connecting, which reads the socket, and bun'snet.Socketalready reportsconnecting === falseby the time its'close'fires. Node still reportstruethere.session.close()while connecting, followed by a socket that closes without an'error'event, never emits the session'close'event (stock bun and this branch alike, node emits it).#onClosedetaches the parser before it callsdestroy(), and the clientdestroy()returns early on#closed && !#connected && !#parser. That early-out carries its own history (node:http/https/http2: raise Node v26.3.0 compat to ~94%, sync the upstream suites, and fix the Windows/macOS transport-layer teardown bugs they exposed #32488), so removing it belongs in a separate change with its own CI signal.Interaction with #42175. That PR stops the client
#onErrorfrom detaching the socket beforedestroy().destroy()itself still detaches it, so the!this.destroyedguard keepsclosedfalse on the transport-error path either way.
