…macOS clonefile(2) returns EEXIST when the destination exists. The forced clone path called it directly, so copyFile with COPYFILE_FICLONE_FORCE failed on an existing file while COPYFILE_FICLONE overwrote it. Remove the destination first unless COPYFILE_EXCL is set, the same way the unforced path does. Fixes #42061

… clone Try clonefile(2) before the unlink so that an error on the source leaves the destination intact. Refuse with EINVAL when src and dest are the same inode, because the unlink would delete the source. Both forced clone call sites now share one helper.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Both earlier concerns are now handled in clonefile_force: the clone is attempted before dest is touched, and the st_dev/st_ino guard returns EINVAL for same-file (including the symlink case) before any unlink. The new tests exercise all three entry points and the same-file/symlink paths.
Extended reasoning...
Confirmed the two issues raised in the prior review are addressed by the new clonefile_force helper at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:416-452: the initial clonefile runs before any destructive step, and the same-inode comparison (following stat, which resolves symlinks) short-circuits to EINVAL before unlink. The added test covers sync/callback/promises, EXCL, missing-source, and same-file via both direct path and symlink. The remaining inline finding is separate from what was previously raised.

A failed clonefile (EXDEV, ENOTSUP, a missing source) no longer removes the existing destination. The rename replaces it atomically. The same file as source and destination keeps its content, so the inode guard is no longer needed.

I reviewed the temp-then-rename redesign and it closes the data-loss cases from the earlier iterations: dest is never unlinked, so cross-volume/ENOTSUP clones and same-inode copies leave the file intact, and the temp clone is removed on rename failure. Since the author had no macOS machine and the test continues on ENOTSUP/EXDEV, a human should confirm the macOS CI lane actually exercised the assertions rather than skipping.

Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR fixes fs.copyFile(src, dest, COPYFILE_FICLONE_FORCE) on macOS, which previously threw EEXIST when dest existed because clonefile(2) refuses an existing destination. The final design adds clonefile_force() in src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs: without COPYFILE_EXCL, it clones src to a randomly-suffixed sibling of dest and then rename(2)s over dest; with COPYFILE_EXCL, it calls clonefile directly. Both macOS force-clone call sites (copy_file_inner and copy_single_file_sync) are rewired to the helper. A macOS-gated test in test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts exercises all three API forms.
Security risks
None identified. The temp path is derived from the caller-supplied dest plus a .hex-counter.tmp suffix, so it stays in the same directory and volume; no untrusted length is used for allocation (the pooled PathBuffer is fixed-size and the code returns ENAMETOOLONG when the concatenation would overflow). No privilege, network, or auth surface is touched.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate-to-high. This is native filesystem code on a data-integrity path, and the PR's own history shows two earlier iterations that would have deleted the user's file (unlink-before-clone, then unlink-on-EEXIST-before-EXDEV-check). The current temp-then-rename design is the standard atomic-overwrite pattern and I traced each of the three prior failure modes through it: same-inode copies clone the file to tmp then rename the clone back over itself (content preserved); EXDEV/ENOTSUP/ENOENT fail at the clonefile step before dest is touched; and because dest is never unlinked, XNU's EEXIST-before-EXDEV ordering is no longer relevant. The pooled path buffer is a PoolGuard released on drop, and ZStr::from_buf is called with the NUL correctly placed at tmp_buf[tmp_len] after a tmp_len >= tmp_buf.len() guard.
Other factors
The author states they have no macOS machine and verified only via cargo check --target aarch64-apple-darwin plus CI. The test treats ENOTSUP/EXDEV on the first forced copy as a skip (continue), so on a runner whose temp volume lacks clone support the loop runs zero assertions. GitHub-hosted macOS runners use APFS for the temp volume so this should exercise, but a human confirming the macOS lane actually hit the assertions (rather than three silent continues) is the remaining gap before merge. All prior review threads on this PR were author-self-resolved; the one non-author-resolved thread (coderabbit on the test) had a follow-up commit.
|
On the remaining point from the review: the test tolerated ENOTSUP and EXDEV on every run, so a runner without clone support would have passed with no assertion. df8b1de keeps that tolerance for local runs only. On CI (the macOS runners use APFS) the test now fails if the forced clone does not succeed, so a green macOS lane means the assertions ran. |

The clone-to-temp-then-rename approach in clonefile_force resolves the concerns from earlier rounds — cross-volume, non-APFS, missing-source, and same-file cases now all leave dest intact because clonefile runs against a fresh sibling path before anything touches dest, and the kernel's EEXIST-before-EXDEV ordering is no longer in play. I didn't find further issues; since the author has no macOS box and this is entirely #[cfg(target_os = "macos")]-gated, the remaining gate is a green macOS CI lane on the new test.
What was reviewed
- Traced every exit from
clonefile_force: clone failure returns beforedestis touched; rename failure unlinks the temp; success renames it away — no path leaves a temp file. - Checked temp-path construction:
dest+tmpnamesuffix stays indest's directory (same volume), the length check reserves the NUL byte, and overflow returnsENAMETOOLONGrather than panicking. - Confirmed both force-clone call sites (
copy_file_innerandcopy_single_file_sync) route through the shared helper, and the test covers sync/callback/promises with EXCL, ENOENT, self-copy, symlink-self-copy, and temp-file-leftover assertions.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR fixes fs.copyFile / copyFileSync with COPYFILE_FICLONE_FORCE on macOS so an existing destination is overwritten (matching the semantics of every other copyFile mode without COPYFILE_EXCL). The base branch called clonefile(2) directly on dest, which fails EEXIST when the target exists. The fix adds a #[cfg(target_os = "macos")] helper clonefile_force in src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs that clones src to a randomly-suffixed sibling of dest, then rename(2)s over dest. Both macOS force-clone call sites now delegate to it. A macOS-gated test in test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts exercises sync/callback/promises variants and covers overwrite, EXCL, missing source, self-copy (direct and via symlink), and temp-file cleanup, tolerating ENOTSUP/EXDEV only outside CI.
Security risks
None identified. Paths are caller-supplied (same trust boundary as every other fs.copyFile argument); the temp name is derived from FileSystem::tmpname (hash ^ nanotime + counter) and lives in the same directory as dest, so no new traversal or cross-volume surface. The path buffer comes from bun_paths::path_buffer_pool, the length is bounds-checked before the copy, and overflow returns ENAMETOOLONG instead of panicking or writing past the buffer.
Level of scrutiny
Elevated. This PR went through eight commits and five prior review rounds because earlier attempts (unlink-then-clone, clone-then-unlink-on-EEXIST) each had a data-loss window — deleting dest before learning that the clone would fail for EXDEV/ENOTSUP, or deleting dest when src and dest were the same inode. The current temp+rename design closes all of those: the only mutation to dest is an atomic rename that runs after a successful clone. I re-traced each earlier objection against the final code and each is addressed. The author states they have no macOS machine and verified only via cargo check --target aarch64-apple-darwin, so runtime behavior is unverified outside CI.
Other factors
All prior inline threads were resolved by the PR author (self-resolution), but the code itself now demonstrably addresses each one, so I'm treating them as closed on the merits rather than on the resolution metadata. No CODEOWNERS entry covers these files. The test is comprehensive for the variant matrix and asserts specific error codes, not bare toThrow(). Deferring rather than approving because the entire change is macOS-only, the author could not run it, and a human should confirm the macOS CI lane actually exercised the new test (the !isCI escape hatch means a misconfigured runner would silently skip the assertions).

clonefile(2)is the macOS syscall that creates a copy-on-write clone of a file on APFS.
