bundler: print path-matched file externals relative to the output file - #42034
bun build ./e.mjs --external "$PWD/lib.js" --outdir out/b copies each importer's specifier: import L2 from "../lib.js" next to import L from "./lib.js". Neither resolves from out/b/ (ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND).
The resolver matches by absolute path. resolve_import_records kept the importer-relative text.
A ./ or ../ specifier matched by path keeps that path (PRINT_PATH_RELATIVE_TO_OUTPUT). The JS printer writes it relative to the chunk's output directory (Chunk::output_dir_abs).
A specifier written like the external stays as written, and a relative wildcard also matches by path. The bundle does both (options::ExternalFiles). The resolver is unchanged.
Verified: 17 tests fail before (Notes). Self-reviewed: the last review asks for a maintainer decision (Downsides).
Background
external entries are package names, wildcards, or file paths. The resolver matches a file path after it joins the importer's directory.
The runtime and macro imports use that resolver and load what it returns, so the two new matches are in the bundle only.
Downsides
Breaking, and why this is a draft: a build that ships the external file beside the output. --external ./src/config.js with import "./config.js" printed ./config.js and now prints ../src/config.js. A published package builds this way. Notes lists three options to choose from.
The wildcard-by-path match covers relative specifiers only: --external './node_modules/*' makes a package half external.
.text grows 9,472 bytes. No cost per resolve or per VM start (Notes).
Notes
The open decision: what a relative external that matched by path prints. Release builds of main (9b8347a) and of this head. "In place" means the output runs where it was built, next to the sources. "Ships beside" means the deployed tree is the output directory plus the external file. The file is copied to where the source tree has it. The last column is this head with the output directory equal to the source root. A base of root_dir prints the same. Every build exits 0 with an empty stderr.

1. #25144: entry point index.ts and --outfile at the project root, src/services/x.ts imports ../../config, --external ./config
../../config.js. In place: runs. Ships beside: fails
../../config.js. As main
../config.js. In place: fails. Ships beside: runs
This head runs in place in all four rows. The source tree base runs in the "ships beside" deploy in all four rows.
Row 2 is a build that exists. The build:ui script of sigpro passes --external ./src/sigpro.js. Its committed dist/sigpro.ui.js imports ./sigpro.js, and the package ships dist/ without src/. That build was not run here. The same command line on a fixture of two files prints ./core.js on main and ../src/core.js on this head.
Option 1: esbuild's rule by default (this head). docs/bundler/esbuild.mdx lists external under "No differences", and default/ExternalModuleExclusionRelativePath is esbuild's test of it. It breaks row 2.
Option 2: the source tree base by default (root_dir plus the directory of the chunk's path template). It changes main's path only for an importer in another directory than its chunk (rows 1, 3 and 4). It breaks row 4, and the esbuild port test stays todo. The PR gets smaller: computeChunks.rs takes root_dir for output_base. BundleOptions::cli_output_dir and its block in build_command.rs go away. options::ExternalFiles is not needed for the printing rule.
Found in the last self-review of this head, not fixed yet because the answer above decides the shape.
The wildcard-by-path match is checked for relative specifiers only. With --external './node_modules/*' a bare import of a package is bundled, and the relative imports inside that package become external. With --external './src/img/*' a CSS url() stays as written and names nothing in the output directory. Main bundles both.
BundleOptions::for_worker resets external_files, and the client transpiler of an HTML import is built from it. A client chunk then gets the rebase without the as-written rule.
Tests that fail on main (17, 16 of them new).test/bundler/bundler_edgecase.test.ts: edgecase/ExternalFileSpecifierAsWrittenIsKept, ExternalFileRelativeToOutputFile, ...Splitting, ...ToOutfile, ...CJS (require, require.resolve, import()), ...HashedDirectory, ...AfterPlugin, ...ThroughCommonJSReexport, ExternalFileThatIsAlsoAnEntryPoint, ExternalDirectoryKeepsTrailingSeparator, ExternalRelativeWildcardMatchesResolvedPath. test/bundler/esbuild/default.test.ts: default/ExternalModuleExclusionRelativePath (was todo). test/bundler/cli.test.ts: no --outdir, linked source map. test/bundler/bun-build-compile.test.ts: compile with outdir. test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts: output directory longer than a path buffer. test/bundler/metafile.test.ts: metafile entry and in-memory build. test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts: changed expectation, see below. One more test runs on Windows only: test/bundler/cli.test.ts, output written to another drive (a subst drive). It passed in CI.
Tests that pass on main and guard the resolver. An earlier head (2fd19b3) had the two new matches inside the resolver. With external = ["./lib.js"] at the top level of bunfig.toml, bun run src/x.ts then loaded lib.js of the working directory for import "./lib.js". bun build --external ./macro.ts ran the wrong file for a macro import of ./macro.ts in src/, and bun test --changed dropped the dependency. Those matches also cost 15 to 40 instructions per resolve in every process. Three tests fail on that head and pass on main and here: a file external in bunfig.toml does not change which file a runtime import loads (resolve.test.ts), edgecase/MacroFileSpecifierEqualsExternalAsWritten, and the as-written case in test/cli/test/test-changed.test.ts.
Where the output directory comes from (this head).
--outdir or outdir: that directory plus the directory part of the chunk's path template (PathTemplate::rel_dir, which prints a stand-in for a [hash] not yet known).
bun build without --outdir: the CLI passes the directory it writes to (BundleOptions::cli_output_dir). That is --outfile's directory for one file, and the entry point's directory when a linked source map makes it two files. For stdout it is empty, which means the working directory, as esbuild does.
Bun.build without outdir: the working directory.
--compile and compile: the working directory, whatever outdir is. An executable resolves what it does not embed against the working directory.
The directory is computed only when a record carries the flag (Graph::has_output_relative_import_paths), with a join and a relative() that have no length limit, so a naming template longer than a path buffer does not panic.
On Windows no relative path leads from the output to a file on another volume. That file prints as its absolute path with forward slashes (C:/src/lib.js). require and bun load it. Node's ESM loader does not accept a drive path as a specifier (ERR_UNSUPPORTED_ESM_URL_SCHEME).
Matching (this head).
BundleV2::external_file_result runs before the bundle asks the resolver, in resolve_import_records and in run_resolver (after an onResolve plugin declined). A specifier that equals a file entry as written is external as written. A ./, ../ or absolute specifier whose joined path matches a file wildcard is external by that path. A text wildcard that matches the specifier still wins and keeps it as written.
Text matching does not look at the importer, as in esbuild: import "./config.js" in sub/x.js matches --external ./config.js even though it names sub/config.js. Main bundles that file.
The resolver's own path match still runs for ./, ../ and absolute specifiers only. Aliases, package names and specifiers with no extension that reach an external file are bundled, as on main.
A relative specifier that names a directory (., ..) and matches an external keeps a trailing separator, so import x from "." prints ./lib/ and does not load a sibling lib.ts. test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts asserted the importer-relative from "." in stdout output and now expects from "./lib/".
A module-graph scan (bun test --changed) does not apply the two matches.
Other details.
import, export ... from, import(), require(), require.resolve and --bytecode module info share one printer helper, import_record_path_text. A module.exports = require() redirect carries the flag with the path.
An external file that is also an entry point stays external for a relative specifier: PathToSourceIndexMap::get_record does not answer for a flagged record.
Metafile inputs[].imports[].path for a flagged record is the cwd-relative file (lib.js) with original: "../lib.js", like the inputs keys.
CSS @import and url() print through the CSS printer and keep the specifier as written.
require() of a relative external in an ESM build with --splitting goes through __require, which belongs to the chunk that holds the runtime. When that chunk is in another directory the path resolves from there. Main fails in the same way.
Measurements. Release builds of main (9b8347a) and of this head (8b86452), linux x64.
size build/release/bun: .text 108,863,485 to 108,872,957 bytes (+9,472). .data and .bss are equal.
The resolver is the same code: Resolver::resolve_and_auto_install 5,726 bytes and check_relative_path 5,451 bytes in both builds (nm -S).
Per resolve: user-mode instructions of a Bun.resolveSync loop, as the slope between 20,000 and 120,000 iterations (a perf_event_open counter). Bare 13,820 before and 13,820 after. Absolute 5,409 to 5,449 before, 5,438 to 5,457 after. Relative 5,696 to 5,870 before, 5,869 to 5,872 after. The spread between runs of one build is larger than the difference.
Per VM start: the instructions of init_runtime_state up to the call of Transpiler::init are 223 in both builds (gdb). Allocator calls per bun -e 0 are 4,424 in both. With a one-entry external in bunfig.toml they are 4,449 and 4,452.
Bundling 3,000 modules with no external: 214.2 to 215.1 million user-mode instructions before, 214.4 to 215.3 million after, 6 interleaved runs each. The outputs are identical.
strace, valgrind, perf and bloaty are not installed in the build container.
Verification. Linux x64, debug build of this head: esbuild/default, esbuild/css, esbuild/importstar, esbuild/packagejson, esbuild/tsconfig, bundler_edgecase, bundler_splitting, bundler_browser, bundler_barrel, bundler_bun, bundler_plugin, bundler_regressions, metafile, cli, bun-build-api, bun-build-compile, transpiler/macro-test, test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts and test/cli/test/test-changed.test.ts. Nine tests that compile an executable or generate bytecode exceed their timeout in the debug build, as they do without this change. CI build 133920 passed every test lane on this head. Its one red job is the Windows baseline check, where a JPEG codec test timed out under CPU emulation.

A `./` or `../` import that matches an `external` file was copied into
the bundle as written. The specifier is relative to the importer, so one
external file imported from two directories produced two different
specifiers in one output file, and neither resolved from the output
directory.
The resolver already matches these by absolute path. Keep that path on
the import record and let the JS printer write it relative to the
directory the chunk lands in (outdir plus the chunk's template directory,
or --outfile's directory, or the working directory for stdout and
in-memory builds). Absolute and bare specifiers still print as written.
Relative wildcard externals (`./vendor/*`) now also match the resolved
path, so `../vendor/x.js` from a subdirectory is external too instead
of being bundled next to an external `./vendor/y.js`.
esbuild matches a file external twice: against the specifier as written,
which it keeps as written, and against the resolved path, which it
rebases onto the outdir. Only the path match rebases, so
`--external ./config.js` with `import "./config.js"` still prints
`./config.js` as it does today.
Also: an external file record never takes a source index from the path
map (the file can be an entry point too), a `module.exports = require()`
redirect keeps how the path prints, and the chunk directory uses a
stand-in hash so a `[hash]` directory segment keeps its depth.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The bundler now distinguishes written external specifiers from resolved external paths. It marks eligible external paths for output-relative printing, computes chunk output directories, and passes them to the JavaScript printer. Tests cover output layouts, import forms, and external matching.
External matching distinguishes written specifiers from resolved absolute paths. Eligible external files receive PRINT_PATH_RELATIVE_TO_OUTPUT, and redirected import records retain the flag.
The printer resolves flagged paths against the chunk output directory. Import-record lookups, module information, and metafile output use the corresponding path data.
Tests cover exact and wildcard externals, output layouts, import forms, metafile output, CLI and compiled builds, and long output paths.

Status: draft at 8b86452. It needs a maintainer decision before more work: what a relative external that matched by path prints. This comment has the measured table and the three options.
Reproduced on 1.4.3 and on main: bun build ./e.mjs --external "$PWD/lib.js" --outdir out/b printed ../lib.js and ./lib.js for one file, and node out/b/e.js failed with ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND. #25144 is the same defect from a user: ../../config imported from src/services/ stays ../../config in an output at the project root. On this head both print a path from the output file and run.
What this head breaks, measured: --external ./src/config.js with import "./config.js" in src/app.js and --outdir dist printed ./config.js on main and prints ../src/config.js here. A deploy that ships config.js beside dist/app.js worked on main and fails here.
The 17 tests named in the description fail on a release build of main and pass on this head. CI build 133920 passed every test lane on this head. Its one red job is the Windows baseline check, where a JPEG codec test timed out under CPU emulation.
The branch conflicts with main since #45631. The rework resolves that.

…e path needs it, with no length limit
compute_chunks joined every chunk's directory into a fixed path buffer, so
a naming template that expands past the buffer panicked ("range end index
... out of range for slice of length 4095"), also in builds with no file
externals.
The directory is now computed only when some import record prints relative
to the output, with the growable join, and the printer uses the relative()
that has no length limit.
Tests: an external file under an over-long output directory, CommonJS
output (require, require.resolve, import()), [hash] in a directory of the
naming template, and the metafile entry of a path-matched external.

…out --outdir; keep directory specifiers directories
Without --outdir the CLI writes one file to --outfile's directory and two
files (a linked source map) next to the entry point. The bundler assumed
the working directory or --outfile's directory, so a path-matched external
did not resolve from the written file. The CLI now passes the directory it
will write to (BundleOptions::cli_output_dir replaces ::outfile).
A relative specifier that names a directory (".", "..") and matches an
external keeps a trailing separator, so the rewritten path still names the
directory and not a sibling file of the same name.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new cli_output_dir fallback in src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs for the single-entry, no --outdir/--outfile case: a build that would emit more than one file is rejected in src/bundler/linker_context/generateChunksInParallel.rs (cannot write multiple output files without an output directory), and the --sourcemap=linked exception now takes the entry's directory, so the directory the CLI writes to and Chunk::output_dir_abs agree. Also checked the second bufs!(relative_abs_path) in check_relative_path (src/resolver/resolver.rs:2100): the first borrow's last use is the length capture just above it, so the two &mut borrows do not overlap.
Extended reasoning...
The change spans the resolver's external matching, the bundler's import-record rewriting, chunk output-directory computation, the JS printer, and CLI output-dir plumbing, plus tests in several bundler suites. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Two confirmed findings are posted inline (the compile+outdir base-directory mismatch in computeChunks.rs and an undrained stdout pipe in the CLI test); the note above records the two additional candidates examined this run that were ruled out from the code.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.
…orking directory; move the flag to bit 28
An executable resolves what it does not embed against the working
directory, so Bun.build({ compile, outdir }) must not print a path-matched
external relative to outdir.
PRINT_PATH_RELATIVE_TO_OUTPUT moves to bit 28 of ImportRecordFlags: other
open changes add flags at the next free bits.
The trailing-separator marker is the platform separator the resolver
appends. The CLI test drains stdout and runs in the concurrent group.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🔴 src/resolver/resolver.rs — Conditional, low: bun run users whose bunfig.toml carries a top-level external = ["./lib.js"] entry can now load the wrong file or get a module-not-found where the base loaded the right one. The new exact set makes is_external_pattern at src/resolver/resolver.rs:1230 return the specifier text as written, and the runtime takes that text as the module path at src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5369, so ./lib.js imported from src/x.ts opens <cwd>/lib.js. Fix: match exact only for bundler resolution, or hand runtime callers the importer-resolved absolute path, so bun run keeps resolving ./ and ../ specifiers against the importer. The base matched such entries only by resolved absolute path in check_relative_path.
Why this was flagged
bunfig.toml's top-level external key is parsed for every command at src/bunfig/bunfig.rs:1088-1107 into ctx.args.external, and the runtime VM builds its transpiler from those args (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:420-445), so init_external_modules at src/bundler/options.rs:186 inserts ./lib.js into the new exact set for bun run too. At runtime _resolve calls resolve_and_auto_install (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5296); for import "./lib.js" in src/x.ts the check at src/resolver/resolver.rs:1229-1230 now fires and returns Fs::Path::init(import_path) with text ./lib.js. _resolve stores ret.path = result_path.text (VirtualMachine.rs:5369) and the loader opens ./lib.js relative to the process cwd, i.e. <cwd>/lib.js instead of <cwd>/src/lib.js, or ENOENT when run from another directory. On the base branch exact did not exist: the specifier went through check_relative_path, resolved to /proj/src/lib.js, did not match abs_paths, and loaded normally.
Verification: src/bundler/options.rs:184-191 now inserts a non-wildcard, non-package external into the new result.exact set; on the base only abs_paths was populated. is_external_pattern at src/resolver/resolver.rs:1230 returns Fs::Path::init(import_path), the literal text ./lib.js, without looking at source_dir. src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5366-5369 sets ret.path = result_path.text unconditionally.
🟣 src/js_printer/lib.rs — pre-existing: in ESM output with code splitting, a require() of a path-matched external still fails to load when the runtime's chunk sits in a different directory than the chunk holding the call. The path is printed relative to this chunk's directory (src/js_printer/lib.rs:2987), but the call goes through __require, which is import.meta.require or createRequire(import.meta.url) evaluated in the runtime's chunk file, so it resolves relative to that directory instead. Fix: print an external require()/require.resolve() in a split build through this chunk's own require, as the CROSS_CHUNK_REQUIRE branch at src/js_printer/lib.rs:2972 does. The base prints the importer-relative text, which does not resolve there either.
Why this was flagged
Input: two entries src/a/entry.js and src/b/entry.js, each containing const lib = require("../lib.js") plus a shared module, built with --splitting --outdir out --target bun --external ./src/lib.js (ESM format). The record is flagged by external_file_path (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:7155) and import_record_path_text (src/js_printer/lib.rs:6548) returns ../../src/lib.js, relative to out/a. The call is printed as __require("../../src/lib.js") because options.require_ref is the runtime's __require (src/js_printer/lib.rs:2980-2987). __require is export var __require = import.meta.require; (src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:424) or createRequire(import.meta.url) (src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:428), evaluated in out/chunk-[hash].js, so it resolves out/../../src/lib.js, which does not exist, and the entry throws a module-not-found error. The base prints __require("../lib.js"), which resolves to out/../lib.js, also missing, so the failure is pre-existing. The CROSS_CHUNK_REQUIRE branch at src/js_printer/lib.rs:2968-2979 prints import.meta.require for exactly this reason, but external records do not take it.
Verification: src/js_printer/lib.rs:2980-2987 prints require_ref followed by print_import_record_path(record), which makes the path relative to this chunk's output_dir_abs. __require is import.meta.require or createRequire(import.meta.url) (src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:424-428), resolving against the runtime's chunk file. The base printed ../lib.js through the same __require, which also failed from out/.

- Around line 6570-6574: Update print_import_record_path and its callers to
URL-encode rebased paths only for ESM import, re-export, and dynamic import()
specifiers, so characters such as #, ?, and % cannot alter Node’s resolved path.
Preserve raw filesystem paths for require() and require.resolve(), which share
import_record_path_text, and avoid changing Bun output encoding until its
decoding behavior is established.

… the bundle only
The two matchers were in the resolver, which a runtime VM, a macro import and the
bun test --changed scan also use. With a top-level `external = ["./lib.js"]` in
bunfig.toml, bun run loaded lib.js of the working directory for `import "./lib.js"`
in src/, and `bun build --external ./macro.ts` ran the wrong macro file.
The resolver is as on main again. The bundle checks the two new matchers
(options::ExternalFiles) before it asks the resolver for an import record.
bun run with a top-level external in bunfig.toml. With external = ["./lib.js"], bun run src/x.ts loaded lib.js of the working directory for import "./lib.js", and failed with ENOENT reading "./lib.js" when that file did not exist. Main loads src/lib.js. The same cause had two more effects. bun build --external ./macro.ts ran the wrong file for a macro import of ./macro.ts in src/. bun test --changed dropped the dependency from its scan.
8b86452 takes the as-written match and the wildcard-by-path match out of the resolver. The bundle does them itself (options::ExternalFiles, checked in BundleV2::external_file_result before the bundle asks the resolver for an import record). The resolver is as on main again, so nothing that loads a module sees the two matchers. Three tests cover the three cases:
a file external in bunfig.toml does not change which file a runtime import loads in test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts
edgecase/MacroFileSpecifierEqualsExternalAsWritten in test/bundler/bundler_edgecase.test.ts
a bunfig.toml external that equals an import only as written does not hide the dependency in test/cli/test/test-changed.test.ts
They fail on 2fd19b3 and pass on main and on this head.
require() of a path-matched external in a split ESM build. Main fails in the same way: __require belongs to the chunk that holds the runtime, so a relative path resolves against that chunk's directory (Cannot find module '../lib.js' from '.../out/entry-<hash>.js' on main for two entry points in src/a and src/b). It affects every relative external, also one that stays as written. It needs its own change to how a chunk calls require, so it is not in this PR. The description will list it under Downsides.
This PR needs a maintainer decision before more work: what does a relative external that matched by path print?
Release builds of main (9b8347a) and of this head (8b86452). "In place" is the output run where it was built, next to the sources. "Ships beside" is a deploy of the output directory plus the external file. The file is copied to where the source tree has it. The last column is this head with the output directory equal to the source root. A base of root_dir prints the same. Every build exits 0 with an empty stderr.

../../config.js. As main
../config.js. In place: fails. Ships beside: runs
This head runs in place in all four rows. The source tree base runs in the "ships beside" deploy in all four rows.
Two facts outside the table:
Row 2 is a build that exists. The build:ui script of sigpro passes --external ./src/sigpro.js. Its committed dist/sigpro.ui.js imports ./sigpro.js, and the package ships dist/ without src/. I did not run that build. The same command line on a fixture of two files prints ./core.js on main and ../src/core.js on this head.
esbuild's rule by default (this head). docs/bundler/esbuild.mdx lists external under "No differences". It breaks row 2.
The source tree base by default: root_dir plus the directory of the chunk's path template. It changes main's path only for an importer in another directory than its chunk (rows 1, 3 and 4). Row 2 stays. It breaks row 4, and default/ExternalModuleExclusionRelativePath stays todo.
Options 1 and 2 change a default that a build can depend on. Option 3 adds a public option. My pick is option 2. It is the only option that fixes #25144 by default and keeps row 2.
I will rework the PR to the answer. With option 2 the diff gets smaller: computeChunks.rs takes root_dir for the base, and options::ExternalFiles and BundleOptions::cli_output_dir are removed. The description lists two more problems of this head: the wildcard-by-path match and the client transpiler of an HTML import. The answer decides them too.
Edited: the first version said that the source tree base keeps every build that works on main. Row 4 is a build that it does not keep. The first version also had no option 3.
