Problem

  • bun test --isolate / --parallel: a process.on("SIGTERM", fn) that a finished file never removed is gone from JS after the swap, but the signal stays caught. A SIGTERM (or SIGINT, SIGHUP) sent during a later file is swallowed and the run exits 0. The old emitter dies with its global, so the count-to-zero teardown in onDidChangeListeners (BunProcess.cpp) never runs and SIG_DFL is never restored.
  • A Bun.$ child that a finished file leaves running survives into the next file. ShellSubprocess (shell/subproc.rs) never called on_subprocess_spawn, so the auto-killer only knew Bun.spawn children.

Fix

  • The isolation stop hook calls removeAllListeners() on the outgoing process emitter. That runs the same teardown as the last process.off(): SIG_DFL restored, memoryPressure and IPC hooks released.
  • ShellSubprocess registers its Process with the auto-killer after watch() and unregisters it on exit, like Bun.spawn (JS event loop only). The test-timeout killer now covers Bun.$ too, and the docs say so.
  • Verified: two new cases in test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts, both fail on stock bun.

Background

  • --isolate keeps one JSC VM and swaps in a fresh global per file. Process-wide state must be undone at the swap by hand.
  • The first process.on(<signal>) installs a sigaction and records it in a static map. The last removeListener restores SIG_DFL.
  • The auto-killer (ProcessAutoKiller.rs) is the VM's set of live children, killed on a test timeout and at every swap. ProcessHandle::drop detaches the exit handler, so the set's extra ref never dispatches into a freed owner.
Notes
  • Other suites run on the debug ASAN build: all of test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts, test/cli/test/parallel.test.ts, test/cli/test/test-timeout-behavior.test.ts, test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts, test/js/bun/shell/leak.test.ts -t external, test/js/node/process/process-signal-listener-count.test.ts.
  • Windows: the same teardown closes the uv_signal_t. The Windows debug build passes the new shell case (which fails on stock bun there too). The signal case is skipped on Windows because process.kill terminates regardless of handlers, but a manual --isolate run with a leaked process.on("SIGINT") swaps cleanly and the next file can re-register.
  • Killing the shell's child does not cancel the shell interpreter itself: a script like sleep 10 && echo done settles its promise in the dead realm right after the kill, which is the same fate a leaked Bun.spawn(...).exited continuation already has. The child no longer outlives the file, which is what docs/test/parallel.mdx promises.
  • removeAllListeners() runs before prepareForDestruction() so onDidChangeListeners still sees a live ScriptExecutionContext for the memoryPressure/IPC branches.
  • leak.test.ts -t external asserts no retained ShellInterpreters after 100 external commands inside the runner. It passes and is not slower than with main's subproc.rs.
  • The lcov item from the same report (DA: hit counts under --parallel=N scale with N) comes from DA: values being byte-span lengths rather than execution counts. test(coverage): lcov DA reports execution counts, add FN/FNDA records #35725 makes them real counts, after which the coordinator's per-line sum is the right merge. Not touched here.

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts

…t the file swap

A process.on(<signal>) listener left behind by a finished file kept the
native handler installed with no JS target, so a later SIGTERM/SIGINT was
swallowed and the run finished rc 0. Remove the outgoing process emitter's
listeners through removeAllListeners() so the existing count-reached-zero
teardown restores SIG_DFL.

Shell (Bun.$) subprocesses never registered with the VM's auto-killer, so
neither the isolation swap nor the test-timeout kill reached them. Register
them next to Bun.spawn children.

❌ @robobun, your commit 2f55225 has 1 failures in Build #112493 (All Failures):

🧪   To try this PR locally:

bunx bun-pr 41878

That installs a local version of the PR into your bun-41878 executable, so you can run:

bun-41878 --bun

Reproduction (stock bun 1.4.3-canary, Linux x64):

// a.test.ts
import { test, expect } from "bun:test";
test("A", () => { process.on("SIGTERM", () => console.error("[A] got SIGTERM")); expect(1).toBe(1); });
// b.test.ts
import { test, expect } from "bun:test";
test("B", async () => {
  console.error("[B] listenerCount =", process.listenerCount("SIGTERM"));
  process.kill(process.pid, "SIGTERM");
  await Bun.sleep(500);
  console.error("[B] survived SIGTERM");
});

bun test --isolate ./ prints listenerCount = 0, [B] survived SIGTERM, 2 pass, rc 0. Without a.test.ts the run dies with rc 143. With this branch the --isolate run dies with SIGTERM in B, as it does without A.

For the shell half: file A runs Bun.$`sleep 0.6; echo done`.quiet().text().then(...) without awaiting it, file B sleeps. On stock bun the sleep child is still alive during B and the continuation logs 600 ms into B. With this branch the child is gone before B starts (new isolation.test.ts case checks the pid).

CI on 2f55225: every lane that touches this diff is green. The one red job is test/js/node/test/parallel/test-crypto-dh-leak.js on the x64 ASAN lane, which fails the same way on main.

Test isolation cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subprocess auto-killer registration
src/runtime/shell/subproc.rs
ShellSubprocess stores event-loop state, registers live processes with the VM auto-killer, and removes them when they exit.
Isolation teardown and regression coverage
src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp, test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts, docs/test/writing-tests.mdx
Global teardown removes process listeners. Isolation tests cover leaked Bun.$ subprocesses and SIGTERM listeners. Timeout documentation includes Bun.$ processes.

The isolation cleanup improves leaked child handling, but failed Bun.$ starts can leave retained process resources behind. That lifecycle mismatch should be fixed before merging.

A stdin or pipe-reader start failure goes through abort_after_failed_start,
which drops the exit handler, so an entry registered before that point
would stay in the auto-killer until the next kill/clear. Register at the
end instead, like Bun.spawn does. Also use an ESM fixture in the test.

Thanks — 40f8e6b addresses the earlier finding: register_with_auto_killer() now runs after the last fallible start_pipe_reader, and is skipped when watch() already reported exit, so no abort_after_failed_start path can leave a stale auto-killer entry. No new issues found on this push; given this is native lifecycle + FFI code, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed

  • Re-read subproc.rs:848-916 to confirm registration is after every abort_after_failed_start branch and gated on !notify_caller_process_already_exited.
  • on_process_exit unregisters via the raw *mut Process before any borrow that the Yield could invalidate.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The latest commit moved the auto-killer registration in ShellSubprocess from before the stdin/stdout/stderr start calls to after the final fallible Readable::start_pipe_reader, and gated it on !*notify_caller_process_already_exited. It also trimmed a couple of comments in ZigGlobalObject.cpp and switched a test fixture to ESM. This directly implements the fix I asked for in the earlier inline comment (register after the last fallible start, matching Bun.spawn).

Security risks

None new. The change is process-lifecycle bookkeeping inside the runtime; no untrusted-input parsing, auth, or crypto paths are touched.

Level of scrutiny

Medium-high. This is native Rust with raw pointers and unsafe blocks on a lifecycle path where the exit handler can free *this, plus a C++ change to the isolation stop hook. The specific concern I raised (a leaked auto-killer entry + Process ref on a failed-start abort) is now structurally impossible because registration happens only on the Ok(()) return path. The has_exited() guard inside register_with_auto_killer is an additional belt on top of the notify_caller_process_already_exited gate.

Other factors

There are still open inline comments from other bots on this PR whose content I cannot see, and the change spans FFI/pointer-provenance territory the repo's review rules flag for human eyes, so I'm deferring rather than approving.
