Problem

  • A fs.copyFile* or fs.cp* that fails partway (ENOSPC, EFBIG, EIO) throws, but leaves a destination as long as the bytes read, padded with zeros. Node's copyFile removes the destination.
  • Cause, in src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs: a guard ran ftruncate(dest, wrote) on every exit, and copy_file_using_read_write_loop added to wrote after read(), before write().

Fix

  • Count bytes written, not bytes read.
  • close_copy_dest replaces the guard. After a failed copy it truncates the destination to the bytes written and unlinks it, if it is a regular file and not the source.
  • copy_file_range takes null offsets, so a fallback continues at the fd position.
  • Verified: test/js/node/fs/fs-copyfile-write-error.test.ts (14 of 15 tests fail on 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9, 15 pass here). On a full tmpfs, 78 of 78 failed copies left a padded file before, 0 of 78 now.

Background

  • On Linux copyFile tries ioctl(FICLONE), copy_file_range, sendfile, then a read/write loop. Another filesystem fails the first two with EXDEV.
  • The destination is opened without O_TRUNC, so a copy of a file onto itself does not empty it. So a successful copy trims it.

Downsides

  • A failed copy onto an existing regular file removes that file. Before, it stayed, partly overwritten. Node's copyFile removes it too.
  • Not covered: macOS with a source over 128 KB. copyfile(3) can still leave a partial destination.
  • The unlink is by path, as in libuv. A file that another process renames onto the destination during the copy is removed.
Notes

Full filesystem probe. /dev/shm (tmpfs) filled to a chosen number of free bytes, source on another filesystem. 81 cells for each runtime: 3 runs of 27. The probe is in the status comment below.

  • A destination that unlink refuses (EBUSY, EPERM) takes the same truncate. Not run.

Tests.

  • The test uses RLIMIT_FSIZE and not a full filesystem, because a test cannot fill a shared tmpfs on a CI machine. ulimit -f 0 is the case where no byte lands. It runs on Linux only, where I could run it.
  • The fifo test: the reader opens the fifo and closes it, so the copy fails with EPIPE. With the file type check removed the test fails (dest: "removed").
  • The symlink test fails without the truncate of the failure path (target 204,800 bytes, 153,600 of them old).
  • Local runs on a debug build with ASAN, on a host with a load average between 300 and 660. fs-copyfile-write-error.test.ts: 15 pass in 3 of 4 runs, and in 1 run a test exceeded the 5 s default (a child process took over 5 s to run). cp.test.ts: 47 pass, 5 skip. cp-symlink-target.test.ts: 2 pass. fs.test.ts: 612 pass, 8 skip, and 3 tests that do not copy files exceeded their timeouts. Run alone, one of them passed, one passed in 1 of 3 runs, and one I could not select by name. Two earlier runs of fs.test.ts on this branch had 615 pass and 0 fail.
  • cargo check -p bun_runtime passes for x86_64 linux, darwin, freebsd and windows, and for aarch64 android. The macOS and FreeBSD arms are compiled, not run.
  • There is no test for the EINTR retry in cp: I cannot make copy_file_range return EINTR without a shim.
  • The test file is new, and is not part of fs.test.ts, because it covers both copyFile and cp and every case starts a process. Say so if it belongs in fs.test.ts.

Not run. macOS, FreeBSD, Windows, Android (compiled), a filesystem with reflinks, a device node (mknod is not permitted in my environment). A device node takes the same branch as the fifo.

Not covered. A reflink (FICLONE) that succeeds onto a larger existing destination: the exits are the same as on main, so the destination keeps what main keeps there (by the kernel source, the old tail for a source whose size is a multiple of the block size, and all old bytes for an empty source). An earlier commit of this PR truncated there. I removed it, because I cannot test it without a reflink filesystem and it adds one syscall to every reflink copy. A write error that only close() reports (NFS, FUSE): the copy still returns success there, and libuv reports it. A compare of the inode before the unlink would narrow the rename race of the last Downsides bullet. I did not add it: it keeps a symlink destination in place, and it can skip the unlink on a filesystem that does not keep inode numbers stable.

What else changes.

  • Node also removes a fifo or a device node after a failed copy (copyFileSync(f, "/dev/full")). This branch keeps them, as bun does today.
  • If fstat of the destination fails, nothing is truncated or unlinked.
  • The FreeBSD copyFile arm had its own unconditional unlink on failure. It uses the same file type check now.
  • cp retries copy_file_range on EINTR, as copyFile does.
  • Cost for a copy that succeeds: none by the diff. Every success exit makes the same calls as before, and the FICLONE exits are unchanged. Not measured: there is no strace, perf or valgrind in my environment.
  • A failed COPYFILE_FICLONE_FORCE onto an existing file with a second name: the name is removed and the other name is empty, as with node v26.3.0. bun 1.4.3 kept the 9,000 old bytes under the other name.
  • copyFileSync(p, p, COPYFILE_FICLONE_FORCE) on a filesystem without reflinks deleted p before. It keeps p now, and throws ENOTSUP. Node returns success there.
  • Bun.write(dest, Bun.file(src)) also calls copy_file_using_read_write_loop, and reads the count only when the loop returns success. The count differs from before only when write() returned 0 and the loop stopped early: it is then the bytes written, not the bytes read.
  • copy_single_file_sync is also the primitive of the shell cp builtin. That builtin is disabled on POSIX (posix_disabled: [Cat, Cp] in Builtin.rs), and the Windows arm (CopyFileW) is unchanged.

Related PRs.

no test proof · iteration 1 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/node/fs/fs-copyfile-write-error.test.ts

A copyFile or cp whose data copy failed (ENOSPC, EDQUOT, EIO, EFBIG)
closed the destination through a guard that ran ftruncate(dest, wrote).
The read/write fallback added to `wrote` on read, before the write, so
after a failed write the ftruncate extended the partial file to the
source's size with a hole (cross-filesystem arm), or left an honest
partial (copy_file_range arm). Node removes the destination.

Count bytes written, not bytes read, and on failure close and unlink
the destination (unless it is the source inode) instead of truncating
it, in copyFile and in the single-file primitive behind cp.

Walkthrough

Changes

Copy paths now count bytes written and use shared POSIX destination cleanup. Platform-specific paths handle reflinks and copy fallbacks through unified result flows. Tests cover EFBIG, same-file forced reflink, symlink destinations, and EPIPE failures.

Status

Reproduced on Linux with a full filesystem. /dev/shm (tmpfs) is filled to a chosen number of free bytes. The source is on another filesystem, so FICLONE and copy_file_range fail with EXDEV and the copy uses sendfile, then the read/write loop.

Each runtime ran 81 cells: 3 runs of 27. The 8 doors are copyFileSync (plain, COPYFILE_EXCL, COPYFILE_FICLONE), copyFile, promises.copyFile, cpSync, cp, promises.cp. Every call threw ENOSPC, except COPYFILE_EXCL onto an existing file, which threw EEXIST and left that file intact in all three runtimes.

"This branch" is a debug build with ASAN of 7f8eb30. The run printed nothing on stderr. A failed copy unlinks only a regular file: a fifo destination stays (covered by the test), as it does on bun today.

The test in this PR uses RLIMIT_FSIZE and not a full filesystem, because a test cannot fill a shared tmpfs on a CI machine. test/js/node/fs/fs-copyfile-write-error.test.ts fails on bun 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9 and passes on this branch.

With explicit offset pointers the fds' positions stayed at 0, so a
sendfile or read/write fallback entered after copy_file_range had made
progress would restart from the beginning and add its bytes to a
non-zero count. Pass null offsets, as bun_sys::copy_file and the
FreeBSD copyFile arm already do, so a fallback continues where
copy_file_range stopped.

Also shorten comments in these paths and disable FICLONE in the new
test's child so a reflink-capable tmpdir cannot bypass RLIMIT_FSIZE.

Route FreeBSD fs.copyFile success through close_copy_dest.

When copy_file_range reaches EOF, this path returns without truncating dest_fd. If the destination already contains more bytes than the source, the old trailing bytes remain after a successful fs.copyFile.

Track bytes copied in this loop and call close_copy_dest(dest, dest_fd, &stat_, wrote, result.is_ok()) for both success and failure paths, as in the FreeBSD copy_single_file_sync flow.

On the "outside diff" note about the FreeBSD copyFile arm (around line 4887): that arm calls ftruncate(dest_fd, 0) right after the same-inode check (line 4865), before the copy_file_range loop, so a larger pre-existing destination cannot keep a stale tail there. It also already unlinks on failure. That is why this PR leaves it as is.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs — Pre-existing: the macOS >128 KB arms of copy_file_inner and copy_single_file_sync still leave a partial destination when the copy fails partway — the same bug class this PR fixes for every other arm. After clonefile fails (cross-device, unsupported volume) they fall to bun_sys::c::copyfile_rc(src, dest, …), which creates dest, copies, and on ENOSPC/EFBIG/EIO returns an error without removing the partial file; the test caps the source at 120 KB precisely to avoid this path. Fix: on a copyfile_rc error, remove dest unless it is the source inode (stat both first), matching libuv, at both node_fs.rs:4802-4807 and node_fs.rs:8326-8344.

    Extended reasoning...

macOS, fs.copyFileSync(src, dest) with a source >128 KB across two volumes (or any volume where clonefile fails). copy_file_inner (node_fs.rs:4749-4807): stat_.st_size > 128*1024 → unlink(dest) (4752), clonefile_rc returns EXDEV (4754-4759, .is_none() is false), fall through to 4798-4807 where copyfile_rc(src, dest, COPYFILE_ACL|COPYFILE_DATA) creates dest and streams data; when the underlying write hits ENOSPC/EFBIG Apple's copyfile(3) returns -1 without unlinking the destination. errno_sys_p produces Some(err) and 4807 returns it — no cleanup. The parallel cp primitive at 8316-8344 is identical. Base branch behaves the same, so a user still gets a truncated dest after this PR on the macOS large-file path even though every Linux/FreeBSD/macOS-small-file arm now removes it. REVIEW.md requires the whole class (fast/slow paths, per-platform branches) be fixed together or the exclusion stated; the PR does neither, and the new test intentionally sizes the source under 128 KB to skip this arm (test file line 9).

Verification: pre-existing — the macOS >128 KB fallback arm is unchanged by this PR and the base branch already fails the same way by the same route. copy_file_inner, src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:4749-4807 (HEAD): when stat_.st_size > 128*1024, after the pre-emptive unlink(dest) (4752) and a failed clonefile_rc (4754-4759, e.g. EXDEV cross-volume), control falls to 4798-4807: ```rust return…

On the macOS arms for a source over 128 KB (clonefile(), then copyfile(3)): correct, this PR does not change them. A copyfile(3) that fails partway can still leave a partial destination there.

It is not in this PR because I cannot run that path: no macOS machine here, and a CI test must make clonefile() fail first (a second volume, or a volume that is not APFS) and then make copyfile(3) fail partway. The PR description will list it as a case that users still hit.

For reference, libuv's uv__fs_copyfile (current source, src/unix/fs.c) does not call copyfile(3). It opens the destination itself on every unix and unlinks it on any error after that open.

On failure close_copy_dest unlinked any destination that was not the
source inode, so a copy to a fifo or a device node that failed
(fs.copyFileSync(f, "/dev/full")) removed that fifo or node. Unlink
only when fstat succeeds and reports a regular file that is not the
source. The FreeBSD copyFile arm had its own unconditional unlink on
failure and now uses the same check.

Tests: add a ulimit -f 0 case (no byte lands, like a filesystem with
no free block) and a fifo destination whose reader goes away.

The reader's open of the fifo waits for the child to open it for
writing. If the child exits first, open a writer to release the
pending open, so the test fails on its assertions and not on a
timeout.

Route the large-file fallback through an owned destination descriptor.

When clonefile_rc fails for a large source, the current copyfile_rc fallback can leave a partial destination without calling close_copy_dest. Open the destination with O_EXCL or O_TRUNC, call fcopyfile with COPYFILE_ACL | COPYFILE_DATA, and pass the result through close_copy_dest. COPYFILE_EXCL is for path-based copyfile; exclusive creation must be enforced by open.

Replace the large-source fallback’s path-based copyfile_rc call with
descriptor-based copying: open the source read-only, open the destination with
exclusive creation when overwriting is disallowed or truncation otherwise, and
call fcopyfile with ACL and data flags. Pass the destination descriptor and copy
result to close_copy_dest, preserving source and destination path context on
open errors.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clean up failed large-file cp copies.

When stat_.st_size > 128 * 1024, copy_single_file_sync falls back to copyfile_rc after clonefile fails. An error from copyfile_rc can leave a partial destination, but this branch returns the error without cleanup. The close_copy_dest call at line 8550 only handles the separate read/write branch.

Add cleanup that removes only a destination created or modified by this operation, while preserving an existing destination when COPYFILE_EXCL applies. This correction is independent of copy_file_inner, which has a separate direct copyfile_rc error boundary.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Still open from earlier reviews (1):

  • Unresolved: 1 minor or pre-existing.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs — pre-existing: on macOS, fs.copyFile*(p, p) for a file over 128 KB deletes p and throws ENOENT, where Node leaves the file intact. copy_file_inner at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:4992 unlinks dest before clonefile without checking that dest is the source, so the only link to the data is gone before the copy starts. Fix: skip that unlink when dest resolves to the same st_dev/st_ino as src (returning EINVAL or success as libuv does), which also covers a src that is a symlink to dest; the cp arm at node_fs.rs:8512 shares the pattern but is shielded by checkPathsSync. The PR's test at line 91 covers only the Linux FICLONE_FORCE variant of this class.

    Why this was flagged

A caller runs fs.copyFileSync(p, p) (or fs.promises.copyFile / fs.copyFile) on macOS with p a regular file larger than 128 KB and no COPYFILE_EXCL; the same happens when src is a symlink whose target is dest. copy_file_inner's macOS arm (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:4974-5003) stats src, sees st_size > 128 * 1024, and because !shouldnt_overwrite() runs Syscall::unlink(dest) at node_fs.rs:4992 before any same-inode check. dest is the same path (or the symlink's target), so the last link to the data is removed. clonefile_rc(src, dest, 0) at node_fs.rs:4995 then fails with ENOENT because src no longer exists, and the copyfile_rc fallback at node_fs.rs:5043 fails the same way, so the user gets ENOENT and the file is gone. Node (libuv) never unlinks dst before copying and refuses or no-ops on a same-inode pair, so the file survives there. The base branch behaves identically; the PR adds a same-source guard (unlink_failed_copy_dest, node_fs.rs:4929-4937) and a test for the Linux FICLONE_FORCE case at test/js/node/fs/fs-copyfile-write-error.test.ts:91 but leaves this macOS sibling. The <=128 KB…

Verification: pre-existing (security-irrelevant data loss; the base has the identical lines). Trigger: on macOS, fs.copyFile/copyFileSync/promises.copyFile(p, p) (or src a symlink resolving to dest) with p a regular file whose st_size > 128 KB and no COPYFILE_EXCL/FICLONE_FORCE. Mechanism verified in /home/claude/bun/src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs: the macOS arm of copy_file_inner does Syscall::stat(src)…

copyFile already retries. In cp an EINTR from copy_file_range failed
the copy, and the failure path now removes the destination.
…of a failed copy

The unlink removes one name. When the destination has another name (a
hard link, or it was reached through a symlink) or the unlink fails,
the file stayed with the new prefix followed by its old tail, at its
old size. Truncate a regular destination that is not the source to
the bytes written first, so what stays holds only bytes of the source.

Tests: a symlink destination, and a fifo source larger than a pipe on
kernels with 64 KB pages.

An empty target passed the check. On Linux the target must hold the
bytes written up to the file size limit.
A reflink that succeeds went through one more ftruncate. It is a cost
for a copy that never fails, and there is no reflink filesystem to
test it on. Restore the exits: fchmod and close. Only the failed
COPYFILE_FICLONE_FORCE exit uses close_copy_dest.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs — pre-existing: on btrfs/XFS-reflink, copying a block-aligned or empty file over a larger existing file leaves the old tail (or the whole old content) in the destination, reported as success. The FICLONE success exits at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:5214-5217 and :8641-8644 only fchmod and close; dest was opened without O_TRUNC and the kernel's whole-file clone never shrinks the destination's size. Fix: make every FICLONE exit (force and opportunistic, copyFile and cp) leave dest exactly source-sized, e.g. ftruncate(dest_fd, 0) before the ioctl as libuv does, or route the success exits through close_copy_dest with wrote = size. Commit 7f8eb30 removed the latter remedy that f6eb89a had added, so HEAD is back to base behaviour here.

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: fs.copyFileSync(src, dest) or fs.cpSync(src, dest) on Linux where dest already exists, is larger than src, both are on a reflink filesystem (btrfs, XFS reflink=1), and src's size is a multiple of the block size (including 0 bytes). copy_file_inner opens dest with O_CREAT|O_WRONLY and no O_TRUNC (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:5187-5192), then ioctl_ficlone(dest_fd, src_fd) at :5213 (or :8640 for cp). The kernel's FICLONE (len 0 = to source EOF) only ever grows the destination i_size (btrfs clone_finish_inode_update / xfs_reflink_update_dest use if newlen > i_size), and for an empty source generic_remap_file_range_prep returns 0 immediately without touching dest. rc == 0, so :5214-5217 fchmod, close and return Ok: the user gets a destination whose first bytes are the source and whose tail is the old file's bytes (or, for an empty source, the untouched old file), with no error. The base branch behaves the same, so this is pre-existing; the intermediate commit f6eb89a fixed it by setting wrote = size and ftruncating in close_copy_dest, and commit 7f8eb30 (HEAD) restored the…

Verification: pre-existing, acknowledged in diff: commit 7f8eb30 ("keep the FICLONE exits of copyFile/cp as they were") deliberately removed the earlier in-PR fix (// FICLONE reflinks up to the source EOF but never shrinks dest. / wrote = size as u64 feeding ftruncate) with the justification "It is a cost for a copy that never fails" — that bound is inaccurate: the hazard is precisely on the SUCCESS…

On the FICLONE success exits: correct. At the head of this PR they are the same as on main (fchmod, close, no truncate), so a reflink onto a larger existing destination keeps what main keeps there.

An earlier commit of this PR (f6eb89a) truncated the destination to the source size on those exits. I removed that in 7f8eb30, for two reasons:

  • I cannot run it. There is no filesystem with reflinks in my environment, so the truncate was an untested change on a path where the copy succeeds.
  • It adds one syscall to every reflink copy.

The commit message names only the cost. It does not say that the same call also cut the old tail. That part of the message is incomplete, and the PR description now states the open case.

This PR is about the copy that fails. The stale tail after a successful reflink is a separate defect that main has today, and it needs a test on btrfs or XFS. libuv avoids it with ftruncate(dstfd, 0) before the ioctl. If a maintainer wants the truncate back in this PR, it is a change of a few lines at the three exits.
