Status: reproduced on bun 1.4.3 with a seccomp filter that makes sendfile(2) return EINVAL (200 head with Content-Length, then a connection reset and no body). With this branch the 8 MiB body arrives byte-exact and a second request on the same keep-alive connection parses. The four new tests in test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-file.test.ts fail on 1.4.3 and pass on the debug build. CI: the Linux lanes that run the new tests are green on both builds (110692 and 110760). The only red lane is Windows 2019 x64, on |

WalkthroughThe change adds Linux and Android sendfile availability tracking, extracts configurable reader startup, and falls back to reader streaming after supported sendfile errors. It also updates response header state handling and adds a Linux regression test. ChangesSendfile fallback streaming
Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Fallback responses may remain pending or close incorrectly when sendfile fails after transmitting part of a file. This partial-progress path should be fixed and covered before merge; the regression test should also visibly report when seccomp prevents validation. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4✅ Passed checks (4 passed)

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes a uWS response-state bit (HTTP_WRITE_CALLED now set by prepare_for_sendfile) that gates framing decisions across several HttpResponse code paths, a human familiar with the uWS state machine should confirm.
What was reviewed:
- Traced the fallback's
resp.write()→resp.end()throughHttpResponse.h: withHTTP_WROTE_CONTENT_LENGTH_HEADERset (bothFileRouteandRequestContextcallmark_wrote_content_length_header()beforestart()on the sendfile-eligible path) andHTTP_WRITE_CALLEDnow set,write()takes the raw-bytes else-if arm andinternalEnd()skips both the chunked-terminator and the auto-Content-Length branches — no extra bytes in the body. - Confirmed
uws_res_end_sendfiledoes not readHTTP_WRITE_CALLED, so the pure sendfile path is unchanged; the other readers of that bit (end_without_body,flushHeaders,JSNodeHTTPServerSocket) are not on the sendfile path. start_readerextraction is behavior-preserving for the original call site; the fallback passesSome(sf.offset)so it always usespread(correct — sendfile with a non-null offset pointer doesn't move the fd position), and a stale sendfileon_writableafter the mode switch lands in the reader arm, which is idempotent.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR adds a read+write fallback to Bun.serve's Linux sendfile(2) path in src/runtime/server/FileResponseStream.rs: when sendfile returns EINVAL/ENOSYS/ENOTSUP/EPERM after the header section (with Content-Length) is already flushed, the stream switches to Mode::Reader and streams the remaining declared bytes via BufferedReader using pread from the current sendfile offset. The reader-startup logic is extracted into start_reader() shared by both the initial non-sendfile path and the new fallback. A process-global SENDFILE_UNAVAILABLE: AtomicBool (Relaxed) latches on ENOSYS so can_sendfile skips the syscall thereafter. On the C++ side, uws_res_prepare_for_sendfile now sets HTTP_WRITE_CALLED after emitting the header-terminating CRLF so the fallback's first write() doesn't re-terminate headers inside the body. Four new Linux-only tests in test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-file.test.ts install a seccomp BPF filter via bun:ffi prctl to force each errno, then fetch a 2 MiB file twice on one keep-alive connection and assert byte-exact bodies.
Security risks
None identified. The change adds a fallback for a kernel-refused syscall; no new user input parsing, no auth/crypto surface. The seccomp filter in the test is confined to a spawned child process. The SENDFILE_UNAVAILABLE static is a monotonic capability probe with no data dependency, so Relaxed ordering is appropriate.
Level of scrutiny
High. This is the Bun.serve file-response hot path, and the C++ change flips a uWS response-state bit on every sendfile response, not just fallback ones. HTTP_WRITE_CALLED is read in HttpResponse::write(), internalEnd(), flushHeaders(), sendTerminatingChunk(), tryWriteBody(), uws_res_end_without_body(), and JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp. I traced the paths reachable from the sendfile stream and confirmed: uws_res_end_sendfile does not read the bit; the fallback's write()+end() sequence takes the raw-bytes arm because HTTP_WROTE_CONTENT_LENGTH_HEADER is always set on the sendfile-eligible path (both FileRoute::serve_opened at line 437-439 and RequestContext::render_metadata at line 3895-3897 call mark_wrote_content_length_header() for regular files before FileResponseStream::start(), and can_sendfile requires FileType::File with a known length); and internalEnd() with both bits set skips the chunked terminator and the auto-Content-Length write. The bit's semantic ("header section is terminated") is exactly what prepare_for_sendfile does, so setting it is arguably fixing an omission. Still, someone who owns the uWS state machine should confirm no other consumer is surprised.
Other factors
The start_reader extraction is a mechanical refactor — I diffed it against the original inline body and the only behavioral change is self.as_ptr() vs the raw this pointer for the parent, which are equivalent. The fallback always passes Some(sf.offset) (even at 0), which forces start_file_offset/pread — correct because sendfile with a non-null offset pointer doesn't advance the fd position, and the response may have already sent partial bytes. A stale sendfile on_writable firing after the mode switch dispatches to the reader branch of on_writable, whose hold_read_ref/unpause/read sequence is idempotent on an already-running reader. The test follows repo conventions closely (tempDir, bunEnv spread, port: 0, test.concurrent, Buffer.alloc, combined-object .toEqual, graceful skip on seccomp-unavailable, keep-alive framing check via a second request). The PR notes an overlap with open PR #37100 that will need a rebase. No CODEOWNERS cover these paths.

Problem
Bun.servesends a regular file body of 1 MiB or more over plain TCP withsendfile(2). When the kernel, a seccomp policy, or the source filesystem refuses it (EINVAL,ENOSYS,EOPNOTSUPP,EPERM), the client getsHTTP/1.1 200 OKwithContent-Lengthand thenConnection reset by peerwith an empty body. Theerror()handler never runs._ => self.fail_with(..)arm inFileResponseStream::on_sendfile(src/runtime/server/FileResponseStream.rs:452).prepare_for_sendfilealready flushed the head, soforce_closeis the only thing left.Bun.write(dst, Bun.file(src))already falls back on the same errnos (src/sys/copy_file.rs:370), and Go and libuv do the same for sendfile.Fix
on_sendfileswitches the stream toMode::Readerand starts theBufferedReaderat the current sendfile offset with the remaining length as its limit. The reader setup is nowstart_reader, shared with the non-sendfile path.uws_res_prepare_for_sendfilesetsHTTP_WRITE_CALLED. The fallback's firstwrite()then does not emit a second header-terminating CRLF inside the body. The pure sendfile path does not read that bit.ENOSYSalso sets a process-wide flag, socan_sendfilestops trying the missing syscall.test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-file.test.ts(5 new cases: one per errno, all fail on bun 1.4.3 with "socket connection was closed unexpectedly", plus a fallback after the firstsendfilecall sent 2.6 MB of a 16 MiB file). Alsobun-serve-static.test.tsandserve.test.ts.Background
FileResponseStreamstreams an open fd into a uWS response. It has two backends:sendfile(2)(Linux, plain TCP, regular file, 1 MiB or more) and aBufferedReader(read or pread, thenresp.write).HTTP_WRITE_CALLEDis the uWS state bit that says the header section is terminated.HttpResponse::write()writes the blank line on the first call unless the bit is set.src/http/SendFile.rs). That is a separate follow-up.on_sendfileround too. One of the two needs a small rebase after the other lands.Notes
Self-reviewed: the review agreed with the shape and raised these: add
EPERM(done), make theENOSYSresult sticky (done), name the fetch-client gap as a follow-up (done), say plainly that no user reported this (done).Repro without strace: the server process installs a seccomp filter through
bun:ffi(prctl(PR_SET_NO_NEW_PRIVS), thenprctl(PR_SET_SECCOMP, SECCOMP_MODE_FILTER)with a 4-instruction BPF program that returnsSECCOMP_RET_ERRNOfor__NR_sendfile). The describe block probes seccomp once withBun.spawnSyncand skips when the filter cannot be installed.
