The signal handler dropped a signal when the 8192-slot ring was full. A storm of one signal at a busy main thread lost a later SIGTERM. The ring now records an overflowed signal number in a per-number bit mask. The consumer drains the mask after the ring, so each overflowed signal reaches its JS listener at least once. The handler always wakes the loop.

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to Bursts exceeding 8192 occurrences of one signal can still lose callbacks, contradicting the intended counted delivery behavior. The excess count should be retained for a later tick before merge. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4✅ Passed checks (4 passed)

import in the -e fixture, keeping the test behavior unchanged and avoiding
dynamic module loading.
- Line 1389: Update the signal saturation test around the ready/SIGTERM output
assertion to capture the reported SIGUSR1 count and require it to be at least
8192, retrying the saturation sequence or otherwise controlling scheduling if
needed for deterministic ring capacity. Move the fs dependency used by this test

kill(2) to the own pid delivers the signal before the syscall returns, so the ring fills with one entry per call and the test can assert that at least 8192 SIGUSR1 ran before SIGTERM.

The ring held 8192 entries in arrival order and dropped a signal when full. Nothing observes arrival order across signal numbers within one loop tick, so the order bought nothing and the bound lost signals. PendingSignals keeps one counter per signal number and a bitmask of numbers that may be pending. The handler does one increment and one or, both async-signal-safe, and can never be full. The main thread takes each nonzero count, lowest number first, and enqueues one task per arrival, at most 8192 per number per tick. Several consumers can take at once because each count is swapped out.
SIGUSR1 is 30 on Darwin, above SIGTERM (15), so the SIGTERM listener ran first there. SIGHUP is 1 everywhere.

Status: ready for review. Reproduced on bun 1.4.1: a child that sends itself 10000 SIGHUP and then SIGTERM prints CI: three runs (110419, 110461, 110464). Every lane that ran the new test passed it, including darwin arm64 and x64. Each run had one unrelated red lane ( |

src/jsc/PosixSignalHandle.rs— nit: this PR deletes the ring buffer but leaves three doc comments describingPosixSignalHandleas one —PosixSignalHandle.rs:50("Calls enqueue on the ring buffer"),event_loop.rs:106("BoxedPosixSignalHandlering buffer"), andevent_loop.rs:587("the ring-buffer backing"). Fix: reword all three to describe the per-signal counters (e.g. "records the signal in the pending-signal counters"; "the counter array is disjoint from*self").Extended reasoning...
The
SignalRingtype and its 8192-slot buffer are removed by this diff, andPosixSignalHandlenow wrapsPendingSignals(a 256-counter array plus a 4-word bitmask). The doc comment onBun__onPosixSignalat src/jsc/PosixSignalHandle.rs:50 still says "Calls enqueue on the ring buffer", and the untouched src/jsc/event_loop.rs at lines 106 and 587 still describe thesignal_handlerfield and its aliasing invariant in terms of a ring buffer. These comments are now factually wrong after the merge and will mislead the next reader auditing the async-signal-safe path or the&mut selfaliasing justification intick_concurrent_with_count. No behavioral impact — documentation only — but REVIEW.md asks that dead artifacts be removed in the PR that makes them dead.Verification: nit — all three stale "ring buffer" comments are present exactly as the candidate states, and this PR makes them wrong. src/jsc/PosixSignalHandle.rs:50:

Updated the three comments that still described the handle as a ring buffer (PosixSignalHandle.rs:50, event_loop.rs:106 and :587) in 3e3aef6. Comment-only change. |

PendingSignals::takeresets the full counter before this loop runs. WhencountexceedsMAX_TASKS_PER_SIGNAL, this code enqueues only 8192 tasks and discards the remainder. A burst of 10,000SIGHUPsignals therefore loses 1,808 callbacks. Preservecount - MAX_TASKS_PER_SIGNALfor a later drain if the limit is intended to defer work rather than drop signals.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Before this change it pushed the number into an 8192-slot MPSC ring and wrote the loop's eventfd.EventLoop::tick_concurrent_with_count(src/jsc/event_loop.rs:585). Each number becomes onePosixSignalTask, which calls the JS listeners.Notes

kill(2)to the own pid delivers the signal to the calling thread before the syscall returns, so there is no kernel coalescing and nothing drains the pending signals until the script ends. The count is therefore exact and the assertion isSIGTERM after 8192 SIGHUP(10000 sent, capped at 8192 listener calls per number per tick). The storm usesSIGHUP(1 on every POSIX platform) so it is delivered beforeSIGTERM(15) everywhere.SIGUSR1is 10 on Linux but 30 on Darwin.History of this PR: the first version kept the ring and added a 256-bit overflow mask for signals that arrived while it was full (commits dcfa462, 39b1c9f, a349313). A self-review pointed out that the ring's only property over a counter array is cross-number arrival order, which nothing in tree or in JS depends on, and that the mask added a second single-consumer-only invariant on top of the protocol #41177 had just stabilised. The counter array deletes that protocol and its stress harness. Net: 205 insertions, 285 deletions.
libuv does the same thing as the old ring: its handler writes a 16-byte message into a non-blocking pipe and drops the signal on
EAGAIN, at about 4096 pending messages. So node also loses the signal in this scenario. This change makes bun stricter than node here.Per-tick cost:
takeloads fouru64mask words on an idle tick, the same as the old ring's onestateload. On a non-idle tick it swaps the nonzero words and only the counters whose bit is set.The mask is a hint, not the source of truth. A producer increments the count first and sets the bit second. If the consumer swaps the mask between the two, the count is read on this tick (the bit was set earlier) or on the next one (the producer's
fetch_orlands after the swap). A consumer that reads 0 after a bit skips it.process.test.jshas one unrelated failure in this container: theprocesstest checkstypeof process.env.USER, andUSERis unset here.
