I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes minifier renaming semantics across the parser, AST, and printer — and intentionally diverges from esbuild's behavior for with-pinned names — a human familiar with the renamer should also take a look.

Overview
This PR fixes a minifier bug where symbols pinned by with statements (and, in --no-bundle, named exports and module/exports/require refs) could have their original names reused as slot names for other symbols in enclosing scopes, producing shadowing and wrong runtime behavior. It touches six files: src/ast/scope.rs adds a contains_with: bool field mirroring contains_direct_eval; src/js_parser/p.rs propagates it up the parent chain when a with scope is pushed and adds set_must_not_be_renamed_through_links() to pin every symbol on a link chain; src/js_parser/scan/scan_symbols.rs uses the new helper at the identifier-reference pin site; src/js_printer/renamer.rs extends the recursive descent in compute_reserved_names_for_scope to contains_with as well as contains_direct_eval; src/js_printer/lib.rs reorders print_ast so export/module/require pins are set before reserved names are computed; and three itBundled tests in test/bundler/bundler_minify.test.ts cover all 54 single-character minifier names plus the hoisted/merged link cases and the --no-bundle export case.
Security risks
None. This is a JS minifier symbol-renaming correctness fix operating on already-parsed AST; there is no untrusted-input parsing surface changed, no I/O, no auth/crypto, and no allocation-size arithmetic. The worst failure mode is over-reservation of names (extra recursion into child scopes), which only costs slightly longer minified identifiers.
Level of scrutiny
Medium-high. The renamer is correctness-critical: a wrong reservation silently changes program semantics in minified output, and REVIEW.md explicitly calls out that for ported parser/printer code esbuild is the reference implementation. The PR description states esbuild 0.25.1 has the same bug, so this is a deliberate divergence from the reference — that is fine and the reasoning is sound, but it is exactly the kind of change a maintainer who owns the parser/printer should sign off on. The print_ast reordering also falls under "treat refactors as guilty until proven behavior-preserving"; I traced it and the only observable difference is that must_not_be_renamed is now visible to compute_reserved_names_for_scope, which is the intended fix, but a second pair of eyes on that block is worthwhile.
Other factors
The implementation is disciplined: contains_with is a straight structural copy of the contains_direct_eval pattern (same parent-chain walk shape, same recursion guard in the renamer), and the new field is consumed at a real site (renamer.rs:1227/1230). The link-chain pinning helper is applied at all sibling sites (both with pin locations plus the hoisting-merge site), satisfying the "fix the whole class" rule. The bundler-side callers of compute_reserved_names_for_scope in crossChunkNames.rs and renameSymbolsInChunk.rs inherit the fix through the shared helper, and the bundled format: "cjs" test covers that path. Test coverage is thorough — the 54-function generator makes the test independent of character-frequency ordering, and the PR notes it fails on 1.4.1. No CODEOWNERS entries cover these paths. The bug-hunting system exited on dry_streak with no findings.

The minify renamer keeps a pinned symbol's original name and gives it
no slot. Nothing kept that name out of the slot names in three cases:
- A symbol read through a `with` body is pinned, but the reserved set
only covered the module scope and direct eval scopes. A parameter of
the same function could take the name: `function f(o) { var t = 1;
with (o) { return t } }` printed as `function f(t) { var t = 1;
with (t) return t }`.
- When the `var` was declared twice, the `with` pin landed on a linked
ref while the renamer follows the link to the function-level symbol.
That symbol was renamed together with the `with` body's read of it.
- `bun build --no-bundle` pinned the named exports after the reserved
set was computed, so a local in a nested function could shadow an
export it reads.
Add Scope.contains_with, set on a `with` scope and on every scope that
encloses it like contains_direct_eval, and let
compute_reserved_names_for_scope walk into those scopes. Pin through
the link chain at both `with` pin sites and when hoisting links a
pinned symbol to an existing one. Pin the exports before the reserved
set is computed.
`with (obj) var t = 2` declares `t` in the with scope. The hoisting walk starts at the parent scope, so it never passed a with scope and never pinned the symbol.
…ort's name Each test exports the 54 one-character names, in every export form, and declares 54 other names, so every export name is wanted by one of them. The cases are a parameter, a local and a catch binding of a function that reads the exports, an import and a private top-level name, and the same through Bun.Transpiler transformSync and transform.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I also checked that the new contains_with descent reaches the bundler's chunk renaming (both crossChunkNames.rs and renameSymbolsInChunk.rs go through the shared compute_reserved_names_for_scope, so no separate site needed the flag), that the with-scope pin in the hoisting loop runs after the sloppy-mode block-function ref replacement so it pins the hoisted replacement rather than the original, and that moving the export-pin block in print_ast ahead of MinifyRenamer::init has no ordering dependency — nothing between the new position and the reserved-name computation reads must_not_be_renamed.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a Scope.contains_with flag mirroring contains_direct_eval, pins with-referenced symbols through their link chains in the parser, and moves the --no-bundle export pinning ahead of reserved-name computation in the printer; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One confirmed inline finding (a pre-existing sibling hole where an export ref that heads a link chain is still not pinned through links) already signals a human should look, so this note only records what else was examined and ruled out.
`export var t = 1; var t = 2` is two symbols. The second one replaces the first in the module scope and the first links to it. `print_ast` pinned the ref the export recorded, which is the first symbol, and the renamer names the symbol it links to. So `--no-bundle` with `--minify-identifiers` printed `export var r = 1; var r = 2` and the module had no export `t`. Pin each symbol on the link chain. The walk uses the checked `get_mut`, because an empty source or a data loader has refs with no symbol.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the export var t; var t link-following case I flagged earlier is now handled in print_ast and covered by NoBundleExportNameKeptWhenDeclaredAgain. Because this changes how the bundler computes reserved names for every chunk (a with body now reserves names chunk-wide even without --minify, which esbuild does not do), a human look at that design choice would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- Traced
contains_withfrompush_scope(walks up until an already-marked ancestor, same ascontains_direct_eval) to its only consumer,compute_reserved_names_for_scope, on theprint_ast,renameSymbolsInChunkandcrossChunkNamespaths. - Checked the four
set_must_not_be_renamed_through_linkssites and thelink.setmerge: hoisting runs before the visit pass, so links exist whenscan_symbolspins a with-body reference; the remaining directset_must_not_be_renamed(true)sites (arguments_ref, the injected class-field symbol,AstBuilder) are fresh unlinked symbols. - Checked the
print_astreorder: nothing between the old and new pin sites reads or clears the flag, andsymbolsis moved intoMinifyRenamer::initafter the pin loop. Scope::EMPTYis the only constructor; the one struct literal uses..Scope::EMPTY.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the parser's scope hoisting (src/js_parser/p.rs), symbol scanning, the printer's minify-renamer setup (src/js_printer/lib.rs) and the shared reserved-name computation used by both the no-bundle and bundled renamers (src/js_printer/renamer.rs), plus a new Scope field. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The latest commit addresses the one inline finding from the prior review, and the added tests exercise all 54 single-character names so they cannot pass by luck of slot ordering. Deferring rather than approving because the reserved-name descent for with deliberately deviates from esbuild and alters non-minified bundle naming (the PR's own total2 example), which has no test and is a design tradeoff maintainers should confirm.
The renamer for bundles without --minify numbers a nested binding that
meets an outer name its scope references. The number it picks cannot be
a name that a `with` body reads: `function (require_dep, obj) { var
require_dep2 = 1; ... with (obj) { return require_dep2 } }` printed the
parameter as `require_dep2` too.

I reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the link-chain gap flagged earlier on the --no-bundle export pin is now handled (the print_ast loop follows link and minify/NoBundleExportNameKeptWhenDeclaredAgain plus the transpiler test cover it). Because the contains_with descent in compute_reserved_names_for_scope also feeds the bundler's non-minified renamer and cross-chunk naming, and so changes output names (total -> total2) for unminified bundles containing a with, a human look at that trade-off would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- The moved export/module/exports/require pin in
print_ast: it now runs beforecompute_reserved_names_for_scope, and thewhile let Some(symbol) = symbols.get_mut(ref_)loop stops onRef::NONEand unlinked symbols; links only point inner-to-ancestor from hoisting merges, so no cycle. set_must_not_be_renamed_through_linksat all three parser call sites (with-scope reference, with-ancestor hoist, brace-lesswith (o) var t) and the pin propagation on silent merge — all pin the symbol the renamer reads afterfollow.contains_withpropagation mirrorscontains_direct_eval(early break when already set) and is consumed by all threecompute_reserved_names_for_scopecallers.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches the parser's var-hoisting walk and with-scope handling (src/js_parser/p.rs, scan_symbols.rs), adds a Scope.contains_with flag, widens compute_reserved_names_for_scope in the renamer, and reorders the export pinning in print_ast, with 8 new itBundled/transpiler tests across bundled, --no-bundle, transformSync and transform paths. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The previous inline finding from this bot (export pin not following link chains) is addressed in the code and covered by a dedicated test, and the bug hunt ran dry with no new findings. Deferring rather than approving because the renamer change alters names in non-minified bundles containing a with statement (a visible output change for the whole chunk) and the parser hoisting logic is subtle enough that a maintainer familiar with the esbuild port should weigh it.
The cases in bundler_edgecase.test.ts and transpiler/transpiler.test.js test the same reserved names as the cases here. One file holds all 11.
