Problem

  • { __proto__: x } sets the prototype of an object literal. { __proto__ } and { ["__proto__"]: x } define an own property. print_property (src/js_printer/lib.rs) switched between these forms: it collapsed { __proto__: __proto__ } to { __proto__ }, and printed a shorthand { __proto__ } as __proto__: renamed once the bundler renamed the value or minify-syntax inlined it. Both change the prototype or the own keys of user objects.
  • The linker built the __export(exports_x, { alias: () => v }) literal with plain keys (create_exports_for_file, doStep5.rs). An export aliased __proto__ became the prototype of that literal and vanished from the namespace. The JSON named-export rewrite, the dev server export lowering, the server component proxy module and the client manifest had the same hole.

Fix

  • The printer follows esbuild's canUseShorthandProperty rule: a __proto__ property prints as shorthand only if it was parsed as shorthand. A shorthand __proto__ whose value no longer prints as the bare identifier __proto__ prints as ["__proto__"]: value.
  • Every object literal the bundler synthesizes from export names marks a __proto__ key computed with the existing own_key_property_flags helper. The JSON named-export rewrite keeps the flags of the property it replaces.
  • Correct because each form now survives the printer unchanged, whatever happens to the value. Output for every other key is unchanged.
  • Verified: the *Proto* cases in test/bundler/bundler_edgecase.test.ts, plus transpiler/transpiler.test.js, transpiler/property.test.ts, esbuild/default.test.ts, bake/dev/esm.test.ts and bake/dev/production.test.ts. The notes list every suite run.

Background

  • WasShorthand is a parser flag on G::Property (parse_property.rs). It records that the source used { x }, where the key and the value identifier are the same name.
  • own_key_property_flags (src/ast/e.rs) returns IsComputed for a "__proto__" key. The JSON, TOML and YAML loaders already used it.
  • create_exports_for_file emits var exports_x = {}; __export(exports_x, { a: () => a }) for a module whose namespace is used. __export walks the literal with for..in and defines a getter per own key, so a key that became the prototype is never installed.

This supersedes #36120 (printer half) and #33052 (linker half), both closed. Its tests include every case those two PRs added.

Notes

Repro on the released binary (1.4.1):

// a.js: bun a.js -> false true []      node -> true false ["__proto__"]
function foo(__proto__) { return { __proto__: __proto__ } }
function bar(proto) { { let __proto__ = proto; return { __proto__ } } }
const P = { isP: true };
console.log(Object.getPrototypeOf(foo(P)) === P, Object.getPrototypeOf(bar(P)) === P, Object.keys(bar(P)));

The runtime transpiler runs with minify-syntax on. It inlines the single-use let __proto__ = proto into the shorthand property, so { __proto__ } became { __proto__: proto } and set the prototype. bun build --minify produced {__proto__:o} for both functions.

// lib.js
function p() { return "x" }
export { p as __proto__, p as other }
// bun build in.js (import * as ns) -> ["other"] false. Same with require() and --format=cjs.

import data, { __proto__ as p } from "./data.json" with --minify dropped the __proto__ key of data. The lazy-export rewrite replaced the JSON property with a fresh G::Property and default flags, so the computed flag from the JSON parser was lost and the renamed value printed as __proto__:t.

In the dev server with separateSSRGraph, the server sees a "use client" module through a generated proxy module (AstBuilder.rs). Its hmr.exports literal had the same hole: export { C as __proto__ } gave a namespace with Object.keys of ["other"] and the client reference as its prototype.

Output shapes match esbuild's snapshots for TestObjectLiteralProtoSetterEdgeCases and TestExportSpecialNameBundle:

function localShorthand(__proto__2, bar2) { { let __proto__3, bar3; console.log({ ["__proto__"]: __proto__3, bar: bar3 }); } }
function localNormal(__proto__2, bar2) { console.log({ __proto__: __proto__2, bar: bar2 }); }
__export(exports_lib, { ["__proto__"]: () => p, other: () => p });

Tests: test/bundler/transpiler/transpiler.test.js (printer output, destructuring defaults), test/bundler/transpiler/property.test.ts (runtime transpiler via bun -e), test/bundler/bundler_edgecase.test.ts (bundle and run, four minify variants, ESM and CJS imports, destructuring defaults, exports through import * as, --format=cjs, all four arms of the dev server hmr.exports literal, JSON named and namespace imports), test/bundler/esbuild/default.test.ts (esbuild's ExportSpecialNameBundle and ObjectLiteralProtoSetterEdgeCases), test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts (dev server exports, and the "use client" proxy module with a separate SSR graph), test/bake/dev/production.test.ts (client manifest of a production build). Also ran all of bundler_edgecase, bundler_minify, bundler_loader, bundler_cjs2esm, esbuild/default, esbuild/extra, esbuild/importstar, esbuild/ts, esbuild/dce, bake/dev/esm, and bake/dev/production.

Paths that need no change: binding patterns (print_binding) have no prototype-setter form. Methods and accessors named __proto__ define own properties in both the source and the output. __toESM, __toCommonJS and __reExport copy keys with Object.defineProperty, so they handle a __proto__ own property once the __export literal defines it. The getter variant of the dev server export lowering (get __proto__() {}) is an own accessor already. The JSX transform emits jsx("div", { __proto__: x }) for <div __proto__={x} />, the same as esbuild, TypeScript and Babel, and is left alone.

One behavior change outside __proto__: the UTF-16 key branch of print_property used to print a property as shorthand whenever WasShorthand was set, without comparing names. Both branches now share one check. A WasShorthand key is always UTF-8, so no output changes there.

…object literals

`{ __proto__: x }` sets the prototype of an object literal. `{ __proto__ }`
and `{ ["__proto__"]: x }` define an own property. The printer switched
between these forms like it does for any other key: it collapsed
`{ __proto__: __proto__ }` to shorthand and expanded a shorthand
`{ __proto__ }` to `__proto__: renamed` once the value was renamed or
inlined. The linker also used a plain `__proto__` key for an export with
that alias in the generated `__export(exports, { ... })` literal, so the
export became the prototype of that literal and vanished.

The printer now follows esbuild: a `__proto__` property is only printed
as shorthand if it was parsed as shorthand, and a shorthand `__proto__`
whose value no longer prints as `__proto__` becomes `["__proto__"]: x`.
The linker, the JSON named-export rewrite, and the dev server export
lowering mark a synthesized `__proto__` key as computed.

Status: ready for review. CI is green on every lane this change touches: build 113625 passed 180 of 181 jobs after merging current main.

Reproduced on the released binary with the three repros from the report (bun a.js, bun build --minify, export { p as __proto__ } through import * as ns, require() and --format=cjs), plus a JSON named import under --minify that dropped the __proto__ key. All four now match node. The PR body has the details.

The one red job in build 113625 is test/js/bun/http/serve-pending-promise-abort-leak.test.ts on the x64 ASAN lane (a Bun.serve stream GC check). It fails the same way on other open PRs and is unrelated to this change.

Supersedes #36120 and #33052.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs — pre-existing: server-component client-manifest object literal still uses a plain __proto__ key for an export named __proto__ — same bug class this PR fixes elsewhere (doStep5.rs, AstBuilder.rs, lower_esm_exports_hmr.rs) but this sibling site is left unpatched

    Extended reasoning...

    A React server component module with export const __proto__ = ... produces a client manifest inner object { __proto__: { name, specifier }, other: ... }; the __proto__ entry becomes the object's prototype instead of an own key, so the RSC runtime looking up manifest[clientPath]["__proto__"] reads Object.prototype (or the wrong object) and fails to resolve the reference — identical to the __export(exports, {...}) failure this PR fixes for the linker. Fix: compute flags: E::own_key_property_flags(&export_name) on the client_item property (and any other manifest property whose key is a bare export name) so a __proto__ export is emitted as ["__proto__"]:, matching every other synthesized-from-export-name site the PR converts.

    Verification: pre-existing — src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs is not in the diff, so merging makes nothing worse on this path, but REVIEW.md mandates "Fix the whole class in the same PR … Grep for every sibling site sharing the pattern", and this is exactly such a sibling. At src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3589-3640, the server-components client-manifest builder iterates named_exports_array[*source_id].keys() and…

Fixed the client manifest site in 86989c6: the per-module entry of the server components client manifest (bundle_v2.rs) now marks a __proto__ export name computed with the same helper. A production build test in test/bake/dev/production.test.ts renders Object.keys of the ssrManifest entry: the released binary gives ["other"], this branch gives ["__proto__","other"].

The dev server builds its manifest at runtime in hmr-runtime-server.ts with client[exportName] = ..., which is plain JavaScript and not generated code, so it is out of scope here.

…__proto__ tests valid now that nested bindings keep their names

With two or more data files in one bundle, every hoisted "__proto__"
variable after the first is renamed, so the rebuilt default object has to
keep its computed key even without --minify. Cover JSON, TOML and YAML
namespaces in both modes.

Since #41286 a nested binding keeps its name unless it would capture a
reference, so the esbuild-ported ObjectLiteralProtoSetterEdgeCases test no
longer sees "__proto__2" for its nested locals. Accept either outcome as
long as the shorthand never prints as "__proto__: x", and give the
edgecase matrix two colliding top-level "__proto__" bindings so the
renamed-shorthand path is still exercised in every mode.

Merged main into this branch (it conflicted in doStep5.rs) and re-verified.

  • The conflict was the new __exportCjs(exports, getters, setters) block for lifted CommonJS modules. The resolution keeps it and applies the same computed-key rule to the setter literal, so a __proto__ export name is an own key of both objects.
  • New test edgecase/DataFilesNamespaceProtoKey (with and without minify): import * as ns of a .json, a .toml and a .yaml file that each have a top-level __proto__ key. With more than one such file in a bundle, every hoisted __proto__ variable after the first is renamed (__proto__2), so the rebuilt default object printed __proto__: __proto__2 and set the prototype even without --minify. A string value was dropped and a null value produced a null-prototype object. On 1.4.3 this test fails 8 of 9 assertions.
  • Since bundler: let a nested binding keep its name unless it would capture a reference #41286 a nested binding keeps its name unless it would capture a reference, so default/ObjectLiteralProtoSetterEdgeCases no longer sees __proto__2 for its nested locals. It now accepts either outcome as long as a shorthand never prints as __proto__: x. edgecase/ObjectLiteralProtoKeys* gains two files with colliding top-level __proto__ bindings, so the renamed-shorthand path still runs in every mode.

Verified with a debug build: bundler_edgecase.test.ts (193 tests), bundler_loader.test.ts, transpiler/transpiler.test.js, transpiler/property.test.ts, the __proto__ cases in esbuild/default.test.ts, bake/dev/esm.test.ts and bake/dev/production.test.ts, and ElideOddKeys in bundler_dynamic_import_dce.test.ts. Output for the repros matches esbuild: { ["__proto__"]: __proto__2, b } and __export(exports_a, { ["__proto__"]: () => __proto__, ... }).

Merged current main into this branch (no conflicts) and added two test cases from #42144, which made the same change at the synthesized export-key sites and is now closed in favor of this PR: default/ExportSpecialName (esbuild's TestExportSpecialName, next to the existing ExportSpecialNameBundle) and bun/loader-json-proto-key-imported-by-name (a JSON named import under --minify-identifiers alone). Both fail on 1.4.3-canary+f42e98025 and pass here, and the __proto__ cases in bundler_edgecase, esbuild/default, bundler_loader, transpiler, bake/dev/esm and bake/dev/production still pass after the merge.
