I reviewed this PR and the bug-hunting system found no issues. Because it redesigns CompressionStreamCoder's cross-thread ownership (refcounted → moved Box<Codec> + new __restore handoff), adds a Send PinnedArrayBuffer with VM-gated Drop, and recontracts write_u16 from memmove to non-overlapping slices across the FFI boundary, a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- Compression codec ownership:
codec.take()→ job →restore()round-trip vs. C++m_asyncCodecInFlightgating;Busyfallback if stepped without codec. write_u16overlap removal — callers pass JS-string chars vs. ArrayBuffer storage, and the two Rust callers (buffer.rsfill,Bun__encoding__writeUTF16) both fit that contract.bun_sys::osRAII wrappers —sockaddr_dlbounds now clamped tosdl_len; nullifa_netmaskhandled; netmask family-stamping ordering ruled out.PinnedArrayBuffer::Dropany-VM check andencode_latin1_intorewrite — both examined and ruled out.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR continues the unsafe-removal programme across six runtime modules (node_os, CompressionStreamCoder, encoding, TextEncoder, TextDecoder, TextEncoderStreamEncoder), reducing their combined unsafe count from ~190 to 2. It does so by introducing safe RAII wrappers in bun_sys::os (getifaddrs, host_processor_info, uv_cpu_info/uv_interface_addresses, getpwuid_r), owned streaming codec types in bun_zlib/bun_brotli/bun_zstd that write into spare capacity, a PinnedArrayBuffer for off-thread ArrayBuffer reads, a JSString::visit<V: StringVisitor> trait, HOST_EXPORT codegen support for &mut [T] and SinkHandle params, and assorted append helpers in base64/simdutf/strings. The C++ side gains CompressionStreamCoder__restore and an updated deliverAsync signature.
Security risks
No new attack surface — this refactors existing FFI paths into safe wrappers. The sockaddr_dl MAC-address read is now bounds-checked against sdl_len (fixing a pre-existing OOB read/panic on macOS for long interface names). The write_u16 change removes memmove semantics; if any caller ever passed overlapping buffers, that would now be UB via copy_from_slice, but the PR documents (and the C++ declarations now state) that source is always JS-string characters and dest is ArrayBuffer storage.
Level of scrutiny
High. The CompressionStreamCoder change is not a mechanical refactor: it replaces ThreadSafeRefCounted (cell + async ctx each hold a ref) with a single owned Box<Codec> that moves out of the coder into the async job and back via restore. This changes what happens on VM teardown mid-job (previously the ctx's ref kept the coder alive; now the job owns the codec and the coder holds None), and adds a new C++/Rust handoff. PinnedArrayBuffer is a new Send type whose Drop releases pin/protect only if a VM exists on the dropping thread. Both are cross-thread lifetime designs that deserve maintainer eyes.
Other factors
The PR touches platform-gated code across linux/macos/freebsd/windows, extends the HOST_EXPORT codegen (which affects every future &mut [T]/SinkHandle export), and rewrites encode_latin1_into's algorithm. Test coverage is extensive per the PR description (ASAN debug builds across os/encoding/compression/buffer suites, plus rust-check-all cross-compile), and two candidate issues raised by finder agents were verified and refuted. But at 24 files with concurrency/FFI/ABI redesign, this is well outside the "simple, mechanical, obvious" bar for auto-approval.

I reviewed this PR and the bug-hunting pass found no issues; both nits I raised earlier (the AF_UNSPEC netmask copy size and the stale m_coder comment) were addressed. Given the scope — a new off-thread ArrayBuffer pinning type, the CompressionStreamCoder refcount→Box ownership redesign with a C++ hand-back path, several new unsafe impl Sends, and platform-gated syscall wrappers across four OSes — a human look is still warranted.
What was reviewed:
PinnedArrayBufferlifecycle: pin rejects shared/resizable, protect/unprotect paired, Drop is JS-thread-gated;FfiSlicenever re-forms&[u8]over pinned storage.- Codec ownership:
transform_asyncmoves theCodecout anddeliverAsyncrestores it before consuming output; them_asyncCodecInFlightguard on the C++ side still serializes steps. bun_sys::os: RAII drops (freeifaddrs,vm_deallocateword→byte fix,uv_free_*) pair with their allocations;sockaddr_dlMAC read is now bounded bysdl_len.- Spare-capacity append helpers commit only the bytes the codec/simdutf reports, and the hex/latin1 paths write via
MaybeUninit— no uninit reads.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR continues the unsafe-reduction programme across ~27 files: it introduces bun_sys::os (RAII wrappers over getifaddrs, host_processor_info, libuv's CPU/interface lists, getpwuid_r), owned streaming codec types in bun_zlib/bun_brotli/bun_zstd that write into Vec spare capacity, a PinnedArrayBuffer + FfiSlice mechanism for feeding pinned JS-owned bytes to off-thread codecs without forming a Rust reference, a JSString::visit trait for rope iteration, and safe append helpers for hex/base64/simdutf/latin1→utf16. It converts the six webcore encoding/compression files' C exports to HOST_EXPORT codegen (extending the generator for &mut [T] and SinkHandle params), and redesigns CompressionStreamCoder's ownership from ThreadSafeRefCounted to a plain Box whose inner Codec is moved into off-thread steps and returned via a new CompressionStreamCoder__restore C++ hand-back.
Security risks
No new attack surface. The changes are internal refactoring of existing FFI paths; input validation (compressed-stream trailing-junk, decode bounds) is preserved. The FfiSlice::from_raw constructor is unsafe and its only caller (PinnedArrayBuffer::ffi_slice) documents the pin+protect invariant. The write_u16 non-overlap contract that was previously implicit is now documented on both the Rust fn and the C++ declarations.
Level of scrutiny
High. This touches memory-safety-critical code: several new unsafe impl Send (each justified by "plain heap state, only reached via &mut self"), a GC-interaction type whose Drop conditionally leaks off the JS thread, an ownership-model change coordinated across Rust and C++ with a new FFI entry point, and platform-gated syscall wrappers with per-OS pointer arithmetic (sockaddr_dl, sa_len-bounded netmask copies, Mach vm_deallocate). While the diff is largely mechanical unsafe→safe migration and the author reports comprehensive ASAN test coverage, the CompressionStreamCoder redesign and PinnedArrayBuffer are genuine design changes a maintainer should sign off on.
Other factors
The author addressed all five prior review threads (CodeRabbit's vm_deallocate unit fix and ZSTD_e_end naming; my netmask-copy sizing and stale-comment nits; the PinnedArrayBuffer aliasing discussion). Test coverage is stated as extensive (ASAN across os/encoding/compression/buffer/zlib suites plus hand-driven byte-identical checks against system bun on all codec formats). No outstanding unresolved threads. The last author comment is a self-note ("Fix clippy") followed by the two most recent commits.

node_os.rs, CompressionStreamCoder.rs, encoding.rs, TextDecoder.rs,
TextEncoder.rs and TextEncoderStreamEncoder.rs no longer contain unsafe
blocks; the FFI they needed moves into typed primitives one layer down:
- bun_sys::os: owning wrappers for getifaddrs(3), host_processor_info,
getpwuid_r, getloadavg and the libuv cpu/interface/uname/uptime/homedir
calls, lending typed entries and net::Address values
- bun_zlib::{DeflateEncoder,InflateDecoder}::step_into_spare,
bun_brotli::{EncoderStream,DecoderStream}, bun_zstd::{CompressStream,
DecompressStream}: one codec call into a Vec's spare capacity with an
output limit
- bun_jsc: PinnedArrayBuffer (pinned + protected bytes for a pool job),
external_string_utf16, JSString::visit with a StringVisitor trait
- bun_simdutf utf16->utf8 le_append, bun_base64 encode_url_safe_append /
decode_lenient_append
- generate-host-exports: `&mut [T]` and `SinkHandle` parameters, so the
C++-called entry points are HOST_EXPORTs over safe signatures
CompressionStreamCoder is now a Box owned by the C++ cell; an off-thread
step takes the codec state by value and hands it back through
Bun__CompressionStream__deliverAsync -> CompressionStreamCoder__restore,
so no refcount is shared across threads. On macOS the interface MAC is
read from the full sockaddr_dl (long interface names no longer index past
sdl_data), and a null ifa_netmask reads as an all-zero mask like libuv.
Buffer.from(str, 'hex' | 'ucs2') and TextDecoder('latin1') were
zero-filling their output before overwriting it; add
strings::decode_hex_append, strings::append_latin1_as_utf16_bytes and
strings::cp1252_to_utf16_alloc so those paths write once again, and
spell out on the encoder entry points that string characters and
ArrayBuffer storage never alias.
…f-thread - decode_hex_append and the hex decoders write through MaybeUninit<u8> slots (highway wrappers take MaybeUninit destinations); cp1252_to_utf16_alloc is a plain collect. No &mut [u8]/&mut [u16] is formed over uninitialized memory. - PinnedArrayBuffer refuses shared and resizable buffers and no longer lends a &[u8]: a pool job copies the bytes out under its ticket (to_vec, raw copy), since JS on the owning thread may still store into the buffer. The compression job takes that snapshot on the pool thread. - macOS: vm_deallocate the host_processor_info buffer by its byte length. - zstd: name ZSTD_e_end.
The zlib/brotli/zstd step APIs take a bun_core::ffi::FfiSlice input (gains from_raw/skip/take/copy_to/to_vec), and PinnedArrayBuffer lends the pinned bytes as an FfiSlice under the job's ticket instead of copying them, so an off-thread step reads the ArrayBuffer directly as main did — without ever forming a &[u8] over memory JS may still be writing. Shared and resizable buffers are still copied on the JS thread.
getifaddrs on the BSDs reports netmasks whose own sa_family is AF_UNSPEC and whose sa_len may be short; sizing the copy by the mask's family kept only 16 bytes of an IPv6 mask. Copy size_of the entry's address family (bounded by sa_len on macOS/FreeBSD, zero tail) and tag it with that family, as libuv does.
…ned_utf16_into_js, encode_append_impl
…orage; FfiSlice::copy_to uses memmove; tie JobPinnedArrayBuffer::ffi_slice to the ticket borrow; os.networkInterfaces: alias interfaces take the base interface MAC
…ng: write_u16 doc names every caller behind the non-overlap contract
