Problem

  • test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts takes 8 to 10 s on every release lane and 16 s on ASAN. The cost is fixed: 47 fixture processes, one per case, each paying bun startup plus a 100 ms setTimeout before process.exit, and three 1 s dead-port probes.

Fix

  • The standard fixture is now an in-process Bun.serve (serveFixture), started in beforeAll and stopped in afterAll, as fetch-http3-client.test.ts already does. withServer(fn) stays as a shim, so the case bodies do not move. The template string, its stdin protocol and the PORT= parsing are gone. 47 spawns become 13.
  • The spawned custom fixtures exit right after server.stop(true), which sends CONNECTION_CLOSE synchronously. A port-reuse stress passes 30/30 this way and fails 5/5 with SIGKILL (Notes). withCustomServer awaits that exit and asserts exit code 0.
  • describe.concurrent on the basic, lifecycle and production blocks. The three dead-port probes are test.serial, so no other fixture can bind the port they probe. The adversarial block stays sequential on purpose: it floods one connection.
  • Assertions check full responses (status, headers, exact bytes by md5) and rejection names. Same machine and build: release 9.9 s → 4.0 s, debug+ASAN 77 s → 20 s. 12 release and 10 ASAN runs green.

Background

  • A spawned fixture stops when its stdin closes: it runs server.stop(true), which sends QUIC CONNECTION_CLOSE, so the test's pooled HTTP/3 session is dropped instead of retransmitting to a dead port a later fixture may get.
  • A dead-port probe is a request that must fail. The QUIC client never fails fast on a dead UDP port, so the probe keeps its 1 s abort.
Notes

Measurements (this machine, release = USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test, debug = bun bd test, same build before and after):

before after
release wall time 9.9 s 3.9 to 4.0 s (12 runs)
debug + ASAN wall time 74 to 77 s 19.5 to 19.8 s (10 runs)
fixture processes (release, ASAN case skipped) 47 13
fixture processes (debug) 48 14
CI, build 103647: linux release lanes (x64 and aarch64, glibc and musl) 8 to 10 s 3.8 to 3.9 s
CI, build 103647: darwin x64 and aarch64 8 to 10 s 4.1 s and 3.9 s
CI, build 103647: windows 2019 x64 and windows 11 aarch64 8 to 10 s 4.2 s and 4.5 s
CI, build 103647: debian 13 x64-asan 16.0 s 5.6 s

Spawn counts come from a temporary copy of the file that wrapped Bun.spawn with a counter. After the change the 13 are: 9 withCustomServer scripts and 4 one-off Bun.spawn cases (3 validation, 1 natural exit). Debug adds the ASAN-only abort storm. The /spawn route's child process is not a fixture and is not counted (before, the fixture process spawned it; now the test process does).

Where the 9.9 s went before: 43 fixture-backed cases at about 140 ms each (about 100 ms of that is the setTimeout(..., 100) before process.exit, the rest bun startup and the process.stdin hookup), plus 3 × 1 s dead-port probes, plus a 200 ms sleep in req.signal. After: the three serial dead-port probes are 3.2 s of the 4.0 s. Everything else is about 0.7 s.

In-process fixture. await server.stop(true) with the client's pooled session still open resolves in 0.1 ms (release) and 0.9 ms (debug); a graceful await server.stop() resolves in 0.1 ms and 6 ms. The comment in fetch-http3-client.test.ts:170 that says stop(true) would block on the pooled session draining does not match what the current server does. A native crash in the server now takes the test runner down instead of one fixture process; the crash output (or ASAN report) lands in the run's log under the case that was running, where before it went to a fixture stderr that nothing read. The http1: false case starts its own in-process serveFixture(dir, { http1: false }).

Why the 100 ms exit delay can go. Stress (stop(true) on stdin end, then a second fixture re-bound to the same port, then a non-retryable ReadableStream POST with a 3 s abort, 30 iterations): process.exit(0) right after stop(true): 0/30 failures. Natural exit (no process.exit): 0/30, the fixture exits in 1 to 5 ms. Negative control, SIGKILL instead of stdin end: 5/5 time out, which shows the stress detects a missing CONNECTION_CLOSE. The existing server.stop(true) sends CONNECTION_CLOSE on an idle H3 connection case relies on the same property, and there stop(true) and the re-bind happen in the same tick with no delay at all.

Concurrency. describe.concurrent on "Bun.serve HTTP/3", "lifecycle" and "production". Hazard considered: a case that asserts a request to port P fails (a dead-port probe) while another case's fixture binds a random ephemeral port could, with probability about 1/28k per concurrent bind, see that fixture on P. The three probes (url/address/stop, stop() ... does not UAF, graceful stop) are therefore test.serial; the runner finishes the concurrent group before a serial case starts and starts the next group after it. The HTTP/3 client opens a second connection when the pooled one has no stream credit (ClientContext::connect → has_headroom), so concurrent cases on the shared fixture multiplex or spill over, they do not fail. The adversarial block is sequential because 64 concurrent streams on one connection and the 8 MB POST are about one connection under load. A future case that breaks the connection on purpose (a QPACK or framing error that closes it) needs a server of its own, which the comment on the describe says.

/slow now sleeps 500 ms instead of 50 ms. The only case that requests it aborts at 10 ms, so the change costs nothing; it makes the abort timer win even if the concurrent group stalls the test's event loop for tens of milliseconds under ASAN. Three ASAN copies of the file run at once all passed, slowest case 2.4 s. --randomize (3 seeds) passes too.

Sleeps that stay: the 100 ms delayed-ACK wait and the 50 ms timer tick inside two lifecycle fixtures (they are the scenario), the 5 ms stream pacing and 20 ms client throttle in the stream cases, the 2 s abort on the post-restart POST, and the 1 s grace before SIGKILL that withCustomServer now uses only after a case has already failed.

Assertion changes: basic GET (content-type), large response (status, content-type, content-length, md5 of all 512 KB instead of two 16-byte samples), client abort (TimeoutError, full follow-up), http1:false (status, x-proto, ConnectionRefused), maxRequestBodySize (empty 413 body), per-method routes (200 and 404), ReadableStream body (status, content-type), Bun.file body and file route (status, content-type, content-length, md5, content-range and content-length on the 206), static route (content-type, etag and empty body on the 304), 8 MB POST (status, x-len), HEAD (content-type), lying content-length and client RST (full follow-up), subprocess stdout (status, content-type, exact 40040-byte body), Bun.file stream and 2 MB file (status, content-length, md5 of the expected pattern), Alt-Svc (exact h3=":PORT"; ma=86400), upgrade (status), req.signal (AbortError, exactly 1 abort, awaited HANGING/ABORTED lines instead of a 200 ms sleep and a 60 × 50 ms poll). Every custom fixture must now exit 0 on stdin end.

Rebase onto #40137 (HTTP/2 support). That commit added three routes to the standard fixture (/hop-headers, /static-hop, /file-hop), a connection-specific response headers are dropped case, and renamed H3ResponseSink to HTTPSResponseSink in comments and one case name. The routes are ported into serveFixture (Bun.file(bigFile) in place of process.env.BIG_FILE); the new case uses withServer unchanged and runs against the shared fixture. On a debug build of the rebased branch: 53 pass in 21 to 23 s, four runs.

Relation to #39068. That PR moves the spawned fixtures from process.stdin to Bun.stdin.stream() to cut about 1 s of debug-build startup per fixture, and keeps the 100 ms exit delay inside its new helper. The two PRs conflict on the STOP_ON_STDIN_END line and on the standard fixture template, which this PR deletes. Whichever lands second rebases: the Bun.stdin.stream() change still helps the 9 custom fixtures that remain spawned, and the 100 ms delay should stay dropped for the reason above.

Walkthrough

The HTTP/3 tests now use a shared in-process fixture, native fetch requests, deterministic teardown, stronger response integrity checks, and expanded lifecycle, abort, routing, header, and connection coverage.

Lifecycle, abort, and protocol validation
test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts
Connection-sensitive cases use serial execution. Custom-server cleanup awaits graceful process exit and forces termination only after bounded shutdown. Abort synchronization, protocol headers, and upgrade status have explicit assertions.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. It's a substantial (~350-line) test-infrastructure refactor — shared fixture across concurrent cases, removal of the 100 ms exit delay, describe.concurrent with interspersed test.serial barriers, and every custom fixture now required to exit 0 naturally on stdin end — so a human look and green CI across all lanes would be worthwhile before landing.

What was reviewed:

  • test.serial semantics inside describe.concurrent — verified against concurrent-and-serial.fixture.ts / concurrent.test.ts that the concurrent batch drains before a serial case starts.
  • startServer's listening.reject after stream EOF — no-op once resolved, so stderrDone never rejects; tempDir is disposed on both the early-exit and stop() paths.
  • The url/address/stop custom fixture has no STOP_ON_STDIN_END and now must exit naturally for expect(await proc.exited).toBe(0) — it's h3-only after server.stop(), which the natural-exit test in the same file covers.
  • Assertion tightening (md5 over full bodies, exact rejection names, waitForStderr(/HANGING|ABORTED/) replacing the 200 ms sleep + poll) strictly strengthens what was there.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Test-only refactor of test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts (~350 lines changed, one file). Four independent changes: (1) most withServer cases now share one fixture process for the file, started on first use and stopped in afterAll, cutting 47 spawns to 15; (2) the fixture's 100 ms setTimeout before process.exit is dropped, justified by us_quic_listen_socket_close sending CONNECTION_CLOSE synchronously and a 30/30 stress with a 5/5 negative control; (3) three of the four describe blocks become describe.concurrent, with the three dead-port probes marked test.serial so no other fixture can bind the probed port; (4) assertions tightened across the board (status/content-type/content-length/content-range/etag headers, full-body md5, exact rejection .name/.code, and the req.signal case rewritten to await stderr markers instead of sleeping and polling).

Security risks

None. Test-only; no runtime code touched. The fixture servers bind port: 0 on loopback with in-tree TLS material and take no external input.

Level of scrutiny

Medium-high. It's test-only, so runtime correctness is unaffected, but the file's flake-resistance is exactly what the change targets, and the change depends on several non-obvious properties: kernel loopback delivery ordering after stop(true), test.serial acting as a barrier inside describe.concurrent (verified against the runner's own concurrent-and-serial fixture snapshot), the H3 client multiplexing concurrent requests over one pooled connection without cross-stream interference, and every custom-script fixture (including the url/address/stop one that has no STOP_ON_STDIN_END) exiting naturally with code 0 on stdin end. Each is argued in the description with empirical evidence from one machine; CI across Linux/macOS/ASAN lanes is the real proof.

Other factors

  • withCustomServer's success path now expect(await proc.exited).toBe(0) with no timeout race — a fixture that hangs on stdin end will now hang the test instead of being killed after 1 s. This is intentional tightening but shifts the failure mode.
  • The shared fixture couples cases: an abort or malformed request in one concurrent case that leaves the pooled connection in a bad state would fail unrelated cases. The adversarial block is deliberately kept sequential for this reason; the basic block's cases are read-only enough that this seems safe.
  • /slow now sleeps 500 ms server-side; only the 10 ms-abort case hits it, so it costs nothing but leaves a 500 ms handler running in the shared fixture during the concurrent batch (harmless, it's async).
  • CI (#103535) was still building when this review ran; a maintainer should confirm all lanes are green before merging, since 12 release + 10 ASAN local runs on one machine don't cover platform-specific timing.

Given the scope of the concurrency and lifetime changes and the reliance on empirically-verified-but-subtle timing properties, deferring to a human reviewer who knows this suite's flake history.

Use Buffer.alloc for the repeated fixture string.

This test evaluates 'x'.repeat(1000) inside the write loop. Build the chunk once with Buffer.alloc(1000, "x").toString() to reduce allocations in debug builds.

As per coding guidelines, test files must use Buffer.alloc(count, fill).toString() instead of "string".repeat(count) for repetitive strings.

Review follow-ups, both in this file only:

  • c215a48: withCustomServer now awaits the stderr drain before the exit-code assertion and attaches the fixture's stderr to it.
  • 7cdd912: the /spawn child builds its 1000-byte line once with Buffer.alloc(1000, 'x') instead of 'x'.repeat(1000) in the loop, per the test style guide.

The file still runs in 4.0 s on the release build and 19.8 s on the debug+ASAN build here, 52 pass.

CI status for 7cdd912 (build 103647): serve-http3.test.ts passes on all 9 lanes, 52 tests each. Wall time per lane: linux release 3.8 to 3.9 s, darwin 3.9 to 4.1 s, windows 4.2 to 4.5 s, debian x64-asan 5.6 s (16.0 s before this PR).

The build itself is red because of test/js/node/child_process/child_process_ipc_handle.test.ts on alpine x64, which also fails on main and is unrelated to this change. The other annotated failures passed on retry. Ready for review.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. It's a well-argued, well-verified test refactor, but it makes a couple of judgment calls a maintainer should sign off on: trading per-test process isolation for a shared in-process H3 fixture (a native crash now takes the runner down), adding describe.concurrent across three blocks with test.serial carve-outs, and dropping the 100 ms post-stop(true) exit delay. It also has a stated merge conflict with #39068 that needs coordination.

What was reviewed:

  • The in-process serveFixture and beforeAll/afterAll lifecycle — matches the fetch-http3-client.test.ts pattern; withServer shim keeps case bodies unchanged.
  • Concurrency: test.serial on the three dead-port probes so no concurrent fixture can bind the probed port; adversarial block stays sequential.
  • withCustomServer teardown: success path now awaits exit and asserts code 0 with buffered stderr; failure path still bounded-then-SIGKILL.
  • Tightened assertions (status/headers/md5, exact rejection names) and the req.signal case's switch from sleep+poll to awaited HANGING/ABORTED stderr lines.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Single-file test refactor of test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts (~530 lines changed). The standard fixture moves from a per-test spawned process (template-string script + stdin protocol + PORT= parsing) to an in-process Bun.serve created in beforeAll and stopped in afterAll. Three describe blocks become describe.concurrent with the three dead-port-probe cases marked test.serial; the adversarial block stays sequential. STOP_ON_STDIN_END drops its 100 ms post-stop(true) delay. withCustomServer now awaits the fixture's exit on the success path and asserts exit code 0 with the full buffered stderr. Assertions across the file are tightened to check status, content-type, content-length, exact bytes via md5, and specific rejection names. The req.signal case replaces a 200 ms sleep and a 60×50 ms poll with awaited stderr lines.

Security risks

None. Test-only change; no production code, no new dependencies, no network egress beyond loopback.

Level of scrutiny

Medium. Test-only, but the change is large and shifts two structural properties of the suite: (1) process isolation — a native crash in the shared H3 server now takes the test runner down instead of one fixture (the PR acknowledges the trade-off: crash output lands in the run log under the running case, whereas before it went to an unread fixture stderr); (2) concurrency — cases now multiplex over one pooled QUIC connection with test.serial carve-outs for dead-port probes. Both are carefully reasoned and stress-tested locally (12 release + 10 ASAN runs, 30-iteration port-reuse stress with a SIGKILL negative control, 3 concurrent ASAN copies, --randomize on 3 seeds), but they are the kind of test-architecture judgment calls a maintainer typically owns, and CI environments can differ from local stress.

Other factors

  • The PR explicitly conflicts with #39068 on STOP_ON_STDIN_END and the standard fixture template; whichever lands second must rebase, and this PR's removal of the 100 ms delay should survive. That coordination needs a human.
  • The concurrency-safety argument leans on HTTP/3 client internals (ClientContext::connect → has_headroom opening a second connection when the pooled one is out of stream credit). Someone familiar with that code should confirm it holds under CI load.
  • CodeRabbit's one finding (attach stderr to the exit-code assertion) was addressed in c215a48; the other two points were correctly declined. The bug hunting system found nothing.

CI status for the current head 213f998 (build 107004, finished): serve-http3.test.ts passes on every lane where its shard ran, 53 tests each: linux release 3.8 to 4.5 s, windows x64 4.0 s, windows aarch64 4.5 s, darwin aarch64 5.8 s, debian x64-asan 5.8 s. Its darwin x64 shard did not run in this build because that job failed before the tests started (failed to git clone vendor 'elysia': timeout); it passed there in build 103647 (4.1 s) with the same in-process fixture.

The build is red because of tests this change does not touch, all reported to main-break triage: test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts and test/cli/run/require-cache.test.ts (leak checks on the ASAN lane) and test/js/web/url/url.test.ts (darwin x64, also fails on main). The other annotated failures passed on retry or alone. Ready for review.

LGTM — both earlier nits are addressed (afterAll now optional-chains and wraps disposal in try/finally; the http1: false TCP probe is test.serial like the other dead-port probes).

Checked the reworked withCustomServer teardown: the success path awaits proc.exited unbounded and asserts exit 0 with buffered stderr, and the failure path still does the bounded stdin-end/kill dance before rethrowing — no path leaks the process or swallows the original error. The req.signal case now awaits HANGING/ABORTED stderr lines instead of sleeping, and asserts exactly "1" rather than > 0. The md5-vs-module-constant assertions and tightened .rejects.toMatchObject({ name/code }) all match the payloads the in-process fixture actually serves.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

Test-only refactor of test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts (~800 diff lines, single file). The per-test spawned server.mjs fixture becomes one in-process Bun.serve() started in beforeAll/stopped in afterAll, mirroring the existing pattern in fetch-http3-client.test.ts. Three describe blocks go describe.concurrent with dead-port probes marked test.serial; withCustomServer's teardown is split into a failure path (bounded stdin-end → kill → rethrow) and a success path (unbounded await proc.exited + assert exit 0). Assertions are tightened throughout: bare .rejects.toThrow() → .toMatchObject({ name/code }), substring spot-checks → md5 against module-scope BIG_BODY/BIG_FILE_BYTES/HUGE_FILE_BYTES, toContain → exact toBe on Alt-Svc, and the req.signal abort test replaces sleep(200) + a 60-iteration poll with waitForStderr(/HANGING|ABORTED/).

Security risks

None. This touches only a test file — no runtime code, no auth/crypto/permissions surface. The fixture binds port: 0 on loopback with the harness's self-signed TLS material and never contacts external hosts.

Level of scrutiny

Moderate for a test refactor of this size, focused on the review-guide flake vectors: sleeps replaced by awaited conditions, resource cleanup on every path, concurrent-vs-serial hazards, and assertion strength. I raised two nits on earlier pushes (unsafe afterAll ordering; a dead-port probe not marked test.serial); commits 16d9f21f and 213f9983 fix both exactly as suggested. I re-read the full diff after those commits and found nothing further — the success-path withCustomServer now awaits exit and asserts exitCode === 0 with stderr in the failure message, the failure path rethrows the original error, and every test.serial has a one-line justification per REVIEW.md.

Other factors

No production code changes, so no USE_SYSTEM_BUN invariant to check. The PR description documents 12 release + 10 ASAN green runs plus CI build 103647 timings across all lanes, and explicitly reasons through the in-process-vs-subprocess isolation tradeoff (crashes now surface in the test runner's own log under the running case). The three CodeRabbit inline threads were resolved by a non-author. No outstanding CHANGES_REQUESTED reviews.
