sql: fire onclose only for pool connections that completed their handshake - #39945
Conversation
A pool-initiated close killed pending slots whose handshake never completed and still invoked the user's onclose callback, so close() fired onclose once per configured pool slot instead of once per connection that fired onconnect. Fixes #39940

… cycle doRetry() reset the per-cycle state but kept the onConnectFired flag, so a close() that landed during a reconnect handshake fired onclose for a cycle whose onconnect never fired.

handleConnectedsets this flag unconditionally at line 662, even whenconnectionInfo?.onconnectis undefined. In that case no callback exists to fire, so the comment overstates what happened.Setting the flag unconditionally is correct: it must not depend on whether
onconnectis registered, or connections that succeed but only have anonclosehandler would never get notified on pool-initiated close. Update the comment to describe the actual invariant, for example: "indicates the connect cycle for this slot completed (successfully or with an error); the user'sonconnectcallback runs first if one is configured."As per coding guidelines,

The earlier finding (stale onConnectFired flag surviving into a reconnect cycle) is addressed in 64e2674 — doRetry() now clears it, and a scripted-backend test pins the close-mid-reconnect case. No new issues found on this pass.
Because this changes user-visible onclose semantics (an existing test's assertion was inverted — forced close of a mid-handshake slot now skips onclose), a human sign-off on the API contract would still be worthwhile.

doRetry()now clears the flag alongside the other per-cycle resets, and thatlisteningServer/pgAuthenticationOk/pgReadyForQueryexist inwire-frames.ts. - Checked that the
onFinish !== nullgate is a reliable pool-initiated-close marker (only#close()sets it).
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches src/js/internal/sql/shared.ts (the shared postgres/mysql pool) plus three test files. It adds a PooledConnectionFlags.onConnectFired bit that is set in handleConnected(), cleared in doRetry(), and consulted in #finishClose to skip the user's onclose callback when a pool-initiated close (onFinish !== null) tears down a slot whose handshake never completed. Fixes #39940 where close() fired onclose once per configured max slot regardless of how many actually connected.
Prior feedback
My previous review flagged that doRetry() did not clear the new flag, so a slot that connected once and was redialing would carry the stale bit into the next cycle. That was fixed in 64e2674 with a dedicated test (postgres: close() mid-reconnect does not fire onclose for the unfinished cycle). The github-actions comment-cop feedback about a paragraph-long inline comment was addressed in e0d8a5e by folding the condition into a named variable poolClosedSlotBeforeOnconnect. All prior threads are resolved.
Security risks
None. This is JS-side pool bookkeeping; no parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto/permission surface.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. The mechanical change is small and well-tested (fails on stock bun, passes with the fix, both drivers covered, plus a real-postgres integration assertion in sql.test.ts). However, this is a user-facing semantic change to when onclose fires: an existing test in sql-onconnect-onclose-throw.test.ts had its assertion inverted — forced close of a mid-handshake slot previously fired onclose (with a CONNECTION_CLOSED error) and now does not. The PR also deliberately leaves the refused-connection / timeout path firing onclose without a paired onconnect, so the pairing invariant is scoped to pool-initiated close() only. That's a defensible design (and existing tests pin it), but it's a judgment call about the callback contract that a maintainer should confirm.
Other factors
I re-traced the paths after the follow-up commits: the cancelRetry() branch in #close() (backoff-parked slot) sets state to closed without calling #finishClose, so neither callback fires there — still paired. The onFinish !== null predicate is only ever set inside #close(), so it reliably marks pool-initiated teardown. Test coverage is solid: mock-server tests for both drivers, a reconnect-cycle test, and a real-postgres count-equality test. Given the API-semantic aspect and the inverted existing test, I'm deferring rather than auto-approving.
Problem
sql.close()fires theonclosecallback once per configured pool slot (max), not once per connection that firedonconnect. Withmax: 30and 6 completed handshakes, the user sees{ opened: 6, closed: 30 }. Metrics that pair the two callbacks drift negative. Fixes Bun.SQL: close() fires onclose once per pool slot, including slots that never connected #39940.maxslots, and each slot begins its handshake at once.#close()insrc/js/internal/sql/shared.tsthen closes every pending slot, and#finishCloseinvoked the user'soncloseunconditionally, even for slots that never completed the handshake and never firedonconnect.Fix
PooledConnectionFlags.onConnectFired, set whenhandleConnectedruns (that is exactly when the user'sonconnectfires, with null or an error).#finishClosenow skips the user'sonclosewhen the close is pool-initiated (onFinishis set) and the flag is unset. The pool bookkeeping (query notification,onFinish, release) still runs, soclose()settles as before.close()(connection timeout, refused connection, spent retry budget) still reports throughonclose. Existing tests assert that behavior and they still pass.test/js/sql/sql-close-pending-connection.test.ts(both drivers, fails on stock bun with 5onclosecalls for 0 connections) andtest/js/sql/sql.test.ts(real postgres, onclosecount equalsonconnectcount). Also ran the fulltest/js/sql/suite.Background

Each slot is aBasePooledConnectionthat dials as soon as it is created.handleConnectedis the native handshake callback and fires the user'sonconnect.handleCloseis the native socket-close callback and funnels into#finishClose, which fires the user'sonclose.onFinishis set on a slot only by poolclose(). It resolves the promise thatclose()awaits. That makes it a reliable marker for a pool-initiated close.sql-onconnect-onclose-throw.test.tsasserted that a forcedclose()of a mid-handshake slot fires a throwingonclose. That slot never firedonconnect, so the fixture now assertsoncloseis not invoked andclose()still resolves.Notes

The pool's close path invoked the user's onclose callback for every allocated slot, including slots whose connections were still pending and had never completed the handshake or fired onconnect, so closed counts always matched the configured max. The fix records whether each pooled connection actually completed its onconnect cycle, resetting that marker on each reconnect attempt, and a pool initiated close of a slot that never reached onconnect now skips the onclose callback. As a result, onconnect and onclose pair up one to one for connections that were genuinely established, while pending…
