Problem

  • In a container process.on("memoryPressure") has no source. The PSI trigger needs write access to /proc/pressure/memory or the cgroup's memory.pressure, and a container has neither. PSI is also host-wide and says nothing about the container's own memory.max.

Fix

  • Watch the process's own cgroup v2 memory.events as a second source (memory_pressure.rs, mod cgroup). A read-only open is enough, and kernfs signals POLLPRI on each counter change, so it shares the PSI FilePoll path. low/high/max emit warning, oom* emit critical. PSI stays critical.
  • Holdoff: each level at most once per 2 s, no warning for 2 s after a critical. A cgroup at memory.max notifies on every reclaim pass. Each wakeup reads the file, because the read clears the notification. A failed read drops the source.
  • When the path from /proc/self/cgroup is missing under /sys/fs/cgroup (a container in the host's cgroup namespace), the mount root is used.
  • Verified: test/js/node/process/process-memory-pressure.test.ts, 8 pass, also with the ASAN lane's BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1 and leak detection. One test registers the real file in this read-only container, one drives the holdoff through a new hook with an explicit clock. Also clippy, cargo check for macOS, Windows, FreeBSD, and the source lints.

Background

  • cgroup v2 gives each non-root cgroup a memory.events file of monotonic counters: reclaim at memory.high and memory.max, reclaim below memory.low, OOM handling. Child cgroups are included.
  • kernfs is the filesystem behind cgroupfs. After kernfs_notify(), poll() returns EPOLLPRI | EPOLLERR until the file is read again. Flags::MemoryPressure already asks epoll for PRI.
  • The watcher holds one FilePoll per source. Neither keeps the event loop alive, and both enqueue a task instead of running JS from the poll callback.
Notes

Kernel references (v6.6): kernel/cgroup/cgroup.c cgroup_file_notify() coalesces to one notification per 10 ms (CGROUP_FILE_NOTIFY_MIN_INTV) with a timer so the last event is kept. fs/kernfs/file.c kernfs_generic_poll() returns EPOLLERR | EPOLLPRI while the open file's event count lags the node's. kernfs_seq_show() stores the count before it renders, so a read of any length re-arms. A removed kernfs file is reported ready forever, which is why a failed read drops the source. pread at offset 0 works on these seq files. Checked here with a small script: epoll_ctl with EPOLLPRI on memory.events succeeds, and the fd is not ready after a read.

on_poll tells the two sources apart by the FilePoll pointer, so there is no new poll tag. The cgroup poll never looks at EPOLLERR, which kernfs always sets together with PRI. The PSI path keeps its Eof/Hup check, and a dead PSI trigger now drops only its own source instead of the whole watcher.

The read of /proc/self/cgroup grew from 256 to 1024 bytes, and the path is resolved once for both files.

The watcher is now also released at VM teardown and at the bun test --isolate swap (jsc_hooks.rs, next to the fs.watchFile scheduler). Before, a watcher still installed at exit was never freed. The listeners it serves belong to the outgoing global and are never removed one by one. LeakSanitizer only reports that when the install did not happen during synchronous module evaluation, which test/leaksan.supp covers. The re-arm step of the holdoff test installs from an async continuation, and the ASAN lane reported it, so that lane now also guards the teardown.

Test hooks: memoryPressureArmedSources() replaces the boolean hook from #39654 and names the sources. memoryPressureInjectCgroupEvents(text, atMs) parses a file body. The first call on a source replaces the counters it read when it armed and starts the clock atMs is read on (state on the source itself, so a source set up later gets its own baseline, which the test covers by re-adding the listener). Each later call runs the same observe step a real wakeup runs after its pread. The injected counters sit far above anything the real file can hold, so a real notification during the test changes nothing. The holdoff steps accumulate like the real file, and two steps carry an unknown counter and malformed lines.

Not covered by a test: a real kernel notification end to end. That needs a writable cgroup with a memory limit (root, as in test/js/bun/spawn/spawn-cgroup.test.ts), which this environment does not have.

process.availableMemory() ignoring cgroup limits is a separate change.

Status: CI is green at 7558903 (build 101307, 179 jobs) and every review thread is resolved. Ready for a maintainer.

Verified with the debug build in this container: the read-only cgroup mount here is enough for first listener arms cgroup to register the real memory.events file, and the holdoff test drives the level mapping through memoryPressureInjectCgroupEvents(). The ASAN lane also runs the file with BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1 and leak detection, which is what caught the teardown release. A real kernel notification end to end needs a writable cgroup with a memory limit (root), which this environment does not have.

Base automatically changed from farm/6574f663/psi-trigger-nul to main August 19, 2026 13:53
The PSI trigger needs write access to /proc/pressure/memory or to the
cgroup's memory.pressure file. A container normally has neither, so
memoryPressure had no source there. The cgroup v2 memory.events file of
the process's own cgroup is readable on the read-only cgroup mount a
container gets, and kernfs signals POLLPRI on it each time one of its
counters moves.

Watch that file as a second source next to PSI. An increase of the low,
high or max counters (reclaim at a limit) is emitted as "warning", an
increase of the oom counters as "critical". The kernel coalesces the
notifications to one per 10 ms, and a cgroup that sits at memory.max
produces one per reclaim pass, so each level is emitted at most once per
2 s. A warning is also dropped for 2 s after a critical. Every wakeup
reads the file, because the read is what clears the kernfs notification.
A read that fails drops the source, since kernfs reports a removed file
as ready forever. A dead PSI trigger now also drops only its own source.

The cgroup lookup retries at the cgroup mount root when the path from
/proc/self/cgroup does not exist there, which is the layout of a
container that shares the host's cgroup namespace.

Test hooks: memoryPressureArmedSources() replaces the boolean hook and
names the sources the watcher holds. memoryPressureInjectCgroupEvents()
feeds a memory.events body to the installed source with an explicit
holdoff clock, so the level mapping and the holdoff are tested without
waiting and without a writable cgroup.

47615a9 addresses the review so far:

  • open_psi_fd opened both PSI candidates before it tried either, so the cgroup fd leaked whenever /proc/pressure/memory worked. It now opens the cgroup file only after the /proc file fails.
  • The first memoryPressureInjectCgroupEvents() call now sets the baseline, so the holdoff test does not depend on the counters in the real file. Its steps accumulate, so the second OOM step reaches the critical holdoff (removing that check fails the test), and two steps cover an unknown counter and malformed lines.
  • Types comment says where the PSI signal comes from. Comments shortened throughout.

Rebased onto main after #39654 merged, so this PR is the one commit on top of it.

A process-wide OnceLock decided whether an injection was the baseline,
so a source set up after the first injection (a new listener, or a
worker) never got a baseline of its own. The epoch now lives on
CgroupEvents. The test re-arms and injects again to cover it, and its
counters sit far above anything the real file can hold, so a real
notification between two steps cannot move the baseline.

e5149af and 9cc6da8: the injection hook keeps its baseline and clock on the CgroupEvents it drives instead of a process-wide static, the test re-adds the listener to cover a source set up later, and the injected counters are offset far above the real file so a real notification during the test cannot interfere. observe() is module-private again. Review threads are resolved.

Reject a truncated /proc/self/cgroup read.

detect reads at most 1024 bytes into read and then parses &read[..n]. strings::split yields the final fragment even when that fragment has no terminating newline. If the file is longer than the buffer, or the read is short, the 0:: line can be truncated and detect returns a partial path.

A partial path fails to open, so OwnCgroup::open silently falls back to /sys/fs/cgroup/{file} and Bun then watches the root cgroup instead of the process cgroup. The reported pressure is for the wrong cgroup.

A hybrid v1/v2 host can list many controller lines before the 0:: entry, so the buffer can fill. Require the matched line to be newline-terminated.

🛡️ Proposed fix
             let rest =
                 strings::split(&read[..n], b"\n").find_map(|line| line.strip_prefix(b"0::"))?;
+ // A filled buffer means the last line may be cut short, and a cut
+ // path would silently resolve to the root cgroup.
+            if n == read.len() && core::ptr::from_ref(rest).addr() + rest.len()
+                == core::ptr::from_ref(&read[..n]).addr() + n
+            {
+                return None;
+            }
             let rest = rest.strip_prefix(b"/").unwrap_or(rest);

A simpler form is to require read[..n] to contain a b'\n' after the matched line, for example by searching for the terminator before stripping the prefix.

Nothing removed the watcher when the VM went away: the listeners it
served belong to the outgoing global and are never removed one by one,
so the box stayed allocated. LeakSanitizer only reports it when the
install did not happen during synchronous module evaluation, which the
suppressions cover, and the new re-arm step in the holdoff test installs
from an async continuation. Release it from the same teardown hook that
retires the fs.watchFile scheduler, which also runs at the
bun test --isolate swap, so the next file starts without a watcher.

…rm and baseline

to_int32() on undefined reaches asInt32(), which asserts in debug builds.
The test now omits atMs on the baseline call after the re-arm, and the
re-arm step no longer yields to the event loop before that baseline, so
the new source cannot read the real file first.

Prevent overflow when aggregating counters.

Counters::parse sums three independently parsed u64 values into each u64 field. Two values near u64::MAX can overflow; debug builds panic, while release builds wrap and can hide later events. Use checked accumulation with an invalid-input path or store the aggregates as u128.

I reviewed this PR and the automated bug hunt found no issues in the current revision. All earlier review threads (fd leak in open_psi_fd, per-source injection epoch, holdoff-disjunct coverage, to_int32 on undefined, the re-arm/baseline yield window) have been addressed and resolved. Because this adds ~350 lines of native Linux-specific code with a new FilePoll source, unsafe watcher-slot access, and a new VM-teardown hook in jsc_hooks.rs, a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed

  • on_poll dispatch: cgroup vs PSI poll disambiguation by pointer, drop-source-on-read-failure ordering (watcher.cgroup = None then deinit_poll on the hive slot), and that a dead PSI trigger now drops only its own source.
  • release() frees both polls; shutdown_for_exit sits next to StatWatcherScheduler::shutdown_for_exit in cancel_all_timers, which runs at both VM teardown and the --isolate swap.
  • Counters::parse / level_of_change / observe holdoff logic against the test's step table, including the added 4 s/5 s pair covering the warning-arm's quiet(last_critical) disjunct.
  • js_inject_cgroup_events: get_number().unwrap_or(0.0) for the optional atMs, and injected_epoch living on CgroupEvents so re-arm gets its own baseline.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Adds a second Linux process.on("memoryPressure") source: the process's own cgroup v2 memory.events file, polled for POLLPRI via the existing FilePoll path. Reclaim counters (low/high/max) emit "warning", OOM counters emit "critical", with a 2 s per-level holdoff. The existing PSI trigger stays as "critical". Also: the watcher is now released at VM teardown / the bun test --isolate swap (jsc_hooks.rs), memoryPressureWatcherHasOsBackend() is replaced by memoryPressureArmedSources(), a new memoryPressureInjectCgroupEvents() test hook drives the holdoff with an explicit clock, and the docs in overrides.d.ts are updated. Tests add a 16-step holdoff table plus a real-source arm/disarm check.

Security risks

None identified. Inputs are kernel-generated files under /proc and /sys/fs/cgroup opened read-only (or O_RDWR for the PSI trigger, which was pre-existing). Path construction goes through bun_core::fmt::buf_print_z into fixed stack buffers with length checks. The only JS-facing input is the bun:internal-for-testing hook, which is not user-reachable in release builds.

Level of scrutiny

High. This is new native code with two FilePoll lifetimes on one dispatch tag, an unsafe watcher_mut returning an unbounded &mut into the type-erased RareData slot, kernel-behavior assumptions (kernfs re-arm on read, EPOLLPRI|EPOLLERR semantics, cgroup-namespace path fallback), and a new call site in the VM-teardown path. It is not a mechanical change. The end-to-end kernel-notification path is explicitly not covered by a test (needs a writable cgroup with a memory limit), so only the parsing/holdoff/arm-disarm layers are verified.

Other factors

The PR has been through four rounds of review; every prior finding (mine and the source-lint bot's) is resolved in the head commit 7558903. The bug-hunting system found nothing new on this revision. cargo check across macOS/Windows/FreeBSD and clippy were run per the description. Given the size, the unsafe surface, and the untested real-notification path, I'm deferring rather than approving.
