…ading-slash check URL::setPath decides whether to prepend "/" (and the "/." guard for a host-less URL) from the raw value and only removes tab/LF/CR when it reparses, so assigning "\n/evil.com/y" to the pathname of "foo:/a" reparsed as "foo://evil.com/y" and made evil.com the host; on http URLs "\t/x" became "//x". The basic URL parser removes those characters before any state runs, so remove them in the setter first.

Reproduced on Bun 1.4.0 with The two CI: the URL tests pass on every lane. The red entries on the last two builds are unrelated to this change and are reported on their own: |

LGTM — small spec-compliance fix that strips tab/LF/CR in the pathname setter before URL::setPath inspects the leading slash, matching the URL Standard's basic-parser step 2 and Node.
What was reviewed
- Verified the single caller (
JSDOMURL.cpp:533) already passes aStringfromconvert<IDLUSVString>, so theStringView→const String&signature change binds cleanly and mirrorssetSearch. - Checked the sibling setters the PR claims are unaffected:
search/hashstrip their leading sentinel from the raw value per spec, andparsePortalready skips these characters explicitly. - Test is a 19-row table covering tab/LF/CR × special/non-special/file schemes, the
/.guard, and the strips-to-empty case; robobun confirmed 16/19 rows fail on 1.4.0 and all pass with the fix.

Overview
The PR changes URLDecomposition::setPathname to strip ASCII tab (U+0009), LF (U+000A), and CR (U+000D) from the incoming value before handing it to WTF::URL::setPath. The signature moves from StringView to const String& so it can call String::removeCharacters (which returns the same string unallocated when nothing matches). A 19-row table test is added to test/js/web/url/url.test.ts with expected values taken from Node.
Security risks
None introduced. The change actually closes a mild host-confusion vector: on a non-special-scheme URL with no host, u.pathname = "\n/evil.com/y" previously reparsed as foo://evil.com/y, promoting a path segment into the authority. After the fix Bun matches the URL Standard and Node (foo:/evil.com/y, empty host). The three characters stripped are exactly the set the WHATWG basic URL parser removes before any state runs, so no new normalization is invented.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-medium. The diff is four lines of implementation plus a header signature tweak in a WebCore-derived binding file. The mechanism is well-explained (WTF URL::setPath decides whether to prepend / and the /. guard from the raw value, then reparses — only the reparse strips tab/newline, so a leading \n produced a spurious extra /). WebKit is a prebuilt dependency here, so patching at the setter is the correct layer. The only caller in JSDOMURL.cpp already produces a String, and the pattern matches the existing setSearch(const String&).
Other factors
The PR addresses the "fix the whole class" review guideline by explaining why the sibling setters are not affected (search/hash strip their leading ?/# from the raw value by spec; host/hostname/port/protocol/username/password already match Node with a leading tab — parsePort even has an explicit tab/newline skip). robobun independently reproduced both failure modes on 1.4.0 and confirmed the new test discriminates (16/19 rows fail before, all pass after) and that test/js/web/url/, test/js/web/urlpattern/, and the vendored test-whatwg-url-* Node tests still pass. The test lives in the existing suite file per repo conventions and asserts exact href/host/pathname values.

setHost counted the port digits in the raw value, so a tab after the colon dropped or truncated the port, and a value that is only tab or newline skipped the empty-value no-op in both setters and reparsed http:///p with the first path segment as the host.

LGTM — both prior review points are addressed (setHost/setHostname now share the same strip, and the test tables name the Node version they were checked against).
What was reviewed:
- The three setters strip tab/LF/CR via a shared
removeTabAndNewlinebefore any raw-value inspection; matches URL Standard step 3. - Signature change
StringView→const String&— the only caller (JSDOMURL.cpp) already passes aStringfromconvert<IDLUSVString>, same assetSearch. - 33 test rows checked against Node 26; the remaining setter divergences listed in the description reproduce without whitespace and are correctly out of scope.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Three URL component setters (setHost, setHostname, setPathname) in src/jsc/bindings/URLDecomposition.cpp now remove ASCII tab, LF and CR from the input before inspecting it, via a shared removeTabAndNewline helper that wraps String::removeCharacters. The header changes three signatures from StringView to const String& so removeCharacters is available. Two test.each tables (19 + 14 rows) in test/js/web/url/url.test.ts cover the fix.
Security risks
The change closes a URL-confusion vector rather than opening one: before the fix, new URL("foo:/a").pathname = "\n/evil.com/y" promoted evil.com to the host, and new URL("http://h/p").host = "\t" made the first path segment the host. removeCharacters is a standard WTF helper that returns the same string unchanged when nothing matches, so no new allocation or parsing surface is introduced on the common path. No auth, crypto, or permissions code is touched.
Level of scrutiny
Medium. This is a focused spec-compliance fix in the URL setter layer with a clear spec citation (basic URL parser step 3 removes tab-or-newline before any state). WebKit is a prebuilt dependency, so the setter layer is the correct place for the strip. The signature change is safe: the sole caller in JSDOMURL.cpp already holds a String from convert<IDLUSVString>, and setSearch already used const String&. The URLPatternCanonical.cpp setHost hit is on WTF::URL, not URLDecomposition, so it is unaffected.
Other factors
I reviewed this PR twice previously. The first pass flagged that setHost/setHostname shared the bug class — fixed in e463e53 with a 14-row test table and a 1008-cell differential rerun. The second pass flagged one test row's Node-parity claim — resolved in db4f2ef by naming Node 26 in the table comments (the row is both spec-correct and Node 26-correct; only older ada dropped the port). All bot-review threads (comment-cop, coderabbit) are resolved. robobun confirmed the tests fail on the unfixed build and pass with the fix, and that the URL/URLPattern/WHATWG-URL suites pass. The remaining setter divergences against Node listed in the PR description reproduce with the whitespace already removed, so they are correctly tracked separately.
Problem
u = new URL("foo:/a"); u.pathname = "\n/evil.com/y"givesfoo://evil.com/ywithu.host === "evil.com". Node (and the URL Standard) givefoo:/evil.com/ywith an empty host. On special schemes the same leading character doubles the slash:new URL("http://h/").pathname = "\t/x"giveshttp://h//x.u = new URL("http://h/p"); u.host = "\t"(oru.hostname = "\t") giveshttp://p/: the first path segment becomes the host.u.host = "x.com:\t81"drops the port andu.host = "x.com:8\t1"sets port 8; Node sets 81 in both.src/jsc/bindings/URLDecomposition.cppinspect the raw value before WTF reparses it, and only the reparse removes tab, LF and CR.setPathnamehands the value to WTFURL::setPath(vendor/WebKit/Source/WTF/wtf/URL.cpp:840), which decides from the raw value whether to prepend/and whether to insert the/.guard, so"\n/evil.com/y"gets a/prepended and reparses asfoo://evil.com/y.setHostandsetHostnamerun their empty-value no-op check on the raw value (so a whitespace-only value reaches WTF as an empty host andhttp:///preparses withpas the host), andsetHostalso counts the port digits (countASCIIDigits) in the raw value."\n/x"has to mean the same as"/x"and"x.com:\t81"the same as"x.com:81".Fix
setHost, setHostnameandsetPathnameremove tab, LF and CR from the value first (sharedremoveTabAndNewlinehelper) and then run unchanged. They now takeconst String&(assetSearchalready does) soString::removeCharacterscan be used; it returns the same string without allocating when there is nothing to remove. The only caller, theURL.prototypesetters inJSDOMURL.cpp, already holds aString.searchandhashstrip their leading?/#from the raw value by spec and already match Node;username/passwordpercent-encode the value rather than parsing it, so%09is correct there;portalready skips these characters while parsing digits.test.eachtables intest/js/web/url/url.test.ts(pathname: 19 rows, host/hostname: 14 rows; expected values are Node's). 16 pathname rows and 12 host/hostname rows fail on the current release build, all pass with the fix.test/js/web/url/,test/js/web/urlpattern/and the vendoredtest-whatwg-url-*Node tests pass with the fix. Background
URLDecompositionis the WebCore class behindURL.prototype's component getters and setters; each setter copies the WTFURL, edits one component, and stores it back.URL::setPath/setHost/setHostAndPortdo not edit a field. They splice the new component into the URL string and reparse the whole string with the WHATWG parser, which is where tab and newline were being removed./.guard: a URL with a null host whose path starts with an empty segment (e.g.foo:/.//x) is serialized with/.before the path so that//xis not read back as a host.Remaining setter differences against Node that do not involve tab or newline (tracked separately)
Original report (pathname only)
Node vs Bun 1.4.0 on 30 pathname assignments with a tab or newline: Bun differed in 16, all of them a leading tab/LF/CR or a value that strips down to empty. Pre-stripping the value in JS before assigning made Bun match Node in all 30, which is what the fix does natively.
